Azores Dolphin Watching | Common Dolphins off Faial Island One World 2025-09-07 | I am away on holiday this week, so I have not been able to produce a video, but I thought that you would like to see some video I took of Common dolphins, when I visited the Island of Faial in the Azores, earlier this year.They were amazing and so joyful. I have put it to music - no dialog - so on those winter days when you feel a bit down, you can just watch and feel your spirits lifting. If you want to know anything about Common dolphins, I have put some information below.In the Azores, short-beaked common dolphins can be seen year-round. These dolphins typically measure 6 to 8 feet long and weigh around 170 pounds on average, with males being slightly larger than females.They are easily recognized by their rounded forehead (melon), moderately long rostrum, and 40 to 57 pairs of small, sharp teeth in each jaw. Their sleek bodies feature a tall, triangular dorsal fin positioned mid-back, and their distinctive “hourglass” color pattern makes them one of the most recognizable dolphin species.Short-beaked common dolphins are highly social, often gathering in groups of hundreds, and at times forming mega-pods of several thousand individuals—sometimes as many as 10,000. They are also very active at the surface, frequently seen leaping, bow-riding, and socializing.Although they can dive to 1,000 feet, they usually feed at shallower depths of about 100 feet, targeting schools of fish and cephalopods such as squid, which migrate closer to the surface at night.These dolphins can live up to 35 years. Males typically reach sexual maturity around 10 years of age, while females mature slightly earlier, at about 8 years (though the range is 5 to 12 years).Adult females give birth to a single calf every 2 to 3 years. Newborn calves measure 2.5 to 3 feet long at birth.
