Star Trek Voyager - Blu-ray 1080p HD Intro fan mockup
updated
SNW side by side with the shoddy Discovery intro I made 4 years back.
I love it.
youtu.be/LyQSSTbzZCE
Changelog:
-658 subs in the YouTube communities tab voted for the volumetric logo, and it's a beaut decision!
-Glow layers added to nacelles, bussards, nav deflector and windows
-Draft 2D starfield added (not 3D yet)
-LUT/colour correction
-Brightness correction
-Refined nacelle flashes
-Slightly increased warp jump speed
-TNG TV-style warp star
-Rerendered rear frames of ship with altered lighting rig and raytracing (awaiting same render of front 480 frames)
-6 Nav light flares and flashes (two remaining on the aft shot)
-Animated logo + volumetric edge rays
-Refined warp jump SFX
-Picard monologue added (unable to extract vocals at a reasonable quality from original intro so extracted from a game intro using an AI acapella process). Any one know of a clean version of Sir Pat's original TV monologue?
Remaining:
-Two nav light flares + flashes on aft frames
-Integrate rerendered front raytraced frames of the ship and associated brightness correction
-3D starfield
-Rerender 2D starfield with higher antialiasing ready to integrate with the rest of the intro
-Brighter rerender of logo animation
-Subtle lens dust effects for the nacelle flashes and warp star (
-Probably add a little more reverb to the warp star SFX
-Output finalised PNG frames without compression
-Considering creating a Patreon account, would anyone consider contributing $2 a month? Xander needs to upgrade from 1st to 3rd gen Threadripper, render times are a major bottleneck, $3000 dollar CPU = ouch!
I remixed and extended the original theme from 1 min 46 secs to 2 mins 10 using elements from the TNG season 1 and season 7 titles, as well as the Motion Picture and First Contact soundtracks.
Hopefully it sounds solid, I don't think most people would know the difference, and gives me a timecode framework for the rest of the storyboard with an extra 25 seconds.
I’m also tinkering with a 4k rework of the logo, retaining the glorious 80’s aesthetic.. I’ll continue to play around with it as the project progresses!
Just an early draft render, not representative of the final product ;-)
This is Acting Captain William T. Riker of the USS Enterprise...
We replaced all of our starships with a 3000 copypasta fleet, ignore that our shipyard on Mars was destroyed.
Please also ignore that us Romulans couldn't evacuate our own empire with the hundreds of ships you see here.
That is all.

This recreation is nothing but my love for the Voyager title sequence. Voyager VFX under the wizardry of Dan Curry and his team drove me as a teen to wanting to emulate my heroes and work toward a future in VFX. I'm not quite there yet.

Thanks Gizmodo!
I originally recreated this title sequence in 2012 when entering the world of VFX and animation. Since then I have gained a bit more experience and wanted to revisit the project again, so this is me giving something back to the community.
This is also very much hero worship of Dan Curry, title designer; John Grower, effects and animation supervisor; Erik Tiemens, storyboard/design; and Eric Guaglione, animation supervisor, who won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Main Title Design in 1995, and the reason I got in to VFX!
You can see my laughable 2012 attempt here:

The ship herself is a highly modified version of Voyager originally by Sarod (demozoo.org/graphics/47985), which has been knocking around online since the late 90’s. I retextured and bought it up to 4k standards including miniature cabins behind windows, a complete rebuild of the nacelles, and some (non canon) self-illumination.
I used a plugin for Lightwave called “Turbulence FD” from Jawset (jawset.com) for the fluid simulation in the nebula segment, and aside from that everything else is stock.
“Star Trek and all related marks, logos and characters are solely owned by CBS Studios Inc. This fan production is not endorsed by, sponsored by, nor affiliated with CBS, Paramount Pictures, or any other Star Trek franchise, and is a non-commercial fan-made film intended for recreational use. It's essentially just a bunch of blocks at differing sizes, parented up to a null at the center of the planet, and then rotate the null while the blocks spit out particles.
To save on resources I only make the rings around just over 180 degrees of the planet, as there's no reason to clog up the workflow with particles and objects which won't actually be seen.
Next up I'll finalise the camera movements before I add to the scene load with instancing for each individual particle/object in the ring system.
Depending on render performance I may have to reduce the number of particles/instances, but at this stage it looks pretty neat and I thought it would be interesting to see how to get to the final render, rather than just the final render.
On a plus note, the first (sun), second (flyby) and third (nebula) segments are now complete. This is the last of the complex scenes so there will be a fast turnaround on the remaining two segments.
Segments 2 and 3 are complete, currently running some particle sims for the 1st segment with the sun/star, and finalising some workaround with flickering of Voyager's wake at the end of the 3rd/nebula section caused by network rendering.
Tinkering, previs stuff and full res tests usually go on facebook.com/neonvisual by the way, so I don't clutter up this channel shoving every minor tweak in to everyone's feed.
This was a good time for me to try out some text overlays. Strictly speaking the voyager logo had a more triangular bevel, but I took a bit of artistic licence in adding some environmental and reflection details to bring out the resolution without being too hostile to the TV version.
It’s taken the best part of a month to finish it, my electricity bill is going to be huge with all of the test renders, and I bought a plugin called TurbulenceFD which is designed for fluid and gas dynamic simulations.
The fluid sim alone ran in to 650GB, 1.94million particles. My render nodes have 500gb drives though, so I had to also configure my workstation to act as a network drive and not fall over when it was also rendering as a node.
I could keep on refining it, there are bits I'd like to push forward a bit further, but part of VFX is sticking to the budget. In my case the budget is time.
But I’m proud of the results and must move on to other segments now. I’ve pretty much pushed the plugin to it’s limits here, it’s designed for fire and smoke explosive sims, I wish there were an option for randomising the particle size a bit so the nose of Voyager had more going on.
I figure the 2nd most complex segment will be the ringed planet, so I’m going to do one of the more simplistic scenes next so I don’t have to work for another month to get a sense of completion and satisfaction!
For 4K viwers you might want to download the unbastardised version without YouTube’s compression, and instead watch at 130Mbps to see how your display handles it.

It's a plug in called TurbulenceFD from Jawset (www.jawset.com). I believe it can also be used in C4D, but I have the Lightwave version. It's taken me about two weeks getting to grips with it, but it's a very powerful plugin for fluid dynamics.
To keep render times down I'm going to key in Voyager after rendering the sim separately. I've run some tests and it looks good.
The original TV version was a shot produced by Santa Barbara Studios and overseen by Dan Curry. They won awards for it back in the day and used in-house software called "Dynamation".
They used CGI for 3 of the six effects shots. and the studio model for the remainder.
No post yet, will likely be some flares, lens dirt, chromatic aberrations, the usual shit. I'd have preferred to give Voyager some more banking angle as it flies off around the sun, to prevent it looking too much like a sprite, but I'm doing my best to keep it as close to the original as possible, with added detail, rather than barrel rolls. Right now I'm focusing on the next segment in the nebula, as it's the most complicated to deal with, I'll come back to this once it's done.
There are more test shots of this, and other sections on facebook.com/neonvisual if you're interested in seeing previs of 55 million particles in an 850GB sim for the nebula section...
A bit more experience this time around. Should be a lot of fun!
I've tried to highlight the "leaked" soundtrack with bits of footage I feel draw from previous Trek signatures. Some of my own VFX thrown in.
It does sound very ST: Online with it's blatant mashup of other trek themes, almost like a parody to avoid paying copyright royalties. I've highlighted some with visuals, especially the Voyager section which is especially blatant, but given that the only VFX for DSC we've seen so far are in the video game ballpark, it wouldn't surprise me if it's the case :-/ Filming begins in 48 hours, so as each episode is complied the soundtrack will be recorded, and incorporated into the post edit. The main theme will be on paper by now. While this does sound very synth, you can clearly hear the brass screw up a few notes here and there, so it's an authentic, studio-mastered recording with a real orchestra. General consensus is that the video games rarely tend to use an orchestral recording. So, chances are that this is either a rejected theme, or the actual theme. IMHO it's too safe, and a mish-mash of other signature trek tunes to the point of a beautiful orchestra sounding like a comic-con presentation.
It's obviously hugely inspired by Jerry Goldsmith, RIP, it could be dropped in to "Air Force One" with zero effort, but it's not him. IMHO the pacing is all over the place, it's trying too hard to bridge between what came before and what's coming next. The trouble is that this is a prequel, so we already know what's coming next.
As a video game this would be up in the top five for production values, even if it's a tad schizophrenic, but as a signature theme tune of a the biggest budget trek series to date, I'm not convinced, even remotely, that it's of it's own. Not that anyone listening and reading this could do any better. It's just not quite original and could apply to any fan production hoping not to get a lawsuit with their latest upload.
Hopefully it's a grower, I've listened 50, maybe 100 times putting this montage together, and I like it a lot, it was a pleasure compiling, but I also like the Jurassic Park signature theme, hearing it for the first time didn't strike me as Trek, more like an American Parade, a Police Academy montage, or the end of some war movie. It's Starship troopers, Galaxy Quest.. I don't know what mileage it would get bringing in new folks to the universe. hmph. I'm also reminded quite a bit of Blanck Mass's colab with the London symphony in the 2012 Olympic games youtube.com/watch?v=uhv_vjaeP_M
Well, we've been here before.. yet another prequel, a theme tune trying to fit the vision of the show, rather than the history of the franchise. Funny thing is though, this would have fitted the cancelled "Enterprise" much more snugly than Russel Watson.
That ending needs fixing too.

*EDIT* It's grown on me. Pipe up the counterpoint, ditch the snare drums.

Voyager… she looks too small in that Golden Gate scene to me? I’m no expert on the matter, and have never been to San Fran, but surely she’s bigger than that bridge?
I’ve placed a final segment after the more-polished fireworks scene in wireframe, looks way more Jay-Jay lens flare to me. Voyager is too small. This of course means that I will have to re-render EVERYTHING again in bigger volumes, but no bother.
The choice is this…
I continue with the Endgame VFX opener you’ve been following, bound to it by Jay Chattaway’s soundtrack of Voyager’s triumphant return home.
Or I use Jay’s opening soundtrack of Voyager leaving DS9.
A tough call.
Which do you want?
Classic, or creative?
Now on to part 2. It should be much faster to produce as I have all the assets and settled on the visual style. Stay tuned!
The origianl Voyager mesh by Sard from the early 2000's (without my modifications) can be found on the trek mesh collection.
Still trying to figure out better firework reflections on the water.
A couple of fireworks out of time with the bridge light bursts.
Aside from that, pretty happy, and there's cwoffee in that nebular..
-Sea reflections missing
-G.G.Bridge reflections missing (temp reflections in place)
-Fireworks reflection missing
-Sea-level mist missing
-Fireworks need vertical rockets
-Missing greenery on foreground hill wind-blasted in voyager's wake
-Search light atenuation too high, too bright, when targeting the cam
-Motion Blur still in preview mode for draft renders.
-Some fireworks need a fade out
-AE lens and LW lens need sync (bridge outer edges drifting with cam pan.)
Enjoy!
At this stage of post I had yet to add the larger stars to the scene which you'll be able to see in the other finalised sequence. There was also an audio glitch at the end of this sequence which I had corrected in the other finalised upload.
The finalised version can be found here youtu.be/Ug0qLi0Cb80
There are some little issues in this render if I'm being picky, but I've corrected them for whatever the next sequence will be.
It was enjoyable having a slower scene as I could really get in to the star field and spend a bit of extra time on it.
Once I'm happy that I've ironed out picky issues I'm going to move on to Voyager returning to Earth as per the opening scenes of Endgame, the series finale!
Enjoy :)

I believe the original of this shot was crafted with the physical studio model. How those guys got a good balance of lighting in a bluscreen environment is beyond me.
I guess we do the same, in computers, only when we fuck up we can just hit undo :/
How can you ever learn if there's always an undo button?
4K isn't the answer to everything. Some of us grew up on the magic of blurryface VHS,... and maybe DVD... but 4k is here from an amateur if you want it.
:-)
I've intentionally slowed some visual aspects to a sensible level to bring out the detail in 4k.
I experimented with the craycray movements of the TV version and soon discovered there's little point in a 4k upscale as it just ends up a blurry mess like the original, at all resolutions.
It's a very busy scene, so, I adapted to take advantage of 4K whilst retaining as much of the TV version framework of original as possible to get a good balance of the two. I slowed down the vortex and constrained the tardis position closer to the central area, so watching on a 4k display won't require neck pain and hopefully a bit more unblurred eye candy available.
My first 4k production.. I think I need another 3 PC's to do more of this in future...
