Heres Where Mumbais Movie Theatre Samosas Come From | Part 1 VICE Asia 2024-02-29 | After the India-Pakistan partition, Nevandram Wadhwa moved from Karachi with his sons - Kishinchand Wadhwa (Ganesh’s grandfather), Mohan Singh Wadhwa, Lalchand Wadhwa and Vishindas Wadhwa. In 1968, Nevandram started his samosa business wherein he would carry a basket of fresh samosas on his head from Sion to Kalbadevi everyday. He would sell them and get the money to make his next batch. With the increase in demand, he got a bicycle and then moved to a cart. Eventually, he employed laborers and figured vehicles. Today, 90% of mulitplexes and 80% of single screens across Mumbai serve A1 Samosas, including the ones you get in PVRs and Inox, Maratha Mandir, Gaiety Galaxy, Movie Max, Mukta Cinema etc. Currently, A1 Samosas has a staff of more than 50 people, making more than 12 varieties of samosas and the production rate stands at 12,000-15,000 samosas daily. Till date, at least 50% occupancy in theatres prefer samosas over other snacks. “I’ve had samosas all over Mumbai. There are many competitors of samosa makers which provide samosas at a cheaper rate but I assure you that you no one can even come close to A1 Samosas.” said Farokh, who’s been a canteen manager at Gaiety Galaxy since 1987. “The years 1987 to 1992 was the peak for samosas. A taxi was booked just to deliver samosas show wise. At the time, hits like DDLJ, Hum Aapke Hai Koun, Raja Hindustani, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, Sadak would play for 20 to 30 weeks in cinemas at full occupancy.” Manoj Desai, Executive Director of G7 Multiplex and Maratha Mandir said, “When I first had the samosas, I loved them so much that I immediately started serving them in my theatres. 79 Percent Rise In Animal Cruelty And Welfare Cases In 2023: SPCA Singapore VICE Asia 2024-02-20 | Graphic content: viewer discretion advisedIn 2023, Singapore saw an 11-year high in animal cruelty and welfare cases, according to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). A total of 915 cases were reported, with two main categories: abuse and cruelty, and welfare and neglect.Around two-thirds of the cases fell under the welfare and neglect category, where pet owners failed to provide proper care and basic needs for their animals, resulting in poor living conditions. Some cases involved abandonment, hoarding, and incidents of pets falling from heights due to a lack of proper safety measures.In response to these alarming statistics, the SPCA is advocating for legislative changes to strengthen animal protection in Singapore. Why This South Korean Man Closes Dog Meat Farm After 30 Years VICE Asia 2023-08-10 | Today is the last day of Boknal, South Korea’s hottest summer days. It’s traditional to eat special dishes during Boknal, including bosintang, a controversial stew containing boiled dog meat. While traditions are valued in the country, the consumption of dog meat is declining as more people view dogs as companions rather than livestock. According to a 2022 poll of 1,514 respondents, 85.5 percent of Koreans said they don’t consume dog meat. Yang Jong-tae, a dog meat farmer in South Korea, closed down his farm in March after running it for 30 years. The decision came after he was contacted by Humane Society International (HSI), a non-profit organization that is currently campaigning across Asia to end the dog meat trade. The rescued dogs from this operation were transported to the U.S. for adoption.Dog meat trade is not illegal in the country. However, discussions about prohibiting it have been going on for years. In 2021, then-president Moon Jae-in brought up the possibility of banning dog meat. Last June, lawmaker Han Jeoung-ae proposed a bill to ban dog meat entirely. But no changes have been made so far. In this video, Yang explains why he’s leaving the industry.

Shocking Moment a Plane Door Is Opened During a Flight In South Korea VICE Asia 2023-06-01 | A man was arrested after reportedly pulling a lever to open the emergency exit door of an Asiana Airlines flight in South Korea.Viral footage shows winds buffeting rows of seated passengers as the plane comes in to land."It was chaos with people close to the door appearing to faint one by one and flight attendants calling out for doctors on board through broadcasting," a 44-year-old passenger told the Yonhap news agency.The passengers also included school children who were on their way to a sporting event. The mother of one of the students said: “The children were shaking, crying and frightened. Those sitting near the exit must have been shocked the most.”The flight arrived safely at Daegu International Airport, but with the door still open. Several passengers required hospital treatment for breathing problems.Flight attendants could not stop the suspect from opening the door because they were seated for the plane to land. Witnesses say he even tried to jump out of the plane.“It is difficult to have a normal conversation with him,” an official said. “We will investigate the motive of the crime and punish him.”
