What do you see?

You don't have to always pull an ENTIRE print - grunge up little bits too! SO much you can do.

Start doing the things you love #shorts

Ingrid Blackburn 2022-07-20 | One of the problems I run into when I sit down in my art studio, is overwhelm. Supplies, environment, feelings, life. It ends up paralyzing me, and before I know it, I’m not creating, I’m avoiding.

I started and stopped this page so many times. But, I wanted to play, have fun, so this time, instead of letting it keep me from creating, I decided to turn the page, do the simplest of things - journal. Then I started a few more. I took the pressure off from having to finish. Then I came back, and added to it, in bits and pieces.

The cool thing is, if you don’t like where it ends up, throw some gesso over it and start over. This isn’t class, there’s no bell ringing that time’s up. That’s the beautiful thing, only you get to decide when you’re done.

I believe that sometimes you just have to take the work out of artwork, so that you can just enjoy the art. The point was to have fun with it, do the things you love.

All you got to do to get there, is start.

Mixed media art is a feeling. Don't deprive yourself of sitting down and enjoying these moments. Just start.

PAPER SCRAPS FIX makes the difference #shorts

Ingrid Blackburn 2022-04-29 | We all have paper scraps, but have you ever thought to use your TEENY TINY scraps in this way to fix a project? A simple fix makes all the difference when you forget this simple rule!

Starburst cards are the COOLEST way to use larger scraps. Especially Gelli Print scraps. BUT, be sure to remember how to make them pop, OR...use something I'm SURE you throw away...lol!

Mixed media artist does the unexpected 😮🎨 #shorts

Ingrid Blackburn 2022-04-14 | Art is a feeling. Texture is built up over time. Layer after layer, all in all...there were 17 pulls to this gel print that added texture and depth to create this landscape. The memory of golden wheat fields under a crisp blue sky in Tuscany, captured on a gelli plate. Art...it's a feeling.

I first bought three colors 7 years ago. I never used them. Honestly, I didn't know how to, and was a bit intimidated. I would watch all these cool videos from friends on them, and say oh that looks so cool, but something held me back.

I added more to my collection over the years, I even bought a fancy tin to store them in...but they still collected dust!

I have LIMITED TIME to make Christmas Cards

Ingrid Blackburn 2021-11-27 | Life gets crazy, fitting DIY Christmas cards in can sometimes be a challenge. The past few years have been hard for me in getting my usual stack of 100+ DIY Christmas cards out, and I've ended up only making a few to give to direct family members, leaving me disappointed that I just couldn't fit this into my busy life.

This year I have a new job, and once again am struggling to find the time to fit this fun and let's be honest costly tradition that I love in again. So, I was again going to pass on making Christmas Cards...until my friend Lisa said she was going to start cutting people from her list.

But, seeing her say that on a poll right on this channel, really bothered me, even though I know it's fine. It got me thinking, if Lisa was ready to cut others out, it made me think about how others do this too. And all of a sudden this great tradition of walking to the mailbox, seeing happy mail, knowing someone you love is thinking of you this holiday season, is dwindling, and getting lost!

I talked about this very thing in a recent video (linked below), and why it affected me SO much, but it did reminded me that I don't send cards to get cards. I've been missing out on the joy of knowing that I'm connecting with those that I love over the holidays. And that is just a non-negotiable for me.

So I challenged the community to join me in making a stack (even if it's a short stack) to actually get filled out and mailed this year. Here's how my cram packed week went...

Vintage INK REFILL TECHNIQUE in minutes (SIMPLE)

Ingrid Blackburn 2021-11-19 | Creating vintage pieces to use in your art can be done quickly using things you might even have in the house already. One being Ink Refills, another Tea Bags. Tea drinker not required...

Tea Bags offer a stronger surface to add distressed writing and some staining to. I've seen artists like Laly Mille and Keren Tamir use tea and tea bags before, but I don't drink tea, and I love the stained worn look. Walking through the worn leaves in my yard got me thinking, how can I get that worn feel on vintage papers that I love, without having to have that perfect piece on hand always? When I saw the spots on the leaves - that's when it hit me - ink refills!

So I used some empty bags (supplies linked below) and ink refills to get that tea stained look with this fun little technique. You'll find this is quick, easy and great to create a quick piece to add to your mixed media project or card in just a few minutes. LOVE THAT!

Since I don't drink tea, unbleached tea filter bags were the perfect solution for me (linked below for ease)! PLUS I get to use my ink refills in another way.

If using ink refills to dye your tea bags, and then adding water to your project... Be sure to seal using some gel medium. Quickly add to your gelli plate, brayer out, and press your tea bag on, both sides - and it's set. Easy Peasy.

Easy Gelli Print DIY COASTERS! What to avoid

Ingrid Blackburn 2021-11-06 | We keep so many backgrounds, gel prints, and paper scraps! Why not turn them into something practical? I made DIY coasters with leftover Gelli Prints made with acrylic paint, stencils and my gelli plate. The PROBLEM with sealing these coasters, is that in all my research, I discovered the best product recommended - BUT...once I used it, they smell, seriously, they literally stink!

I refrained from using resin, cause it's expensive, and I didn't want to deal with all those pesky bubbles. SO, I ended up trying 4 different ways to seal these coasters, because the last thing you want is to ruin the art, right? Then what's the point! Here's what happened...

Seeing MAGIC in a project that was probably TRASH

Ingrid Blackburn 2021-01-19 | THIS is what happens when you let go of perfection. Do you ever clean all that left over paint on your Gel Plate? I'm gonna show you a reason to not do that! And more importantly, how when it's headed for the trash, maybe take a second look. Ask yourself if I just breathe, and let go - can I save it?

Failing is part of the process sometimes. And in that process, you can unlock magic. This is the story of the simple gel print, the one that wasn't even supposed to be anything helped me to break through the worst creative block in my 25 year art career
