Realtuned - Vs. Susie (15-TET microtonal cover) HEHEHE I AM A SUPAHSTAR SAGA 2019-11-01 | Happy (late) birthday to Deltarune Chapter 1!I went in a different direction with this cover, and I think it turned out pretty well. The original track is short and simple, but still quite harmonically interesting. That gave me a lot of room to expand it and add new elements.15-TET is very different from what I'm used to. The fifths are very sharp (720 cents), but the thirds are fairly good (320 and 400 cents). Those sharp intervals have an edge that I think works really well for this piece. It's also a good contrast to the flatness of 19-TET.15 factors into 3 and 5, so there are two symmetries available. The 5-symmetry gives you the equipentatonic scale, which is a very nice sound. You also get the ten-tone Blackwood scale (2121212121), which has five major chords and five minor chords. I didn't use these scales much structurally, but they're scattered around the new melodic material.The 3-symmetry let me do a major third cycle in the later part of the piece. The chords are Am - C7 - Fm - Ab7/G#7 - C#m - E7, similar to the Coltrane changes with minor chords in place of maj7 chords. I had some fun writing a quick solo over the progression.These symmetries are another contrast with 19-TET, which has no symmetries. Xen Ashcorp - Absolute Territory (69-cent non-octave tuning) HEHEHE I AM A SUPAHSTAR SAGA 2019-06-22 | It's been just over a year since I did a microtonal cover, and I thought this was a good day to do one. My channel's been focused mainly on 19-TET, so I decided to go more out-there this time.This cover is in 69-cent non-octave tuning. Though I thought of this tuning system as a joke, there are plenty of cool things about it. The fifth is okay at 690 cents, and the major and minor tenths are very nice. There are also two interesting tritones at 552 cents (close to 11:8) and 621 cents (close to 10:7). However, the thirds are very far from 5-limit just thirds. The 3:1 is very far off, which let me do something cool. At bar 79, the b9 of the first V chord becomes the 5th of the second V chord a step higher. It's a really interesting sound which may be usable in other tunings.The melody of the original track leans heavily on the b3, so I put the tonic (the only one I have) in the bass and the b3 in the melody at a minor 10th from that. The melody mostly came through intact, though I had to change some of the notes to avoid detuned octaves. It helped that the whole step in this tuning is quite good at 207 cents. Since a whole step is three small steps in this tuning, I was able to use some of the voice leading I know from 19-TET.The countermelody I came up with is just the bassline shifted over an 8th note, with the notes changed to fit the harmony. I was struggling for sub 40 for days, but this suddenly beat that by nearly four minutes.This speedrun is uniquely difficult because large time losses can appear anywhere in the run. Dying loses so much time that it's not so much a speedrun as it is a low deaths run. The longest screens take 90 seconds to beat.
Penumbra - 19-TET music (8bmt Discord challenge) HEHEHE I AM A SUPAHSTAR SAGA 2019-04-26 | The 8-bit Music Theory Discord server had a challenge recently where users were split into two teams. The dark team had the requirement that, within each measure, each melody line must have more descending leaps than ascending leaps. I was only able to submit a WIP for the actual challenge, but I'm posting the finished-ish version here.I wrote this track entirely in the 14141413 octatonic scale, similar to the half-whole diminished scale in 12-TET. This 19-TET scale is neither symmetrical nor an MOS, but it is made by stacking minor thirds above the root. If you stack one fewer minor third, you get the MOS 1414144.The 4-out-of-19 intervals, semifourths, are enharmonic to augmented seconds in 19-TET. These big gaps remind you of scales such as harmonic minor, but they're in a context where you would expect smaller steps. I like the feel this brings to the scale.
