I’m going to share a book I didn’t like. I DO NOT like to be SCARED and this book scared me. It’s got dead bodies and creatures under the bed, homicidal pets and creepy babysitting jobs. I hated it. But I know that some people LOVE to be SCARED. And so, because this channel is for YOU and not ME, I’m sharing it. You’re welcome. I’ll probably have nightmares after reading half this book just to find ONE short story I was willing to share out loud!
HEY TEACHERS - The Amazon reviews RAVE about this book and how reluctant readers and horror fans alike devour it. So I’m probably the only wuss who thinks it’s too disturbing and scary. That being said, maybe read a few yourself before using this First Chapter Friday and putting it on your shelf. You know your school district climate and students best.
Book Blurb: How scared can you get in just thirty seconds? Dive into the shortest, scariest stories ever created, with more than seventy instant thrills from the likes of Lemony Snicket, James Patterson, Neil Gaiman, R.L. Stine, Holly Black, Brett Helquist, and Margaret Atwood. You’ll never look at your closet door, your cat, your sock drawer, or even yourself in the mirror the same way again!
Grab your copy of Half Minute Horrors from your school or classroom library or if you can’t find it there, order it from Alex at my favorite indie bookstore: Birdy’s Bookstore. birdysbookstore.com/. It is also available for purchase on Amazon → amzn.to/4dMYqua

This compelling story addresses the serious topics of anorexia and self-expression as a vital act of survival. As you watch and listen, play along and discover the mystery quote hiding throughout the video, one… word… at… a… time!
Blurb: Jake volunteers at a nursing home because he likes helping people. He likes skating and singing, playing Bingo and Name That Tune, and reading mysteries and comics aloud to his teachers. He also likes avoiding people his own age . . . and the cruelty of mirrors . . . and food. Jake has read about kids like him in books—the weird one, the outsider—and would do anything not to be that kid, including shrink himself down to nothing. But the less he eats, the bigger he feels. How long can Jake punish himself before he truly disappears? A fictionalized account of the author’s experiences and emotions living in residential treatment facilities as a young teen with an eating disorder, Louder than Hunger is a triumph of raw honesty. With a deeply personal afterword for context, this much-anticipated verse novel is a powerful model for muffling the destructive voices inside, managing and articulating pain, and embracing self-acceptance, support, and love.

Make sure you stay through the whole video so you can listen to the author interview with Kate O’Shaughnessy and also discover the mystery quote hidden throughout… one word at a time, like a literary treasure hunt.
Blurb: Twelve-year-old Fern believes she's living a noble life--but what if everything she's been told is a lie? This is a huge-hearted story about a girl learning to question everything—and to trust in herself. Fern’s lived at the Ranch, an off-the-grid, sustainable community in upstate New York, since she was six. The work is hard, but Fern admires the Ranch's leader, Dr. Ben. So when Fern’s mother sneaks them away in the middle of the night and says Dr. Ben is dangerous, Fern doesn't believe it. She wants desperately to go back, but her mom just keeps driving. Suddenly thrust into the treacherous, toxic, outside world, Fern thinks only about how to get home again. She has a plan, but it will take time. As that time goes by, though, Fern realizes there are things she will miss from this place—the library, a friend from school, the ocean—and there are things she learned at the Ranch that are just...not true. Now Fern will have to decide. How much is she willing to give up to return to the Ranch? Should she trust Dr. Ben’s vision for her life? Or listen to the growing feeling that she can live by her own rules?

Xan rescues the children and delivers them to welcoming families on the other side of the forest, nourishing the babies with starlight on the journey. As Luna’s thirteenth birthday approaches, her magic begins to emerge—with dangerous consequences. Meanwhile, a young man from the Protectorate is determined to free his people by killing the witch. Snowed in together at a chaotic Washington D.C. airport, they encounter a mysterious tattooed man, a flamboyant politician, and a rambunctious poodle named for an ancient king. Even stranger, news stations everywhere have announced that the famous flag that inspired "The Star-Spangled Banner" has been stolen! Anna, certain that the culprits must be snowed in too, recruits Henry and José to help catch the thieves and bring them to justice. But when accusations start flying, they soon realize there's more than justice at stake. As the snow starts clearing, Anna, José, and Henry find themselves in a race against time (and the weather!) to prevent the loss of an American treasure.

Blurb: Bobby Phillips is an average fifteen-year-old-boy. Until the morning he wakes up and can't see himself in the mirror. Not blind, not dreaming-Bobby is just plain invisible. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to Bobby's new condition; even his dad the physicist can't figure it out. For Bobby that means no school, no friends, no life. He's a missing person. Then he meets Alicia. She's blind, and Bobby can't resist talking to her, trusting her. But people are starting to wonder where Bobby is. Bobby knows that his invisibility could have dangerous consequences for his family and that time is running out. He has to find out how to be seen again-before it's too late. If you are looking for a book that can be both entertaining and a way to guide you through handling a bullying situation, specifically one with nasty name calling, this one is perfect. In my opinion, this is a must read for all middle schoolers and those who have middle schoolers in their lives.

Blurb: Kids who get called the worst names oftentimes find each other. That's how it was with us. Skeezie Tookis and Addie Carle and Joe Bunch and me. We call ourselves the Gang of Five, but there are only four of us. We do it to keep people on their toes. Make 'em wonder. Or maybe we do it because we figure that there's one more kid out there who's going to need a gang to be a part of. A misfit, like us. Skeezie, Addie, Joe, and Bobby -- they've been friends forever. They laugh together, have lunch together, and get together once a week at the Candy Kitchen to eat ice cream and talk about important issues. Life isn't always fair, but at least they have each other -- and all they really want to do is survive the seventh grade. That turns out to be more of a challenge than any of them had anticipated. Starting with Addie's refusal to say the Pledge of Allegiance and her insistence on creating a new political party to run for student council, the Gang of Five is in for the ride of their lives. Along the way they will learn about politics and popularity, love and loss, and what it means to be a misfit. After years of getting by, they are given the chance to stand up and be seen -- not as the one-word jokes their classmates have tried to reduce them to, but as the full, complicated human beings they are just beginning to discover they truly are.

And now that it’s here, it did NOT disappoint. If you loved riding along with spunky Coyote and her dad, Rodeo, in The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise... as they traveled in their bus-house… tailing along for all of their adventures and the people they met… you are going to love this companion novel, Coyote Lost and Found, too. After I tell you why I loved it so much and read you chapter 1, listen in as we get the chance to chat with the author, Dan Gemeinhart, about the numerous places he’s lived, his writing process, and more!
Book Blurb: From #1 New York Times-bestselling author Dan Gemeinhart comes a standalone companion to the critically-acclaimed The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise about a father and daughter who venture on a moving, uplifting, and rollicking cross-country road trip. An Instant New York Times bestseller! It's been almost a year since Coyote and her dad left the road behind and settled down in a small Oregon town. . . time spent grieving the loss of her mom and sisters and trying to fit in at school. But just as life is becoming a new version of normal, Coyote discovers a box containing her mom’s ashes. And she thinks she might finally be ready to say goodbye. So Coyote and her dad gear up for an epic cross-country road trip to scatter the ashes at her mom’s chosen resting place. The only problem? Coyote has no idea where that resting place is―and the secret’s hidden in a book that Coyote mistakenly sold last year, somewhere in the country. Now, it’s up to Coyote to track down the treasured book . . . without her dad ever finding out that it’s lost. It’s time to fire up their trusty bus, Yager, pick up some old friends, discover some new ones, and hit the road on another unforgettable adventure.

Unexpected friendships, a mystery, a middle school setting… there is truly a little bit of something for EVERYONE in this book Side note: it would be the perfect classroom library addition for an English/Spanish ESL classroom!

And they're stuck together when they're forced to complete their school's community service hours. Although they're sure they have nothing in common with one another, some people see them as all the same . . . just five Spanish-speaking kids. Then they meet someone who truly needs their help, and they must decide whether they are each willing to expose their own secrets to help . . . or if remaining invisible is the only way to survive middle school. With text in English and Spanish, Invisible features a groundbreaking format paired with an engaging, accessible, and relatable storyline. If you are heading to middle school for the first time, have an intense sibling rivalry in your household, love the sport of fencing or are a fan of graphic novels, this book is perfect for you!
Book Blurb: A rivalry between sisters culminates in a fencing duel in this funny and emotional debut graphic novel sure to appeal to readers of Raina Telgemeier and Shannon Hale. Sixth grader Lucy loves fantasy novels and is brand-new to middle school. GiGi is the undisputed queen bee of eighth grade (as well as everything else she does). They’ve only got one thing in common: fencing. Oh, and they’re sisters. They never got along super well, but ever since their dad died, it seems like they’re always at each other’s throats. When GiGi humiliates Lucy in the cafeteria on the first day of school, Lucy snaps and challenges GiGi to a duel with high sisterly stakes. If GiGi wins, Lucy promises to stay out of GiGi’s way; if Lucy wins, GiGi will stop teasing Lucy for good. But after their scene in the cafeteria, both girls are on thin ice with the principal and their mom. Lucy stopped practicing fencing after their fencer dad died and will have to get back to fighting form in secret or she’ll be in big trouble. And GiGi must behave perfectly or risk getting kicked off the fencing team. As the clock ticks down to the girls’ fencing bout, the anticipation grows. Their school is divided into GiGi and Lucy factions, complete with t-shirts declaring kids’ allegiances. Both sisters are determined to triumph. But will winning the duel mean fracturing their family even further?

Tang. This book does a wonderful job of giving a close up view of the life of someone who immigrates to America. A real “windows and mirrors” opportunity for both readers born in the US and those who move here. Needless to say, because you are finding it on my channel, I loved it and think you will too! So let’s dive in! :)
Book Blurb: A DREAM TRIP TO AMERICA TURNS INTO A NIGHTMARE! Feng-Li can’t wait to discover America with her family! But after an action-packed vacation, her parents deliver shocking news: They are returning to Taiwan and leaving Feng-Li and her older siblings in California on their own. Suddenly, the three kids must fend for themselves in a strange new world―and get along. Starting a new school, learning a new language, and trying to make new friends while managing a household is hard enough, but Bro and Sis’s constant bickering makes everything worse. Thankfully, there are some hilarious moments to balance the stress and loneliness. But as tensions escalate―and all three kids get tangled in a web of bad choices―can Feng-Li keep her family together?

The Wall Street Journal said, “This superb and exciting work of nonfiction would be a fine tonic for any jaded adolescent who thinks history is 'boring.' It's also an excellent primer for adult readers who may have forgotten, or never learned, the remarkable story of how nuclear weaponry was first imagined, invented and deployed―and of how an international arms race began well before there was such a thing as an atomic bomb.” And I couldn’t agree more. This book sucked me in and didn’t let go until the very end… and even then I wanted more. If you are looking for an exciting, edge of your seat book that involves danger, treachery, science, history, political drama, and behind the scenes facts about events that shaped our world… this is the book for you!
Book Blurb: In December of 1938, a chemist in a German laboratory made a shocking discovery: When placed next to radioactive material, a Uranium atom split in two. That simple discovery launched a scientific race that spanned three continents. In Great Britain and the United States, Soviet spies worked their way into the scientific community; in Norway, a commando force slipped behind enemy lines to attack German heavy-water manufacturing; and deep in the desert, one brilliant group of scientists, led by "father of the atomic bomb" J. Robert Oppenheimer, was hidden away at a remote site at Los Alamos. This is the story of the plotting, the risk-taking, the deceit, and genius that created the world's most formidable weapon. This is the story of the atomic bomb.
Accessible, gripping, and educational, this new edition of Bomb is perfect for young readers and adults alike. A riveting graphic novel adaptation of the award-winning nonfiction book, Bomb―the fascinating and frightening true story of the creation behind the most destructive force that birthed the arms race and the Cold War.

If you are looking for a coming of age story about a girl with a unique living situation, this is the book for you. Hitch a ride with eleven-year-old Hazmat and her dad in their eighteen-wheeler, Leonardo, for a feel-good road trip across America that keeps on trucking!
Book Blurb: Life on the road with Daddy is as good as it gets for Hazmat. Together, they’ve been taking jobs and crisscrossing the US for years. Now Daddy’s talking about putting down roots— somewhere Hazmat can go to a real school and make friends. Somewhere Daddy doesn’t have to mail-order textbooks about “nature’s promise to all women.” Somewhere Mom’s ashes can rest on a mantel and not on a dashboard. While everything just keeps changing, sometimes in ways she can’t control, Hazmat isn’t ready to give up the freedom of long-distance hauling. Sure the road is filled with surprises, from plane crashes and robo trucks, to runaway hitchhikers and abandoned babies, but that all makes for great stories! So Hazmat hatches a plan to make sure Daddy’s dream never becomes a reality. Because there’s only one place Hazmat belongs: in the navigator’s seat, right next to Daddy, with the whole country flying by and each day different from the last. Award-winning author Louise Hawes writes with an easy, conversational voice and an “I’ll never grow up” spirit that cheerfully thumbs its nose at traditional coming-of-age narratives. This heart-tugging, laugh-out-loud portrait of a father and daughter is a satisfying journey across modern America you won’t want to miss.
Grab your copy of Big Rig from your school or classroom library or if you can’t find it there, order it from Alex at my favorite indie bookstore: Birdy’s Bookstore. birdysbookstore.com/. It is also available for purchase on Amazon → amzn.to/3RTOZkK

This nonfiction book shared facts, events and cultural details in an interesting and easy to digest format. If you like reading stories about kids who overcome challenges, learning about foreign countries, or exploring uncharted territories, you are going to love this book!
Book Blurb: A unique account of the amazing Thai cave rescue told in a heart-racing, you-are-there style that blends suspense, science, and cultural insight. On June 23, 2018, twelve young players of the Wild Boars soccer team and their coach enter a cave in northern Thailand seeking an afternoon’s adventure. But when they turn to leave, rising floodwaters block their path out. The boys are trapped! Before long, news of the missing team spreads, launching a seventeen-day rescue operation involving thousands of rescuers from around the globe. As the world sits vigil, people begin to wonder: how long can a group of ordinary kids survive in complete darkness, with no food or clean water? Luckily, the Wild Boars are a very extraordinary "ordinary" group. Combining first hand interviews of rescue workers with in-depth science and details of the region's culture and religion, author Christina Soontornvat—who was visiting family in Northern Thailand when the Wild Boars went missing—masterfully shows how both the complex engineering operation above ground and the mental struggles of the thirteen young people below proved critical in the life-or-death mission. Meticulously researched, this page-turner includes an author’s note describing her experience meeting the team, detailed source notes, and a bibliography to fully immerse readers in the most ambitious cave rescue in history.

This might be my favorite book of 2024 (at least, so far)! I don’t like to be scared… but this survival story had me on the edge of my seat from page one until the very end! Plus, I’ve been interested in caves and ancient civilizations since I was a kid, so this book sucked me in real quick! If you like field trips, classrooms full of unique kids, mysteries, strange environments, bioluminescence, science, adventure, and, and, and… you are going to LOVE this book. The best way I think I can describe this book is like if the book Hatchet happened to an 8th grade class on Avatar’s Pandora while on a field trip with the Magic School bus’s Ms. Frizzle. Have I hooked you? Great. Listen in!
QUICK NOTE - The video says there is a mystery quote... but there is not. I'm not sure how the error occurred, but I can't add it in now that the video is posted and don't want to mess people up by changing the link with a new upload. Forgive me pretty please!!
Book Blurb: Mr. Baker’s eighth grade class thought they were in for a normal field trip to Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico. But when an earthquake hits, their field trip takes a terrifying turn. The students are plunged into an underground lake…and their teacher goes missing. They have no choice but to try and make their way back above ground, even though no one can agree on the best course of action. The darkness brings out everyone’s true self. Supplies dwindle and tensions mount. Pretty and popular Silvia does everything she can to hide her panic attacks, even as she tries to step up and be a leader. But the longer she’s underground, the more frequent and debilitating they become. Meanwhile, Eric has always been a social no one, preferring to sit at the back of the class and spend evenings alone. Now, he finds himself separated from his class, totally by himself underground. That is, until he meets an unexpected stranger. Told from three different points of view, this fast-paced adventure novel explores how group dynamics change under dire circumstances. Do the students of Mr. Baker’s class really know each other at all? Or do they just think they do? It turns out, it’s hard to hide in the dark.

If you are interested in foreign countries, kids in tough situations, overcoming obstacles, close knit families, or journalism, then this book is PERFECT for you. As Amanda reads aloud, she will show the pages on screen, so you’ll be able to both see and hear this incredible true story.
Blurb: Muhammad Najem was only eight years old when the war in Syria began. He was thirteen when his beloved Baba, his father, was killed in a bombing while praying. By fifteen, Muhammad didn’t want to hide anymore—he wanted to act. He was determined to reveal what families like his were enduring in Syria: bombings by their own government and days hiding in dark underground shelters. Armed with the camera on his phone and the support of his family, he started reporting on the war using social media. He interviewed other kids like him to show what they hope for and dream about. More than anything, he did it to show that Syrian kids like his toddler brother and infant sister, are just like kids in any other country. Despite unimaginable loss, Muhammad was always determined to document the humanity of the Syrian people. Eventually, the world took notice. This tenderly illustrated graphic memoir is told by Muhammad himself along with CNN producer Nora Neus, who helped break Muhammad’s story and bring his family’s plight to an international audience.

If you are looking for a quick and funny book, this one will definitely be a hit. Make sure you stay through the whole video so you can discover the secret book quote hidden throughout… one word at a time, like a literary treasure hunt.
Blurb: Is Nick Allen a troublemaker? He really just likes to liven things up at school -- and he's always had plenty of great ideas. When Nick learns some interesting information about how words are created, suddenly he's got the inspiration for his best plan ever...the frindle. Who says a pen has to be called a pen? Why not call it a frindle? Things begin innocently enough as Nick gets his friends to use the new word. Then other people in town start saying frindle. Soon the school is in an uproar, and Nick has become a local hero. His teacher wants Nick to put an end to all this nonsense, but the funny thing is frindle doesn't belong to Nick anymore. The new word is spreading across the country, and there's nothing Nick can do to stop it. From bestselling and award-winning author Andrew Clements, a quirky, imaginative tale about creative thought and the power of words that will have readers inventing their own words.

If you like books that feature tough characters and tug on your heartstrings, you are going to LOVE this one. Make sure you stay through the whole video so you can discover the secret book quote hidden throughout… one word at a time, like a literary treasure hunt.
Personally, I’d recommend this book for 8th grade and up. There are a few swear words and some high school aged situations that involve drinking and physical relationships. Nothing graphic, but if you aren’t in 8th grade yet, you might want to wait on this one.
TEACHERS if you are showing this aloud in class and want to censor the swearing, I say the word “shit” at the 8:39 min mark and “hell” at 11:00. Despite these “warnings” this book is fantastic and I loved it with my whole heart. I hope you enjoy it too.
Blurb: Growing up in foster care, Muir has lived in many houses. And if she's learned one thing, it is to Pack. Light. Carry only what fits in a suitcase. Toothbrush? Yes. Socks? Yes. Emotional attachment to friends? Foster families? A boyfriend? Nope! There's no room for any additional baggage. Muir has just one year left before she ages out of the system. One year before she's free. One year to avoid anything - or anyone - that could get in her way. Then she meets Francine. And Kira. And Sean. And everything changes.

Total transparency. I'm recording this early... and as you listen, I am smack dab in the middle of a three day field trip with my 5th grader. We are at the same environmental learning center I took my students to when my own kids were babies and toddlers. It’s a fun, full circle moment to be able to go back. The forecast looks suspicious, so send us all the good weather vibes you’ve got and then read on for this edition’s line up of 5 GOOD THINGS for TEACHERS.
In this edition you’ll find: my Birthday Freebie update, the Nat Geo for Kids Website, First Chapter Friday Posters, a Spoons Review Game and online Shopping links.
Okay, that’s it. I hope that you have a good rest of your week and also that I managed to sneak my Diet Pepsi into the field trip. 3 Days without lattes and wine is sacrifice enough! To do it without ANY caffeine?!?!? Cruel and unusual punishment.
Until next time, teacher friends! - Amanda

Two kids, one fight. No one thinks they are wrong. I absolutely soared through this book and think middle grade readers will have the same experience. Fast paced, relatable characters, tense conflict. Listen in as I read chapter 1 and then get a copy for yourself so you can finish!
Blurb: Ebony and De’Kari (aka Flow) do not get along. How could they when their cafeteria scuffle ended with De'Kari's ruined shoes, Ebony on the ground, and both of them with ten days of at-home suspension? Now Eb and Flow have two weeks to think about and explain their behavior—to their families, to each other, and ultimately to themselves. Award-winning author Kelly J. Baptist delivers a novel in verse that follows Eb and Flow as they navigate their parallel lives. Single-parent homes, tight funds, and sibling dynamics provide a balancing act for the growing tweens. And whether they realize it or not, these two have a lot more in common than they think.

Based on true events from WWII, this story will suck you in and keep you quickly turning the pages! So, listen in as I, Amanda Zieba the Word Nerd, read you Enemies of the Orchard by Dana Vanderlugt.
Blurb: It’s October 1944, and while Claire’s older brother, Danny, is off fighting in World War II, her dad hires a group of German POWs to help with the apple harvest on their farm. Claire wants nothing to do with the enemies in the orchard, until she meets soft-spoken, hardworking Karl. Could she possibly have something in common with a German soldier? Karl, meanwhile, grapples with his role in the war as he realizes how many lies Hitler’s regime has spread—and his complacency in not standing up against them. But his encounters with Claire give him hope that he can change and become the person he wants to be. Inspired by the little-known history of POW labor camps in the United States, this lyrical verse novel is told in alternating first-person poems by two young people on opposite sides of the war. Against a vivid backdrop of home front tensions and daily life, intimate entries reveal Claire’s and Karl's hopes and struggles, and their growing friendship even as the war rages on. What are their chances of connection, of redemption, of peace?
