4.88 World Record Square-1 Average | Dylan Baumbach Oxzowachi 2024-08-26 | (4.48) 4.82 (deleted 5.21) (7.90) 4.84 4.97I started developing OBL Prediction (OBLP) during a snow week in college in January 2023, knowing that it could just be the leg up I need to make me a real WR contender. I soon started posting crazy unofficial averages on my alt channel with huge amounts of overinspection, with neither I nor anyone else knowing if it would ever be a viable method in competition. Nevertheless, I continued to practice it. However, it would not be until a full year and 34 rounds later in February 2024 that I got my first PR average with it: 5.26. A long, agonizing year had passed by, wasting round after round and feeling my doubt in the method increasing each time; but finally, I had something to show for it. This average marked a turning point in my competition performance: the era of ‘almost’. Two rounds later I got my first ever sub-WR best possible average (BPA), 4.60. But the thing that killed this average was actually OBLP; I mispredicted OBL on the crucial last solve and missed a super easy solution that I could have gotten world record on even if I had just not tried to predict it at all. This was a crushing moment, especially because I knew that opportunities like that would not come very often. But over the next 15 rounds, I got not one more chance, not two, but six more chances at the world record, and missed it every time. I tried to focus on just getting sub-6 averages and not world record averages, but nevertheless it hurt a bit more each round. With other top solvers starting to learn and use OBLP officially, I knew I was running out of time to ever get any kind of record; I couldn’t keep almost doing it. I had already stumbled through a year and a half with no records to show for my hard work, and it started to feel like the most I would ever get is my collection of BPAs and championship titles. But finally, I didn’t almost do it, I did it. Even if it’s only by three hundredths of a second, I could not be more happy with this average; after seeming to lose all composure on the fourth solve and possibly losing my sub-5 average from the misscramble, I clutched out a sub-5 on a terrible CS/OBL, and with a cubeshape that I just learned how to predict OBL from two weeks ago. Ivan Vanek gave me this cube in person on Day 0 of the North American Championship, and he asked me to write a review for him in return. Considering I wasn’t in love with the first cube he had given me, which had a couple extra mods on it, I asked him if I should publish a negative review if I ended up not liking it; he said yes. However, the trimmed-back combination of mods on this new cube leaves me with nothing but great things to say about it. These are all the mods it has:1. maglev tensions2. double polished exterior3. edge magnetization4. repulsion magnetization with double slice repulsionI personally cannot recommend getting your cube dyed or weight reduced, as this new cube without those modifications has been significantly more enjoyable and successful for me. Simply select the four mods I listed if you want to get the exact same puzzle. Right out of the box, I knew this cube was something special. The U/D layers seem to complete turns by themselves, having a slight “on rails” feel to them that the best GAN cubes have. But at the same time, the cube is somehow nowhere close to uncontrollable; in fact, it is an extremely stable, reliable, and smooth cube that made it perfect for competing with immediately. Beyond that, I don't really know how to explain why I love this cube so much, but I plan on using it for the foreseeable future. Everyone else that tried it at NAC, including Max, Sameer, and Hassan, all said it was very good. And the fact that I even tried competing with a brand new cube at one of the biggest competitions ever says a lot, let alone the fact that it was actually extremely successful. It’s just the perfect competition cube for me, and I don’t think I would have done this well at NAC with any other cube. A year later, I placed 10th in finals at CubingUSA Nationals with a completely disheartening performance. This year, after coming into this competition with a record six consecutive sub-6 official averages, I was certain that I was going to break the streak and succumb to the pressure once again. Instead, I got my best Square-1 performance ever, and by the metric of my 5.20 mean of three rounds, THE best Square-1 performance ever. I got a 5.01 PR average in first round, then placed first seed going into finals, and then miraculously kept it together to win finals with the pressure of being first seed.I didn't believe Luke Griesser when he said "youre absolutely gonna kill it next year" on my Nationals 2023 video, but he couldn't have been more correct. Thanks to him and everyone else that was rooting for me going into this competition.As for the solves themselves, they are certainly far from perfect. There were three major mistakes in this average: failing OBLP on the first solve, failing to onelook PBL on the second solve, and completely failing an easy PBL on the fourth. These scrambles were absolutely insane, and a sub-4.5 average was certainly possible. Even so, I am still very happy with my performance in this round because I predicted OBL on 4/5 solves and correctly traced CSP on 5/5, compared to 1/5 and 3/5 respectively last year.Congrats to Hassan and Max on making this a new world record podium, and thanks to Fletcher Berry for his footage of the last solve.Last but certainly not least, a huge thank you to Ivan Vanek for giving me the best Square-1 I've ever had, which I used in all three rounds at this competition. Also, the second round was my only real opportunity at getting WR on the last solve considering the scrambles I got; I misvisualized OBL and thought it was a 4-slicer instead of an easy 2-slicer and almost certainly would have gotten BPA. Still, this was obviously a pretty agonizing experience getting so close to a good average in all three rounds. I'm only going to get so many of these chances, and I am far from guaranteed to get WR at any point. I can't really imagine keeping up this kind of performance for much longer.

I average 8.6 (my ao1000 at home has been ~8.6 for a long time) and now I have a sub-7 official 3x3 average. Hilariously, I calculated my 6.98 BPA in the waiting area before the last solve which is basically the worst thing you can do for nerves, but I ended up getting a PLL skip and actually getting it. This currently ranks me 249th in the world down from my 7.23 average that was WR329. I do not plan on beating this.
5.26 Official WR4 Square-1 Average Oxzowachi 2024-02-05 | (4.48), 5.37, (11.61), 5.90, 4.51 = 5.26Final Round of DFW Cubing Winter 2024As you can tell, this is not exactly my happiest moment. Despite me technically breaking my 14-month-long mental barrier of my 5.57 average from November 2022, I feel no joy or relief about this average. All because of an unusual timer stop that prevented me from feeling the emotional fulfillment I have waited so long for.Now all I'm left with is a harder average to beat.
My Craziest Square-1 Average Ever (4.92 BPA) Oxzowachi 2024-01-15 | This average was quite an emotional roller coaster. Started off with two bad solves in finals, then somehow clutched out three good solves at the end to finally break the mental barrier of my year-old 5.57 PR average (ignoring the illegal timer stop on the 5.90 in retrospect lol). Then I go back to check the scrambles and find out there's a misscramble, except it was on my worst counting solve; now, I could either completely blow this huge accomplishment with a bad E1, or I could get something way crazier and get within .01 of the world record average. Unfortunately, the former happened as I was unable to trace OBLP in time and got a really bad OBL and PBL (Hazard/Hazard into bad B/C++).Still, I am super happy to get a sub-5 BPA and also to at least believed for a few moments that I had finally broken my 5.57. Instead of using the old 'a' and 'b' distinctions for specific variations of PLLs, Makanaming simply calls cases by how they look: aligned or misaligned ('a' or 'm'), left or right ('l' or 'r'). This eliminates the confusion from the z2 flip when describing bottom-layer PLLs in the traditional notation, eliminates the need to memorize which PLLs are 'a' or 'b', and comes naturally to most people once exposed to it. I knew it would take an extremely lucky set of scrambles for me to pull it off (I haven't been practicing much recently), and with just three rounds left before I go off to college next week, the odds weren’t looking good. I might have been happy enough with my 6.13 PR average in Round 2, and I didn’t expect to do any better in finals considering the “last chance” circumstances. But I was blessed by the gods of Square-1, and despite some painful lockups and pauses, I was still able to accomplish the one thing I needed to do before I could move on with my heart at peace.I am incredibly happy and honored to secure my spot as the fifth person to get a sub-6 Square-1 average in competition, which also makes the top five official Square-1 averages sub-6 and all with OBL/PBL. Also, huge congrats to my friends @anshuchennuru and @RyanPilat for their respective 6.68 and 7.39 PR averages, which made this podium the 4th fastest podium in the world! 6.27 WR4 Square-1 Average | North American Champion [OBL/PBL] Oxzowachi 2022-07-12 | (8.76), (5.32), 5.47, 5.72, 7.63Considering my last competition's performance, I would have been thrilled to just podium at the North American Championships. But instead, I pulled off the impossible and somehow beat the incredible Max and Sameer when it really mattered, and got PR average at the same time. After getting a remarkably similar first four solves to my first round average where I +2ed out of sub-6, the only word going through my mind before the last solve was "safety". And that's what I did; I got a very shaky but penalty-free 7.6 which was enough for 4th place in the world and first at NA Champs, making me incredibly honored to be the first ever Square-1 North American Champion. The scrambles were pretty bad in terms of CSP and OBL for me, but I got really lucky with my PBLs which definitely helped make up for my horrid turning throughout. I'm definitely a little bummed about counting a mid-7, but I really can't complain about a winning average, especially considering my apparently well-hidden shakiness and the terrible CSP case on the last solve.
