Los glow sticks normalmente están diseñados por una barra plástica que contiene en su interior los reactivos y el catalizador para llevar cabo la reacción de quimioluminiscencia. El catalizador se encuentra separado del reactivo por una capsula de vidrio que se está empacada dentro de la barra platica y que una vez se rompe empieza la reacción química.
La reacción quimioluminiscente se inicia mediante la oxidación del éster de oxalato en presencia de peróxido de hidrógeno y catalizada por una base tal como acetato de sodio. El producto de oxidación inicial es 1,2-dioxetanediona, que se descompone rápidamente en dióxido de carbono excitado electrónicamente. Por sí solo, esto no hará una quimioluminiscencia eficiente, pero un tinte fluorescente puede capturar la energía del CO2 de manera eficiente y liberarla en forma de luz visible.

The thermodynamics of glasses were reviewed and how the state of a glass is influenced by different methods of preparation was briefly described. A qualitative description of glasses within the framework of the potential energy landscape was presented, with an emphasis on the configurational entropy. Relaxation processes in glasses were also discussed, including physical aging, sub-Tg relaxations, and quantum tunneling two-level systems. Along the way, the audience was led to understand what is wrong with these statements: 1) All glasses with a given composition have the same properties. 2) Nothing can move in a glass. 3) There is nothing interesting about glasses.

Triboelectricity, more commonly known as static electricity, is a common phenomenon. Here we show how to build a low-cost "triboelectric nanogenerator", a device that utilizes triboelectricity to convert kinetic energy into electrical energy. Scientists and engineers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison are designing and optimizing devices like these with the goal of producing clean, renewable energy for a myriad of applications from powering buildings to portable electronics.
