Turner Classic Movies Episode 7 – The Legend

After being removed from a film and ruining his friendship with Henry Fonda, John Ford begins to openly challenge his previous work. He deconstructs the Western and, for the first time, makes films specifically about Indians and women. But his power in Hollywood dwindles, and he soon finds himself out of work, a living legend living off his savings. As Ford enters his 70s, his movies are rediscovered and he is showered with honors and accolades, even as he denies his own artistry every chance he gets. Though he does accept one major award... from none other than the President of the United States.

MAKING CHANGE: THE MOST SIGNIFICANT POLITICAL FILMS OF ALL TIME coming to TCM in September

Turner Classic Movies 2024-08-27 | Turner Classic Movies (TCM) announced that Making Change: The Most Significant Political Films of All Time, a nine-week limited series showcasing films from the list by The New Republic, will premiere September 6, 2024, at 8PM ET/PT. TCM host Ben Mankiewicz and influential guests from all sectors of culture including Steven Spielberg, Melissa Etheridge, and John Turturro will dive into cinema’s most impactful political films.

“Americans - understandably - often want to get as far away from politics as possible. But I grew up in Washington, DC, in a house where it was the family business. So I learned at an early age that, whether we like it or not, politics intersects with our culture every day,”
says TCM host Ben Mankiewicz. “And the movies, since before the arrival of sound, have long served as a barometer of our political climate. This series brings an eclectic mix of filmmakers, actors, political figures, and journalists to TCM to discuss a varied selection
of brilliant movies. Along the way, we’ll discuss how great films have managed to predict political culture, to reflect it, and to challenge it.”

Eleanor Powell Tap Dances With Buttons the Dog in LADY BE GOOD | Mad About Musicals | TCM

Turner Classic Movies 2024-08-02 | In preparation for Eleanor Powell's dance routine to the title song in LADY BE GOOD (’41), MGM auditioned several dogs, but none could do the tricks required. Powell eventually bought a dog and trained it herself for weeks in order to fully master the choreography. Legendary choreographer Busby Berkeley, who staged all the numbers in the film, called Powell "by far the finest female dancer we ever had in films, and a very hardworking perfectionist."

Russ Tamblyn’s Unforgettable “Shovel Dance” from THE FASTEST GUN ALIVE | Mad About Musicals | TCM

Turner Classic Movies 2024-07-12 | Legendary actor and dancer Russ Tamblyn initially resented being cast in THE FASTEST GUN ALIVE because he felt his role wasn’t interesting or challenging but changed his mind when he was told he’d be allowed to do his own dance number on screen.

Glenn Ford assumed the number would be the kind of brief musical interlude that often appeared in musicals but when he saw Tamblyn’s extraordinary routine, he was astonished. Ford, who was married to esteemed tap dancer and actress Eleanor Powell, was fond of dance numbers but felt Tamblyn’s number was out of place in the film.

As Tamblyn later recalled Ford said “This is a little western here and this guy is coming in and trying to do a Donald O’Connor all over the walls.” Ford tried to get the number cut from the film and it was said to have been cut from the preview but the credits still contained a reference to Russ Tamblyn’s dance number and the audience demanded to see it.

The number was reinserted into the picture and ended up being one of the highlights of the film.

John Ford was born in Maine as Sean Aloysius O’Feeney… or so he says. His birth records say differently, and it would not be the last time he changes his name. As a child, he visits Ireland and falls in love with his heritage, and later fights at the University of Maine when confronted with an Irish slur. He rediscovers his long-lost older brother Francis while watching the “flickers” and follows him to Hollywood. He gets work as his brother’s stunt double then he fibs his way into directing features, eventually making his name on a pair of famous silent Westerns that still astonish today. As Hollywood transitions to talkies, Ford befriends the man who would become his friend, his muse, and his enabler, a young football player named John Wayne.

Ford was a bully and a drunk who ruled Hollywood for five decades, making dozens of seminal movies – though he was incredibly hard to pin down. His behavior swung wildly from loyalty to cruelty, without notice. He won more Oscars than any director in history, but never showed up to accept an award. And he rewrote American history, painting the country with images so beautiful that people wished they were real. John Ford defined the attitudes of his time, ideas about masculinity and heroism that we're still grappling with today. Turner Classic Movies 2024-05-17 | For his legendary number in IT'S ALWAYS FAIR WEATHER ('55), Gene Kelly bought his own roller skates near his house at the time. According to Kelly, the skates were not altered to accommodate his dancing, so he had no "help" when he had to tap.

The film was one of the last musicals of MGM’s golden age, and it is that rarest of creatures: a cynical musical. The story follows the misadventures of a trio of veterans after their 10-year reunion and their mutual disappointment at how far each has strayed from their dreams and youthful integrity.
