Glaciers, falling risk, huge walks, cold weather, and massive elevation gains.
Does Difficulty Affect U.S. State High Points Ascents? 24 Pages Posted: Linus Wilson University of Louisiana at Lafayette - College of Business Administration
Date Written: July 20, 2023
Abstract We develop a six-factor ranking of U.S. state high points. While this index is significantly associated with fewer ascents, only one of the six factors drives that result. Technical difficulty is the only measure of high point difficulty that significantly discourages summits. Climbers seem indifferent to physical effort required and are significantly attracted to higher elevation U.S. state high points. We also show popular through hikes near the high point are associated with significantly more summits. This indicates that mountain communities could see surges in tourism if a route to the summit was made less technically difficult.

Copyright Linus Wilson, Oxriver Publishing, Vermilion Advisory Services, LLC, 2022TIPS to HIGH POINT Mt. Elbert the Top of Colorado and the Rockies, 14,440Slow Boat Sailing2023-07-10 | We show you the secrets of summitting the High Point of the state of Colorado, Mount Elbert at 14,440' above sea level, (the third highest overall) and the highest mountain in the Rockies. We take the standard (shortest) route to the top from the North Trailhead. We climbed on June 9, 2023.
Mount Elbert is Colorado's highest peak and the second highest peak in the lower 48 states with an elevation of 14,433 feet. There are two main routes to the summit, which are the South Mt. Elbert Trail and the North (Main) Mt. Elbert Trail, both being well trodden class one trails. These relatively easy paths to the summit are busy in the summer, attracting all types of hikers and climbers. .... North (Main) Elbert Trail is 4.3 miles long and is located off the Halfmoon Road (FSR 110) southwest of Leadville. The trailhead is just past Elbert Creek Campground. With an elevation gain of 4,400 feet, this trail can be quite strenuous, but definitely rewarding."

Park at the large parking lot on the right as the road levels off. (This parking area is before the Bavarian).
Trail Description
The trail follows the Williams Lake Trail almost to the lake before heading to the summit for an additional 2 miles. Start by hiking south on the broad trail from the parking lot. Walk past a small pond on the left then continue past the restaurants and ski area facilities. After the base of the chairlift continue south on the broad trail on the left. After a short distance take another left. This is the Williams Lake Trail #62. This area is very well marked. ... Because the tread is narrow and uneven, built through several scree fields, no equestrian travel is permitted on trail #67. The trail traverses several switchbacks, stay on the trail to prevent falling rock and trail degradation. Please stay off the steep “old route”; it is undergoing rehabilitation efforts by the Carson National Forest. Above tree line enjoy the stunning views throughout the rest of the trail. In approximately 2 miles from the Williams Lake Trail junction, trail #90 is reached. Hike to the right continuing south a short distance to the Wheeler Peak summit, 13,161 feet.
Note: There is no horseback riding on the new Wheeler Peak Summit Trail #67.
Trail Beginning: 10,200 feet
Trail Ending: 13,161 feet
Length: 2.2 miles (4.1 miles one way from Williams Lake Trailhead)
Difficulty: Intermediate to Expert
Elevation Gain: 2,961 feet

See travelsouthdakota.com/trip-ideas/photo-essay/black-elk-peak "At 7,242 feet, Black Elk Peak isn’t just South Dakota’s highest point. It’s also the highest elevation between the Rocky Mountains in the western United States and the Pyrenees Mountains in France. Surrounded by the beautiful Black Elk Wilderness in Custer State Park, Black Elk Peak is one of the most popular sites in the state. ... The peak also features a stone fire tower built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1938. .. The most common way to ascend the peak is Trail No. 9, which begins by Sylvan Lake in Custer State Park. This is an easy hike that gets moderate in parts, but there are plenty of nice spots to stop for a drink of water and a picture. (Make sure you bring your own hydration, as there’s no water available on the trails.) ... 1) Sylvan Lake #9 Roundtrip distance: 7 miles Roundtrip time: 2-4 hours Elevation: 1,100 feet Difficulty: Easy with some steep spots Directions: The trailhead is easy to locate from the parking lot beside Sylvan Lake. It is the most traveled and shortest route to Black Elk Peak.

We take the longer but more gentle (and less crowded) horse trail which was close to 10 miles with 3,000 of elevation gain. We tell you where to stay, what to bring, and what to expect on this strenuous hike.
"Climb to the "Top of Texas" with a hike up Guadalupe Peak. Guadalupe Peak is a rewarding, although very strenuous, 8.4 mile round trip hike with a 3,000 foot elevation gain. It will take from six to eight hours to complete the hike.
The peak provides fantastic views from the highest point in the state of Texas (8,751 feet / 2,667 meters). It also introduces hikers to several of the park’s ecosystems including the high desert and the high elevation forests. On a clear day you will be rewarded with a tremendous view of the surrounding mountains and desert. Stop for a while and enjoy the view before beginning the hike back down."

We show you how to get to the 8.4 mile hike trailhead and give you all the secrets of this high point 1/4 of a mile from New Mexico in the western panhandle of the Sooner state.
Summit post writes "The highest point in Oklahoma, Black Mesa, is 1,517 m (4,975 ft) above sea-level. This area is found in the extreme western part of the state's Panhandle, and is named for the dark pumice found all over the terrain. When this area was volcanically active, lava flows, cones and domes all worked in concert to shape the landscape that can be seen today. The main draw to the area is nearby Capulin Volcano in New Mexico, which spewed forth the lava flow that created Black Mesa. Igneous rocks, the type associated with all volcanism, are much more durable and erosion-resistant than the sedimentary rocks that they overlay; thus, the borders of the lava flow form a sort of cap that prevents the rock beneath them from being eroded as quickly as the rock immediately next to the flow's boundary. This type of process is what formed Black Mesa, OK, as well as many of the features in northeast New Mexico. Black Mesa's true summit does not lie in Oklahoma, as the slope gradually in elevation across New Mexico and Colorado. The USGS lists the highest point in Colorado at an elevation of 5,715', however, this point flows directly up to the Mesa de Maya also in Colorado" See summitpost.org/black-mesa/151933

Get the real story from somebody who is not trying to sell you a trip. Capt. Linus Wilson has climbed several 14ers and Pico de Orizaba and he tells you what really matters. A slow ascent is the most important factor in Kilimanjaro success. Acclimatization and avoiding Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) will make or break your climb. The best route for success is the Northern Circuit Route that camps 9 days at altitude.
The 7 most popular routes are "1. Northern Circuit Route 2. Lemosho Route 3. Shira Route 4. Machame Route (“Whiskey” Route) 5. Rongai Route 6. Marangu Route (“Coca-Cola” Route) 7. Umbwe Route" according to climbing-kilimanjaro.com/kilimanjaro-routes
The best month to go is July because it has the least rainfall.

Power Banks, How Much Do U Need, Plane & Cold TipsSlow Boat Sailing2023-03-11 | We test how much power you need for six days or more backpacking, hiking, trekking or climbing to keep your essential electronics like your phone and GPS charged. Is solar better thank power banks? We also talk about travel restrictions on planes for lithium batteries and how many and how big of power banks you can use under FAA regulations. You need to put all lithium batteries in carry-on bags and need special permission from the airline if any power bank exceeds 27,000 mAh. I estimated that I needed 9,000 mAh per day and the solar averages about 2,000 mAh if its out in the middle of the day. If you keep your phone off during most of your backpacking trip you might be able to get by with just one power bank of 10,000 mAh for a multi-day trip. Freezing weather can wipe out the lithium batteries in the power packs and your phone. Take steps to keep them warm in cold weather conditions.

Copyright Linus Wilson, Oxriver Publishing, Vermilion Advisory Services, LLC, 2023The Seven (NINE) Summits Ranking By Difficulty & Cost, Highest Mountains on 7 (6 or 8) ContinentsSlow Boat Sailing2023-02-02 | There are seven continents, but nine highest peaks on them, depending on your definition of a continent. Is Australia a continent or is it part of Oceana or Australasia? What the heck is Australasia and Oceana? What are the boundaries of Asia? Are the Caucus Mountains in Europe? These are all questions without clearly correct answers.
These are rough estimates and prices may vary. Remember success rates are less than 50% for most summits and if you have a guided trip with no flexibility its schedule your chances of summitting are less than averages for the mountain. Thus, a typical seven summits campaign will pay the guided price twice on average. If the guided price is $150,000, expect to pay $300,000 because of weather, mountain conditions, sickness, injury, fatigue, logistics issues that prevent summit success. Costs don't include airfare to the nearest cities of the mountains or the cost of personal gear.

Copyright Linus Wilson, Oxriver Publishing, Vermilion Advisory Services, LLC, 2023Guided Trips PROBABLY Wont Get YOU to the Summit of Big Mountains, Aconcaugua, Pico de OrizabaSlow Boat Sailing2023-01-25 | Guided mountaineering trips by big companies have fundamental flaws that make it less likely their clients will get to the top of the mountain. You can increase your summit success by running your own expedition and using logistics, porters, mules, and even guides as needed or desired. The big flaw with guided trips is their schedule is inconsistent with weather and the physical capabilities of their clients. It is impossible to predict how the weather will be more than two weeks out. It is also impossible to predict your body's reaction to the pacing and the altitude. Guided trips are at best run to satisfy the median climber in the group. At worst they are run to suit the lead guide or the guiding company without regard to clients needs. Either way, the guided trips won't refund your money regardless of how the trip goes, if you get altitude sickness or you cannot try at the summit due to bad weather. The potential clients need to adopt a flexible mindset in terms of time and take a more proactive attitude about managing risk in mountain expeditions than being a passive tourist if they want to improve summit success rates.

Copyright Linus Wilson, Oxriver Publishing, Vermilion Advisory Services, LLC, 2023HAPE on the Summit of Pico de Orizaba 18,491 feet, the Highest Mountain in Mexico, AMSSlow Boat Sailing2023-01-09 | In this video I tell you why I got High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) on summiting Pico de Orizaba, 5610 meters high, and why I did not recognize the symptoms until I descended the Jamapa Glacier on the normal route from the Piedra Grande hut. I only had the standard symptoms of cough and wheeze on the descent. The rarer symptom of face swelling was visible on the summit and possibly in the dark before dawn. I was tired on the last 2,000 feet of elevation gain, but that is not terribly surprising. We were making better time from our 11:45 PM start than I hoped for. Insufficient time for acclimatization, excessive salt (from frozen water), and excessive exertion while roped up on the Jamapa Glacier were risk factors. I had climbed La Malinche 14,640' three days prior to summitting Pico De Orizaba the tallest mounting in Mexico and the 3rd tallest mountain in North America without Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) symptoms. I recovered completely by descending to Piedra Grande 14,000 feet and driving my high-clearance 4 by 4 back to the town of Tlachichuca. I never sought medical attention, and I took no drugs. The best medicine is descending from high altitude and made a full recovery in which the mild wheeze, face swelling, and the occasional cough disappeared.

Copyright Linus Wilson, Oxriver Publishing, Vermilion Advisory Services, LLC, 2022DONT SAIL to SYDNEY! If you are sailing around the world...Slow Boat Sailing2022-07-27 | Captain Linus Wilson tells you why sailing into Sydney Australia is a mistake for Pacific crossers and circumnavigators. Sailing to Sydney is often the end of a round the world sailing trip.
Adverse winds to Sydney and the tremendous detour that it is to call in Sydney means foreign boats with three month visa cannot reach the Torres Straight before their visa runs out. Over half the sailing yachts that call in Tahiti don't reach Australia. Over half the boats that reach Australia do not call in any common Indian Ocean ports such as Mauritius, Reunion, or Cape Town, South Africa. Indeed, probably most Pacific Puddle Jump boats calling in Sydney sell their yachts in Australia.

The fact that the tennis star got a visa with restrictions such as being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 means he has gotten star treatment. Too bad for the 20 time grand slam winner that he did not meet the conditions of the visa by having a recent confirmed case of COVID-19 or being fully vaccinated. We cannot sail to Australia because no Americans (and no Serbians) regardless of vaccination status can enter Australia without a special visa. Australians who are fully vaccinated can enter the USA no problem.

One man was tired of stay at home orders and government regulation of every aspect of life during the COVID-19 pandemic. He bought a small RV, a teardrop travel trailer, and started exploring the American West. This is the story of his travels in search of freedom and adventure on the open road with his dog Avery.
Linus Wilson takes the reader to the American West and Southwest including Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, California, Utah, and Colorado. He hikes to the top of Half-Dome, El Capitan, and the 14er Quandary Peak. He visits the North and South Rims of the Grand Canyon, The Petrified Forest, Death Valley, Yosemite, Sequoia and King's Canyon, Arches, Canyonlands Islands in the Sky, and Bryce Canyon National Parks. He gets lost hiking Peekaboo Canyon and Spooky Gulch in the Grand Escalante National Monument. He was attacked by bees and longhorn sheep in the 120F degree Valley of Fire State Park outside Las Vegas.
He gives his tips and tricks on managing and backing a small travel trailer. Linus and his wife bought a NuCamp T@B (Tab) 320s 15-foot travel trailer as their first RV. He gives readers the secrets of boondocking on Bureau of Land Management sites and at Cracker Barrel. He also writes about the free or discounted RV overnight stay programs Passport America and Harvest Hosts.
A bonus chapter is written by the award-winning fiction author Sophie Violette Wilson.

Sailing around the world.Slow Boat Sailing2021-12-23 | Having a boat in the South Pacific is the worst place to be during the COVID-19 pandemic. Border closures, visa scams, hotel quarantines, have been what the Pacific Puddle Jump has become. We have had our sailboat stranded 700 miles from Australia for over two years. Australia is the worst country in the South Pacific. Australians have given up their freedoms for a COVID zero policy that is impossible to achieve when safe and effective vaccines and treatments make the totalitarian border closers, contact tracing, and quarantines obsolete. Corruption is creeping into Australian government with hotel monopoly's and visa agents who sell access.

With no previous sailing experience necessary, it’s a record-breaking 40,000 nautical mile race around the world on a 70-foot ocean racing yacht.
The brainchild of Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the first person to sail solo non-stop around the world, the event is now in its twelfth edition, the Clipper 2019-20 Race.
Divided into eight legs and between 13 and 16 individual races, you can choose to complete the full circumnavigation or select individual legs. It is the only race in the world where the organisers supply a fleet of eleven identical racing yachts, each with a fully qualified skipper and first mate to safely guide the crew."
