DJTHEDI don't draw. And even 5 years ago, I rarely ever drew, though it was the last time I ever did it. So in total, basically no drawing experience, and most of that experience I do have was back around Middle School and before.
With that being said, ever since I started to get better and better at using Blender for 3D related artwork, I've wanted to actually learn and get comfortable with drawing. Regardless of what artistic medium you're in, knowing how to hand draw is a really, really nice skill to have, and it's something I lack (and still lack even after this tbh).

During most of last year, I had been working with Melbot, and doing the majority of the rigging and animation for main characters in the official MLP G5 Game, "A Maretime Bay Adventure".
I spent most of that time doing a lot of animations for gameplay related stuff (player movement, minigames, and the actual animation behavior systems in Unity, etc. etc. etc.), as well as doing a lot of rigging work alongside that. Then the last couple months of my time there was spent on doing these fully animated cutscene moments you see in this animation reel video. It was an interesting time for me as this was my first real "professional" role as an animator.
Not everything was perfect, whether it be my personal lack of professional experience causing some hurdles to jump through, or just with time being quite limited in general, but I got a lot out of it experience wise. In hindsight, I'm glad I accepted the job and opportunity to do this, since all the experience I had to my name was essentially just recreational animation stuff I've been doing on the side.My MLP Make Your Mark Special - ThoughtsDJTHED2022-06-04 | (Warning, video is incredibly long. Enjoy these 87 minutes of long tangents!)
Well, I originally wanted to finally put together a video about my thoughts on the MLP G5 Movie's visuals and such... But with the recent premier of the G5 Make Your Mark Special... There are things about it I couldn't get off my mind, and I needed to talk about this first.
This video is going to be VERY critical. Not a mindless bashing, just critical. There are a lot of visual quirks with the special that simply do not look correct.
BUT, an important thing I need to emphasize is that a lot of this is symptomatic of a crew that is working on an extremely tight time budget. I know how the internet can be sometimes and how lots of people there can dog-pile onto the "easy" blame target, but I do not in any way think any particular individual, or group of people even, that worked directly on the special within the Atomic Cartoons is to blame for a lot of these visual problems.
So please, I encourage everyone who watches this to, yes, stay critical, but also to not throw random and easy blame on things you may not have a full picture on.

Original DeviantArt Description:
"Finally, I get to show off the wings in motion. The wings as you see them here is the same exact wings as the Version 2 render I published about a week ago.
As you can see, the wings are able to fold unfold without the use of model swaps, and with barely any use of corrective shape keys. On top of that, the wings are very flexible, despite all of the individual feather models being present.
While I did make this animation to show off the wings, I feel like I spent a lot of that time animating the hair manually again. Spent around 2 whole days just dedicated to that part, while the entire animation has been done in about 5 days. Par for the course now, I suppose.
I'm glad that the wings are as good as they are now, and I should be able to move on from this. But of course, if you feel like there's something that could still be better about how the wings look, feel free to let me know. Just keep in mind that the type of wings I'm going for is for the wings to be functional enough to properly fold up, but I'm not necessarily gunning for hyper realistic wings either. I'm still trying to keep the overall shaping and styling of the wings as close to show style as possible while allowing the wings to be functional. Basically, I'm not gunning for hyper-realism. where every piece of wing anatomy being present. Instead, there should be just enough of it to allow the wings to fold and animate properly without model swaps."

Original DeviantArt Description:
"I haven't animated Coloratura in one of these one off animations in a while. I wanted to challenge myself a bit with something I haven't been doing a lot lately, which is walking, with the walk getting interrupted by other actions, and just overall weigh shifting. Making sure the model feels like it has weight is one of the most important things in my opinion to get right at this point. I've usually done a pretty good job at it, but I haven't tried to implement it in an animation with a lot of movement like this one, usually I only hyper focus on stuff like that for more subtle animations. Things I tend to focus on to give the model weight is to imagine where in the body all the weight is being loaded onto. When Coloratura starts putting a lot of weight into one place, especially when she's pushing herself forward as she's wandering around this hallway, he hooves will buckle a bit more and her shoulders and/or hips will raise more, for example. If there's barely any weight being put on one side of the body, for example when a hoof is raised, that side of the body would sink a bit as the weight of the limb weighs that side of the body down combine with the other side of the body getting the weight load. That's usually what goes through my mind as I work on something like this in a nutshell.
I also wanted to mix things up with backgrounds again. I want to find better more interesting ways to present my models that's not just in plain and easy studio lighting conditions. This hallway she's in was modeled and detailed by me, but is heavily based on the interior of Applejack's home, specifically one of the hallways. And considering Coloratura's friendship with Applejack, this seemed fitting! Pretty satisfied with the result, with lighting I haven't applied to my models before, with just a couple warm ceiling point lights to light the scene."

This is the little side project I've been working on the past couple weeks. Doesn't mean I'm done working on my other projects I've been highly focused on the last few months, but this was a nice break to try to improve my skill in Unity. So, don't panic if you thought I'm moving on for good or something, I'm not.
TF2 is my favorite game of all time, and in this video I explain why I decided to try out a project like this. Keep in mind that all Unity footage of the game in action is of course a very early prototype, of which has only about two weeks worth of development time from someone who doesn't even consider themselves much of a programmer.
If you still have questions even after you watch the video, feel free to ask. And of course if you happen to have any information of advice regarding some things I mentioned in this video (and the devlog), please do let me know, too!
If you are interested in actually directly helping and contributing to this project, please let me know on Twitter, since that's the best place to contact me reliably where I am very likely to see it compared to a YouTube comment (http://www.twitter.com/_DJTHED). Just be aware that you should show things you've done in the past that shows that you'd be able to help the way you might claim. Otherwise I may not respond to you.

But theres a problem.DJTHED2020-12-27 | Not a hardware specific related problem, just firmware related, which is going to delay this upgraded build from being finished for a few weeks at most, hopefully. Dang.(2020) Twilight gets SpookedDJTHED2020-11-07 | She also walks a bit I think, so that's kinda neat.
...
Anyway, this was a test animation I wanted to do after finishing up Twilight's model (mainly the hair for the mane and tail for her). I first had to make a walk cycle animation (I believe the technical term here is a prance), and then work that into implementing that walk cycle into the scene itself and smoothly transition out of it.
I then wanted to show off Twilight's mane. Twilight's mane shifts shape based on its rotation relative to the active camera. And having her head turn a couple times was to test that out. Twilight's mane in the actual show is really hard to make any real sense of in 3D space, it cheats perspective a lot, despite how simple it might look. You may know how other 3D Twilights look, such as the SFM model and a few others, struggle to replicate its show-style look a lot more than other manes. To get around this problem for my model, I opted to have the shape, or the silhouette, adapt depending on how the mane is rotated relative to the camera to help keep its shape relatively close to how it should be, while also not being so jarring with it that it just becomes obvious and distracting whenever it does change. I think I have a fairly neat middle ground for that.
As for the rest of the animation, a lot of it is sort of standard stuff I normally do for making ponies act, so not much more for me to add there. Always like to focus on continuous motion for the main body to make sure the body feels more real combined with weight shifting, and also make sure to nail the micro-expressions for the face during acting. Kind of curious how people will interpret the acting, actually. What's the scene's context that fills your mind when you watch this animation? What is Twilight reacting to? What is she doing after her main reaction? I have my own reasons, but I am curious what some of you think.
One negative thing I noticed is probably the ears. Subsurface Scattering is probably tuned a bit too high, so too much light is passing through the thin parts of them. And it looks a bit strange with the new shader configuration I added recently that essentially blocks off some of that light to imitate hairs that block it. I think in general the effect is good, just overtuned. I will make adjustments to that now that I see its issues in motion with this test render.
Now with this test animation out of the way, I plan to get back to work on The Magic Inside 3D. I really wanted to make sure Twilight's mane was going to work in a final setting before I started using Twilight for the introduction of Coloratura's speech before her song.

It's honestly pretty neat, and it really helps put things into perspective, especially regarding scale, when viewing your 3D Models or 3D Scenes in VR.(2020) Whats Hello Pinkie Pie?DJTHED2020-03-18 | My first animation that actually brought in a VA from the fandom! You might notice that the VA is credited as Anonymous for the time being, and that's mainly due to a situation they were recently in and insisted that I leave them credited as Anonymous, at least for now. I do hope they change their mind later, but I understand their situation. But we are still in good terms, like mentioned in the actual credits. I do intend to use this VA again.
Now, when it comes to my part of directing the VA, I'm still fairly new at that. When asking for auditions, I didn't foresee how different the Pinkie Pie voice acting would have to be to what Pinkie normally sounds like. This animation is more of a confused and somewhat stunned take on Pinkie, where she doesn't understand what she's looking at, even though she's technically looking at herself. I probably still have quite a bit to learn in this department.
For the animation itself, it perhaps didn't take TOO long. Though there are some head tilt movements I'm not sure I got right. But other than that... Not sure what else to say other than most of the secondary motion, like the mane, was done through "Wiggle Physics", which is an add-on being developed in Blender, and it's still pretty rough. It essentially applies physics to armature bones, sort of like what "Jiggle Physics" do in games. It's something I started using a while back to reduce animation workload on myself, as that was a huge drain.
The background is fairly interesting. I modeled it entirely myself. It's based off of Pinkie's room in Sugarcube Corner. I modeled this all while I was still waiting on VAs to send in their auditions, as I had not much else to do but work on a better background. I never liked having simple backgrounds, and creating good backgrounds from scratch take so much time. But I had an opportunity to work on a decent background, so here it is!
And finally, the rendering process was done through Sheep-It! I've used this service plenty of times before, and it especially helped in this scene where I had a complex INTERIOR background to render for each frame, as well as 500+ 1080p frames to render. It ended up being 80 cumulative days to render, which in real time took only about 24 hours. If I were to render this on my own hardware (One GTX 1070, and one RTX 2070), it probably would've been around a 40 day render. Sheep-It, for those who don't know, is a volunteer based Render Farm service for Blender where people can volunteer their machines to render projects that people submit there. Everything about it is free. I'm not sponsored by them or anything, but the service really deserves a shoutout by making rendering mostly a non-issue in terms of the time sink required to make it happen. You can find that site here: sheepit-renderfarm.com
The main thing that actually costs render time is my Pony model. The mane specifically, actually. The mane is just a bunch of layered meshes with alpha transparency. and having a bunch of meshes with alpha stacked close to each other can really have a major impact on render times. There's not much I can do about it, as I don't intend to change my methodology on modeling the hair for Ponies, because it just works way too well, despite the render time drawbacks.
For the first time for one of my animations, I'm going to need a VA to volunteer their voice to get one of my animations to work. I have the entirety of the Idle animation process recorded, but due to technical issues, I only managed to record around half of my process on working on the walk. The entire session was about 5 hours, just to put into perspective how much was lost.
Regardless of that, I hope you find this session educational. I discovered its armature was too simplified, even though its model was heavily based off of the very commonly seen models from X/Y, OR/AS, Su/Mo, and Sw/Sh. It was impossible to really do any meaningful animation with it. I originally gave up doing an animation because of that, but I still had a hidden motivation to redo the animation somehow. So I just used the 3DS's X/Y model.

But I wanted to make an exception this time, as this is way less of a let's play than it is a critique of the game as I play through it.
I am going to be very critical, and I am going to be blunt. I love Pokemon Mystery Dungeon to death, but with great love also means I want the absolute best to come from this series. I do look forward to this game and I plan on getting it, but there are a lot of issues I have with it as well that can potentially still make the original Nintendo DS Blue Rescue Team game the definitive version.Rendering in the Pokemon 3DS Shading Style in BlenderDJTHED2019-11-22 | This is sort of a side thing I've been doing for the past couple of days, basically revamping how I've been doing 3DS style shading (something I've done quite a few years ago, and I'm only now kind of getting back into it). After doing some experimentation with better knowledge and being more comfortable in Blender in general, I thought I'd share what I discovered regarding mimicking this kind of shading technique.

The original was done with 3 point lighting, and it probably wasn't set up amazingly well, on top of other problems I appeared to be having with materials for the body itself. In this 360 degree turn around render, I wanted to remove those factors. I tweaked the overall roughness of the coat, and I turned the scene into a 100% naturally lit scene purely by a sun and some sky light.
There were some critiques about the original render, but it was hard to isolate the issue if it was due to silhouette issues, material issues, lighting issues, or what have you. So I got rid of some of the other factors, and then made a render that rotates around the whole model to get a view from all angles, which could help find issues with the silhouette at certain angles. If you happen to notice anything, or have any feedback of any kind to provide, please let me know!
Most of the time I'm relying on just my own feedback for my own stuff, which can be difficult as I've stared at these models for 3 years straight. You tend to get used to your own wrong-doings over time without outside feedback.(2019) Unicorn Magic Animation Render TestDJTHED2019-10-02 | If you wish to support me, here's my Patreon link: patreon.com/djthed
So the time has finally come. A few months ago I made a lot of progress with Pegasus wing models and rigs, and while they still do have some improvements that can be made at some point, I do have some progress to show off for another race of ponies, being the Unicorns and their magic aura and glow that emit from their horns.
Believe it or not, but I only just started working on this magic effect and horns just at the start of yesterday. I've been thinking about how to do this effect for a couple months now, but I had an idea very recently, and decided to sit down and work on it all day yesterday. It was essentially a 14 hour work day for me just working on the magic aura, particles, and the horn model itself.
There are a few elements to this I would like to describe on how they work. The first major part I worked on first was the aura itself, which is the big blob of magic that has a glowing outline surrounding the horn. That is actually just a mesh object that is animated in a pretty fancy way, and also has a pretty fancy material setup that allows it to glow only from the outline using fresnel, and has an emissive volumetric shader alongside the main outline glow material. This mesh object, which is fundamentally shaped like a screw, rotates on a single axis to make it appear the magic waves are moving upwards towards the tip, as it does canonically. Then there are a couple lattices and wave modifiers to distort the mesh quite heavily to make it not look solid and makes it look very unstable and wobbly. I lastly rigged this mesh and give it some wiggle bones, which basically gives it automated follow through animation when the aura moves around.
The magic dust is fairly simple. It's a particle system, and there's not much deviation from how it's set up by default. It emits from the glow mesh, and each particle has an average lifetime of 36 frames (which effects how long the dust lingers around, which is especially visible when the aura moves). Each particle is two tris, and has a material applied that gives each particle slight color variation from the base color that's used for the aura itself. The material also is set up so that the glow that the magic dust emits gets weaker and less bright the closer each particle reaches the end of their lifespan, which helps make it not look jarring when the particles reach their end and vanish instantaneously. The particle system itself also gives slight variations to each particles lifespan, size, velocity, etc. Variation is key here, even if it's subtle. It really, really helps make it feel more real.
Lastly, the horn itself. The horn's model is simple. It's modeled like a screw fundamentally, like the aura. I literally use something called a "screw modifier" to make the base model which I then further build off of to shape it like how it is from the MLP show and movie. The horn is attached to the forehead, and not much else. The mesh is done. But the horn also glows along the creases, which helps convey that the magic aura is coming from the horn itself.
That's basically it for all of the stuff within the 3D space, but there is also the compositing phase, which is probably at its most important when pulling off this effect. I'm using post processing to give both a bloom effect, which helps make the glow outline especially look more convincing, and also a glare streak effect that really helps the magic dust feel more sparkly and magical.
And yes, like I said I did all of this horn and magic stuff in a 14 hour work day. The animation you see here was actually done mostly today, the day I'm posting this. The base model is plain and has no mane or tail, but as you can probably assume from the colors, it will soon become Rarity. But it's still in the early stages. No special eyelashes yet, no Cutie Mark. I have made some adjustments to the eye shape for Rarity, but that's about it, and that's still incomplete too. The animation was done in a day, so it's also a bit rough around the edges. The eyelashes especially have some clipping issues, but as it was not my priority at the moment, and this is essentially just a test animation and is not meant to be treated as a final product, I didn't fix them. The animation is meant to show off the visual effects work I did yesterday, and I would love to hear feedback about this.

So yeah, I decided to animate that Pinkie smile render I did a few days back. It's been a while, so why not? I wanted to test out the revised body rigging anyway, and it seems to work nicely for me. This is also my first actual animation that includes "jiggle physics" automated hair animation. I use it for the mane exclusively. I still animate the tail manually, as the script I'm using for the physics isn't well equipped to handle collisions, which it would obviously need to do with the floor. But other than a few clean ups I've made to a few frames, the mane is pretty much completely automated animation with armature based physics.

It's an interesting first try, but there are some pretty glaring issues that appears everywhere in this short.
It wouldn't surprise me if this short was on a tight time and money budget, so even if the team behind this short were capable of fixing all of these nitpicks I've gone over in this video, they likely just couldn't due to those constraints. Kind of sad, but that's how the world works. This of course does not make this short immune to critique... and there is a LOT to critique.
Also, this critique video is the first time I've started to use my Leafeon model during my commentary as an avatar/persona. It's something I wanted to try for a while. How does it look?
Paypal Alternative: goo.gl/YTgduc(2019) Leafeon Lip-Sync 3D Animation TestDJTHED2019-06-05 | This is using my recently made Leafeon model and rig. And, while I didn't originally create this model for the purpose of it being used as sort of a persona, it's starting to turn into that. This animation test was made to test out how the lip-syncing looks with the current rig setup, and to see how good the model looks in motion (as well as the how good the glasses look in motion).
Don't forget that I'm still by definition an amateur animator. I would be more than happy to read feedback on how I've done on this animation, and what can be improved. Lip-syncing isn't something I've done a whole lot recently, so that's something I expect I can improve on the most.

I have been meaning to make a new Leafeon model for a while now. The old one I've used for about 3-4 years was made back when I was still learning a lot of the basics, and as a result, the old version used a lot of methods and techniques that I'd never use today. Knowing what I know today while also having that old version still being used as my profile picture didn't feel very great to me. So it was time for me to make a new model, and this timelapse has you covered on how I went about it all the way through.

So yeah, after quite a handful of months, I finally figured out pegasus wings. So I can finally feel satisfied and move on. After I finished the wings, I decided to record all of my following sessions on the Rainbow Dash model conversion. In this case, it's mostly making a new mane and tail from scratch, and making a few adjustments to the eyes, as this was Applejack's model before the conversion.

Had to take a bit of a brain break from the work I've been trying to do with pegasi wings and all that. I honestly don't know how I'm going to actually rig them to be fully flexible the way I need them to. So for now, I think I'm going to move on and come back to them later instead of just getting stuck on them. Before I get back into doing other things with my pony models, I wanted to do some animation stuff with my Pichu model. Been playing lots of Smash Ultimate, and a proud Pichu main. I absolutely love Pichu, and as someone who plays Smash competitively on top of the 3D stuff I do, I'm also really happy to see that Pichu is actually looking like a really good character in Ultimate.
So yeah, this model is the one I used in my first Pichu render, not the one that used realistic hair shaders and such. That one isn't rigged sufficiently enough to be used for animation anyway, and I didn't want to spend too much time on this as I actually want to get back into the swing of things. But it was fun doing this. I haven't animated anything bipedal in ages, so it was a nice refresher.
After this I'll go back to the pony models, just not going to worry about wings for now until I understand wing anatomy a bit more somehow, and learning better rigging techniques for wing feathers. I don't know enough of either right now, which is why I've been stuck on it for longer than I really would've liked.

I've never really done much of anything with wings before. I've animated with wings once before, and only once, but I never rigged or studied wing anatomy too much. I've been kind of dreading the day I'd have to rig wings for pegasi just due to the complications and challenges that's definitely going to come from that. But considering my lack of experience, it seems to be going off on a decent start. I want the wings to be flexible. I want them to fold and unfold seamlessly without model swapping or excessive shape keys/blend shapes. And I don't want posing for wings to be a pain in the ass, I want it all to just work in the end. Spreading the wings should mostly be automatic, and not having to worry about manually posing each feather (ESPECIALLY IN ANIMATION).
deviantart.com/therealdjthed patreon.com/djthed twitter.com/_DJTHED(2018) Coloratura Performance Intro WIP 3D AnimationDJTHED2018-10-05 | It's sure been a long while since I've done any animations with lip syncing. And this is the first time I'm doing any kind of lip syncing with the new overhauled rig!
So, yeah. Just to show some of the hidden benefits of the new reworked rig that you guys will likely never notice, because it's all behind the scenes, I started working on this animation only 4 days ago as of uploading this animation. In contrast, the last time I did an animation like this was with Coloratura again in this video: youtube.com/watch?v=hk6-yRIOUNU This old one took like a whole month to make. The benefits of the new rig when it comes to animation is the automation of a lot of things that used to have to be manually posed, mostly with facial animation. Right now, there are 95 total shape keys/blend shapes contributing to the facial rigging with unique drivers for each. 60 of which are for the eyebrows, 30 for each brow. Before, there was exactly 0 shape keys for the eyebrows, and a few for the mouth and other parts of the face like the eyelids. That was it. As a result, it took way longer to make poses for any facial expression due to all the manual work that I now don't have to worry about!
Anywho, this animation was made to now resume production of the ultimate goal of this project, and that's to recreate the Magic Inside scene from The Mane Attraction S5E24 from MLP:FiM. I still expect to make some changes to the rig as I work on this, but there aren't any more drastic changes that I can foresee that will interrupt the production of this main project. The first part is actually going to be the easy part, and that's animating Coloratura's main performance. The real challenge of the project is literally everything else. The set, background characters and animation, creating new pony bases for 2 large and average size male types, creating pegasi and alicorn wings (for Twi), and filly base models.
So yeah, expect progress on those soon as well, most of which you can see the progress of on my DeviantArt below, as well as Twitter (just now started to use it, so hopefully I can stick to that):
Oh, and Patreon too!: patreon.com/djthedPC Upgrades and Future Hardware Plans.DJTHED2017-12-23 | I'm floored by how quickly I was able to get upgraded hardware for my main PC. I predicted that it would've been many, many months from now a month ago. But I've been getting so much support lately on Patreon and Paypal for the animations I create on my Deviantart, and as typical as it is for me to say this, I can't think you guys enough.
The next step is for me to save up for more PC hardware to build separate computers dedicated to just rendering. I have spare hardware from previous builds that I can use. I have a couple AM3 motherboards and a decent amount of RAM (will need a bit more DDR3 but not too much), and each motherboard still has their AMD FX CPU in them. The important things I need are cases that make good use of space and has good airflow, which is needed since I'm putting these in a garage, and it's going to get hot in there in summer. And the real meat of the investment is going to come in the form in buy TWO Nvidia GTX 1070s for each new system I put together. Other misc. things will be needed, such as networking hardware to keep the systems connected and all that, but that's the gist of my plan. The GPUs are what will be handling the rendering, and it's why I don't really care too much about what CPU they carry since the load is mostly on the GPU for this kind of workload.

Ah well.(2017) I AM NOT RARA - Pony Test AnimationDJTHED2017-03-24 | I've made tons of changes to this model since I posted my first test animation with this model:
-The face's mesh was completely overhauled. So no more weird deformations around the mouth area when talking like last time.
-The mouth itself is bigger this time too, and the snout shape has been adjusted.
-I've also added a subtle eyeshadow that's present in the 2D animation.
-The materials have been changed significantly, and the coat has more texture detail.
-I've implemented the "Filmic Blender" color management mod into Blender so that the image has a far better dynamic range and color accuracy than what Blender comes with by default.
-The front and back hooves rigging has been overhauled to look better and be more show accurate, as well as to be more animator friendly.
-I've change my approach when it comes to animating this model. I've decided to not be completely reliant on using the original 2D animation as a reference, and just going with what I feel would be good in a 3D setting, while only using the 2D animation to get the key poses for the most part.
-The hair is still a bitch to manually animate god dammit.
-Isn't the thumbnail gorgeous?
-Many other minor changes that makes the model look that much nicer.

This animation is just a test animation. I never really started this animation with the intent on fully completing it with backgrounds and good lighting. I mostly just made it to make sure my rig was working as intended and fixed things that didn't work as I went.
So yeah, the animation, the model, rigging, and even the texture painting was created by me using Blender. This was rendered in Blender Cycles. Of course the animation and the look is intended to mimic the style of the show. That was my intent and I hope to improve it even further.
