In an era where Mixed Reality/Spatial Computing devices are reaching maturity, design fiction emerges as an indispensable tool. This approach extends beyond the creation of speculative XR applications - it establishes a shared language that promotes understanding on both experiential and practical levels. While many discuss the potential of MR apps, design fiction enables us to take action, pioneering tech innovations and envisioning how we will integrate this technology into our daily lives, even in the most mundane ways.
Crafted from a PVC tube and a Beat Saber Oculus Quest Pro Controller Grip, this staff is more than just a prop. It represents my obsessions into making digital illusions feel real in a passthrough video environment. By channeling the controller's vibrations through the tube, I create a subtle yet tangible sensation that mimics the act of casting spells [*] , enhancing the immersive experience.
[*Yes... I know what it feels ; ]

We need to think “Object centric”. Although there are multiple ways of imagining MR, we should focus primarily on the awakening of matter, meaning that objects in our surroundings augment themselves to communicate with us.
We are not Tom Cruise! Staying upright and making big gestures is the opposite of our everyday interaction habits. The mouse-keyboard combo has yet to be replaced because it is the most efficient way to execute a maximum number of actions with minimum movement in a seated position. The question becomes how do we interact with digital matter if input devices such as keyboard, mouse, and gamepad disappear? The “World as a device” approach not only creates an entry point to contextual services, but also transforms each object into an interactive controller. Physical objects will inherit the attributes, interactions and behaviors of a virtual replica, a 3D asset that I call a smart object.
For example, a simple business card could give both direct access to an application like LinkedIn and be a user interface that avoids the user having to take out their smartphone or use a computer.

For this project we integrated a procedural 3D modeling technology called Sceelix. Sceelix already had a Unity plugin for retrieving models from the Sceelix server at runtime. We invited them to Hackweek and work together for adding run time 2-way communication between Sceelix and Unity.
VR input and object manipulation was designed for the Oculus Touch controllers specifically. For example we used the capacitive touch sensors to grab pieces without actually having to press buttons.
By communicating with Sceelix we are able to smartly manipulate pieces. For example, stretching is not just scaling the object but adapting it to a new space through patterns. Each piece has an underliying graph representation in Sceelix that tells how it is made and how it should grow. Interactions with objects in Unity are turned into parameters and sent through sockets to Sceelix, which in turns generates and sends back meshes with colliders.

In this demo, we share our findings in building real-time 3D experiences with consumer headsets so as to go beyond the first person shooter gaming usage for which they are designed. We address the key problems of such user experiences which are to isolate the user from his own body, have him lose contact with other people in the room and with the real world. To solve those issues we use an off-the-shelf Kinect for Windows v2 to inject some reality in the virtuality.

The Pandora's Box works with cleverly hidden video projectors for the video mapping, the Kinects to calibrate the projections as well as to trigger the users' scenarios, NFC to make inert objects communicate with various devices, and so on.
This P.O.C. in the shape of a simple paper cube, demonstrates that we could use basic shapes as notifications vectors (email, weatherforecast) and as interaction device.Augmented Reality is not a magic solution that should replace our powerful computers specialized for work. It can also be used to improve the existing devices, by discharging them of the secondary tasks so that they can remain focus on their workflow.
For the user it is almost transparent, he could almost have the feeling that he has super powers. But tomorrow, when everything is in place, by synchronizing all visible and invisible sensors, everyone will be able to benefit from these augmented capacities, as if they were innate abilities and I call this ecosystem:The Egosystem.

http://www.gregmadison.co
In 2009, I presented my project “The 7th Sense” in the Human Machine Design category at the Microsoft Imagine Cup.
This device offered the possibility of visualizing and interacting with alternative realities among others. In other words, with today’s technology, the Google glasses crossed with the Kinect.
I was a finalist with this concept to the world finals.
How to keep our acquired numerical skills, while drastically reducing our consumption of raw materials, energy and fossil resources?
By creating a single device that will replace all of them, which could not become obsolete, and whose only functionality’s limit would be the imagination of the developers .
The 7th Sense device enables to superimpose the digital world on the real environment. Everything around us turns into a Microsoft Surface and offers intuitive interaction and much more, since, this is the first device to enable the viewing of holograms and also enables the sharing of true-life experiences in stereoscopy.

Unfortunately I will neither be telling you on this video how to cut your wife into four pieces (she will thank me) nor how to make your car levitate in the air (though it might be very useful when changing the tires)... Professional secrecy.
My main source of inspiration resides in movies, video games and science fiction. Well, what is the common point between TRON, Zelda, Final Fantasy, etc???
Answer: The luminescent shapes which represent electronic circuits or magic spells. I have always been marveled by these visual effects and I do think I am not the only one.
I have recreated this effect on a cube but it can be reproduced on any other object of everyday's life; like a coffee table, a Plexiglas chair, PC modding etc. I have a list of objects I am already working on .
