Our first episode of Season 2: Trials and Tribulations
The topic for this show: It's Time To Stop Calling the Left Hypocrites
EPISODE 000 (with Brett Veinotte & Nathan Fraser)
These eight tips focus primarily on mindset and escaping mental traps, and they're certainly not the final word on how to succeed and stay sane in 2022. Future episodes will continue this theme.

I approached this personal development topic through the lens of fitness because Michael has expressed that the pursuit continues to be a challenge for him. I thought it would be more interesting to discuss a subject where Michael is trying to put the puzzle pieces together, versus one of his areas of expertise (anarchist philosophy, objectivism, North Korea and the New Right).
For me, fitness has proven to be the foundation of a better life, and great teacher for any personal development pursuit. Michael and I are extremely different people, despite coming from similar philosophical backgrounds, but I have identified with him the most when listening to him talk about his fitness, eating and body issues.

They write:
"Hi Brett,
I am an elementary school teacher and a relatively new listener to your show. When the School Walkout happened, I was compelled to write about it. Then, I heard your latest episode with Thad Russell! Many of the thoughts you shared are also echoed in my piece. Perhaps I am preaching to the choir here, but I would like to share my perspective anonymously somehow. .... Thank you for your time and consideration, and for the wonderful forum you've created through School Sucks.
Best,
Concerned Teacher"

Thaddeus Russell returns to examine the bigger picture. We'll discuss the fetish-ization of children by both the left and the right. Other themes include politics as a performance on a stage, dangers of absolutist thinking, Manichaeism (the age-old religious idea of fighting the battle against the darkness on the side of the light, and the comfort and illusion of moral superiority that idea brings), why this phenomenon does NOT require "crisis actors," and the harnessing of teenage angst towards political ends.

I'll talk about that + the use of children as moral shields, the CNN town hall, why people don't actually want to understand this issue, mental health, and the cruelty of providing passionate teenagers with the illusion of knowledge.

-"The Hot Hand" - the zone is more than just luck
-Practice vs. luck: we can transfer slow and careful system two thinking into efficient system one functioning
-System one and the subconscious
-Statistics don't apply to YOU
-The "Academic Fallacy" in the 2008 financial crisis
-Steve: the laws of logic are the laws of existence

My first conversation with You Tube sensation David Brown, better known as boyinaband. I first started to follow his work over a year ago when his video "Don't Stay In School" prompted our friend Derrick J to write a similarly-themed letter to his two younger sisters. We then discussed the letter on the show.
David and I discuss his new video called "You Don't Legally Have To Go To School," our experiences as students, how some of my teaching experience line up with some of themes of his videos, the legality of going to school, Sudbury Schools, and the problem of government schools.

Principle #5: Embrace Your Incompetence
Ego is perhaps the biggest obstacle in the way of learning. People get wrapped up in the appearance of competence or the appearance of knowledge, and they rarely allow themselves to admit being wrong. You might think of ego as a huge methodological error. In reality, failure is your best friend. Failure is immediate feedback that “something is wrong.” And it’s a necessary part of the process for everyone. You literally cannot get from beginner to expert without failing and being wrong.

For the month of February I will be joined by Steve Patterson, a home-educated and self-taught philosopher, to explore five key principles of learning that are translatable to just about any pursuit.
Principle #4: Doubt everybody
Though it sounds rude, I suggest assuming that most people don’t know what they are talking about and do not understand the correct basics. That includes most “experts”, or instructors, in everything from the world of ideas, back to the martial arts, or even basic practical skills.

Principle #3: Mastering the Basics
Essentially related to the principles of technique and efficiency is mastery of the basics – the fundamentals – of any discipline is mastering the discipline. Roger Federer isn’t doing backflips and advanced techniques on the tennis court; he does basic, textbook shots, and they are executed at an extremely high level.

Principle #2: Efficiency
Getting from A to B with the least amount of energy, in the most efficient way. Eliminating all unnecessary steps. This is true both physically and mentally.
-energy conservation
-relaxation
-directness

Principle #1: Technique
The method in which you accomplish what you’re trying to do.
It’s the concrete “how”.
- People have heroes, heroes become superhuman, godly – they look up to but never into people
- high-level performers simply have better technique than their competition. They are closer to “the right way of doing X” than other people.
- Almost everybody does everything incorrectly?
- Practice makes perfect?
- Steve's self-education in economics?
- Credentialing

Covered:
- habits may seem trivial, but the are the most important part of a productivity system
- two approaches to change: slow and steady vs. New Year's resolution
- triggers for activating habits vs. friction against habits
- How do we do it? morning routine, 7 Weeks (Android app), Jake uses Way of Life (iOS)
- no matter what else is going on, do the simple things; even though these seemingly minor habits are the first thing that fall by the wayside when we're really busy
- Jake: "Habits dramatically reduce the amount of willpower and brainpower required to get things done. Once you have implemented a habit and can do it on autopilot, you conserve willpower and brainpower, helping you get more done."
- Willpower is a scarce resource; it degrades decision to decision
- identifying resources beyond willpower
- Jake: "Habits are easiest to adopt when they are simple to understand, when you minimize any friction at the start of the action, when there are clear environmental triggers that tell your unconscious to start the habit, and when you have feedback (rewards) for completion."

Jake Desyllas from The Voluntary Life (http://www.thevoluntarylife.com) joins me to expand upon the two previous shows about goals. In this conversation we explore how to identify visions and purpose in life, and we discuss how goals, projects and even next actions fit into that picture. The concept of "horizons of focus" originally came from David Allen's book Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity. GTD provides a series of tools for getting control over your productive life. And once we have some control, we are able to gain perspective.
