History with Cy I know that it can be difficult to keep up with many of the political and historical events that make up over 1400 years of documented ancient Assyrian history. To help you out, I’ve created this summary to give you a general idea of the role that the kingdoms and empires of Assyria played in the history of the ancient world, especially the Near East.

It's an incredible story of how the people of a relatively insignificant city-state became one of the greatest superpowers of their time. My hope is that after watching this video, you'll not only have a general understanding of Assyrian (mostly political) history, but also be somewhat familiar with a few of Assyria's great kings such as Tiglath-Pileser, Sargon II, Sennacherib, Esarhaddon, Ashurbanipal and others.

To help you out, I’ve created this summary to give you a general idea of the role that the kingdoms and empires of Assyria played in the history of the ancient world, especially the Near East.

Heads of the Ptolemies in the Louvre...

History with Cy 2024-05-01 | The Ptolemies were a dynasty of Macedonian Greek rulers who reigned over Egypt from the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC until the Roman conquest of the country in 30 BC. The dynasty was founded by Ptolemy I Soter (first statue head from the left), one of Alexander's generals and ended with Cleopatra VII.

These are statue heads are of several members of the Ptolemaic Dynasty.

The Temples of Teotihuacán

History with Cy 2024-04-20 | Teotihuacán is one of the most significant archaeological sites of Mexico. It was one of the largest cities in the ancient world, with an estimated population of over 100,000 people at its peak around 450 AD.

Scattered Candles in the Night – Civilization during the Greek Dark Age (c. 1100-750 BC)

History with Cy 2024-04-18 | The Greek Dark Age, spanning roughly from 1100 to 750 BC, marks a mysterious chapter in the history of ancient Greece. Characterized by a sharp decrease in population, the abandonment of the once might Mycenaean palatial centers, disruption of trade networks, the loss of literacy and a steep decline in artistic endeavors, this time period was generally one of economic hardship and political fragmentation. However, amidst the darkness there were pockets of prosperity and social changes that eventually allowed for the rise of powerful Greek city-states and the dawn of Archaic Greek civilization.

The Ruins of the Temple of Zeus at Nemea

History with Cy 2024-04-08 | Let’s take a quick look at the ruins of ancient city of Nemea in northeastern Peloponnese in Greece. This ancient site holds significant historical and archaeological importance due to its association with the Nemean Games, one of the ancient Greece’s most famous athletic competitions. Today, the most prominent remains of Nemea are the ruins of the temple of Zeus and the scores of broken columns littered throughout the site.

The Mycenaean Citadel of Tiryns in Greece

History with Cy 2024-03-28 | Tiryns is an ancient archaeological site located in the northeastern Peloponnese of Greece, near the modern city of Nafplio. Though occupied for several thousands of years beforehand, Tiryns reached its height between 1400-1200 BC when a great Mycenaean citadel commanded the surrounding countryside from its acropolis.

The citadel’s Cyclopean walls, which reach heights of 13 meters in some places, are a testament to the skill of Mycenaean engineers and their mastery of monumental construction. It is truly an awe-inspiring sight!

History of Ancient Egypt: Dynasty XXI - The Start of the Third Intermediate Period (1069-945 BC)

History with Cy 2024-03-27 | The glorious era of Egyptian history known as the New Kingdom, when Egypt was the envy of the world, went out with a whimper. What came afterward would be a seemingly tumultuous time in Egyptian history that was characterized by political fragmentation, cultural change, rampant corruption and eventually, foreign domination. Egyptologists call the four centuries of so after the New Kingdom era the Third Intermediate Period.

The Third Intermediate Period started with the rise of the 21st Dynasty of Egypt, a time in which both pharaohs and priests ruled the kingdom of the Nile in relative peace. This though was the calm before the storm that would eventually sweep in from the east and change the trajectory of Egyptian history forever.

Takht-e Sulayman / Sasanian Temple of Adur Gushnasp

History with Cy 2024-03-13 | Takht-e Solayman is a UNESCO World Heritage site located today in the West Azerbaijan province of Iran. Though occupied at least since Achaemenid times, the site was most important during the Sasanian period from 3rd to 7th centuries AD when it hosted the Zoroastrian temple of Adur Gushnasp, which was one of the three most sacred fire temples within the Sasanian Empire.

The site was considered to have been sacred for over millennia before that due to a thermal spring lake at its center. I’ll make a video on this place in the future.

History with Cy 2024-03-11 | Located on the southwestern slope of Mount Parnassus, Delphi is one of the most famous archaeological sites in Greece. It was once considered the center of the world in ancient Greek mythology and was dedicated to the god Apollo.

Delphi was primarily known for its oracle and its priestess known as the Pythia, who was believed to have the ability to communicate with Apollo and provide prophecies and guidance to those who sought her counsel.

The Dark Secrets of the Royal Cemetery of Ur

History with Cy 2024-02-05 | Mention the ancient city of Ur and many wonderful things come to mind – the fabulous wealth generated from being one of the Bronze Age’s major trade hubs, its towering ziggurat, great works of Sumerian and Babylonian art, and for believers, the birthplace of the prophet Abraham. But in 1922, archaeologists led by Sir Leonard Woolley discovered findings in the oldest part of its great royal cemetery that shed light on a forgotten, dark chapter in the city's history, one that still puzzles us today. In this program we'll look at some of the dark secrets that were buried in the Royal Cemetery over 4500 years ago.

While it is clear that the people of this civilization were experts in urban planning, sanitation and drainage systems as well as some of the greatest traders of the ancient Bronze Age world, they are also among its most mysterious. This is in part due to their writing system still not being understood as well as the puzzle of their seemingly sudden disappearance from history. Exploring the Royal Necropolis of Naqsh-e Rustam (Achaemenid Tombs / Sasanian Reliefs)

History with Cy 2023-05-08 | A few months ago I got to explore the ruins of the royal necropolis known today as Naqsh-e Rustam. It's here that the four Achaemenid king Darius I (a.k.a. Darius the Great), Xerxes I, Artaxerxes I and Darius II were laid to rest. The site was so special that several Sasanian kings added their own reliefs and inscriptions there, including on the mysterious building known as Ka'bah-e Zardusht. For these and other reasons, Naqsh-e Rustam is one of the most important and interesting archaeological sites with regard to Iran's ancient past.

Naqsh-e Rustam where Darius I, Xerxes, Artaxerxes I and Darius II were laid to rest (Ancient Iran)

History with Cy 2022-11-27 | This is the archaeological site of Naqsh-e Rustam where four Achaemenid Persian kings - Darius I (the Great), Xerxes, Artaxerxes I, and Darius II - were laid to rest. There are also several Sasanian reliefs in the area, a mysterious building called Kaba-e Zardusht and two ancient stone fire altars nearby. It's an incredible site one should visit if given the opportunity.
