As this beautiful setting is just a couple of hours from our door here in Okinawa, something I continually have to pinch myself about, I took advantage of a great stint of weather and took the local ferry from the port of Naha in southern Okinawa.Warm and inviting water saw me spend numerous hours snorkeling in the company of Sea Turtles, albeit Sea Turtles in the midst of tourist hordes. Split Water Shots - Ocean Trials with the AquaTech PD16 MegaDome seawildearth 2022-12-21 | My first time in the water with the Aquatech PD16 dome port. I would normally shoot between f8 and f11, f16 on a super sunny day but opted for f5.6 given we were at the tail end of the day and the sun was setting. I also wanted to play around in aperture priority so I could get the workflow down, or make a start on it anyway. Surfing Okinawa - Sunabe Seawall at Sunset seawildearth 2022-10-21 | If I could sing a song to the Ocean, it would be this. Shot during a couple of swims at the Sunabe Seawall which also happens to be the surfing hub of Okinawa. Sadly the condition was pancakes but it allowed some nice slow-motion clips. While this is readily visible as a location, I will not be naming other breaks should I venture out to other locations moving forward. OUTEX Dome Ports and Flat Ports - My first trial. seawildearth 2022-10-01 | I'm starting shallow water scenic photography here in Okinawa and as such have opted to try the Outex protective casing with flat and dome ports for the complete option for creative imaging. While I do intend to step into shallow waves and imaging this system will not be used in anything greater than two to three-foot waves given the lack of protection it offers the camera from an impact point of view should I get rag-dolled by a wave etc. This is an overview of the product and a guide on how to fit both the front and back flat ports as well as the different options for fitting dome ports depending on the form factor of the wide angle lens you may be using. Ocean Time at Toguchi Beach in Okinawa seawildearth 2022-09-13 | Toguchi Beach in Okinawa is a great place to head out and play in the shallows. From time to time there are also some waves, especially given the recent passing of Typhoon Hinnamnor. Today's video is simply from some recent downtime. I opted to hit the water with my GoPro Hero8 Black and see how I fared in the small waves on the reef. The one gripe I have now with the GoPro's, you'll know of my on / off love/hate relationship with these action cameras. I noticed when I was swimming without the camera in a casing that the camera would switch to the other modes whenever I stopped recording. I had to ensure it was in video mode each time prior to hitting the record button! Pretty infuriating since I had simply taken a photo at the onset of the sequence where I had my best wave of the day only to see a frothy photo instead! Shooting Naked seawildearth 2022-09-08 | A total sense of unburdened freedom swept over me. Naked and unapologetic I aimed the camera into the wind and fired away. Urm it is the camera that's naked, not me! I usually shoot with all manner of filters, filter holders, and tape on parts of the camera. Today I shot with just the camera, a lens, and myself. Super Typhoon Hinnamnor Approaching Okinawa seawildearth 2022-08-31 | We're about to get slammed, by all accounts, by Super Typhoon Hinnamnore which is almost on our doorstep here in Okinawa. I'm hoping to bring you three videos over the coming days as this thing does it's dance over the islands. It's also a rare beast as most Typhoons are done and dusted in a day, this one looks like it's going to be sitting on us for a few days at least. Laowa 12mm f2.8 Filter Holder for Landscape Photography seawildearth 2022-05-11 | Super wide angle lenses tend to have a very unique form factor that impedes the use of screw in filters. To use them, as I use the Laowa 12mm f2.8 Zero Distortion for Oceanscape and Landscape photography requires the use of a specific adapter constructed for that particular lens. These adapters are different depending on the physical characteristics of the lenses they are intended to work with. Photographing Cape Zampa, Okinawa. seawildearth 2022-05-03 | Cape Zampa has got to be one of my favorite spots for long exposure photography in Okinawa. Most folks go there without the knowledge of the immediate area and tend to take the same cookie cutter images. As a souvenir that's not a bad thing. Blessed with being based on the island means I have time to explore and as such I've been able to delve into the whole region of the Cape and have found at least seven really nice compositions. Catch up with this latest installment from seawildearth as I get to grips with a long exposure shot along the dramatic cliffs of the Cape using a Canon EOS 5DSr fitted with a Canon 70-200mm f4. Calculating Long Exposure Shutter Speeds seawildearth 2022-04-29 | Shooting the number of long exposures I do I've kinda gotten used to understanding what works with what strength of ND Filters in any given weather situation. But for someone starting out understanding how to figure out adjusted shutter speeds when using ND Filters can be a challenge.Life is so much easier in the digital age with Apps that are also now run of the mill for figuring out what long exposure shutter speeds should be. That said they are not perfect so one can also turn to charts that have been made that cover most filters and shutter speeds depending on the desired artistic look the photographer is after. How to Calculate Long Exposure Shutter Speeds seawildearth 2022-02-28 | How to calculate long exposure times when using ND Filters? Well, there's an App for that! in fact there are a number of apps. Just be understanding that some may not be as accurate as others as in this demonstration using the same base commodities of aperture and unfiltered shutter speed from the metered composition. Extreme Long Exposures with an ND10000 seawildearth 2022-02-24 | Recently had the itch to head out and shoot some extreme long exposures. Going stir crazy after spending way too much time in the apartment recently I opted to head out to a local favorite haunt of mine on a day when I could break out the ND10000. This extreme filter basically reduces the amount of light entering a lens by a factor of 13.3 apertures. Thus to expose correctly, if both the ISO and Aperture remain the same, means extending the shutter to crazy times given the extreme reduction of light. In this example a 5min 45sec exposure for the resulting image. Check it out. I know there are some Apps that allow you to calculate extended shutter exposure times based on the settings you wish to shoot. These apps and 'cheat sheets' will only get you to the ballpark area. To refine the exposure will require 'walking in' to it once you start to get close. Andersons Crocodile Newt seawildearth 2021-03-02 | A recent herping trip into the jungles of Okinawa bought me face to face with one of the truly iconic species of the region. Endemic and endangered the Anderson's Crocodile Newt is also classified as a Natural Monument here in Japan.I never thought when out looking for an endangered species that I'd encounter so many of the infamous Himei Habu Pit Vipers on a single night here in Okinawa. Just how many Habu Pit Vipers were out this night is anyone's guess. I stopped counting at 17! Check out the first few minutes of this video? Bananas, to coin a phrase.
