THE ART OF MERGING AND HOW TO BE NICE TO CARS

RIDER GUIDER 2024-07-29 | Certainly in South Australia as far as motorcycling is concerned, there is a huge gap in what is taught in regards how to use and deal with merging traffic, especially at slip roads. The basic training given doesn't teach common courtesy in these situations, maybe car driving schools and lessons are different but if a rider has never driven, and gone straight to two wheels, how do they know what to do? Of course there are also vehicle driver's who are either ignorant or actually just arrogant and refuse to do the right thing. Here I show two examples of the correct way to deal with merging traffic at a slip road and also introduce my new hashtag #adjustpacecreatespace which will be thrown in to my social media when I'm doing my defensive riding tips and examples. YAMAHA TENERE 700 MOTOLOGY GPS MOUNT WITH BARKBUSTERS

RIDER GUIDER 2024-01-19 | After a request from Darius in Malta, here is my set up for the Motology GPS stabiliser on my Yamaha Tenere 700. It's a well known issue that this great product is not a straight forward fit if we install it alongside the ever popular Barkbusters due to clearance issues on full lock and the risk of the handlebars colliding with and damaging the clocks or GPS. Here is my explanation of what I had to do to make sure I reduced the risk of damaging my clocks in the event of dropping my Tenere 700.

Why you absolutely NEED jump leads for a motorbike

RIDER GUIDER 2023-09-26 | This jump starter kit is designed to make starting your bike easy when it is fully loaded and means you don't have to remove seats, panniers etc to access your battery. Part 1 of the kit connects to your battery with the Anderson look plug fitted somewhere you can access it quickly should you need it. Part 2 is the 1 meter long extension lead to take power from another bike. Part 3 is a set of alligator clamps should your ride buddy not have the kit fitted or you need to access power from a car of 4WD. If you ride in a pack and your mates have the kit fitted you can leave the alligator clamps home for the day and only take them if you are out on your own.

If you have more than one bike you can buy part 1 separately and just interchange parts 2 and 3 between bikes.

The Anderson look plug can also be used for keeping your battery on charge in the shed as well as other accessories such as a compressor etc. Just swap the leads over to an Anderson look plug on anything else you need power for.

Flush mount kits are available separately and just tidy it up a little more and provide even better access to power.

Have you considered the fact that as you get older and get towards retirement that you might, once you get there be unable to enjoy your planned rides as often as you dream to do. This isn't a rare occurrence, because as much as we plan financially by investing well in to our retirement funds, we often don't invest in our own physical and mental well being.

This is part 1, just a quick introduction of what will become a constant flow of information on what we're doing to ensure we can keep riding our motorbikes long in to retirement. We live in a world of confusing and often misleading information when it comes to food, diet, exercise and health advice. So what we've decided to do is share our experience and show the ongoing results of what we're doing to make sure we give ourselves every chance of being able to comfortably stay in the saddle for multiple days and also stay ride fit for decades to come.

YAMAHA TENERE 700 TRAIL STAND REAR WHEEL REMOVE AND REFIT

RIDER GUIDER 2023-03-31 | DISCLAIMER - I AM NOT A TRAINED YAMAHA TECHNICIAN - yet here you can see me rising to the challenge of removing and refitting the rear wheel of my Yamaha Tenere 700 ... normally no big deal? Well this is with a difference, no centre stand, and of course no paddock stand either as I'm on a bit of a ride in a real-world situation using just the 'Ride With Me' #trailstand which I last showed viewers on a recent video youtu.be/5Qqmqo-ZMVo when I gave it a bit of a review.

I decided to do this 'remove and refit' as it was suggested by a gentleman on a Tenere 700 Facebook page (thanks Carsten 😄) that it would possibly be too difficult a task because of the fact the back wheel wouldn't be vertical whilst using the trail stand. This is because of the potential struggle with the brake caliper, the potential damage to the ABS sensor and holding in the wheel spacers along with the chain installation whilst also struggling to lift the HEAVY rear wheel and line it all up at an angle to suit the leaning bike. Yes a bit of a trail stand challenge.

Of course, this way is, or was, always going to be more difficult with these circumstances. However, I decided that removing my centre stand was worth it for the weight saving and ground clearance improvement. So I invite you to watch and see how I get on.

RIDE WITH ME TRAIL STAND FOR ADVENTURE BIKES WITHOUT CENTRE STANDS

RIDER GUIDER 2023-03-12 | I removed the centre stand from my Yamaha Tenere 700 to save weight. Instead I bought a trail stand from 'Ride With Me' in Western Australia. This lightweight, well designed stand is easy to transport and use, allowing me to remove both my front or rear wheel on a ride to carry out repairs. It weighs just 350 grams compared to around 5kgs for the Yamaha factory centre stand. In this video, I show you the stand in detail, and then put it in action, showing how I can use it to lift the front and rear wheels even on a 200+ kg adventure bike like mine.

Yamaha Tenere 700 Full Decat Exhaust System Dyno Gains

One of the things I've added to my #yamahatenere700 is a full exhaust system.

To get the best from the system and to ensure my engine was being fueled correctly I decided to take it for a #dynotest and an #ecuflash . I took it to a local (ish) motorcycle tuner, Neville Lush Racing nevillelushracing.com who gave it the works.

In this video I explain the gains we have made, Neville by doing the actual tune and me by paying for it :-) ... By using the BHP & torque graphs I show how I interpret them and use that new knowledge to help me get the best from the tune when actually in the saddle riding the bike. I then do exactly that in real time by taking you all on a ride, on bitumen and a trail, with (to me) a surprising result, a decent improvement in the throttle smoothness.

BMW G310GS G310R IMPROVE THE REAR BRAKE

RIDER GUIDER 2023-01-16 | Following up the gear lever adjustment we're now looking to improve the feel of the BMW G310GS back brake. #mrsriderguider (Chantal) isn't happy with its performance and finds it's not keen enough at all, after riding it myself I'm in total agreement. There's not much adjustment available other than upgrading the brake pads to a more suitable material to improve the feel, but first we need to fit a pedal enlarger which will improve the span a little and reduce the angle she has to press the pedal to get it to bite. On the back of #mrsriderguider explaining to me that she feels she needs some extra practice, and extra know how in regards to negotiating bends, and how to make her motorbike turn, I decided to make some cornering content.

This is mainly to help newer riders understand some of the better techniques for turning their bike and increasing confidence in the bends. However, it may well be very useful information and a reminder to people who are coming back to biking after a break or a refresher for more experienced riders. RIDER GUIDER 2022-12-03 | This is part three of my four-part review of the Antigravity lithium-ion battery that I have installed to my Yamaha Tenere 700.

After my initial video at the beginning of 2022 explaining the features and benefits of the product, I followed up with part two, in which I was able to show how the #restart feature activated after a parasitic drain lowered the voltage of the battery. Part two was in fact viewed by the team at Antigravity in the USA and I was contacted by Scott Shafer who is the owner and president of the company. He offered some great input and information that any person who uses their batteries will find not only useful but critically important to get the most out of these unique batteries. This information adds to the importance of considering getting one of these if you head into remote areas with your motorcycle or recreational vehicle.

YAMAHA TENERE 700 FULL EXHAUST SYSTEM UPGRADE, SHOW, AND TEST.

RIDER GUIDER 2022-11-12 | In my quest to lower the weight of my Tenere 700 I've fitted a full exhaust system upgrade.
I've used the 2.1 kilo Akrapovic header, the Camel ADV enduro bend connector, and then finished it off with the beautiful Scorpion Red Power slip-on end can. These alone reducing the weight of my T7 by six kilos! In this video I'll show you around the bike, how it looks, of course how it sounds (as much as a video will allow), and of course maybe a little road test and 'fly-by' plus a quick chat on what's next for the Rider Guider #T7.

This is not an install video, this was not that difficult to fit with some basic mechanic tools on hand, 60 - 120 mins however if you have any questions on fitting please ask or comment and I'll be more than happy to give my advice.

YAMAHA TENERE 700 WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING ACCESSORIES

RIDER GUIDER 2022-10-30 | I was no different to almost every other Yamaha T7 owner when I bought it ... I followed up the bike purchase by adding every possible accessory and in my opinion it completely changed the factory feel. After two years, here is my ownership experience and what I'm now doing to rectify the issues I've created. I'm now removing or changing the parts and accessories I added, with the intention of getting the weight back down to where it was, so I can get the bike back to where it should be in the handling, a lithe athletic 700 cc off road weapon that I can also use for longer rides. Not a heavy lump that feels like it's restricting my off road ability. Check out what I removed, and also what I swapped for lighter alternatives in my quest to reduce my carb laden fat T7!

#MRSRDERGUIDER has got her new #bmwg310gs - here's how we adjusted the height and gear lever to suit her geometry.
She's found it a little tall and we decided to share how we dealt with the issue by fitting a lowering link at the rear and dropping the forks through the triple clamps, we also adjusted the gear lever to improve the ergonomics for her even more.

YAMAHA TENERE 700 FULL TANK TO EMPTY ROAD TEST

RIDER GUIDER 2022-08-05 | So many people have fuel anxiety with the #YAMAHATENERE700 ... in my day I'd be happy to get 170 miles out of a Sunday thrash on my Honda CBR600, although that was a time of much larger gonads. The #T7 is of course a #dualsportadv bike and fuel capacity is a serious issue if you're between servos. I've had fuel anxiety when I felt I was in the middle of nowhere, I'd have been much more at ease had I known exactly how much I had left in the tank. Well here's a definitive answer, and I can tell you now, it rarely varies when I take in to consideration the differing terrain I ride. Off road, suburb commutes and freeway speeds are where I am regularly venturing. In this video I'm very close to empty and have my #ROTOPAX on board so I'm able to run dry and answer the question on every #TENERE700 owners lips, definitively ... how far can you go? Do you get a splutter warning? Can you stretch it that bit further?

T7 owners ... what's your record on a full standard 16 litre tank?

Yamaha XT250 - is it powerful enough for soft sand uphill?

RIDER GUIDER 2022-07-27 | After discovering a local sand track ( see part 1 here - youtu.be/YS2rJ3DIsUY ) we decided to try our little Yamaha XT250 and see if we could make it through. This is a well used and at times steep soft 4X4 track with deep dips dug out by the four wheeled brigade so there was no real benefit of getting up much speed so I had to hope there was enough power to ride out of the soft sections. How did it go? Well I think it proves the XT can manage due to the fact it's light enough to manhandle but with the standard 'old school' suspension, I didn't have the confidence to hit this section at high speed, I'd have been thrown off for sure. I just had to keep a low gear and go the best I could for the conditions. What it does prove though is that the XT250 can in fact be used as an adventure bike, it still got through and ultimately adventure riding is just getting to your destination. It will always do that. Next up will be the T7! Four times the power, heavier but with more modern suspension and maybe I can attack it differently and just blast through!

There are two places you can take your test with Rider Safe, Murray Bridge and St.Agnes in Adelaide. We travelled out to Murray Bridge.

In this video I'll explain what you can expect to do when you take the course, what you'll need to practice before you even attend and give you an explanation of the final assessment.

I'm delighted to say I managed to get through and came away with my 'R-Date' licence so can now remove my L plate. I promised myself a new bike once I passed, that is now ordered and will be on its way very soon. There will be a video of that when it comes of course.

I've been wearing the excellent Forma 'Adventure' boot for my commuting AND weekend fun and games. However as the terrain becomes more technical, I'm asking are they up to the job and should I be upping my foot/ankle protection if I'm upping the risk? I've researched the options and come up with what I think is probably the 'absolute go to' footwear for motorcycle adventure riding or hard enduro riding. The benefits of moving from my Forma boots to Alpinestars Tech7 Drystar. How they feel, are they easy to use, and most importantly are they actually, as claimed, waterproof!? I give the Drystar a thorough soaking with two days adventure riding in the South Australian Riverland on my Tenere 700. This leads to my experience with the not so great Alpinestar Drystar gloves which were so poor I nearly boycotted Alpinestar altogether.

As much as I am a Quad Lock fanboy I'm hoping my feedback will make a great product even better, or maybe they can quickly make a second version of the NEW WATERPROOF 12V TO USB SMART ADAPTOR, because it looks like I've found an issue where this version won't suit everyone.
Here's my honest unpaid review of their quite splendid yet slightly flawed product. They might have to consider developing a new version already. Watch this to find out why it won't work for everyone, unless they change something up.
