The End of an Era

bananacactus 2023-02-01 | A big (small) announcement about the future of the channel!

Over the last 8 years, I've made over 40 instrumental ukulele videos for BananaCactus Ukulele. I've loved (and also hated parts of) creating each one of them. However, I've been feeling a rift lately between the videos and music I think I should make for the channel and what I actually want to make. There's lots more that I want to explore musically and creatively that I won't be able to if I'm limiting myself to only instrumental ukulele videos. In order to keep my creative train rolling on, I'm making a change: the channel will now simply be called bananacactus.

There will still be plenty of ukulele playing in the videos! It's just not always going to be the central focus. Instead, the focus will be more on music and creativity in a broader sense. I'm excited to try lots of new stuff out.

I first got into the Chili Peppers when I was in middle school, a couple years after Stadium Arcadium came out. I have a vivid memory of telling a drum teacher that they were my favorite band, only to have him inform me that they had just broken up. Turns out they were just taking a break, but after spending the next several years obsessing over their entire discography and learning everything there was to know about the band's history, I knew that my favorite music of their's was the stuff with Frusciante, so I was bummed that he wasn't rejoining the band. I enjoyed and appreciated I'm With You and The Getaway, but the music just didn't hit me as hard as their classics. Needless to say, I was pumped for Unlimited Love. There's nothing quite like hearing a new album from your favorite lineup of your favorite band for the first time 15 years into being a fan. And I love the album. So many great tracks, and listening to it has me feeling the same as when I first fell in love with them back in middle school. This is my take on one of my favorite songs from the new album, White Braids & Pillow Chair.

The video kinda explains itself, but here's an elaboration of the scoop. Most of my videos take weeks or sometimes months to make. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, but posting 3-4 videos a year isn't exactly a recipe for success on YouTube. While there is a large amount of work that goes into the videos, I think part of the reason they often take so long is mental. It's as if because my previous videos have all taken a while, I've convinced myself that any new video won't be as good unless I spend an equally long amount of time on it. This manifests itself in the form of hours and hours spent tweaking tiny details that nobody but me will notice. I don't mean to devalue hard work or pouring endless hours into your craft; I think the best art comes from obsession. But sometimes I feel like I can be too hard on myself, and obsess in way that doesn't actually benefit the project at all. The reality is that each project is different — some might require multiple years to create while others may only need a few days.

So I made this video to challenge that mental barrier. Spend one day arranging & recording a cover and filming the process, spend the next day mixing the track and editing the video, and release the video the following day. No extra time spent dwelling on minute details or trying to get the perfect shot. And wouldn't you know it, I really like how it turned out.

I began working on this medley in February of 2020 and didn't finish it until two years later, due mainly to my own inability to stay motivated long enough to finish the project in one go. Among other things, this is a video about what the creative process feels like to me; how fun and effortless it feels when it's going great, how down you can get on yourself when it's not, and the cyclical nature of it all.

BEST OF 2020 | BananaCactus Ukulele

bananacactus 2020-12-29 | A look back at all the BCU videos from the past year. This is the best of 2020! Between climbing 20 feet up a tree with all of my instruments and camera gear, paddling an inflatable raft in all five of the Great Lakes, riding a bike around Cape Cod while taking hundreds of pictures of watercolor-painted paper birds, gluing cherries together so I could hang them from the paper mache tree that I spent way too long attaching tiny leaves to, and even trying my hand at a jazz cover, this year was full of memorable BananaCactus Ukulele moments. Whitney is a Chicago-based band whose music I couldn't help but fall in love with when I first heard it. Their unique blend of soul-tinged indie folk-rock feels like it just melts into your ears. Their songs are melodic and beautiful, while also maintaining the raw, spontaneous energy you'd expect from such a large band (they have eight members at the time of this video's release). I really enjoyed arranging these instrumental ukulele covers as it forced me to listen closer to the many different layers of their sound, and it left me with a much deeper appreciation for their music. If you're unfamiliar with Whitney, I'd recommend listening to their 2016 debut album, "Light Upon The Lake".

I first heard Ben Howard during a yoga class. It was his song "Nica Libres At Dusk", and the ambient guitar sound in the post-chorus instrumental instantly hooked me. I remember then listening to all of his albums, and being struck by how uniquely interesting and enjoyable they each were, despite being quite a bit different from one another. I really like Ben's guitar playing - it's technical and impressive, but in a way that soothes you instead of forcing you to notice. I enjoy how each of his songs grows and takes you along on a journey. And I admire his knack for experimenting with unusual sounds, melodies, and techniques without neglecting to start with a simple, well-written song at the core. To me, "Old Pine" has all of those qualities, making it a great representation of his music as a whole.

A quick note regarding trees: Trees are very durable plants. While hammering into them does create a small wound, no serious or lasting harm is done if the tree is healthy, which was the case for all trees used in this video. According to Grant Jones, the technical advisor with Davey Tree Company in Kent, OH, after a nail is inserted into a tree, "The tree should compartmentalize and heal the wound around it."

Making A Song In Every Town In Massachusetts

Massachusetts has been my home for my entire life. It’s where I’ve grown up and made so many of my fondest memories. One day I had a thought: I’m an adventure nut — I’ve crossed the United States by car multiple times and travelled to a number of different countries around the globe — and yet there are still places in my home state that I’ve never seen. I wanted to explore all the cities and towns that I had heard of but never been to. And so this project came to be.

I wrote the song, and then over the course of three months in the summer of 2017, my girlfriend and I went road tripping (and ferry tripping) around Massachusetts to record it. In every town, we stopped at one of the state’s distinct white town line signs, set up the camera and a mic, and recorded a single note on the ukulele. Yeah, there were some long days, but it was absolutely worth it. Massachusetts is such an incredible and beautiful state; from the big cities to the small farm towns, there’s a place for everyone to enjoy themselves. I highly recommend getting out and exploring more of the area you live in. I would do it again in an instant.
