Ember Prototypes
The REAL way to recycle IPA for resin 3D printing
updated
A designer reached out to us to make some custom packaging for a small run of unique action figures that he designed, printed and painted himself ๐
This was the perfect job for our (now donated) Formlabs Form 3L, high temp resin, and our Vaquform DT2. Using a 3D printed mold to make the packaging for a 3D printed action figure is super cool ๐ช
The figurines were printed in resin and hand painted. The molds were resin printed as well, and then vacuum formed on our desktop vacuum former the Vaquform DT2 ๐

Although it's not exactly the same, it's cool that I can now print my own saddle for less than $60 ๐ค
Contrary to what a lot of people thought, the saddle lasted the entire summer and shows no sign of wear or breakage ๐ช
The saddle was printed in white Polymaker HF TPU 95A and black Bambu PAHTCF on the Bambu Lab H2D. It was very easy to assemble and relatively comfortable. But most importantly, it looks rad on my bike ๐ฅ
I have so many more thoughts and ideas after making and riding this. Should I use the Carbon lattice engine? Is there a Formlabs resin I can use instead? What about foaming TPU for true variable density? Pressure mapping? Maybe there will be a part two or three of this ๐ฌ

A local shoe designer needed some prototypes of their shoe outsole done in TPU. Because of the geometry, this part needed supports. Printing these supports in TPU would have been a nightmare to remove...so we tried printing supports in PLA and it worked amazing ๐ช
Hopefully this video can help you get started with TPU + PLA. Having dissimilar support material for TPU really makes life easier and allows you to do some very cool things ๐

Temperatures? Nozzle differences? Profile and speed differences? Literally none of these made any difference, regardless of what people suggested ๐ญ
Then a hero on Reddit suggested it might be something that I hadn't even considered. Because I have an early Kickstarter unit, at some point Bambu Lab changed the cooling fans - and this was actually the culprit ๐คฏ
By simply changing and upgrading the part cooling and auxiliary fan in our Bambulab X1C, we were able to get perfect overhangs just like our P1S for PLA ๐ฅ
So if you experience bad overhangs and cooling on your X1C, you might just to change the fans ๐

We recently had to print a production volume of parts that had several standoffs with small blind holes. Instead of washing them multiple times and blowing them with compressed air, we discovered a really easy way to ensure they always came out clean and wanted to share that trick in this video ๐ช
By simply using a small allen key to push trapped resin out, we were able to ensure clean parts every time out of the IPA wash station. Trapped resin prevents IPA from getting into the hole due to surface tension and viscosity of the resin. By forcing the majority out using a physical tool, it allows the IPA to get into crevices and clean the hole properly ๐ฅ
We used to use a squeeze bottle and compressed air, but the former is messy and the latter can create some ear piercing sounds perfect for damaging your hearing. Since discovering this method, we've never gone back ๐
If you have trouble with trapped resin in small holes that aren't getting cleaned, be sure to give this method a try ๐
