The 55th Presidential election in American history took place on November 2, 2004. A lot had changed since the last election. Just 8 months after George W. Bush became President, terrorists attacked the United States. On September 11, 2001, they hijacked four planes, crashing two of them into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center and another into the Pentagon building. Passengers of the fourth plane regained control to prevent it from hitting its target, which was likely the White House or the Capitol Building. However, that plane crashed in rural Pennsylvania, killing everyone on board. In total, the attacked killed almost 3,000 people and the terrorists got exactly what they wanted- Americans were scared.
In response, George W. Bush took swift action declaring a War on Terror. (clip) Congress passed the Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Terrorists, which pretty much gave Bush lots of leeway in going after those responsible for what became known as the 9/11 attacks.
Bush’s main objective was to destroy Al Qaeda, the terrorist group who took responsibility for 9/11. Many believed that the Taliban, the Afghanistan government at the time, was providing safe haven for Al Qaeda. Bush demanded the Taliban turn over Osama bin Laden and other al-Qaeda leaders hiding out there or face attack. The Taliban didn’t cooperate, so Bush sent troops to invade Afghanistan and overthrow their government. Even today, the United States is still dropping bombs on targets in Afghanistan.
The War on Terror only got bigger. In 2003, Bush sent troops to Iraq to take over and overthrow their dictator Saddam Hussein. So what did Iraq have to do with 9/11? Well, not much, but the Bush administration claimed that Hussein was working with Al Qaeda and that they had weapons of mass destruction. But as it turns out, this was not true at all. The decision to invade Iraq was controversial, with protests in the street similar to the protests against the Vietnam War decades before. The initial overthrow wasn’t as controversial, but after Bush declared “mission accomplished,” basically saying the war was over, our troops stayed there to nation build. (no nation building clip) This proved to be very controversial, because as the United States tried to rebuild Iraq and have them establish a new government similar to theirs, it just wasn’t going so well.
As Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney both sought re-election, there was no end to the Iraq War in sight. Still, they remained popular within the Republican Party, especially after capturing Saddam Hussein, and were both easily renominated.
Many candidates fought for the Democratic Party presidential nomination, but really just three stood out to me as serious contenders. One was John Edwards, a Senator from North Carolina. Another was Howard Dean, the former governor of Vermont. Dean was the first candidate to really use the internet to his campaign’s advantage. His support was very grassroots and he had passionate followers. Dean stood out among the crowd because he was one of the few Democrats to actively speak out against the War in Iraq. But the media kept playing this over and over. And eventually his momentum just sort of fizzled out. The frontrunner throughout the Democratic primaries was John Kerry, a Senator from Massachusetts. Kerry was a safe choice for the Democrats- he had moderate views like Bill Clinton, but was probably more boring than Clinton. While Kerry had voted for the Iraq War, he had criticized Bush’s handling of it and preferred Bush used more diplomacy and less bombs. By Super Tuesday, no one else had a chance. John Kerry was the nominee. Kerry chose John Edwards as his running mate.
So it was George and Dick versus the Johns. Most of the talk leading up to the election was about foreign policy. On the campaign trail, Bush criticized Kerry as a flip flopper on issues and he tried to convince Americans that he was tough on terrorism. Just like Bush’s dad did with Dukakis back in 1988, Bush Jr. tried to convince Americans that Kerry was just another Massachusetts liberal.

The Mason-Dixon line was originally just the boundary between Maryland and Pennsylvania. Now, a DISPUTED border between the two now states but former colonies, but more on that in a bit.
This border was so important that it later became known as the boundary between Southern slave states and Northern free states in the decades before the American Civil War.
Heck, even AFTER the American Civil War it was a big deal, and even today this border marks a significant cultural divide in the United States.

I’m Mr. Beat, the dude who has made a video about every presidential election in American history. One possibility that should terrify ALL AMERICANS is the possibility of the Electoral College being tied.
Yep. Since the total number of electoral votes is an even number (538), there is an ever so slight possibility that the two major party candidates both get 269 electoral votes.
So what happens if the Electoral College is tied? Do we just have a new election? Yes. Yes we do.
In the U.S. House of Representatives. All INCOMING representatives in the House vote to break the tie. HOWEVER, that’s all within their state. Each state only gets ONE VOTE.
So what about the Vice President?
Well the Senate gets to pick that. Each INCOMING senator gets a vote. The way Congress is set up right now, we’d likely have a President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. Woahness.
But keep in mind that it could still be tied in both the House and Senate. If that happens I suggest we just make Charles Barkley president.

West Coast Hotel Co. v. Parrish was a big freaking deal because it effectively ended the Lochner Era, a period in which the Court, more often than not, struck down economic regulations and restrictions on businesses in the name of protecting contracts. President Roosevelt was certainly happy about the decision. In fact, 15 months later he’d sign the Fair Labor Standards Act.

The Doomsday Clock, a symbolic metaphor that represents how likely it is that a human-made, worldwide disaster will kill us all. The closer it is to midnight, the closer we are to that actually happening. Members of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists have been revealing how close we are to global destruction going back all the way to 1947.
Today there are an estimated 12,500 nuclear warheads still in existence.
Now, the fear is that if one government were to ever use a nuclear weapon, the government of the country hit by one would retaliate. The next thing you know, it could spiral out of control. Nukes dropped everywhere and we’re all dead. This fear was THE FEAR that was everywhere during the Cold War.
The end of the Cold War in 1991 got rid of much of those fears of nuclear weapons. Unfortunately, though, the Doomsday Clock has been headed straight for midnight ever since. In recent years, the threat of nuclear war has returned, and it hasn’t been the ONLY thing the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists have been worried about. They’ve also said the lack of support for taking action in response to climate change has led to the Doomsday Clock being closer to midnight.
But the thing is, there were times in recent history in which the Doomsday Clock actually would have arguably been…like…at ONE SECOND to midnight. We just didn’t realize it until later on.
And that’s what this video’s about. Here are three times the world almost ended.
One crazy thing to think about is that you may be watching this video right now or listening…I do realize many of you don’t like to look at my face…whatever. But yeah, you may be consuming this video right now and there might be a nuke about to be launched. Did you hear that? A nuke possibly just almost got launched! And we won’t find out about this for a long time.

Are things not going well for you right now? If so, I’m sorry to hear that. But you could always just sue God.
That’s what a Nebraska state senator named Ernie Chambers did back in 2007. Chambers sued God even though he didn’t believe in him, or her…or whatever. An outspoken atheist, Chambers often criticized Christianity during his 46 years in the Nebraska legislature.
Chambers sued God symbolically, of course. He was trying to prove a point after his colleagues were trying to make it more difficult for poor people to sue others. In court, Chambers accused God of acting like a terrorist, causing natural disasters and widespread panic. No, not the BAND, Widespread Panic. ACTUAL widespread panic.
However, a judge dismissed the suit since Chambers couldn’t let God know about the suit because he didn’t have his…uh…address.
Chambers later replied that he shouldn’t HAVE to let God know because GOD KNOWS EVERYTHING.If Every President Took the Worlds Smallest Political QuizMr. Beat2024-02-20 | Mr. Beat forced every president in American history to take the world's smallest political quiz. Keep in mind that the power of the presidency has significantly grown since George Washington was the country’s first president. Not because the Constitution has changed, but because presidents themselves have expanded their inherent powers. In particular, I’m looking at you, Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Roosevelt, Lyndon Johnson, and George W. Bush. That all said, the president doesn’t control everything, man. So maybe, I don’t know, pay attention to OTHER PEOPLE running for public office this year?
So what did I leave out regarding presidential responsibilities? McDonald v. Chicago opened up a flood of lawsuits, many by the National Rifle Association, against local and state governments across the country. That said, it has not won ALL those lawsuits, and since the decision lower courts have upheld that bans on certain guns is still constitutional, as well as additional restrictions on how people can both get and carry guns. Today, around 45% of American households own at least one gun, and the United States, by far, has the highest gun ownership rate in the world.Where U.S. Presidents Grew UpMr. Beat2024-02-01 | Mr. Beat goes over the states where every president in American history has lived.

#socialstudies #mrbeat #climatechangeLegal Marijuana 10 Years LaterMr. Beat2024-01-01 | It's been exactly 10 years since weed, aka cannabis, aka marijuana, first became legal in the United States. What have been the effects? How has it changed American society?

It was exactly 10 years ago today that marijuana, better known as cannabis, first became legal in the United States…well in Colorado at least. Colorado was the first state to legalize it after around 77 years of it being effectively illegal across the country.
Now that 10 years have passed, how has Colorado and the entire country, for that matter, changed?
The campaign predicts tax revenue to make $2 million within the first year. $10 million? Ha! Colorado ended up making around $70 million in tax revenue that first year and has made more than $2 billion ever since. This money has funded everything from healthcare to education to highways to law enforcement. While more adults now consume marijuana in Colorado, there is no evidence that more kids do. Marijuana DUI arrests have modestly gone up.
Nationwide, cannabis is now completely legal for adults in 24 states, DC, and 3 territories and medically legal in 37 states. What a difference 10 years makes.Protecting Extreme Speech | Snyder v. Snyder v. Phelps reaffirmed the principle that, even if speech is ridiculously offensive and unpopular, it’s still protected by the First Amendment. In other words, the government can’t restrict speech simply because it’s extremely distasteful or causes emotional harm. As long as you protest peacefully on public land, you can pretty much say the most outrageous things imaginable. Indeed, the Phelps still regularly do this. How Many U.S. Representatives Live Outside Their Districts?Mr. Beat2023-12-22 | How many U.S. Representatives don't actually live in the district they are supposed to represent? The answer might surprise you.
U.S. Representatives don’t have to live in the districts they represent.
So theoretically, you could live in Ketchikan, Alaska, and represent the fine folks of Point Hope, Alaska…1,600 miles away.
Oh wait, the entire state of Alaska has only one representative, anyway.
So theoretically, you could live in Brownsville, Texas, and represent the fine folks of Texline, Texas….900 miles away. It’s kinda crazy.
What’s even crazier? According to my research, at least 55 U.S. representatives currently don’t live in the district they represent. Yep, there they all are.
