Partial transcript
On September 22nd, 2008, Capcom brought its original superstar back from the dead. Well, maybe not the absolute first character in their stable, but the oldest one that had the most impact on the company: Mega Man! Known in Japan as Rockman.
20 years after hitting the scene, the Blue Bomber was back with all new adventure. OK. More like 21 years. After all, Rockman was first released in Japan on December 17th, 1987. We all know the history from there so there’s no need to go too deep into detail, but if somebody were happily playing Mega Man 1 on a warm Summer’s night back in 1988, and suddenly went into a coma until 2008, and saw the ninth… NINTH!! Mega Man game, which looks exactly like the first one, he or she might be asking just what the heck happened!?
I would tell that 21st Century Rip van Winkle this: Mega Man was a huge game series back in the 8 bit days. It was so popular that there were 6 games in 6 years! The games had some improvements, like the Mega Buster, and helpers like Rush, Beat and Eddie, but the core game, The struggle of Dr. Light versus Dr. Wily and most notably the graphics never changed! Partly because to keep up with the demanding pace of putting out annual installments, there wasn’t any time to make those changes, and things worked so well, maybe they didn’t need much changing after all.
Footage provided by offical game trailers, or website sources. Some gomeplay assistance by Pietro soft. Music taken straight from the Rockman 9 CD soundtrack from the E-Can Sound Collection.

The key point to everything in this story is the word “Yakyuuken.” Literally, “Baseball Fist” but that doesn’t really explain anything, does it?
Then Ken in Yakyuuken comes from the word Janken, known to most of the world as Rock, Paper Scissors. A simple and fun game of chance played by all ages! Fist, refers to the clenched hand made before throwing out your call. I have no idea when the game started but it’s safe to say it was centuries before Alex Kidd!
The Baseball part goes back to October 1924. In Matsuyama Japan, a local baseball team was losing the game so badly that the team manager, Goken Maeda, started singing, dancing and cheering to lift the spirits of his team. The songs were similar to chants used while playing Janken.
The rally cry didn’t work, but the routine became a part of every game. Eventually other teams started chanting too and before you knew it, this newly coined portmanteau of Baseball and Janken, entered the lexicon!
In the following decades, singers released records of Yakyuuken chants, often with lyrics and step by step dance instructions included.
It took about 50 years for the term to cross over into something a little more salacious!
In 1969 a variety program, “Konto GO GO GO!!”, literally meaning, “Sketch Show Number 55,” ran short bit with women playing Janken. The loser of each round had to take off one piece of clothing!
It seemed only natural that after the invention of the video game, someone had to make a game based on Yakyuuken. Its almost like there was a rule that such if a thing can be made, it must be made.
The earliest known version was developed by Hudson Soft for the Sharp MZ computer series. Very little has been preserved about this game, but it records show that this game was on sale as early as 1979! And as such, has the distinction of being the first adult video game ever! Pre-dating Streaking and Custer’s Revenge! As well as Night Life, by Koei, which is often listed as the first adult video game in Japan.
Funny how Hudson Soft doesn’t tout this claim to fame….

I really enjoyed laying down the songs for this video. there are several pieces of music in this video.
1-The Mario Paint "Thinking Music" was made courtesy of Qumu! Listen to it here youtube.com/watch?v=MewAgvsMDp8
2- The Soy-strich® talk bed was "Ultra Yak" from Tempest 2000. The visuals were taken from the time travel sequence in the film "Tim After Time" (1979) and since it looked like something out of Tempest 2000, I thought it was a nice fit!
3- The World War II Music was the official BBC Newsreel music known as "Imperial Echoes."
4- The song to Sign Wa V is "Sign Wa V!" Its actuallt the these to the second series, which came out in 1973, but the spelling of victory was much clearer. Both songs have the same lyrics, so eh, its a bit of a cheat but whatever.
5- Janet Lynn's music was from Edvard Grieg's Lyric Suite (from op. 54 Notturno). Ironically the music comes from Lyric Pieces Book V, but I think that's just a Roman Numeral five. The song was one of three that played during her 1927 performance.
6- The Konica Camera music was "Yesterday, Today , Tomorrow" by: Jun Inoue, who appeared in the ads! I thought the title was a nice touch because the whole story talks about how this sign changed over time. How it was for victory in the past, changed in the 70s, and means peace today. That is unless you think I'm wrong and it's not a peace sign!
7- While I didn't play it, the line "you're all wrong and all the kids are right" comes from the Local H song "All the Kids Are Right" from the album "Pack Up the Cats" released in 1998, and was the greatest album of that year, despite Superdrag's Head Trip in Every Key also being released that same year which is the greatest album of all time. Also don't confuse this with "The Kids Are Alright" by The Who, which is a good song, but is painfully overused by everyone it seems.

On January 14th, 1941 Victor de Laveleye, a member of the Belgian Government in Exile, gave a Belgian-French speech on the BBC, whose airwaves would reach to the European Continent. In that broadcast he urged all Belgians to use the letter V as a rallying cry during wartime. V meaning “Victorie” in French and also “Vrijheid.” Freedom” in Dutch. (Belgian is not a language.)
The use of the letter V spread and reached worldwide visibility when the wartime British Prime Minister, one of the greatest of all time, Winston Churchill made the V-sign gesture in a public address. As World War II raged on, with the USA entering the fray after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the V Sign became a global symbol of Victory! The V was even co-opted by the Germans, something historians won’t tell you!
In 1972, Sapporo, Japan hosted the Winter Olympics. In the Women’s Figure Skating event, one athlete captured the hearts of the nation. Janet Lynn. Her performance was far from perfect, with several mistakes made during her routine, including falling over. With each mistake, she maintained a smile and persevered. Janet Lynn earned the Bronze Medal, as well as fame. Throughout 1972 and 73, she toured Japan, and often showed the V Sign in public. At the end of her tour, she returned Sapporo and was surprised to find the Olympic Village still standing. There she left a message, singing it with “Peace, Love and Life In Jesus Christ.”
After that, there was no doubt. In Japan, the V for Victory was now known for Peace.
During her 1972 tour, Japanese camera manufacturer, Konica, seized an opportunity, by producing an ad campaign, featuring popular entertainer Jun Inoue, holding a Konica Camera and making a Peace Sign. Further cementing the idea that the hand gesture that resembles the letter V is best done when taking a photograph.

In 1988, as Sonic Soldier Borgman, reached in conclusion, Sega, Fuji and Studio Pierrot reached an agreement to create an all-new Anime series. Similar to the other two Media Mixes, Sega would have some creative input over the series, and the exclusive rights to produce video games and toys.
In a strange, some might say, ironic turn, the star of this new Media Mix would be awfully familiar looking!
When Sega, Fuji and Pierrot put their heads together to create the star of this new project, the final design came to be a young boy named “Hat” who wore a turban that contained magical powers. Thus giving him - and the series - the name “Magical Hat.” His design looks an awful lot like our dear old friend, Imajin. There is no document that serves as the smoking gun proving a connection, but with Imajin still fresh in people’s minds it made a lot of sense to borrow the idea.
Old fables say that 63,000 years ago, a hero by the name of Magical Hat, banished the demons of the of the Earth to the Demonworld, where they have remained ever since, isolated by a magical seal. In the present day, young Hat and his family visit Uson island. Hat’s father, an archaeologist, plans to research the area near a large volcano on the island, where the legendary Magical Hat was believed to have engaged in battle. For young Hat, its an escape from the city life and a great way to have a summer adventure. While exploring the area, Hat falls in to the volcano, and breaks the seal to the Demonworld.
There, King Aleph rules as a kind and just king, keeping the Demonworld in order. His brother in-law, Guwaru The Ziarc, has plans to seize the throne. When Hat enters the Demonworld, Guwaru and King Aleph are in a struggle for power. Guwaru gets the upper-hand, banishing King Aleph, and breaking up the continent that holds the Demonworld into 7 separate islands.
Returning to a previous tangent, Guwaru The Ziarc bears a strong resemblance to Mamu, the bad guy from Doki Doki Panic. It’s as if Sega was taunting Nintendo with what they could get away with. Or maybe it’s all just a crazy coincidence…
Not long after entering the Demonworld, and meeting Guwaru, Hat discovers a statue which possesses the spirit of the Hero of Legend! Hat is told that he is a direct descendant of Magical Hat and that he shall realize his destiny as the second incarnation of the Hero, to stop Guwaru, reunify the continent and restore King Aleph to the throne!
Thus, Hat becomes transformed into the new Magical Hat and the adventure begins!! The turban that Hat wears contains powerful magic that the wearer can control. Using the magical powers of this turban, he can defeat Guwaru and complete his quest. However, if Guwaru gets a hold of the turban, all hope is lost.

People always call the Family Computer "Famicom," so why does it say Family Computer right on the front of the machine? You could say, “well that’s what it was originally called and later, Nintendo shortened the name, but every Nintendo-made product of the 8-bit line says Family Computer somewhere on the product and not the word “Famicom.”
The Disk System from 1986, The New AV Model from 1993, and the Classic Mini from 2016 ALL SAY FAMILY COMPUTER on the machine! And in documentation. So, where have we seen the word Famicom before? I’ve seen it on the Twin Famicom, but that was made by Sharp! Not Nintendo! A few other things made by Sharp also use the word Famicom. Let’s not forget that this is called the Super Famicom, not Super Family Computer! So what gives? What if I told you that Sharp beat Nintendo to the punch by about 5 years and had their own Famicom first?!

In the Year 200X, Dr. Thomas Light had developed several advanced robots that came very close to appearing human. In those early days, his first creation Blues, was the first robot to be self-aware. The experiment ended when Blues rebelled, leaving Dr. Light’s laboratory, later causing trouble on his own.
His next attempt, Rock and Roll were built with very controlled parameters, restricting their actions to performing household duties, with strict instructions to never harm humans. Other simple robots were designed for tasks that improved the quality of human life as well. One day, an adversary of Dr. Light, Dr. Albert W. Wily, reprogrammed Dr. Light’s robots, in an attempt to conquer the world. The Good Doctor, upgraded his household Robot Rock, into the super fighting robot Mega Man, to defeat Wily and restore peace to the world.
Under the programming directives set by Dr. Light, Mega Man defeated Wily, but never hurt him. Wily would escape and return time and time again, even recruiting Blues, now known as Proto Man, in his plans for world domination.
Dr. Light struggled with his decisions throughout all of this.
In his laboratory, in secret, Dr. Light developed a new robot, more advanced than Mega Man with human like reasoning and a conscience. He named this robot X. Dr. Light felt it was necessary to create such a robot, lest a madman worse than Wily were to appear in the future. Grappling with the moral question of unleashing X upon the world, Dr. Light ran a system of operations to test the will of the robot. A process that would take 30 years, longer than Dr. Light would ever live. To allow the process to complete itself, Dr. Light sealed X underground, with instructions not to disturb the system until the process was complete.
Not long after completing X, Dr. Light passed away. Time moved on and his laboratory became forgotten. 100 years later in the year 21XX, an archeologist, Dr. Cain unearths Dr. Light’s lab, and the robot, X. Even in the 22nd Century, X was more advanced than any robot the world had ever seen. Without fully understanding the work Dr. Light had done, Dr. Cain revived X and applied his design to new robots, called Reploids. These robots had never received the ethical testing that X had undergone. As a result, many of the reploids turned on Dr. Cain. These irregular reploids were soon labeled Mavericks. Their numbers grew and soon the world was engulfed in a maverick rebellion.
To protect humanity, Dr. Cain creates the Maverick Hunters, a large defense force. X is but one of many hunters, working in the 17th division under Zero as the events of the game begin..
X takes on the mission of squashing the Maverick uprising, all of which is lead by Sigma. A reploid who was once a maverick hunter himself!

On May 17, 1978 a new show, simply titled “Spiderman” Debuted on Tele Tokyo, channel 12 on the old analog dial! And let’s just get it out of the way early, its like nothing you’ve ever seen before! Truly a bizarre case of East meets West!
The story is centered on a young man, Takuya Yamashiro, an up an coming professional motorcycle racer. In the first episode, he witnesses a UFO crash to earth. Lucky for him, Takuya’s father is space archeologist… I had no idea there was such a thing. Together the father and son duo investigate the crash. The ship, named “The Marveler” carries the last survivor of the planet Spider, a man named Garia. Planet Spider was destroyed by the evil army of The Iron Cross, a powerful evil force led by Monster, who plans to conquer the entire universe!
Humans do not have the powers needed to defeat The Iron Cross, but Garia passes on his abilities by injecting his blood into Takuya. Now, becoming the “spider man,” Takuya is given the Spider Bracelet, which holds the Spider Suit and produces an infinite amount of Spider String. Garia, also passes on The Marveler spaceship. Stored inside, is the Spider GP-7, a flying vehicle. The Marveler also transforms in to the Leopardon, a giant fighting robot!
After instructing Takuya to save humanity and the entire universe from Monster, Garia, the final survivor of the planet Spider dies! While all of that would be a lot for anyone take in, Takuya’s father, is killed by Monster while investigating the crash site! The dichotomy of having the weight of the world on your shoulders, unbeknownst to all, while also seeking vengeance against your father is a great setup for the series as well as motivation for Takuya, aka Spiderman.
With his father now gone, Takuya assumes the head of the household, caring for his sister, Shinko and brother Takuji. Takuya also has a girlfriend, Hitomi, who works as a newspaper photographer, though she aspires to be a proper journalist. She is a pivotal character in the series, as her work allows news of the battle between Spiderman and The Iron Cross to reach the public.
Takuya keeps his identity a secret. Even his brother and sister don’t know the truth, setting up some funny situations where Takuya gets admonished for not being a brave man like Spiderman is!

After years of service, Mario and Luigi were notified that the Mushroom Kingdom would officially recognize their heroics by commissioning a solid Gold Statue of their likenesses! Christened by Princess Peach herself!
What a great surprise! Though somehow, the telegram came late! The unveiling is today! The brothers get dressed and head on over to the ceremony. Fashionably late, Peach scolds the two before handing over scissors to free the tarp, unveiling the statue. With a snip the covering falls away. What? A pile of rocks!? Where’s the statue! It’s being stolen!
Who is behind this? The thieves load the Golden Statue onto a big ship and set sail! As Mario, Luigi and Peach watch the ship sail over the horizon, the thieves announce that they are known as the Brown Sugar Pirates, who love to steal valuable things!
Our heroes are left wondering, who will we get the statue back? Just then an unlikely friend appears, Wario! With his own boat, that he offers to lend out, in order to rescue the Golden Statue.

Back in 1983, Nintendo created one of their longest running characters: Luigi! A few others were created around that time but have faded away. Stanley? Mr. Stevenson? Gone! You could argue that, other than his brother Mario and Donkey Kong Jr., there is no other playable character that is still around after 40 years, at least in the Nintendo Universe.
Speaking of Donkey Kong Jr., this is where I always thought that Luigi got his start. No, its not official, not canon, but there are 2 Marios that haul away Donkey Kong at the beginning of the arcade version of Donkey Kong Jr. Who is this supposed to be? Luigi? Which of these two Marios is the real one? I guess the idea of having a second Mario is what sparked the creation of Luigi.
Not long after donkey Kong Jr., Luigi first appeared with his brother Mario in Mario Bros., a Game & Watch first released on March 14th, 1983. Here, Mario and Luigi work at a bottling plant, loading orders onto delivery trucks. Luigi, as well as Mario don’t look anything like you’d expect. Just simple black outlines, like Mr. Game & Watch. However one illustration of the brothers was printed on the box. With Mario in his standard red, and Luigi in green! They don’t look too far off from the version of Mario Bros. We all remember better, first released in arcades in the summer of 1983.
It was here that the brothers’ career track was set in stone. For always and ever afterwards, Mario and Luigi were plumbers. I guess carpentry was too competitive.
Mario Bros. came home to the Family Computer in September 1983. The TV Game version is a decent rendition and considering it was a fairly new arcade game, pretty amazing!
At the start of 2013, Nintendo had a lot to look forward to. The Wii U debuted just a few months beforehand. With the Wii U Gamepad, it was possible to replicate the experience of the DS at home on your TV! The machine also used the same classic Wii Rimokon, and had Wii backwards compatibility, while new Wii U games played in high-vision! The marquee game was New Super Mario Bros. U, released on day one, which varied depending on your region. For Japan, that date was December 8th, 2012.
In February 2013, Nintendo declared 2013 to be “The Year of Luigi.” Where Mario’s brother would lead the way, all year long! Nintendo placed Luigi center stage, replacing Mario in all branding and promotion, in addition to releasing several games for the Wii U and 3DS that had the Green Guy as the star!
Club Nintendo’s traditional red coloring scheme would change to green. The offerings would be Luigi focused, such as a CD soundtrack of Luigi music in Japan, pins, bag and posters elsewhere in the world.
Luigi would make public appearances around the world. The whole year was planned out in stages, month by month with promotion and release, of Luigi games and events. It gave a feeling of excitement and that you might just kick yourself if you missed out on it by not paying attention.

Have you ever played Street Fighter II, Megaman, or Final Fantasy? All these games have the characters doing weird little movements in the game. And it's not just these, there’re a lot of games old and new that are full of these strange little actions.
When you play video games for most of your life, you tend to notice things. You start to see patterns, things kind of imitate each other, or look the same. It's not quite copying, more like emanating from the same origin point.
All these games reference one singular point in time. An event that happened on April 11th, 1974. That was the day, this action, called the Guts Pose was invented. If you think I'm crazy, just sit back and let me explain the whole thing.
The term “Guts Pose” is attributed to a professional boxer named Yuji Suzuki, known in-ring as Guts Ishimatsu, earning the moniker from being such a gutsy fighter. The term “guts,” referencing ability or fortitude was not well known in Japan at the time.
The earliest use of the term is found a publication known as Weekly Guts Bowling, which was in print around the time that Yuji Suzuki took the name Guts Ishimatsu. Did he steal his name from this magazine? He's never admitted it. One issue, dated November 30th, 1972 highlights different stances bowlers would take after scoring a strike. The term Guts Pose was used to describe it. Beyond the small circulation this magazine had, the term was unheard of. However, Guts Ishimatsu and his in ring style was becoming well known around the world.
Overall, his career win loss record wasn't so great. By 1974 he stood at 26 wins with 14 by KO, 11 losses and 6 draws. Despite the less than perfect record, Guts was able to secure a title match for the WBC Lightweight championship against then champion Rodalfo Gato Gonzales, the heavy favorite who had over 50 wins on his record. In the 8th round Guts was able to knock out Gonzales and take the title. The win was such an upset, that Guts, his crew and his family started celebrating as fans stormed the ring! In this middle of all the excitement, Guts, made a strange motion with his hands to celebrate the victory. In his post fight interview, he said that the movement in his right hand shows his own joy of winning a fight, while the left hand shows his gratitude to the audience. A newspaper photographer captured the action, affixing the name “Guts Pose” to the caption.
This boxing match, held in Japan, and won in a dramatic fashion by a Japanese fighter, made headlines across the nation. Guts Ishimatsu become somewhat of a national hero, while the term “Guts Pose” became a household word.

On March 23rd, 1993, Hoshi no Kirby: Yume no Izumi no Monogatari, was released for the Nintendo Family Computer in Japan. A few months later the game went abroad as Kirby’s Adventure. Nearly three years after the Super Famicom had been released, many were surprised that such an impressive game could be made on such an old piece of hardware, and that anyone would bother doing such a thing at all, rather than going the 16-bit route.
At the end of 1990, with the 16-Bit Era in full swing, it seemed like the days of the Family Computer were numbered. Though the FC hung in there, doing so defied the odds, as Nintendo never expected the machine to make it to 3 years, let alone 10.
In 1990, Japanese game publisher, HAL Laboratory recruited a young graduate named Masahiro Sakurai. Having never created a video game before, he played around with the tools HAL had provided, including a makeshift toolkit built from a Family Computer and Disk System. Masahiro eventually created a peculiar game starring a floaty puffball, who could inhale enemies and use them as projectiles. He could also fly by inhaling the air around him. This offered a challenge, as while in flight, the character’s method of attack drops you to the ground. The choice of fight or flight offered a unique spin on the standard run and jump type of game common in those days.
Sakurai named this character Popopo, which sounds like the flutter noise he makes when flying. Popopo was initially designed as a simple placeholder character until something more sophisticated would replace him. Over time, Sakurai and the team at HAL grew to like the design. Popopo became permanent.
The game, titled Twinkle Popo was previewed and advertised across Japan, in early 1992. The response was disheartening as only 26,000 cartridges were pre-ordered from stores. Far less than what was required to break even.
HAL Laboratory reached out to Nintendo to publish the game, which led to Popopo being renamed to Kirby. Twinkle Popo was retitled to “Hoshi no Kirby” meaning in English, Kirby of the stars. Nintendo released the game on April 27th, 1992, backed with all of the resources Nintendo had at its disposal.
While the initial reception of Twinkle Popo was quite cold, Hoshi no Kirby became the #1 best game in Japan in May 1992, By the end of the year, the game had sold over one million copies in Japan, while also being released elsewhere in the world as Kirby’s Dream Land. Lifetime sales would exceed five million.
Kirby’s rocket ride to the top prompted immediate talk of expanding the Dream Land into a long running, proper series. With backing from Nintendo, not only was that possible, but now, for Sakurai and HAL Laboratory, the sky was the limit!
Some images came from Shmupulations. Some capture assistance courtesy of Raven XP. CMs by Vini64, Dario and Chris Aaron. Some footage courtesy of Masahiro Sakuari and Nintendo Co., Ltd. As for who sang the song on the GameBoy CMs... well, its still a mystery......

Tetris. One of the most popular videos games ever, and perhaps the greatest of all time. A simple set of rules that offer an addictive challenge.
It may be the one game that transcends time and lives forever.
Tetris has been played on computers, mobile phones, and on the TV. In its countless forms, Tetris has made fans all over the world. And one of them, who once had the highest Tetris score in the world … is one of the founders of Apple?
When it comes to Tetris, no formal introduction is needed. Created by Alexey Pajitnov behind the Iron Curtain, in the USSR in 1984, the game passed through to the Free World, through some licensing deals by various companies including SEGA and Atari Games, but eventually the rights went to Nintendo, who brought the game to the masses by releasing versions for the Nintendo Entertainment System and GameBoy in 1989 With a few sequels and variants following in years after.
Today the game is owned by the Tetris Company which means I guess Tetris became self aware and then emancipated itself...
Most younger gamers, those who didn’t have access to computers, first learned of the game in Nintendo Power: The in-house publicity arm of Nintendo of America. Part of Nintendo’s strategy was to bundle Tetris with the GameBoy upon release. making it an instant killer app as millions of people, including a large number of adults, ran out to get a GameBoy simply to get a quick fix of Tetris.

Beginning on November 29th, 2022, Japanese snack maker, Glico teamed up with Capcom to release Street Fighter II Pocky K.O. Edition! A special limited edition of the stuff went on sale with special Street Fighter II packaging, featuring Ryu and Chun-Li on the box! As an aside the Chun-Li boxes feature the “thin” version of Pocky, because, a right and proper woman has to watch her figure!
Street Fighter II Pocky K.O. Edition was created to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the entire Street Fighter series and takes its inspiration from the limited time “Pocky Challenge” from 2019 found in Street Fighter V. Wait V? What happened to Street Fighter IV? Or III? I only remember re-re-re-re-releases of Street Fighter II over and over again!
The Back of the box tells you all you need to know. Scan the QR code or just type in pocky-ko-game.glico.com and you’ll go right the game! You will need a secret password to gain access, which is featured on the inside of the box.
You should probably go track down a box of Street Fighter II Pocky for yourself to get the code. Because after all, you want to support Capcom, and not just get a free ride, right?
I’ll share the password, but just keep it between us, OK?

This video was remastered along with others to improve the quality of these older videos with better equipment and knowhow that I have at my disposal that i did not have back then. The original video was very simply recorded on an iPhone and I was never happy with the final result. Now it looks more in line with what more modern GTV videos look like, while still retaining that 2016, "unknown nobody with 29 subscribers" charm.

Meet Bonoron, The Forest Warrior, the star of a small bi-monthly children’s manga book in Japan. On the 15th day of every even numbered month, you can pick up a new at 7-11, for free! And they even include a 7-11 in each issue as well! In the world of Bonoron, the gentle giant lives in the forest under a giant mulberry tree, coming to the rescue of humans of nearby kingdoms whenever trouble occurs. It’s good for children, but also pretty useful for adults who are studying Japanese. The stories are written with furigana, and are simple, but still interesting and have a lot of fantasy and medieval elements. In The February / March 2016 issue, A Country Without Singing, the king’s daughter, who had a beautiful singing voice, became sick and died young. In his grief, the king outlawed all music throughout the kingdom. A village girl still wishes to sing and Bonoron helps her by carrying her voice on the wind, which the king hears, leading to a change of heart. After hearing the girl’s singing, music is allowed in the kingdom once more. It’s a nice story, but there’s one panel in the book that made me pause and take notice…. look familiar????

Five years ago I made a video covering the Phantasy Star Series, as the original entry passed the 30 year mark. It was a fun, interesting retrospective that covered everything! I followed things up with deep dives on Phantasy Star II and III later on. Someday I’ll cover Phantasy Star IV, don’t worry. 2017 wasn’t the end of Phantasy Star, as the story still continues to this day! New releases have hit the stores! Unknowns, both known and unknown were discovered. Then it hit me that the Original Phantasy Star needs its own dedicated video! So let’s do just that, and celebrate the start of this great series! Hold on to your Laerma Nuts, because Phantasy Star One is 35!!!!
Its hard to believe that we’re moving through the third decade of life during and after the 8-Bit Era. 1987 seems so long ago when you look at the calendar. But thinking about those days gone by, it feels like only yesterday. The story of how the game Phantasy Star came to be is quite interesting. Truly a moment when the state of the art met a sign of the times.
Back in 1987 Sega Enterprises, in Japan, released the fourth iteration of its 8-bit Hardware, The Master System. The long road began with the SG-1000 in July 1983, released on the same day as the rival Nintendo Family Computer! The next year the exterior was redesigned, becoming the SG-1000 II, the internals were upgraded in 1985, becoming the Mark III. This machine outperformed the Family Computer in many important areas, with more colors and more RAM that could bring many of Sega’s early 80s arcade games home!
Sega still had one more upgrade with the FM Sound Card, which gave games an amazing boost in audio that made the low quality beeps and boops sound like they were coming out of a high-end synthesizer! This accessory could attach to the Mark III and was built in to the next upgrade, codenamed Mark IV and known to the public as the Master System! Named so because Sega intended this to be the highest, ultimate, final iteration of 8-Bit technology!

Final Fantasy V is an unusual game, for many reasons. A game of many quirks that only a special kind of RPG fan can truly appreciate. Perhaps it was destined to be so, as Final Fantasy V began life in a unorthodox way. The game began development before final Fantasy IV and was even advertised before the game it was intended to follow! Perhaps behind the scenes, many of the characters, and scenarios exist in some sort of ether, that later gets arranged and properly numbered. Maybe it’s better that stays a mystery. However, it is a fact that Final Fantasy V was first advertised not long after the release Final Fantasy III. A print ad appeared in the pages of Japanese game magazines in November 1990. “Super Final Fantasy” as it was known, told everyone that this would be SquareSoft’s first entry for the Super Famicom. Set for Summer, 1991. No tangible information was given, leaving the reader’s imagination to dream of what a 16-bit Final Fantasy might be.
Final Fantasy IV, was originally scheduled for the 8-Bit Family Computer, with Famicom Tsuushin Magazine, explaining a scenario of what this game might be, based on the scant information teased at the time. It has never been made clear how far this game made it through the development process, but sometime afterward the game was promoted to the Super Famicom, becoming the classic we all know and love, debuting in July 1991.
The core of the Final Fantasy Series had always been the led by Hironobu Sakaguchi, creator of the series, and director or producer for all of the early games. Yoshitaka Amano, created the designs of characters and monsters. Nobuo Uematsu composed the score for each game. Within each installment, other key staff would vary. For Final Fantasy V, Yoshinori Kitase joined Sakaguchi in writing the scenarios of the game. Kazuko Shibuya created the sprites and graphical elements. Tetsuya Nomura designed the monsters and enemies based on Amano’s artwork.
In the early days of the Final Fantasy series, the number system carried a special meaning. Odd numbers were intended to be games that focused on character customization. Even numbers were meant to be story driven. Looking back at the first six games, its easy to see that I, III and V follow a similar formula, where each playable character can have his or her attributes selected and modified to different extents, all based on what the player decides. Final Fantasy II, IV and VI feature characters that get stronger over time, but have almost no qualities that can be altered. Over time this setup has faded away, but must be remembered when invested in a critique of the early days of the series.
All artwork done by the great Yoshitaka Amano!

In January 1992, the dust had settled from the ’91 Christmas Shopping Season. Millions of game fans across America returned to school or work having made the choice between the Sega Genesis or the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Only one stood as the winner: Beginning in 1992, Sega started a multi year run as the Market Leader of the Video Game Industry in the United States. Just a few years prior, this scenario would have been treated as a piece of laughable fiction.
But Sega took the opportunity to knock Nintendo from its throne. Rather than fight for Nintendo’s share of the proverbial pie, they expanded it and made one of their own. Sega released the Genesis two years before Nintendo’s Super NES. Sega targeted older, more sophisticated game players. Sega recruited celebrities and athletes to give their games relevance to the culture.
Sega openly mocked Nintendo in advertising, while touting the power of the Genesis.
Then in 1991, Sega released Sonic The Hedgehog. The game became the company’s flagship title. The Sonic character became the face of Sega. Sonic was positioned as a faster, cooler alternative to Mario. The Coup de Grace came in July 1991. Sega reduced the price of the Genesis and included Sonic for free with each new unit sold.
The end result was 2.8 million Genesis sets sold in 1991, while the Super NES only sold 2 million.
The sales tally justified Sega’s hard work, while Nintendo was left stunned, relegated to second place status.
1991, was just the first battle of that long drawn out war between Sega and Nintendo.
1992 would be just as competitive as the year before.
Another 1-2 punch was needed, to keep Sega on top and Nintendo on guard. A sequel to Sonic. One bigger, faster and better than the original.

Some games never go out of style, Case in point. Nintendo’s first entries in the Super Mario Bros. series. These games are well past the 30 year mark, and yet people still love them just as much as they did on the day these games came out. As great as this set is, their legacy still stands thanks in part to a clever strategy by Nintendo. It was all done in a way that seems like a foregone conclusion these days, but way back when was unheard of, and actually quite genius.
It’s a tale as old as time. Your favorite video games get old. New ones come out, and those favorites of yesteryear fade away. This generational change has been happening for decades now. Over time, this changing of the tides has solidified into a precise schedule: every 5-6 years for Nintendo, and 8-10 years for everyone else! While it is a standard practice these days, back in the Early 90s, things weren’t as orderly as they are now.
As the 1990s began, Nintendo had 3 product lines! The 8-bit Family Computer, the portable GameBoy and the 16-bit Super Famicom.
Generational shifts had happened before. In Japan, Sega, and Epoch before then, simply axed the older machine, and made a clean break for the next generation. Nintendo did opposite and kept the 8-bit line alive, alongside 16-bit. For while, this worked well, as fans began to migrate. Eventually, hardware sales, software sales, and software titles of the Super Famicom surpassed the older Family Computer. As the Super Famicom came to West as the Super NES, the same pattern followed. The NES was phased out, newer games came much less frequently. The older titles would fall out of print. While newer games were promoted.
During this changeover, new fans were coming along for the ride. A younger generation was coming up and entering gaming at 16-bit level.
That weird generational gap left Nintendo in a pinch! One on hand you had a new set of fans, who may have heard of Mario’s previous adventures, but without the older NES had no means to play them! Then you had all the old-timers who had nothing new to play! And if they wanted to take a trip through the “Groove Yard of Forgotten Hits” you had to dig out that old machine! And deal with old, outdated, 8-bit graphics!
In 1993, Nintendo finally answered everyone’s prayers with a special compilation. Something new and exciting. Something that, at the time, had never been done before. Nintendo took their past Super Mario Bros. games, remastered them for the 16-bit era, and sold them in one package. Super Mario Collection! Known in the West as Super Mario All-Stars.
Now everyone could enjoy all of Mario’s greatest hits, with improved graphics, sound, controls and other niceties that weren’t possible on 8-bit!

This video originally started as three ideas. So you might noticed it looks almost like three videos put together. When I was gathering these topics, I was thinking about the few games that did go eastward. As well, I also found advertising in games quite interesting as I am sure you know if you've been around for a while. Also I thought the origins of Chocobo were amusing. As time went on and I researched more, I realized all three of these points would collide, and as such this video came about.

In the world of classic games there is a direct motion from Japan to the rest of the world, almost like a coastal trade wind. The games always seem to go in one direction: East to West. As you may know, many undergo a transformation along the way. Translation, obviously. Some get a major overhaul.
Hey, here’s something I bet you didn’t know! A Japanese game named Doki Doki Panic, became Super Mario Bros. 2? No, seriously!! That happened! Ok, ok. Well I can’t tell if you're laughing, rolling your eyes or both
Over the many years that GTV has been around, I often get questions, asking if the opposite has ever occurred. If somehow, a non-Japanese game has ever made its way to Japan.
The answer is yes! Though not many. Most, like Tetris or the Ultima games, had the rights negotiated, then a Japanese team built the game from scratch.
But there was at least one game in Japan that received the old switcheroo like our favorite game, Super Mario Bros 2.
Our story begins in 1987. That year a simple, cute game was released for various computers all across Europe. Nebulus. Created by John Phillips for Hewson Associates, the game involves a little green frog named Pogo climbing towers that have been built in his habitat, with the intent of bringing these towers down to restore the balance of nature. Nebulus features a novel and very impressive pseudo 3D rotating effect that built the basis of the game.
Pogo moves left and right, but is really moving in a circle, 360 degrees around the edge of each tower. Pogo can enter doors, which will take him to the other side of the tower, essentially moving through the center. There are objects blocking the way. Some can be taken out with a shot from pogo, while others can’t. If Pogo gets hit, he falls down to the nearest platform underneath, meaning if you land in a safe zone you can keep climbing back up. Only falling in the water costs a life. However there is a running clock, so Pogo must make it to the top before time runs out.
All of this creates an interesting blend of puzzle and action that is frustrating at first, but quickly becomes satisfying after the correct path and actions have been memorized.
When Pogo reaches the top, the tower comes tumbling down! Then it’s off to the next stage, traveling to the next tower via submarine, catching tasty shrimp snacks along the way which increase the timer on the next stage.
For 1987 the 3D effect was amazing. It’s not truly, “real” 3D nor is the tower an actual rotating object. It’s all just an optical illusion. In all, Nebulus was released for the Commodore 64, Amiga, Atari ST, Zed-X Spectrum and a few others across The United Kingdom and the many nations of Europe.

The wonderful sights, sounds, smells and of course, tastes of Japanese barbecue! Imported to Japan from Korea almost 100 years ago, this style of barbecue is much different than that of The West.
Known as “Yakiniku” in Japanese, attention to the flame is a must. Not too rare and not too well done. Each strip of finely cut beef, pork, chicken or seafood takes only a minute or two to cook. An individual’s taste isn’t one size fits all. Each serving is likely to be handled differently. Don’t forget the vegetables! Providing balance and harmony with the meat.
At a large party, or even just a family having a beachside barbecue, making your plate the way you like it, could prove difficult. There is only so much space on the grill. Things move fast, and to keep many busy hands out of the fire, one person is designated as the boss: The Yakiniku Bugyou!
In English, the Barbecue Master! In charge of the grill, serving the guests’ every need diligently!
If you have ever been to a Japanese restaurant like Benihana, you might have seen something like a Yakiniku Bugyou serving customers. However, these setups are solely an American invention, designed to make Japanese food look more exotic and fun, and most likely to keep untrained customers from hurting themselves.
But in the Land of the Rising Sun, the real deal is much different, as each customer gets their own grill and plate of raw food to do with as they like!
One of the most popular Yakiniku restaurant chains in Japan is Gyu-Kaku, meaning Bull-Horn in English.
I can’t really afford to go there, but they do sell some of their specialty sauce at the supermarket, so whenever I can save up the money, I can bring their signature taste home! But if you do ever get a chance to go to one, you’re in for a treat!!!

In the year 1999, four meteorites, referred to as Youma Stones, fell to earth, crashing into Tokyo, Japan. The impact was cataclysmic for the nation. Millions died and society collapsed. In the following years, survivors rebuilt the area, transforming Old Tokyo into Megalo City. In the year 2030 an evil force has appeared, seeking to harness the power of Youma Stones. These fallen meteorites have stood in place since the 1990s, and unbeknownst to nearly all from Megalo City, serve as an inter-dimensional gateway between Earth and the Youma world. Allowing the Youma, a group of mysterious spiritual manifestations, to cross over and conquer the planet.
The original four stones fell as part of failed invasion decades ago. For the gate to open, the stones need to be in the correct position, along with a 5th Youma Stone, that has yet to be revealed.
In the years that followed The Great Collapse, a group of scientists developed cybernetic implants, known as project Borgman. The enhancements work in conjunction with suits of armor that increase the wearer’s power and offer extra protection.
Designed with the intent of protecting humanity from an event like that which happened in the 1990s, the project was kept secret, lest it fell into the wrongs hands.
When the events of 2030 begin to unfold, three volunteers step up to the challenge. Together they comprise The Sonic Team.
The first member is Ryo Hibiki. Born in 2013, he is 16 years old in the setting of the series. He once dreamed of being an astronaut, but that dream was crushed when the Youma appeared. So, he has joined Borgman to enact revenge against the Youma.
Ryo often works in tandem with his motorcycle, Thunder! Powered by AI, Thunder is a sentient being with the ability to transform and upgrade.
The second member, Chuck Swagger is 17 years old, and from the United States. Ryo and Chuck have known each other for a while, training together before the events of the first episode.
The third member, Anise Farm is 16 years old, growing up in the countryside of rural America. Unlike Chuck and Ryo, she had no intention of joining Borgman. Instead, coming to Japan to advancer her music career, only to find herself caught up in the battle with the Youma.
Memory Gene is the leader of Borgman. Slightly older than the three Sonic Soldiers, at age 22, she has a genius level IQ that allows her to develop and maintain the Borgman program at such a young age with ease.
Unlike her teammates, Memory separates personal feelings from the mission. Part of her demeanor stems from losing her younger brother Reminisce, in events that happened prior to the first episode that become resolved later.
The headquarters of Borgman are located in the basement of the Sai-Sonic Academy, where Memory serves as the Principal, while Ryo teaches language, Anise teaches music and Chuck teaches Phys. Ed. There, the Sonic Team develop a close relationship with the children of Megalo City, and many episodes involve them in some way.

Oh yesss, Funasshi! A dear old friend to all! The little pear fairy plucked from obscurity to become the most famous Japanese Tarento of the 2010s (and likely for many, the most annoying too!)
From an outsider’s point of view its quite easy to look at Funasshi from afar, shake your head and say “oh that Crazy Japan, up to its old antics again. And even on The Island, it was quite puzzling why this screaming yellow zonker was so beloved. Coming out of nowhere, seemingly overnight, without much reasoning or explanation involved.
This character, Funasshi! Appeared on the scene way back in the year 2013 and for a good number of years, DAILY! He.. she .. or it was everywhere, on TV nearly 24 hours a day, or at least it felt like it, with additional appearances in CMs, PVs CDs DVDs! (And a bunch of other acronyms)
To understand the lay of the land in 2013, you have to go back to the Turn of the Century, no not the that one, the next one! As Japan entered the “zero-zeros” the nation as a whole started to adopt cute little mascots to represent their respective towns and cities.
Officially these are known as “Yuru-chara” A portmanteau of the words Yurui, meaning relaxing, calm or peaceful, and character. [As an aside I think this is the tenth time I’ve used the word portmanteau in a video (trophy sound!) Nice Get!!]
Yuru-Charas are means to convey some image or feeling about the town it represents, and ends up plastered on every poster, menu, stop sign, tax bill and you name it.

Back in 2016, I discovered the answer to a question that nobody knew. “What Was Yume Kojo?” An event held in Japan in, all the way back in 1987. Most people know of the term “Yume Kojo” but for some reason, no one on Earth can explain any detail of it, whatsoever.
I took things into my own hands, did the proper research and turned that into a video. For thousands, it was a revelation! People from all over the world offered their thanks and shared their thoughts and opinions on this amazing discovery. It was all I ever asked for.
Among all the thanks, There was one thing that many said. And that was… more! Tell us more!!
Despite covering all the bases, there was still a large amount of information left on the cutting room floor.
Also since 2016, people who actually went to Yume Kojo have told me about their experiences and offered personal photos and video of the event, encouraging me to share these memories with the world! Archival sources have turned up other found footage since then as well.
So, let’s do something special! Let’s revisit Yume Kojo! Expand the story, show off new, never before seen footage, and leave no detail behind!
Yume Kojo opened to the public on July 18th, 1987, with locations in Tokyo and Osaka, Japan. The event was held for 44 days that summer, celebrating the limitless possibilities of a future full of progress. Technological demonstrations that were experimental in 1987, but were expected to become mainstream by the 21st Century were seen by million that Summer. To compliment that, there were live concerts, celebrity meet and greets, and all kinds of food. It was an amusement park, music festival and World’s Fair all rolled into one. And, as a peculiar point, the event was organized by a Japanese Media company: Fuji Sankei Group, known today as Fuji Media. Why would a broadcaster do such a grand thing? How was it even possible to orchestrate an event of such a spectacular scale?
It all goes back to a man named Haruo Shikanai, Chairman of Fuji Sankei Group. There were many others involved, but through his leadership, Yume Kojo went from an idea, to reality.

Time to go back to the well, and dig up a well worn, though always beloved, piece of Nintendo History™, The Zapper Light Gun! I’m not going to get too into the woods with the backstory. But it turns out, Light gun technology is actually pretty old, going back to the early 20th Century. Light Gun games were common in arcades, evolving from shooting gallery games that used real firearms. They came home in the 1970s and hung in there for a while, still maintaining their popularity well into the Playstation Era. Motion controlled games often imitate older Light Guns, so the concept really never went away.
For many the Gold Standard was the Nintendo Zapper, included with most editions of the Nintendo Entertainment System, back in the late 1980s.
Of course Sega had the Light Phaser, sharing the same design from the most awesome gun to ever exist, The Zillion. Atari had one too! And it even worked with one 2600 game!! But, since the Status Quo of Video Games, seems to revolve around the influence of the NES, either real or imagined, The Zapper is the de facto standard when it comes to the Light Gun. Of course if you had the original grey gun sold until 1988, you had a lot more Gamer Cred™ than if you had the orange one that came later.
And, oh how fun it was! Hey remember Duck Hunt? I love blasting away at those ducks. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one! It was a great stress reliever, especially if you suffered some frustrating losses in world 6, 7 or 8 in Super Mario Bros. So, it’s a good thing that Duck Hunt was the B-Side to that particular Nintendo Tape™.
Wild Gunman? Fun for sure, but I somehow don’t recall seeing the arcade version at my local 7-11.
Of course what else could you really do with in a Light Gun game besides shoot moving targets? Not much… Nintendo tried something novel with Gumshoe, where each shot made the character jump. It was a strange experiment that didn’t work.
Personally, I felt that Hogan’s Alley was the best game of the original Light Gun Series, my personal favorite and the closest you could get to a realistic simulation of using an actual gun. (So here we go into story time)…
But I always wondered, who was Hogan? The supposed owner of this alley.

Ahh yes, the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers! How could I have gone this long without mentioning them? The truth of it is, that as far as the Nostalgia Spectrum™ is concerned, The Power Rangers just miss the mark for me. I have very few memories of the show growing up. I did see it during the original run, back in 1993, but I was just too old. I can see the appeal for kids who watched it, the story of everyday high schoolers who become superheroes and save the day.
But the funny thing about a lot of TV of this type, the cast and the audience are always meant to be a generation apart. If I was in 4th grade, then these super heroes would be something to look up to. But why would I, as someone in high school, want to aspire to be someone else that was in high school too?
Watching the mishmash of everyday “Saved by the Bell” style teen drama, and fast paced action scenes was just so bewildering and perplexing. Why did the action scenes look they were filmed 100 years ago? Why don’t some voices sync with their mouths? Why is the Yellow Ranger clearly not built like she is when she’s not in uniform?!
But the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers isn’t really what I want to focus on. It’s just the set up, the MacGuffin, if you will. When I moved to Japan, I took an interest in seeing the Super Sentai Series in its original form.
This is of course in the pre-broadband, pre-YouTube days when you couldn’t just whip out the ol’ iPhone and see anything that has ever existed, in its entirety, instantly, for free! or worst case scenario, just forced to watch an ad for 6 seconds.
No, back then, it was a pretty special thing to watch TV from another country IN THAT COUNTRY! I was fortunate enough to blessed with crystal clear reception of a local channel that ran endless Anime, Tokusatsu and Jidai-Geki reruns from the 70s 80s and 90s. For a “curator of Japanese TV” like myself, it was nirvana!!
Eventually I saw most of the old Super Sentai shows, From the original all the way up to Zyu-Ranger. The incarnation that led to the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. They all fit the same formula too. A group of 5 people combine powers to create a fighting force, unified under a symbol, animals, ninjas, mythological heroes, all kinds of stuff. The team is color coordinated, usually red blue yellow, black and pink, but that’s not a hard and fast rule. It’s like they say, “If you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all!”
To get back on track, Jet-O Man was an unusual show for the time. The Super Sentai Series had been around for 15 years. The formula was pretty much laid down. To shake things up some unusual choices were made. If you ever compared Jet-O Man with Zyu-Ranger, which came immediately afterward, you’d be wondering if they were even the same show at all.
The characters are much older, they have jobs! But more than that, they drink, they smoke, they sleep around. There’s actual perma-death of some main characters! Is this still a kids show? More than that, there are a few episodes where the heroes fight the bad guys but as themselves! Not as Jet-O Man! There are episodes where the heroes don’t even suit up and fight! They just talk about their relationship problems, like a soap opera! On top of that some of the bad guys they came up with are really weird!

What you are watching is the sport of Keirin! Literally translated, Keirin means “racing cycle.” Invented in Japan in the early 20th Century, Keirin is a variation of traditional Track Cycle Racing, that tests the ability of cyclists on a 1.5 kilometer course at various speeds behind a motorized pace cycle, which by the final lap leaves the track allowing racers to reach full speed. Prize money is offered to the top racers in each competition. The money is tallied up over the course of a season. That amount determines a racer’s ranking, while the top earner is given the title of “King.” The sport became popularized nationwide in 1948, when the Japanese government legalized gambling racing sports, which also included horse, speedboat and motorcycle racing. Other sport betting is illegal. Casinos and other games are chance are also forbidden.
With the boost in popularity, Keirin developed formalized rules and a proper league in the 1950s. Today the sport pulls in an average of 5 million spectators to live events each year, with 600 billion yen in bets places annually. That’s about $5 Billion US. The sport was not too well known outside of Japan until the Year 2000, when Keirin style cycling was included in the Olympics for the first time, and has been featured in every successive Olympiad.
On November 18, 1994, Koichi Nakano’s Kanshuu Keirin-O was released for the Super Famicom by Coconuts Japan. Kanshuu means supervised by and Keirin-O means simply Keirin King, as each top prize money earner was referred to as “King.” So let’s pop this game into the ol’ Super Famicom and see how it goes!
Well… this is not the kind of game you’d expect. Yes is a Keirin game, a Keirin training simulator! Since no one in 1994 outside of Japan knew or cared about Keirin, I’d place this game ahead of every RPG on the “never to be released outside of Japan” list. The massive wall of Japanese text also earns this game a spot on the “never to be fan translated” list, too.
So what is it all about? The game is ‘Supervised by” Koichi Nakano. As such he “consulted” with the designers about the element of training and of the sport, to ensure its authenticity. You don’t actually get to play as Koichi Nakano, only that you will always be safe in the knowledge that he oversaw all of this. To what degree, is never said.
You create your own character, including name and hometown then start training for upcoming races, then eventually enter those competitions and win money. You start on April 1st, 1994 and begin to train for the upcoming Keirin season. You can choose to hit the gym, work hard to increase your power and stamina, getting your bike up to speed, and then maintaining it. It’s basically a lot of A button mashing. A few activities are automatic and you just watch it!
You can also upgrade your bike, check your upcoming races, or just take a day off! Actions takes up most of your day and after you have trained or visited the doctor, the day is over. One of the frustrating parts of this game is that to get the next day to happen, you must return home, rather than simply returning and waking up the next day automatically!

Time to take a trip back and remember a highly influential Role Playing Game series. Cosmic Fantasy!! Though it is often forgotten along side the long list of other great RPGs out there, Cosmic Fantasy holds a special place in the hearts of many who played it in the early 1990s. The style of game that the series established lives on today, making it an important piece of Gaming History™ that deserves not to be ignored.
Cosmic Fantasy is set in the far off future, almost a century after the most advanced planets of galaxy united in peace to form The Galactic Federation. The peace is maintained by an elite force: the Cosmic Security Company. Agents of the CSC are known as Cosmic Hunters. Their mission is to protect planets who have yet to develop modern technology from space pirates, and other evil forces.
The Star of Cosmic Fantasy is Yuu. Orphaned at a young age, Yuu was taken in by the Director of the CSC and at age 14 is already conducting independent missions. His tanooki-like motorcycle, Monmo and his spaceship A.I. module, Mother, give Yuu the sense of family missing from his life. On a routine flyby, Yuu detects a distress signal emanating from the Planet Norg. Though visiting Norg was not on his agenda, Yuu crash lands on the planet and begins an investigation.
Cosmic Fantasy 2 takes place on planet Idea. There, a young boy named Van lives a simple life in a farming village on Clan Island. One day, Van learns of a plot by an evil wizard named Galum, to kidnap the princess of planet Idea. The identity of the princess kept hidden, for her own safety and can only be realized through a pendant that she wears. It turns out that Van’s childhood sweetheart Lara is actually the princess, and does become kidnapped. Furthermore, The princess has the power to grant immortality to the man she marries, which if Lara were forced to marry Galum would make him unstoppable.
The presence the Cosmic Fantasy series had so far in Japan, grabbed the attention of a small American game publisher, Working Designs. The company operated with the sole mission of localizing the best games left behind in Japan by bigger publishers. Cosmic Fantasy 2 would become the biggest project up to that point that Working Designs had ever taken.
In Cosmic Fantasy 3, a space pirate named Gardo uses a time machine to go back in time, 25 years to stop the creation of the CSC from ever happening, thus allowing the space pirates to plunder uninhibited in the future. Yuu learns of the plot and also goes back in time to prevent history from being altered. In the past Nyan meets Rei, the main character of the game. Nyan explains to Rei that he’s searching for a rare gem, the Sebul-rakis Stone. It just so happens that a family of shady looking cats seeks the stone as well.
To this day the Working Designs version of Cosmic Fantasy 3 has never been seen in public and no information exists on its whereabouts. All we can do is look up at the stars and dream of what might have been.
In 1994 the Cosmic Fantasy Series continued on following Yuu’s return to the present. In order to fit every idea into the next game, it was split into two discs. Unlike games of a larger scale these days, the two discs were sold separately, released a few months apart that year.

In 1987 Nintendo and Wanpaku Comics released monthly issues of a manga based on The Legend of Zelda 2: the Adventure of Link. The series was written by Ran Maru and ran for 18 months, leaving nearly 600 pages and amazing story behind. It's mostly unknown in The West and has never been translated. Now the story can be told for the first time!
The story is a direct sequel of the Legend of Zelda manga printed in 1986. See it here! youtu.be/BeBFN9hdk-8
Also the English version of Zelda II suffered from long delays and sold out stock. Why? Find out here! youtu.be/H6zYKiueCEA

Opening Transcript
It had been nearly two years since Link, Watto and the people of Hyrule defeated Ganon and his evil army on Death Mountain. After the Battle, the powers of The Triforce of Wisdom and the Triforce of Power were used to bring Zelda, the Princess of Hyrule, back to life. When the the kingdom and its people were liberated from Gannon’s forces, peace and prosperity returned to the land, thanks to the powers of the Triforces being restored.
But soon after normalcy had returned, things turned dark once again. Heavy rains swept the lands, farms withered and died. The people of Hyrule feared that though Ganon had been slain, he was somehow was the root cause of this plight and that his army would soon return. One stormy night at the castle, Princess Zelda’s serpents tried to console her, and get to eat something for her own well being. But Zelda couldn’t. She knew well what the hand of Ganon felt like, and was frightened beyond consolation.
Watto also tried to cheer up Zelda by reminding her that Link would soon be here to investigate the problem and help however he can. But with those words, a sudden crash is heard and Moblins storm the castle, entering Zelda’s chamber! Zelda’s bodyguard, Billy, who helped Link rescue Zelda from Ganon, rushes to the scene, but there are just too many thugs to fight off. Another man arrives to help fight them off. When Watto asks who he is, he takes off his hood to reveal his identity.... Link!

This video used several resources others worked hard to find. Thanks to Atari Age, Atari Museum run by the late, great Curt Vendel, Chris Covell and Random Terrain/Replayability for being great caretakers of Atari information.
Japanese information came from Famitsu, Famimaga and Sukora (Scholar) magazines. Other footage taken from various trailers, promos and advertisements from that time.
The following video is a RE-UPLOAD of the original episode, aired on July 2, 2021. The reason for re-uploading is that the original file was somehow corrupted by YouTube's processing system, resulting in the video cutting off at the 10 minute mark. Despite trying to fix the problem multiple times, nothing worked. The video is exactly the same as before, but if you saw it the first time around, try to still look surprised.

Partial Transcript
In the late 1980s, Japan became the center of the universe for two distinct art forms: Video Games and Animation. Both were popular in Japan long before then, but by this point in time, have made their way around the world. Oftentimes, the two would cross paths. For example a popular Video Game might be turned into an Anime series, or vice versa. There might also be a Manga or a feature film! Don’t forget action figures! The soundtrack gets released on CD and then those songs go on to be used in commercials for other products and services. All of which are served to promote each other.
It happens all the time! This convergence is so common, that in Japan, the concept has its own term: Media Mix! In English, the closest word is franchise or crossover, but they don’t convey the exact same feeling.
In that long gone Golden Age of Japan, Sega had a hand in letting various Anime and Manga series come to life in video game form, by licensing these works for their 8-bit TV Game machine, the Mark III, also known as the Master System.
With Sega operating many different product lines beyond Video Games, it was possible for the company to create a Media Mix of its own by collaborating with media production companies eager for their works to enter the massive Video Game market.
In 1986, Sega teamed up with Anime production company, Tatsunoko. It would be the first time the producers of both an Anime and a Video Game would work hand in hand to create a new product, rather than one simply licensing the rights to the other.
Sega would partially fund the Anime production, receiving a degree of creative control in exchange. Tatsunoko would create the characters, write the scripts and direct the animation as they normally would otherwise. Sega was allowed to insert their own characters and product placements, while retaining the rights to use the series in other ventures such as toys and games.
Alongside the Anime, Sega would develop a Video Game, featuring these characters and settings. The game would expand upon the original premise of the show, delivering the excitement of each episode in a different format. Most importantly, the game would not feel like a quick conversion, as it would be created by people who understood the source material.
The full title for each was Akai Kodan Zillion. In English, Red Photon Zillion.

A brief explanation about this book!
The Rockman manga series began in Japan in 1992, published by Kodansha and written by Shigeto Ikehara. The books covered both the GameBoy and Family Computer series of games. While they were distinct and separate, the series began with Rockman 4 in 1992. Only after that were the first 3 games given a manga treatment. So the books were not written in order, nor when all of the games were new. The book covering the first game was very close to the story of the game, as was the second, though some liberties were taken. By this point all of the 8-bit games had a manga retelling, except for 3. In July 1994, the book Yomigaeru Blues was published in Japan. The story was compiled from weekly strips the were published months before. The book tries to create a new and different story that would be more interesting than just following the script of the game, which by then was 4 years old.
The book was written with the audience having knowledge of the complete series of games, as well as books that came after the setting of Rockman 3. As a result, some things in the book are left very ambiguous. There is no origin story for Rush, nor is Mega Man told that he and Proto Man were both built by Dr. Light. Dr. Cossack knew Dr. Light before the events of Mega Man 4 and are friends or at least colleagues. Some of Dr. Cossack's robots appear in the story, which makes sense because these are the robots he used when he turned evil in the next game.
So if you read this book at the end of the series, it works almost like a "gaiden," though it shares many elements of Mega Man 3 and does feature each of the robot masters, even if some of them are just in the background. Long story short, there is no book called "Rockman 3" but this is as close as you'll get.
I took some liberties with the presentation. The book has 5 chapters, though for the purposes of having a balanced video, I turned it into 6 chapters, by putting the submarine battle into its own chapter, which was originally part of chapter 2. The start and end of other chapters are shifted, as the start each boss battle ends a chapter, while the battle finishes at the start of the next one.
I removed some anachronisms that would place the story beyond the third game, which made sense for those who read the books in order, but would not make sense if you had not read them, and followed the story of the games. Other things, like Eddie, were left in because they were too essential to the plot, but who's to say he wasn’t created before Rockman 4 and just wasn't used??
