Data Science Meets Fusion Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory 2023-05-30 | On December 5, 2022, researchers at LLNL’s National Ignition Facility (NIF) conducted the first experiment to ever achieve net energy gain from nuclear fusion. Nuclear fusion drives our sun and all the stars in the night sky, and harnessing it would mean a future of limitless carbon-free, safe, clean energy. After several decades of research, fusion breakeven at NIF brings humanity one step closer to that dream. However, the experiment’s result was not actually that surprising. A team leveraging data science techniques developed and used a landmark system for teaching artificial intelligence (AI) to incorporate and better account for different variables and experimental scenarios, creating specific parameters for simulations leading up to the successful December experiment. Unique among data compressors, zfp is designed to be a compact number format for storing data arrays in-memory in compressed form while still supporting high-speed random access. zfp divides multidimensional arrays into small blocks that are independently compressed and decompressed on demand when an array element is accessed, without the application’s knowledge. The Beamline to Ignition Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory 2022-11-07 | What happens when 192 of the world’s highest-energy lasers converge on a target the size of a peppercorn filled with hydrogen atoms? Answer: the same thing that happens inside the Sun and the stars: fusion! The National Ignition Facility’s (NIF) laser beams can create nuclear fusion in the laboratory by generating the same kinds of temperatures and pressures that exist in the cores of stars and giant planets and inside nuclear weapons.In this video, you can follow the journey of NIF’s laser beams as they increase in energy from 1 billionth of a joule to 2 million joules of ultraviolet energy by the time they reach the center of the Target Chamber. There, an array of diagnostic instruments measure what happens when the target capsule implodes and the hydrogen atoms inside fuse in a controlled thermonuclear fusion reaction, releasing enormous amounts of energy. Exascale! With advanced processors and cutting-edge components from Hewlett Packard Enterprise and AMD, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s first exascale-class supercomputer, El Capitan, is projected to exceed 2 exaFLOPS (two quintillion floating point operations per second) of peak performance, making it one of the most powerful supercomputers (if not THE most powerful) in the world when it comes online. Initially, El Capitan will be made available for open science applications, before being fully dedicated to national security work and ensuring the National Nuclear Security Administration laboratories — LLNL, Sandia National Laboratories and Los Alamos National Laboratory — can meet their mission goals of keeping the nation’s nuclear stockpile safe, secure and reliable. When the exascale era arrives at LLNL, researchers will be able to more efficiently model and simulate complex physics with a level of detail, accuracy and realism not possible today. Exascale Computing Facility Modernization Project Powers LLNL into Exascale Era Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory 2022-09-30 | A supercomputer doesn’t just magically appear, especially one as large and as fast as Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s (LLNL) upcoming exascale-class El Capitan. Projected to be among the world’s most powerful supercomputers when it is deployed at LLNL in 2023, El Capitan at peak will require about as much power as a small city. Preparing the Livermore Computing Center for El Capitan and the Exascale Era of supercomputers, capable of calculations in the quintillions per second, required an entirely new way of thinking about the facility’s mechanical and electrical capabilities — a utility-scale solution. More than 15 years in planning and development, the $100 million Exascale Computing Facility Modernization (ECFM) project nearly doubles the energy capacity of the Lab’s main computing facility to 85 megawatts – enough electricity to power about 75,000 modest-sized homes. It also expands the facility’s water-cooling system capacity from 10,000 tons to 28,000 tons. The ECFM project required an extensive permitting process, coordination with local utility companies and the contributions of hundreds of people. After breaking ground in 2020, construction crews installed a 115kV transmission line, air switches, substation transformers, a switchgear, relay control enclosures, 13.8 kilovolt secondary feeders and cooling towers In an area adjacent to Building 453 — the Lab’s main computing facility. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the project was finished under budget and months ahead of schedule, completed on June 8, 2022. The upgrade will enable LLNL and the two other National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) laboratories—Los Alamos and Sandia—to use El Capitan and other next-generation supercomputers in the coming years to regularly perform the advanced modeling and simulation necessary to meet the increasingly demanding needs of NNSA’s Stockpile Stewardship Program, which ensures the safety, security and reliability of the nation’s nuclear deterrent.Learn more: exascale.llnl.govLLNL-VIDEO-840463#LLNL #Exascale #LLNLcomputing

LLNL 70th Anniversary Lab Director Panel Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory 2022-09-14 | On a historic occasion in the Livermore wine country, the nine living Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) directors gathered on Sept. 8, 2022 to mark the Laboratory’s 70th anniversary, share stories and discuss their vision for the Lab in the coming years. Hosted by the nonprofit Livermore Lab Foundation, a panel discussion brought past directors John Foster Jr., John Nuckolls, Bruce Tarter, George Miller, Parney Albright and Bill Goldstein together with current director Kim Budil at one table, altogether spanning nearly seven decades of LLNL leadership. Two other previous directors — Michael May and Michael Anastasio — participated via prerecorded talks. Counselor to the LLNL Director Ron Lehman served as panel moderator. Focused on the Lab’s 70th anniversary theme, “Making the Impossible Possible,” the distinguished panelists shared anecdotes from LLNL’s past and discussed challenges facing the Lab in the 21st century, particularly in maintaining operational excellence in an evolving world and attracting and retaining employees amid a changing workplace environment and shifting demographics. More than 200 people were on hand for the event, including many current and retired LLNL employees, dignitaries and local elected officials.
