The music that plays in Port Sarim, arranged on Super Mario Paint.
I did something I haven't done before for this video in order to include triplets and sixteenth notes in the same measure without using a very fast tempo. I recorded 2 instances of Mario Paint and edited them to play at the same time, with a chroma key effect on the staff background so you can see both at once. I think it's better than using a file that is playing so fast that you cannot follow the notes as they go by, but let me know what you think.
I always found it difficult to take a lot of this game's soundtrack seriously because it uses many of the same samples as Mario Paint. Oh well, that just makes it easier to arrange the songs as accurately as possible!

I used the Unfungames original soundfont for this video instead of the Mario Paint Mochi soundfont, only because I couldn't get the Mochi one to work on my version of the software. It will be or has been updated to work though if I use this again. I'll admit I was a little rushed for this video because I wanted to get it out before the New Year, but I still think it came out okay.
I think it's weird that my favorite song in Mother 3's soundtrack was this: a song that only plays once during a short, non-climactic scene. I think it's because I got a nice Professor Layton vibe from it.

Katawa Shoujo is a free visual novel by Four Leaf Studios. It follows the story of a high school boy who has a heart attack due to arrhythmia. After four months of hospitalization, he has to continue his education at a high school for disabled students. In order to put his life back together, he develops a relationship with one of the other students, learning more about both them and himself in the process. It's a very respectful and touching story that I'd recommend to anyone who likes a heartwarming tale.
This is an original piece composed by "naruto" for the 2003 Famicompo. I decided to try my hand at it and it was so much fun, more than I've had with MPC in a long time. Listen to the original here:
Tempo is 1200, but dips down to 900 for a brief moment so I can include triplets. It uses all instruments except the face. I could have stuck it in somewhere for fun, but I didn't feel like going against my original rearrangement for the sake of novelty. I omit the last part of the song because I thought it came to a better close where I ended it and the upcoming part didn't look very fun to work with.

The soundfont is Mario Paint Mochi, a high-quality original soundfont. My version of it doesn't have the 4 extra instruments, though I know versions that do have them exist. I'll probably be using this one from now on; I like it more than the one packed with the program. More info here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcfM6yu379M

Also there's a surprise at the end.
The funny thing is this video actually depicts a work in progress for me, but I hate previews so you won't be getting a real one.

If you have not yet tried Cave Story, DO IT NOW. It's a 100% free game for the PC. It resembles a cross between an 8-bit and 16-bit game. It's an action sidescroller platformer that anyone, but especially retro gamers, should love. The amount of polish on this game is amazing, from the visuals to the controls to the story to the astounding soundtrack. And most impressive of all, every single thing in the entire game was made from scratch by a single person over the course of 5 years. It's the only game I would honestly call completely perfect.
Click here and download the first 2 links (or I suppose only the first one if you're fluent in Japanese). Patch it to English and enjoy! (Yes, it's virus-free.)

I made this in a different program, called Advanced Mario Sequencer. Major differences from Mario Paint Composer include:
+ Scrolling playback, more like Mario Paint (the original one)
+ better file management system (actual documents, no text files)
+ 6 instrument limit
+ larger note range
+ easier soundfont management
+ does not add notes when minimized
- no scrolling with arrow keys
- no easy way to string text files
- Some bugs (Though it's still in Beta, and I'm sure it'll be fixed)
Well since I've spent so long talking about everything BUT the composing I'll keep this short. Basically, I was aiming for epic with low-tempo and original soundfont. I'll let my video do the most of the talking.

Hooray, it didn't take me a month to make a new song this time!
Here's another remake of an old Mario Paint song of mine. This time, I re-did the Obstacle Course or Athletic theme from Yoshi's Island.
I didn't re-do it because I thought my last one was terrible or anything, but because I liked the song so much that I wanted to do it again, this time with the original soundfont. Not to mention I noticed a few things that I DID mess up that I wanted to fix.
Besides the soundfont swap, some changes include:
- Different time signature (in MPC 3/4 now)
- Grace notes
- Better sustain (with Low-A glitch notes and echoes)
- Some instrument changes to better suit the soundfont (MEOW)
- I actually did the whole song
Looking at it this way, it doesn't seem like much changed. Oh well.
Thanks for watching!

You are allowed as many responses as you'd like, but from now on you may only post one that you uploaded before this video.
Sometime last night, I reached the 5000 subscriber mark! Thanks to every last one of you who helped me reached this milestone!
I apologise if the text moves too quickly, but I wanted to fit it in the song. I recommend not watching in fullscreen.
I made this video for a few reasons.
1. To thank my supporters and celebrate the milestone.
2. To initiate a collab.
If you have already watched the video, you know the general jist of the collab. I invite any and all Mario Paint Composers to upload a song that resembles something you would have seen 2 years ago. If you weren't there back then, this means that your entry should have:
No dickspeed, aka a low tempo song (I am hesitant to issue a tempo cap for the sake of faster songs with fast notes, so as a guideline instead please obey the 5-instrument limit)
The original, unmodified unfungames' soundfont
The 15 default instruments only
An overall simple presentation (just a recommendation)
I am doing this not only because I wish to celebrate my past, but because of the recent events involving people breaking away from or even quitting MPC because they don't see it as fun. I was one of those people, but as I made a song like this I really enjoyed it. There was no pressure or tedious work, just honest fun, and my goal is to inspire others to give this a shot so they can enjoy MPC again as well. Of course, anyone can participate in this without any kind of warning or permission.
Some tips you may want to follow:
If you think people will be very impressed by your piece because of how epic it is, you may want to go simpler.
If you are challenging yourself or the work is tedious, you may want to go simpler.
If you have the urge to make it sound just like the OST, replace it with the urge to make it sound like a Mario Paint tribute instead.
The arranger feature is acceptable.
Overall, just try to make it simple. Don't try to outdo yourself (I say this because I myself kept this mentality when I made my video, that you will probably want to check out).
Oh, and if you use Mario Paint Composer V1, you get a cookie.
Like I said in the video, this is not a contest. There is no winner, there is no voting, and there is no deadline. Please make your response(s) to this video so a viewer can easily find it all!
Good luck and have fun!
In regards to this video itself, I made it a bit in advance, so the lists at the end are slightly out of date. Sorry.
And wtf, YouTube. My subscribers used to be in order of subscription date. Now the list is randomly placed, incomplete, and even repeats some users onto different pages.
Oh well. Thanks again, everyone!Braid - Downstream on Mario Paint Composeraxelrod7772009-08-10 | Once again recorded by the master of awesome, Levus28.
http://www.youtube.com/Levus28
I started this video before I even was thinking about the 5k milestone video, and only out of boredom. It was only about the first few txt files long, had no bass or percussion, and was finished in less than an hour.
But it was so damn fun to make.
So I ended up finishing it while I worked the kinks out of my collab idea. This is the kind of thing I am looking for in the responses. Please note not only the original soundfont and low tempo, but the fact that I didn't worry about complete accuracy. My goal was to make it sound nice and recogniseable, not an OST clone with MPC instruments. Thus, the guitar is largely improvised, the dynamics are simple, and the bass sound isn't as legato as it should be.
I always wanted to do this song, but under the mentality that I should do it justice, I just cringed at the thought of the tedious work involved in the dickspeed I would have to use to get the dynamics right, not to mention a soundfont that I would probably have to custom-tailor to sound right. However, under the mentality that I wanted to enjoy making a remix of a song I like that sounds nice, this was very enjoyable.
I hope you can experience the same with your entry. Please make it a response to the same video this is responding to, but not this one.
And about the song itself...
I guess I should mention that in the first half of the song, I used sheet music with guitar tabs. I never worked with guitar tabs before, and I didn't know how when I started, so I probably did something wrong, but making it sound good was my goal, and at least I think I achieved it. Any file that begins with "O Son do Ar" I did completely by ear. I did not do the last part of the song because I don't like it as much as the first. It's a bit too repetitive and I imagine it wouldn't have worked as well as the first 2 parts under the limitations. The Yoshi in the beginning is slightly gimmicky, but I also wanted to somehow emulate the wolf howl in the beginning of the actual song.
Oh and if you haven't played Braid yet, do so. I wouldn't universally recommend any other game in the world above it.

First and foremost I would like to thank Levus28 for recording this video for me. My old computer wouldn't have been able to handle it and I can't get my new one to record sound.
My old and dedicated fans will recognise that I have already covered this song before long ago, in not only my early days but in the early days of Mario Paint Composer. The old one is pretty bad by today's standards, but I'm not ashamed because back then there weren't any standards.
This is my first epic project in a long time. Most of my recent videos were pretty simple, but this one I took full-throttle. In this video I make my first use of dickspeed throughout the whole song (yes, that is the official term among MPC users). I know some people admire my songs for being simple and would be put off by my using it, but I don't think it's too much of an issue as long as this is a remake of an old song that I did (and that it uses the original soundfont). My general consensus on the technique is that using it makes some things easier and gives a greater sense of freedom, but it takes a lot more time and concentration.
This song is very pecussive-heavy, which combined with the original soundfont can make for a possibly iffy-sounding percussion line, but I think I still made it work well. Using the freedoms of a high tempo I paid close attention to sustain and articulation and tried to incorporate dynamics (though I ended up only doing one significant contrast). I added grace notes and falls to try to match the OST, but I'm not sure they are completely accurate. I got a bit lazy with the instrumentation, especially near the end, but all in all I'm proud of this piece.
Let me know if you guys would like to see make more remakes of past songs that I've butchered.
Blah blah blah that's enough talking... or typing I guess. Or reading from your perspective. Gah just watch the video and leave a comment.RuneScape - Harmony and Flute Salad on Mario Paint Composeraxelrod7772009-04-11 | As promised, my first Mario Paint video in over 3 months is here!
Yay!
And. it's another half-assed RuneScape video!
Boo!
Yeah I'm sorry. I just haven't had much motivation to make a full-fledged, high-quality song in a while. Hopefully that will change with me having Spring Vacation this week. I made the first song a long time ago... probably about 2 months ago. I thought it was mediocre so I wasn't going to submit it, but at this point I'm desperate to upload something so here you are. I hope you like it anyway.
Since it is my first serious video in three months, I decided to whip up a second song to accompany the first. I decided to do a remake of my first RuneScape song, Flute Salad, so that it uses the same soundfont (Mario Paint Real 2.0) as my other two.
Harmony is likely the song a RuneScape player hears in the beginner town, Lumbridge, and is probably the most recognizable song from the game. Flute Salad can be heard East of Draynor I believe.
As for the future, I already have an original soundfont song in the works, but it's a very obscure and simple song so I'm not sure if it will make it to YouTube at all. We'll see how things go.
Wait... so if I have two half-assed songs, does that mean I have a full ass?
Bleh. I hate English figures of speech. Just watch and enjoy.Mario Paint Custom Soundfont: Wind SymPHONY (April Fools Day Prank)axelrod7772009-04-01 | APRIL FOOLS!
I spent about 6 hours making this prank on March 31. I replaced almost every instrument in a Mario Paint soundfont to some kind of Rick Roll and advertised it as a genuinely awesome soundfont. Rest assured that lulz were had.
Old Description:
For those who dont want to read all the crap I wrote, download the soundfont here:
So its not upside down, remove &flip=1 from the url.
Im sorry I havent made a video in so long, but mostly a lack of motivation has kept me from working too much on Mario Paint. I made a song (sort of) that I dont think is really up to my standards, but at this point Im desperate to get anything out to you guys and Im sure youd appreciate it anyway. So expect to see a normal Mario Paint Composer video in about a week or so.
BUT! Today I have a special treat for you all. In my free time (which I havent had a lot of lately) I managed to jump on the soundfont bandwagon and make my own custom soundfont for Mario Paint Composer. The theme is wind symphony, inspired by the fact that Ive been playing in a symphonic band for almost half of my life now at my school. In it you will find many different wind instruments, from the clarinet (my instrument of choice, which I have noticed has seen neglect in many other soundfonts) to the euphonium.
At this point Im in a hurry just to get something out to you all, so this description and the accompanying video are pretty rushed. Ill include an instrument list later, but for now I think it would be fun just for my hardcore fans who I know will download this soundfont within the hour of this video being uploaded to find out the various instruments for themselves.
Im a noob when it comes to file sharing and soundfont making, so I hope to God that this link works for download and I apologize in advance for any inconvenience (thanks to Levus28 for some advice):
To get this soundfont to work, go to the folder that holds Mario Paint Composer (wherever it is on your computer) and copy the file named soundset3.sf2 somewhere else in case you ever want to use it again. Next, delete or move that file out of the Mario Paint Composer folder. Then copy my soundfont file into the folder and rename it soundset3.sf2. Load Mario Paint Composer and it should work!
The song in the video is the Gusty Garden theme from Super Mario Galaxy, and the song playing on the Mario Paint Composer is the version of Chocolate Rain that I used in my Chocolate Rain YouTube Poop.
I relied heavily on delaythepickups soundfont tutorial videos in the making of his soundfont. Check them out; they are very clear and easy to use.
