This episode is a bit of a special one - featuring new work exclusively from young aspiring writers around the world. We've got eight original poems and stories to share with you this time around - submissions from China, South Korea, Scotland & even nearby Huddersfield(!). We've also got a special guest Louis Jaffa (@louis_jaffa) in the studio with us, as he helps us explore the challenges young people face when working in the artsOne thing we wanted to add:This episode was recorded prior to the attack that took place in Israel on 7th October. Since then we've been overwhelmed by the suffering taking place in Israel & Gaza. Our hearts go out to all who've suffered in that conflict to date- both Palestinian and Israeli and to anyone living afraid/isolated here in the UK as the war progresses. We're acutely aware of the increase in antisemitism, intolerance and violent rhetoric in the UK over the past fortnight and we hope desperately for a peaceful solution to the current conflict. With such terrible news coming in all of the time and so many innocent people suffering, this episode has reminded us how valuable stories and poetry can be - how fortunate we are to get to listen to each other and how important it is to remember the things we have in common. Thanks so much to these young people for submitting work. He asked me 'Why would I even want to be a poet?' I thought I'd try to give an honest (and slightly silly) answer about how odd the job can be. 'What is a Poem?' is a question I was asked during my first ever Primary School visit (10 years ago!). It was in the middle of an assembly and I kind of messed up my answer. I don't think I was very helpful! I've been thinking about it since, though, & this'd be my answer now.

Many thanks to everyone that joined me live this week for our creative writing class. We had a really enjoyable and nuanced conversation throughout - I'm very fortunate to have such articulate and driven writers joining me.
If you're just coming to this workshop now and would like to join in, you're more than welcome. All you need to do is click play on the video and grab a pen and piece of paper to take part in the activities. Our next session will take place live at 10.30am next Wednesday morning.
Do you have what it takes to make it through 'THE DESERT OF PERFECTION?'
NOTE: This writing workshop was created with secondary school students in mind and was designed to help you to develop your descriptive writing. Anybody is welcome to join us though - I'd love to hear how you found it.
The workshop also looks at how trying to be 'perfect' as a writer can stop us taking risks and getting the most out of our writing. there are some big questions raised by the end that I'm still thinking about now.
I really hope you enjoy it (and that you make a few mistakes along the way).CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOP #10 FOR KS1 & 2: THE GREAT DESERT OF PERFECTIONMark Grist2020-07-15 | It's so, so hot and we have to be perfect in everything we write. Oh my goodness, what do we do next?
