Finally I am releasing the music I created for the game Trism 2. It has taken me far too long to remaster, but here we are.

I wrote this music over the course of 3 years, between 2013 and 2016 in collaboration with the game's creator and director, Steve Demeter. It was a project of passion from both parties; Steve worked tirelessly on the game for many years, collaborating daily with his team of artists, coders, musicians. And as for myself, this was my first big professional project and I *had* to prove myself.

The 21 tracks in this soundtrack are actually 21 of 59 tracks that I fully composed over the three years. We were far too ambitious with the soundtrack, but that's what made it such an exciting thing to work on. I tried to put my everything into every track, and exhausted myself with it to be honest.

Each track went through a lengthy process of feedback and drafting. Some of the tracks you're hearing have had about 20 iterations! But we wanted to get the soundtrack right. Steve and I grew up with video game music (he dates a little further back than I ;) ) and so we really did combine our love for vgm here. I couldn't be happier with the outcome of the compositions, and I see it as some of my best work for the time. The mixing/mastering not so much, but this isn't the time for self-critique. I have to remember that I created these years ago, and I've developed a lot musically since then.

Talking of developing as a musician, this project really taught me a lot about composition. I learned to write music faster, to strict briefs, to make last-minute changes, both small and drastically big. It taught my how to organise my project files (well, I learned this after the project - my Trism 2 folder structure is a MESS), and how to supply work to a client in professional way. It taught me to became unattached to musical sections if it were necessary they be cut (a difficult one indeed..). It taught me how to control my music; I was often told to stop layering so many sounds haha. This resulted in developing a skill in writing ambient music (see Glimmering). I wouldn't be the musician I am now if it weren't for this 3-year labour of love.

Most of the tracks had their purposes shuffled around during game development and after my involvement, and so their titles may not reflect what actually happens in-game alongside the music, but I have a sentimental attachment to the themes I originally wrote these tracks for, hence the possibly unrelated track names. I have also ordered these tracks in a way that doesn't correlate to the game's events, but rather as a music album. I have spent the last 3-4 days deciding on an order for these tracks; I want the album to be an experience (pretentious, I know).

'Initiation' is an arrangement of an old demoscene track that I can't find any information about other than it was written by a "Wayne Kerr" of "Reality", and is originally titled emag005. 'Silver Light' is an arrangement of a tune called Silvia's Theme from the game Whale's Voyage. 'Infinism' is a remix of my own work that I created for the first Trism soundtrack (which I wrote retroactively during the Trism 2 soundtrack writing). Check it out, it's on my channel!

I'd like to write more about the process of writing this soundtrack, but I'll leave that for a blog post. For now, hope you enjoy this score! 16-bit Platformer Music | Level One Theme

Adam Haynes 2023-07-23 | Using SNES-style samples, this is a track I created for an imaginary 16-bit platform game, with a Kirby-esque style. It's the kind of upbeat tune that would likely appear on the first level of a platformer, where the player is being introduced to game, and aesthetically talking the level would have grassy hills, clouds, flowers, critters etc - you know the kind of level I'm talking about. Anime Opening Theme Music - Original Composition

Adam Haynes 2019-09-14 | This is a piece of music commissioned for an original animation, inspired by Japanese anime. The animation is currently on hiatus but the composition is finished, so I am sharing it here.

I was commissioned to make something stylish, energetic, and to tell a story, whilst encapsulating the theme of the characters and the world the story is set in. Hopefully I achieved that.

It was the first time I'd properly composed "full-length" pieces, having only produced short segments before that. At the time I had decided to return to education and do a bachelor's degree in music composition, and a demo CD was a requirement of the application.

I thought it would be interesting to release these tracks publicly, as this month is the 10th anniversary of my university starting date. One of these tracks (Boat Adventure) has been available on my Soundcloud for a while, but the other 3 tracks have remained unheard outside of family.

These were created using Edirol Orchestral VST, and you can tell. The samples aren't great, but I did the best I could with them.

I will be reorchestrating these tracks soon :-)

Hello! This is the first track in my new series of 16-bit compositions. I've really enjoyed creating 8-bit music recently, and decided to have a go at creating some Mega Drive-esque music.

I had to do a bit of research in how Mega Drive/Genesis music is constructed - chips, channels, etc. It took a bit of understanding but I think I get the picture now. I've had a go at creating something here that sounds as authentic as possible (except the reverb).

The Sega Mega Drive was the second game system I ever owned (after the Amiga), and whilst I didn't have a wealth of games for the system (I was like 7 years old I think) the music really stuck with me. I've also recently been enjoying listening to old Mega Drive soundtracks that I've never heard before.

My composition here is clearly influenced by the amazing Streets of Rage soundtracks by Yuzo Koshiro. This is my first attempt at creating some authentic 16-bit music so it's a little basic right now but I'm hoping to get better at it.

Pokémon Sword and Shield - Route 1 music, Galar region (fan-made)

Adam Haynes 2019-03-08 | Hello! It's been a while. Here I am with my first piece of 2019.

With the newly announced Pokémon Sword and Shield, I just had to create a fan-made theme or two. This is a piece for "Route 1", i.e. the first route of the game, the easiest of routes, the safest of routes (safe and easy could describe my piece if I was being critical ;) )

The region of Galar is an England-inspired land, so what better music to pastiche than British Light Music. There have always been influences from Elgar and Vaughan-Williams in my composition work, so this was familiar ground for me.

My composition here is a bit wobbly, and a little rushed, but with my limited time now I didn't want this to be sitting in the "to-do" folder along with the hundreds of other unfinished pieces. I'm fairly happy with it, but I know I could do better. To make up for it, I'd like to go a Gameboy version and a Nintendo DS version (coming soon!)

As for the new game - not really sure tbh! Initial impressions of the new Pokémon were meh, there are far more creative fan-made Mon out there. Sobble is by far the best-designed, and charmingly-named too - I mean, Scorbunny? Come on, man...

Hope you enjoy this one. Not the most creative or exciting piece to release after a 7-8 month hiatus, but hey ho.

I worked on the soundtrack during an early period of the game's development, around 2013 to 2015, so it's been a while since I've even listened to my pieces for game. Cerulean City Remix / Arrangement ~ Pokémon Red, Blue, Yellow

Adam Haynes 2018-06-20 | I've returned to my roots with this one; this is a very simple arrangement of the Cerulean City theme from Pokémon Red Blue and Yellow. My very first Pokemon music arrangements from about 6 years were super simplistic and far less ambitious than some of the arrangements I've done in the past couple of years. I don't know why but I felt like returning to that simpler sound for Cerulean City.

I've recently been a fan of adding sound effects or ambient sound to my music. When I do this I always lay down the sound effects first - in this case, the sound of rain. This is like when an artist, instead of beginning to paint on a blank canvas, has something already etched onto the cavas, or some masking tape laid down to create a shape. It gives you a backdrop, or an enclosure, to work against, and this can evoke more creativity in my opinion. And I have enjoyed doing this immensely.

There are two more Pokémon RBY arrangements in the works from me, and are close to completion. So stay tuned.

Gold Saucer ~ Final Fantasy VII Piano Quintet Arrangement

Adam Haynes 2018-04-24 | The next in my series of Final Fantasy VII Piano Quintet arrangements, Gold Saucer - which also happens to be one of my favourite tunes from FFVII.

I have so much fun writing these. I feel like the piano quintet is my perfect ensemble of instruments; you can create so much depth with this and, as I'm discovering, you can arrange such a variety of music for it.

No explanation for this one really, it's a theme to a boss battle! Not one of those important boss battles with a key character, but some kind of generic boss at the end of a dungeon or something. Not my most inspired piece but wanted to put it out there.

Hårgalåten (Swedish Folk Music) for Piano

Adam Haynes 2018-04-12 | This is Hårgalåten (or Horgalåten), a traditional Swedish folk song, which I have arranged for piano. This is a very simple arrangement and easy to play along with. If you would like it scored, please let me know.

I chose to arrange this tune for piano because it's one of my favourite melodies. I first heard it years ago on a death metal album, Lunar Strain by In Flames. It has always been my "go-to" tune to play when warming up my fingers on the keyboard as it's so painfully simple. What you're hearing now is 90% my recorded performance - I edited some duff notes and pacing here and there to make it listenable ;-)

The original folk lyrics tell of the tale of the devil, cunningly disguised as a fiddler, who lures children in with his music. The children would dance until they dropped dead. Love it.

The title is pretty self-explanatory - this is music intended for a royal castle of some sort. This setting is a classic trope in old school RPGS; perhaps the player arrives at the castle very early on in the game and finds that something tragic has happened - a kidnapped princess or a stolen crystal. And the King personally needs your help!

Anyway here's the kind of music you can imagine playing in this castle.

Here is some 8-bit music I've composed! It's the start of an 8-bit music series I'm doing, which will involve composing short tracks that fit the classic retro genres, such as RPG, Platformer, Action Adventure, Puzzle, you get the idea.

This first piece is the kind of music you'd hear on the prelude/prologue of an RPG, whether it occurs before or after the main title screen. In my head, I imagined a simple background, perhaps of a castle, with slow scrolling text filling in the player with some story context. A classic way to start an RPG!

I've strictly used 4 channels of sound here, to try and keep it as authentic as possible. I didn't use a tracker, I used the Super Audio Boy VSTi. I love it, but I wish I had picked up Super Audio Cart in the Black Friday sale. Big regrets there. Hopefully it's on sale again over Christmas!

I've stuck my own reverb on it as a personal preference, so it loses some authenticity there.
