Pet rats are even illegal in certain parts of the world, including the Canadian province of Alberta. To this day, rats are still vilified in popular media. In the famous novel 1984 by George Orwell, Rats are even described as the ‘worst thing in the world’. The truth is, rats make amazing pets, and definitely are not the sewer monsters everyone thinks they are. Domesticated pet rats have been bred to the point where a domesticated pet rat is to a wild rat what a domesticated pet dog is to a wolf. They are adorable, loving, cuddly and very intelligent. Some owners in the rat community even refer to them as miniature dogs or pocket puppies. Each rat has a distinguishable personality. For example, some are shy, some are very sociable. Certain rats love being handled and other rats hate it. They are extremely clean animals, regularly grooming themselves and each other. Rats are known for their problem-solving skills, and can even be trained to do many incredible tricks (check Shadow the Rats videos on YouTube, she trains her rats to do some insane stuff). Last deactivated in 1948.Current Status: The site is undeveloped town property accessible by footpaths at the east end of Amber Street or Church Street. The site contains the remains of the fire control station, two concrete gun emplacements and three searchlight shelters. All of the concrete structures are damaged and covered with grafitti.
