Lasse Lammert
LSD Studio Diary: Syndemic Drum Recordings
updated
I've always loved the sound of the old Marshall JCM2000 DSL 100.
Awesome Marshall tone, tons of gain, just fucking fantastic.
BUT...
... this deep switch was absolutely useless, with it in the OUT position, the sound is paper thin and with it IN it's really boomy and unusable for fast thrashy mutes.
the Legendary Tones Mr.Scary mod fixed all that in the most pleasing way.
so I just reduced the gain on the amp (lead1 instead of lead 2), and made up for the loss of distortion and saturation with the Mr.Scary a bit later in the chain.
this plug'n'play mod also has a low switch, which I had disengaged here (and the deep switch on the amp IN).
what I got was all the sound and tone I love from this amp, but it cleared up the low end significantly without making it sound thin.
Now it does fast thrash palm mutes like a champ (this is straight in, no boost).
please excuse the horrible playing, this is quite literally the first time in 3 years that I touched a guitar, but I just wanted to show you why I'm so stoked on this.
This isn't a proper recording of course, it's just my iPhone sitting on the table resting against a big af swimbait, exactly like the studio pros are doing it...🙄
but either way, ignore the playing and iPhone mic quality, you'll still hear how fucking tight this awesome underrated amp has become.
This is their take on that EVH preamp, I'm running it through the Radar IR Loader, so what you're hearing is that direct recording, no external boost, amp or cab etc...
pretty neat little fly rig, innit?
...this ended up being 45 minutes of nerd talk, so I definitely don't expect you to watch it and stay awake ;)
Kudos if you do, haha

this is my stock 1975 Marshall Super Lead MKII (well, stock except for the filter caps, some pots, jacks and head shell, which had to be replaced due to age).
Bossted with the Boss SD-1W set to "stock" mode, so no extra gain or anything over the regular old sd-1.
sm57 and a bit of r121 on a Mesa cab, no post processing.
Shows that with a tiny bit of boost you can get those old amps into high gain territory without a problem. The character of the sound is still old school Marshall, but isnt it great to have all those flavours of distortion in modern high gain music as well?
So I was really stoked when I found out about the Legendary Tones HotMod V2, which takes the same principal but used readily available 12ax7 instead...Took me about 2 minutes to buy one of them and about 2 weeks for it to arrive.
And flip me, is that thing sick!
Anyway, here's a direct comparison between the two.
No post processing on the guitars, cab was a Mesa Recto 4x12, miked with an sm57 and an R121.
I couldn't help but randomly throw an sm57 in front of the speaker...
Literally just used whatever settings the amp was on and the position I happened to put the 57 in, just eyeballing it..zero post processing whatsoever, but I think it's still quite obvious what the combination Brian-Siggi-Puretone is capable of.
this was recorded without a boost or amp, just straight into the Nemesis, recorded through the Mooer Radar IR loader.
No tubes were harmed during the making of this clip!
but honestly, if you're looking for a sick travel rig and don't need to cover a plethora of musical styles and switching, the Nemesis might be for you!
Here I just used an IR inside the Mooer Radar, but you could as well just put the output of the Nemesis into the FX return of whatever amp you have on stage (or in your rehearsal room or studio), and use that amp's power amp.
The Nemesis is a sick standalone high gain guitar preamp.
The tone/EQ knobs actually deserve that name and offer a wide range of very useful distortion sounds.
well, here's a quick walkthrough video of how I am doing it.
I'm sure it's not the only way and I'm sure people will correct me on things, but this is how it works for me ;)
sorry for the slightly awkward video, but it was a bit difficult to keep the fader in the shot while still making sure the phone I'm recording with doesn't fall over :P.
so yeah, this took a bit longer and looks a bit more awkward than it should have, but I hope it's helping anyway.
DISCLAIMER: use this at your own risk, don't blame me if you screw up your faders
The Kuro P.h.A. is a sick pedal to shape the tone slightly, get it a bit more or less tight, boost some mids, cut some lows or highs, add some "push" etc, all without changing the original tone of the amp (unless desired).
Here I just used it to slightly tighten up the low end on fast mutes by boosting the mids slightly, which resulted in the same great Soldano sound but with slightly faster tracking low end...loving this combination
don't let the small footprint confuse you, it's a full blown head tone- and volume wise.
This is not a modelling amp, but a real analog tube amp with Nanotube technology.
Here's a quick metal clip using the modern high gain channel.
Cab: Engl Pro 2xsm57
Drums: Mike Heller
I usually am not using distortion pedals but I love mid boosts, overdrives etc...this thing seems to be really versatile and can be set to be an awesome boost for an already overdriven amp...you can tighten up the lows for fast playing or make them explode for doom stuff...all that without altering the basic tone of the amp...
loving it.
Here I'm gonna guide you through the process step by step and then we're gonna compare the miked tracks to the tracks that were reamped through the IR we captured....
sounds fun?
there's also a possible goodie somewhere towards the end of the video, so keep watching ;)

In order to do that I needed several amps to switch between, so I figured it'd be a good situation to switch back and forth between my 3 Diezel heads.
All heads go into the same cab and have the EQ knobs set to approximately noon with just small adjustments (dipping the mids on the vh4 and Einstein slightly to make them more comparable to the Herbert with the mid cut engaged (set to 9:00 o'clock).
Usually I'd use a boost for this type of riffing, in this case there's no boost though, just the guita (DI) straight into the amps.
Edit: the "cab" I ended up using for this test was actually not a real cab at all but one of my Mesa Its loaded into the St.Rock react:IR

Thanks
Mike's an amazing player, fast but interesting and very dynamic, I really wanted to keep his tone and vibe, so it was important for me to keep the drums real and organic...
yet I wanted them to still sound modern and punchy and have every little detail and fiddly bit audible even in a dense metal context with thick walls of guitars...
So I automated pretty much every individual element of the kit in an attempt to get "modern" punch and clarity without having to trigger and sample replace everything....
Here's what the volume automation for the drum channels looks like on the board.
I hope you like it
So here's V2.0 of my amp test clip with new drums provided by Mike...
The Uberschall was the most popular video from the previous series, so I thought it's be fitting to start with the Bogner on this one...
Enjoy ;)
I tweaked the settings on the plugin to get as close as possible to the amp's sound, and I gotta say I'm impressed with how similar I got it.
the top track (blue) is the amp and the bottom track (green) the plugin version of it.
sorry for the boring playing ;)
no post processing other than a touch of reverb
yeah, I get it and you're right!
I still wanted to find out if this amazing instrument can do it, please let a man have some fun!! :P
I'd still love to know what you think, please tell me in the comments
so a lot of boring talky shite from some boring German guy....
I decided to not use external/my IRs, since those might not be available to everyone, instead I used the IRs/Cabs the plugins come with and just picked my favourite one out of those, then tweaked the amps to my liking.
This is by no means a scientific test, it's just a quick comparison of those two ampsims set up how I liked the sound.
First half is without any boost, second half is the amp boosted.
I used the internal "hex drive" overdrive with the NTS and since the UAD Herbert doesn't come with an overdrive, I used the TS808 from the Audified Multidrive PedalPro to boost the UAD.

but damn, I'm loving it!
I literally dialed this in within 3 minutes after first switching the pedal on....and the options are nearly limitless, but this is a quick and easy way to get a variety of different boost tones from vintage to modern

And it was about darn time someone created a software version of it!
Here’s Audified’s take on this classic distortion pedal (yes, it’s a classic, deal with it), I’m comparing it to its hardware version and am talking about how I’m using it as a boost…
turns out I dig the software version as well ;)

Briefly talking about the differences between the World Tour Edition and Studio Legends Edition and when to use which.
So I quickly created 2 presets and reamped something for you.
here's what it sounds like with no post processing.
Guitars:
PRS McCarty with Fishman Fluence KSE
Gibson Les Paul with Kloppmann HB59
Two Notes Torpedo Live with Mesa Recto 4x12 IR (sm57)
Let's find out!
but are those heads REALLY as different as the forum hype wants you to believe?
Here's a back to back comparison of my RevF 2 channel and my 3 channel heads (pre Multi-Watt).
These do not have the same tubes in them (same type, different brands), so bear in mind that some of the (IMO already minor) differences come from the different tubes.
no post processing
first: crunch channel of the SLO, no boost
second: crunch channel plus Klon KTR
last: overdrive channel plus KTR
what do you think?
This is the guitar straight into the amp
- Marshall 1960V
- single sm57.
I didn't try to match the original tone 100%, cause then I would have chosen T-75 speakers instead, but I kinda wanted to have a similar vibe with my own touch....
either way...this amp is an absolute BEAST, especially for thrash tones...
This is with the preamp gain set to 5.
who wants to see the Neural DSP Nameless Suite to do something similar?

obviously not a very fair (or even useful) comparison since the pickups are gear towards different sounds, one has quite a bit more output than the other and a slightly more modern voicing, the other has more of a vintage output...the duncan Antiquity PAF would have made more sense than the JB, but whatever...still, I really wanted to know how these stack up against each other, so I made this video anyways ;)
Here's a link to the video of the Duncan JB with the same amp settings:

I have recently had the chance to work on the latest, and unfortunately also the final album of one of my metal heroes. All of Warrel’s previous releases were soaked in some of the best guitar tones I had heard, so I set out to create a tone that’s worthy of his legacy. This tone is creamy and smooth, but at the same time extremely tight to work with fast, low palm muted playing, as well as with melodic single note lines. It is big, bold, and heavy, but at the same time work’s really well in a mix, check it out if you don’t believe me!
Here’s some footage my half drunk little monkey self took at summer breeze open air.
Alestorm performing “hangover”
Just got this Bias Head from Positive Grid and just went ahead and just for fun matched my Blueface VH4.
I have yet to play around with it for a bit longer, match more chains, learn the software etc, but I thought I'd just share this first result with you real quick.
Sorry, the next posts will be about amps and tones and production etc again :)

Same settings on amp and pedal, just chaning the pickups and volume/tone settings on the guitar.
sorry for the shitty playing, but I really just wanted to show the tones ;)
The pickups are the Seymour Duncan Antiquity JB/Jazz set, which I definitely prefer to the regular set.
The JB has loads more low end below 200Hz and the Hetfield has a ton more high end above 3kHz. They actually sound quite different and it really comes down to personal taste.
I like how fast tracking and tight the low end is on the EMG, but the JB definitely has a growl that I like.
Amp was an EVH 5150III without no boost and no post processing.
btw, I gotta say I definitely prefer the antiquity to the regular JB by far.
Hallelujah!!
Here's a wee comparison I did between the hardware and the plug in
I didn't match the settings 100%, but I think it's close enough to show you how awesome that plug in is.
All three pickups are in the same guitar, same strings, same distance to the strings, same riffs, same amp and settings etc.
The only variable is the pickup (and the playing obviously, but I tried to keep that consistent).
The pickups are:
498T
500T
Dirty Fingers (original from 1980)
Guitar: 2013 Gibson Les Paul Traditional
Amp: EVH 5150 III
Cab: Engl Pro with a single sm57 (my IR in 2n Torpedo Live)
1 track on each side, zero post processing
and I have refused to do so for 7 effin years...
well...now I'm not only releasing a new pack for the Kemper, but the tones are also available for your axe fx and AX8 etc...
The original pack had 15 profiles, this has 85 profiles for every possible application in it, all the amps, all the cabs, all the mics.
so yeah, head over to http://www.STLtones.com and grab it!

I was challenged to compare a Strat with a Les Paul, both with EMGs because people claim that they would still sound the same (again, bollocks)...but I'd even go a step further than that...I took ALL the construction elements like bridge, neck construction, type of wood, scale length (that one's a biggie) out of the equation and am now comparing to extremely similar guitars..both are constructed in exactly the same way, same types of wood for every part of the guitar, same hardware, down to the same type of laquer.
the only difference is that one guitar has a slightly thinner body and is a bit lighter in weight...that's it.
acoustically the latter one has a bit less round bottom end but a bit more "snap" and output.
And although the body has the smallest influence on the overall sound (compared to scale length, pickup position, neck etc) it's still a difference that translates even through a high gain amp...
granted, the difference in this comparison is subtle (you might have to jump back and forth to the same sections in the riff to really hear it), but it's as subtle or big as it would be with any two guitars with the same type of pickup (passive or active)...
so do active pickups make every guitar sound the same regardless of quality and type of wood? DEFINITELY NOT, so please stop regurgitating those BS statements all over the web.
educate yourself!
Thanks for watching
(maybe I'll still do that Strat vs LP video at some later point)
it's kinda exhausting to keep hearing the same stupid old regurgitated misinformed statements...especially when they're so f*ck#ng easy to prove wrong...
educate yourselves, for god's sake, just pick up a guitar and try it yourself before you start repeating the same stupid old forum idiocies with conviction and look like a fool.
Sorry for the profanity ;)
Not.
Thanks for watching ;)
No external boost, but I did use that Beast/Assault mode.
