This direct-fusion propulsion system is based on investigations by MSNW LLC of Redmond WA, and the University of Washington.
Magneto-Inertial Fusion - a type of Magnetised Target Fusion (MTF) - is used to create a Field Reversed Configuration (FRC) plasmoid. Compression of the FRC plasmoid via magnetically imploded Lithium liners achieves a "fusion pulse" at an appropriate scale suitable for spacecraft propulsion. High velocity thrust is produced with an expected ISP of ~5000-sec and Jet Power of 36MW.
Low mass Lithium metal foil liners are inductively driven to converge and form a metal blanket, a shell around the (FRC) plasmoid target, which is then compressed magnetically to attain fusion conditions. The resulting fusion reaction instantly vaporises and ionises the metal shell. Hot, ionised metal exhaust expands through the magnetically insulated nozzle to produce high thrust.
The system's inherent thermal efficiency reduces the need for large radiators to handle waste heat. It is assumed that initially the FDR will employ solar panels for house keeping power, however eventually it would be derived directly from nozzle flux compression.

Alpha LEO Station is a somewhat unique design which addresses the requirements for a permanent low Earth orbit base for supporting asteroid mining operations.
The design features a substantial full-1G crew habitat and counterweight each on a 100m arm, attached to a central magnetic-sleeve hub that works as a virtually frictionless bearing. This habitat "rotor" rotates at 3 RPM to provide simulated gravity.
Another feature is the large pressurisable "Garage" for servicing and assembly of spacecraft and other hardware. It's also used to process & refine asteroid material to produce fuel, water and construction materials, as well as Platinum Group Metals.
The station includes a couple of "Storm Cellar" modules for crew protection against solar flares: one in the lower boom shielded by fuel storage tanks, and one in the stator between the airlock and the garage, shielded by general storage and material containers.
The design proposes a clever solution for attitude and stability issues associated with rotating modules in space, by using a long gravity-gradient-boom to tidally-lock the station to the Earth, with the boom pointing toward the Earth's centre-of-gravity. As a bonus, this provides the ability to nudge modest payloads into higher orbits by launching them from the upper-end of the boom. Another possibility is to extend a skyhook cable from the end of the lower-boom, for retrieving payloads in lower orbits, much like the orbital-tether concept.

In the 60's Philip Bono pioneered re-usable single-stage-to-orbit (SSTO), vertical take-off and vertical-landing (VTOVL) spacecraft design.
Bono was an engineer at Douglas Aircraft Company (which eventually merged with McDonnell Aircraft in 1967 to form McDonnell Douglas).
Bono was a visionary and inventive engineer whose work influenced spacecraft design for many years.
Based on his work was the famous "Delta Clipper" (McDonnell Douglas DC-X/A), a re-usable VTOVL which flew in the early 90's - more than two decades before Space-X's remarkable achievements.
Amongst Bono's innovations was a reusable plug-nozzle rocket engine which doubled as a liquid-hydrogen-cooled heatshield.
Bono was an advocate of intercontinental sub-orbital transport, which could drastically reduce international travel time.
For example: New York to Singapore in approximately 40 minutes.
One of his designs was "Pegasus", a ballistic VTOVL launch vehicle.
Pegasus could provide rapid Intercontinental transport for 170+ passengers, or deliver ~91 tonnes to 560km orbit.
Technically, Pegasus was a semi-SSTO (Single-Stage-To-Orbit) vehicle, as it used re-usable drop tanks to achieve orbit. This reduced total mass for better control during the re-entry phase.
A variable-geometry configuration was also proposed, to provide aero-braking and attitude control during re-entry, primarily as a military transport.

This animation was commissioned by Jason Gruber of IMSG Laboratories Inc to demonstrate a method of micro-gravity mitigation. The idea is that acceleration/deceleration imposes "forces" on the body that act and feel like gravity. The traditional centrifugal artificial gravity(AG) can cause unwanted side-effects. Linear AG seeks to address this by minimising the side-effects, while maximising the therapeutic effects.

A conceptual vehicle design enabling fast, piloted outer solar system travel was created predicated on a small aspect ratio spherical torus nuclear fusion reactor. The initial requirements were satisfied by the vehicle concept, which could deliver a 172 mt crew payload from Earth to Jupiter rendezvous in 118 days, with an initial mass in low Earth orbit of 1,690 mt.
Engineering conceptual design, analysis, and assessment was performed on all major systems including artificial gravity payload, central truss, nuclear fusion reactor, power conversion, magnetic nozzle, fast wave plasma heating, tankage, fuel pellet injector, startup/re-start fission reactor and battery bank, refrigeration, reaction control, communications, mission design, and space operations.
Detailed fusion reactor design included analysis of plasma characteristics, power balance/utilization, first wall, toroidal field coils, heat transfer, and neutron/x-ray radiation. Technical comparisons are made between the vehicle concept and the interplanetary spacecraft depicted in the motion picture 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Here's a little introduction to the Kalpana One space settlement, followed by a rotation and fly-past.
Kalpana One is a modern space-settlement design conceived in the mid-2000's by Al Globus, Nitin Arora, Ankur Bajoria and Joe Strout.
Kalpana was named in honour of Dr Kalpana Chawla, India's first female astronaut and one of the seven crew members who perished in the 2003 Space Shuttle Columbia tragedy.
Kalpana refines and improves upon earlier designs from the 1970's, especially in the areas of rotational stability and thermal management.

This video illustrates an idea from the golden-age of Science-Fiction and early space-exploration: The Asteroid Colony.
The idea of an asteroid inhabited by human colonists has been around for some time, with many examples from classic SF and TV:

Over the years many different approaches have been suggested for carrying out such an ambitious piece of engineering. One of the most intriguing of the "real-life" proposals was the "Cole Bubbleworld" by the visionary Dandridge Cole in the 60's.
This video is an attempt to visualize such an artefact. It's my take on Cole's concept...with a few enhancements.
While researching the subject, it soon became apparent that the idea is very likely impossible to achieve. We now know a lot more about asteroid composition than was available to Cole when he first proposed the idea 50 years ago...
Asteroid composition and cohesiveness are important attributes which affect structural strength and stability of the asteroid body. Most asteroids appear to be too fragile and unstable to attempt excavation on a large scale.
In any case, for the purposes of this video, I have chosen to conveniently ignore these (and many other) problems!
The technology illustrated is purely speculative! While I've tried to be reasonably faithful to the science, please bear in mind that I am not a scientist. In some sequences I've sacrificed authenticity for "drama" in order to evoke a feeling or to add interest -- hopefully I've succeeded!
For the stuff I got right, all credit goes to the references below. Any errors are purely my own.

I just needed something futuristic-looking to add a bit more interest to the Habitat background, and this model is simply my take on the flying-car concept.

Orbital Habitat -------------------- Based on the famous Stanford Torus. The original Stanford Torus was designed to accommodate approximately 10,000 people. As with the original concept, the idea is for this to be a permanent colony in space. It is home to the people who would build and maintain an array of solar-power-satellites.
Sunlight and the Mirror Systems -------------------------------------------- Other similarities with the Stanford Torus are the mirror systems used to direct sunlight into the colony. The primary sun-mirror is a disc approximately 2km in diameter composed of aluminium coated mylar film, or similar material. The mirror directs sunlight to the secondary "conical" mirror array. The conical mirrors are composed of panels that can be tilted to direct light away or towards the inner surface of the colony, in order to simulate the night-day cycle. By varying the day length, seasons can be simulated as well.
Radiation Shielding --------------------------- One major design factor is radiation shielding. For that reason the colony is positioned edge-on to the sun, to place as much mass between solar-radiation/cosmic-particles and the inhabitants as possible. The original Stanford Torus calls for a non-rotating ring of shield material (lunar/asteroid rock and slag) encompassing the rotating habitat ring. The necessary shield amount for that design was in the order of 10 megatons which made it too massive to rotate at the correct rate. It would fly apart due to structural stresses produced by rotation. Therefore the shield would need to be rotated slower, or not at all.
This design would need somewhat more shielding since it is larger, probably approaching 30 megatons or more. I chose not to illustrate the shield-ring, for "artistic" purposes. If enough people want it visualised, I'll add it :)

A fanciful conception of a multi-generation star-ship/habitat. Probably not very realistic or feasible - just playing with the idea...
The generation-ship concept involves generations of colonists living out their lives aboard the star-ship, and centuries later their descendants arrive at the destination.
The concept doesn't rely on exotic technologies such as faster-than-light travel, hyperdrive, etc. Its not a new idea. Several well-known science fiction writers have dealt with the subject, most notably Robert Heinlein in "Universe", Arthur C Clarke in "Rendezvous With Rama", and Van Vogt in "Far Centaurus".
Heinlein's colonists lived in an enclosed habitat. Their society declined over time, and eventually they forgot that they lived on an artificial structure.
Rama's aliens, their nature and motives were never fully revealed but Clarke hinted at suspended-animation techniques used to survive the long journey.
Van Vogt's colonists finally arrive at their destination after centuries in flight only to find the system already colonised by Earth, with the aid of advanced technologies.

By popular demand: Ok, some people didn't like the "artsy-fartsy" effects on the original edit of Part 1.
Also, I re-rendered the clips at 640x480 at 30fps NTSC format which youTube seems to like, so hopefully the frame-jerk problems that affected the original PAL version are now no longer evident!

Just a little looping video of a "flycycle" (personal flying vehicle from Larry Niven's Ringworld novels) flying over an alien planet orbiting a blue giant star. Software used is Imagine2 and Terragen.
