Why This South Korean Man Closes Dog Meat Farm After 30 Years VICE Asia 2023-08-10 | Today is the last day of Boknal, South Korea’s hottest summer days. It’s traditional to eat special dishes during Boknal, including bosintang, a controversial stew containing boiled dog meat. While traditions are valued in the country, the consumption of dog meat is declining as more people view dogs as companions rather than livestock. According to a 2022 poll of 1,514 respondents, 85.5 percent of Koreans said they don’t consume dog meat. Yang Jong-tae, a dog meat farmer in South Korea, closed down his farm in March after running it for 30 years. The decision came after he was contacted by Humane Society International (HSI), a non-profit organization that is currently campaigning across Asia to end the dog meat trade. The rescued dogs from this operation were transported to the U.S. for adoption.Dog meat trade is not illegal in the country. However, discussions about prohibiting it have been going on for years. In 2021, then-president Moon Jae-in brought up the possibility of banning dog meat. Last June, lawmaker Han Jeoung-ae proposed a bill to ban dog meat entirely. But no changes have been made so far. Shocking Moment a Plane Door Is Opened During a Flight In South Korea VICE Asia 2023-06-01 | A man was arrested after reportedly pulling a lever to open the emergency exit door of an Asiana Airlines flight in South Korea.Viral footage shows winds buffeting rows of seated passengers as the plane comes in to land."It was chaos with people close to the door appearing to faint one by one and flight attendants calling out for doctors on board through broadcasting," a 44-year-old passenger told the Yonhap news agency.The passengers also included school children who were on their way to a sporting event. The mother of one of the students said: “The children were shaking, crying and frightened. Those sitting near the exit must have been shocked the most.”The flight arrived safely at Daegu International Airport, but with the door still open. Several passengers required hospital treatment for breathing problems.Flight attendants could not stop the suspect from opening the door because they were seated for the plane to land. Witnesses say he even tried to jump out of the plane.“It is difficult to have a normal conversation with him,” an official said. “We will investigate the motive of the crime and punish him.”

Watch 200 Dogs Finally Freed From a Dog Meat Farm VICE Asia 2023-05-04 | When animal activist group Humane Society International (HSI) arrived at a dog meat farm in the city of Asan, South Korea on March 7, the dogs didn’t seem to know about the huge changes that would be coming their way. While some dogs were standing, barking, and squeezing themselves through metal cages, others were sitting and trembling. These cages were elevated from the ground and under them were piled up feces.“I don’t mind getting dirty. But it’s emotionally difficult when I see them under extreme stress, because they don’t understand what’s happening,” HSI campaign manager Lee Sang-kyung told VICE, dog feces covering his work clothes as he moved the animals from their cages.“Sometimes, puppies born in this kind of elevated cage lose their lives, stuck in the wire,” Lee said. “Some owners just leave the dead puppies for their mothers to eat. People Do Nothing In This Space Out Competition VICE Asia 2023-04-26 | In this space-out competition, people compete at doing nothing. Last year, it was held on the Jamsu Bridge near the Han River in Seoul, South Korea.Among some 3,800 applicants, 50 teams and individuals were selected and given the chance to zone out for an hour and a half. Participants included young students, office workers, and even actor Um Hyun-kyung.Contestants were ranked based on audience votes and their ability to keep their heart rate stable. VICE talked to some of the participants including this year’s winner.

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan was ousted last year in a no-confidence vote, but polls suggest he remains the country’s most popular political leader. Within a year of being removed from office, 70-year-old Khan has survived an assassination attempt and faces dozens of new charges ranging from corruption, terrorism to sedition. The current government has branded the popular politician known for his philanthropy and cricket career as a "militant" and attempted to arrest him using excessive force, while tear gassing, attacking and arresting his supporters. Dalai Lama Apologizes After Asking Boy To Suck on His Tongue VICE Asia 2023-04-11 | The Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of the Tibetan community, apologized on Monday after a video of him kissing a young boy on the lips sparked outrage. In the same video, he is heard asking the boy to suck his tongue. The video only started circulating on social media recently but was taken during a public event in India in February. In the video, the young boy asks for a hug and the Dalai Lama tells him to come up to the platform where he is seated. Zebra that escaped from Seoul zoo has a heartbreaking backstory VICE Asia 2023-03-28 | On Thursday, a zebra named Sero escaped from the Seoul Children’s Grand Park and was found trotting around the South Korean capital, shocking passersby. Videos of Sero running down brick alleys and swerving cars on a busy road went viral on social media. After a three-hour chase, he was brought back to his pen.But the three-year-old zebra wasn’t always this unruly, zoo officials said.According to a video published by the zoo, Sero’s behavior began changing when he lost his parents in 2021 and 2022. He had tried to fight the kangaroo in the neighboring pen, and also began refusing to eat apples and carrots—food he loved. From Hood Life to Viral Rap Star: Spanian VICE Asia 2023-03-08 | Update:18 days after this video was originally published, Spanian went on a homophobic rant on Instagram comparing the Pride movement with paedophilia, and was subsequently dropped by his label and management company. The following video was filmed and edited prior to Spanian’s hateful and homophobic comments, which VICE strongly condemns.@SPANIAN led a life of crime in the hoods until he discovered rap music in prison. He was put in juvenile detention at the age of 14, shot up heroin around the age of 16, and was in maximum security prison by the time he was 18 years old. He continued with a life of crime until 2017. This was a turning point for him in prison, where he discovered a new passion in life through rap music. Now, Spanian has found unexpected fame producing YouTube videos and rap music inspired by his former criminal life.
