【GUMI English】 Say So (Doja Cat) 【Vocaloid Cover/Voicebank Test】 mckatherine 2022-12-01 | ...so what on earth is this? where have I been? It was on October of this year that I decided to do my first serious cover using an english voicebank, doing a song that I get hooked on every end of the year: Although I listen to a lot of "indie" music, this is one "mainstream" song that (I have to admit) is basically a masterpiece atleast from my point of view. I found that it had so much potential to be covered in different ways, so I did a more powerful cover with Meiko V3 back in 2020 and uploaded it to Soundcloud. But then I also wanted to do a cover that replicated the relaxed, dreamy and nostalgic atmosphere of the instrumental arrangement, while also keeping the phonetic rythm that the english lyrics had but the japanese ones lacked (I personally think the japanese lyrics are really well done though, it's just that the english ones fit in perfectly with the beat). That's how I came up with this cover. And, hey, as limited as english Vocaloid voicebanks are, also given the fact that GUMI's pronunciation is not perfect, I'm quite happy with the result! I got exactly the disco sound I was looking for all this time! Sure, the vocals are not as real sounding as in many other japanese covers I've made, but that's not really what I was going for on this occasion anyway! I also took the freedom to change some of the lyrics, not for the sake of censorship, but just because I thought they would match the style better... I also got inspired to draw something myself for the PV after more than a year of covers with recycled pictures and videos... This time I had to since the original music video is so well elaborated. I wanted to copy its aesthetics by drawing an "old-anime" stylized GUMI which was also fun to do! Unfortunately I was dealing with lots of exams too, so I had to postpone the upload of this video until I had free time, which is now! 【UTAU Release】 Sumuji Cheri 1.6 VCV - Fukujusou(福寿草) - 【DEMO Cover】 mckatherine 2022-09-17 | After 4 years of promises, finally, it's here...Yep, my UTAU still won't work correctly, and I'm still forced to use it with my locale not set to Japanese (which means the program is almost useless). But although this is not a very high-quality voicebank either, I want you to acknowledge how much it means that Sumuji Cheri VCV is finally a thing...I think some of you already know this, but unlike many other UTAU voicebanks, Cheri's whole existence is based solely on the few poorly recorded CV samples I was able to take when I was just turning 14. Even shortly after that (and to this day) I was NEVER able to recreate Cheri's voice again. There were many (and I mean many) attempts on recording new samples for all new kinds of voicebanks for her, but none of them came even close to the original sound. I could just record new versions of Cheri that sound more like my current voice and abandon that old CV voicebank, but there's something so special about the original tone: Cheri is a remainder of the naivety of a younger version of myself, and that's why she sounds so nostalgic and unique to me. I thought that such an innocent and sweet voice had too much potential to be simply wasted in a limited low-quality abandoned voicebank, so I did what other users did with other old CV voicebanks like Defoko: I edited all the samples (including unused takes) in Audacity to create VC transitions. The first step was Cheri 1.5, a CVVC conversion I released last year. This time, I took it to it's full potential and made an entire VCV voicebank as complete as remotely possible. This is formally THE most high-quality voicebank that it is possible to obtain only with the old, monopitch, low-quality original CV samples, and it's honestly a lot. A few years ago, the idea of a Cheri VCV voicebank that would actually sound like the original Cheri was pretty much impossible. It still may not sound 100% like a naturally recorded VCV, but it's the peak of the "1." line (that's how I call the series of voicebanks I made with the original Cheri samples). I also think that if you could use other resamplers other than the default UTAU resampler.dll you could even reduce the noise of the samples! Other than that, I'm quite proud of the final result! The fact that she is even close in quality to other voicebanks like Sukone Tei's is just amazing...Also, I made a logo for her!I kept the old image file for this voicebank too since it's from the "1." series that derives from the original version. If I ever get my UTAU to work correctly I may start recording new versions of Cheri with a new tone of voice, and that would be no longer from the "1." line.And why did I re-cover the same song I did last year? 【VY1V4】Lilium (Elfen Lied)【Test Vocaloid Cover】 mckatherine 2022-07-25 | Oh, don't mind this :SFor those who don't know it, this song is the opening theme of the anime Elfen Lied, and was made to match a classical style of music, being sung in Latin and originally performed by professional opera singer Kumiko Noma. I was a fan of this anime by the time I was discovering Vocaloid around 2016, and I always thought it would somehow match VY1. It was a popular song amongst the early Vocaloid community, so you can find lots of other covers, and almost none of them use an operatic style like the original does. So this is just a fun test to please that old wish I had years ago. Of course it's not made to match the original at all, I might play with VY1V4 to sound more or less dramatic, but the truth is she was not designed to sing opera, nor in Latin. The original version is unique in it's own way and totally worth listening to. Kumiko Noma's voice has a charm that no Vocaloid can replicate, it's so soothing that it sounds like it's directly calming your anxiety xD On the other hand, this is neither my best nor my most serious/ambitious work, I'm literally forcing a japanese voicebank to sing in Latin and in a genre it's not even supposed to be singing: Again, it's just a fun experiment. That's why I didn't upload it to Soundcloud.And no, this isn't the first time I cover a non-vocaloid song. Also, have in mind that I don't like doing anime openings or songs from series, since this channel is oriented only to music and I find that show/anime preferences are somehing much more personal and specific that not all of you share. 【GUMI Power】Its Been a Very Nice June/とても素敵な六月でした【Vocaloid Cover】 (VB Test) mckatherine 2022-02-26 | Hi again! Just uploading more videos while I can :) This cover might not be as heavily tuned and complex as that last Hikari Yo one I did, I'm just messing around with GUMI's Power VB to see what I can do with it.Why? Well, for being such a popular Vocaloid with SO MANY Voicebanks and such a nice timbre, GUMI almomst hasn't ever appeard in this channel (appart from being my top english singer for my originals). I only uploaded one cover in SoundCloud recently, and it got quite popular. So I thought I wasn't doing her justice like I did with other singers like VY1 and Kagamine Rin. And well, that was added to the fact that I really liked this song and that its original vocals were quite poor in comparison to the composition and instrumental... This isn't a masterpiece either, but you know, it's good to finally finish another project and being able to kick it out of your "ideas" folder into the "finished projects" one! After I finally posted that one heavy project of Hikari Yo with VY1 I got inspired to finish one more, and so you have this for the time!Now, talking about the voicebank, this might not be my best use of it, but it has quite a potential! I admit that I underestimated it in the past, thinking it was not as "powerful" as those soprano belting voicebanks that I loved (VY1, Rin, Una...), but using it on the right range can throw very natural results! 【Using my old CV UTAU VB】 Fukujusou/福寿草 Cover Test 【ft. Sumuji Cheri】 mckatherine 2021-04-01 | I'm not really into pranks and all of that April Fool's stuff, I just saw it as an opportunity to clarify all this UTAU mess and also for doing a fun challenge... Okay, let's get straight to the point: I finally got to change my HDD again (don't worry, I didn't break my computer again or anything, it was just an upgrade) and UTAU didn't work either. (For those of you who didn't read the community posts, the problem is that everytime that I wanted to install the program having the locale set to japanese, UTAU wouldn't run correctly: I couldn't play any notes, or register other voicebanks that weren't Dekoko, it didn't even let me save or open a .ust project!) Having this issue in two different HDDs makes me think the cause of this is something on the version of Windows I have. But the point is that I won't be able to install the program in any other computer, which meas that I won't be able to use UTAU correctly at all. And how did I do this cover? Well, the only way UTAU would run decently on my computer is WITHOUT the locale set to japanese, leaving me only with that gibberish version of the program that can only read a few voicebanks and has so many glitches that it's almost unusable (it doesn't read any sampler but the default resamplers, sometimes it doesn't render the .wav files correctly, etc...). BUT it's still something! Something enough to run super-basic romaji voicebanks like Cheri. So, am I going to stop using utau? I'll probably use Cheri and Teto (one of the few vcv's that happens to work on this version) just in some occasions, but I won't be able to use like 99% of all the vb's you can think of. I'll try to give my beautiful child (low-quality, choppy, yet lovely child) the attention she deserves too! I may not be able to record a super complex brand new voicebank for her, BUT I've figured out how to edit her samples so that I can make a CV-VC version out for her CV! The consonants of the samples are pretty long and I think she only sounds choppy because of the oto... About the cover, if you notice some of the "n" and "s" transitions are a little bit better than usual, that's because I've been working with the oto, but she's still a CV (that's why I think she could sound smoother if I edited her samples) Also, yes, I've done some changes in the design of her clothes if you ask...And why a silly cover with Cheri instead of something more serious with Teto? I don't know, I wanted to let you know I didn't forget about her... 【Sachiko】Piano × Forte × Scandal【Vocaloid Cover/VB Test】 +mp3/inst mckatherine 2021-03-15 | 💃💃💃 *insert disco ball here* 🕺🕺🕺(I'm sorry I love the funky version of this song so much it makes me want to dance)*WARNING* : This cover has a low quality instrumental and mixing. I hope you can tolerate that, and here's why: This cover was inspired on the live version of the Matsuri da Diva 2014 sung by Meiko Haigo (youtu.be/de1WvhhvX5w), which has a style and key that matches much better Sachiko than the original version. The original idea was to use an instrumental as similar as possible to the accompaniment of that live version, so tried to extract it with an AI of a website, and it worked surprisingly well, but it was in a really low quality and some parts had a very strong low pas filter, so I couldn't use just that. That's why I decided to mix it with some parts of the original instrumental so that it sounded decent. But there was another problem: the off vocal given by OSTER project had really strong backvocals, so I got the Project Diva instrumental (the second instrumental oster project did, this time without the backvocals) from a VSQx download, but it came in a low quality too, and as you can imagine that got even worse when I turned it 4 semitones down and changed the BPM from 135 to 132 to fit the live version: it got totally distorted and it was impossible to use it alone too. So I spent an entire day mixing both off-vocals, equalizing and alining each part for it to sound as good as possible and not like a Frankenstein made of different samples. It turned out pretty decent, but it had a lot of compression in some parts of the live version that made the mastering and mixing process really hard because if I used a little bit too much compression then the sound of the music would be totally destroyed. Although the track has a really low quality, I'm happy with the result given the circumstances, and I hope you can still enjoy it like I do! And just in case you need them, I'll give them both to you (my isntrumental and the original low quality live version instrumental) within the mp3 pack!(Thank you for reading the warning of the mixing, now I'll proceed to review my experience with Sachiko!) Finally I get to use for the first time one of the best and most complex Vocaloids ever! I knew Sachiko for a long time, and I also knew she was one of the most high-quality vb's, but I was too scared to actually try using her. Why? Well, because the company promoted her like a very professional Vocaloid only ment for SUPER experienced and skilful users, and I also heard a lot of people saying "do not use her if you do not know what you're doing". They were not wrong though, but I was afraid of not being prepared enough for such product and scrweing it up or not having time to learn enough about her and ending up wasting her potential. But at last I took the risk and decided to install the vb, and oh my were they right... She truly is one of the best, most realistic, most expressive and most outstanding vocaloids ever! I don't care anymore if the tuning here sounds weird (I'm sure I'll improve by using her more), I had a lot of fun with her (more than I had ever had in a long time) and she quickly became one of my favorite loids! She was actually much more easy to use than I expected! And one of the things I loved the most about her is that she has so many expressive effects in her samples that the rest of V4 vocaloids lack, like vocal fry, a lot of consonants with exaggerted aspiration sounds before the vowel, and super dramatic intonations that makes each sound unique! Even in the untuned vsqx you can still hear a passion in the notes that you just cannot hear in other vocaloids and I'm totally in love with that! It truly is one of Yamaha's or Sachiko's promotion company's best work. Even her demo sounds good in comparison to the rest of the demos! To give you a reference, comparing Sachiko to an average V4 Vb like Miku V4 is like comparing a VCV Multipitch VB to a Monopitch CV VB in Utau, and it still bothers me how people use her just like any other vocaloid with songs that don't fit her range. Also, as an alto myself, she's actually the only female vocaloid whose vocal range is very similar to mine, and that's why I know it's not a good idea to make her sing songs like Rolling Girl in the original key and octave... Oh, and as you can see I finally figured out how to apply the animation effects in aviutil to each letter for separate in the texts! 【Nekomura Iroha】戯言スピーカー(Tawagoto Speaker)【Cover】+mp3 (+subtitles) mckatherine 2021-02-21 | I know you might be expecting a good explanation for this just like in the SkyFish video. This is a really lazy cover with a lazy PV of a song that already has too many covers, but here are my reasons to upload it (appart from boredom):1) I wanted to re-make that old cover of this song with iroha. It was one of the worst in this channel and someone put it into the Vocaloid Wiki. It was such an embarrassment that I had to upload this to compensate that.2) I really wanted to start using Iroha V4. I mean Iroha, not Iroha Soft. There are a lot of people out there, maybe you've seen it too, all saying that Iroha Natural V4 is really bad in comparison to Iroha Soft, which is said to be much "nicer" and "smoother". And that's just a ruthless lie/myth. After a long while of being afraid of using it, I've discovered how far superior the Natural VB is to the Soft VB. But don't get me wrong, I do understand why some people may not like it: its pitch is really unstable, some transitions are really glitchy and it's one of the MOST COMPLICATED voicebanks ever to use (I still haven't mastered it) and it would be a nightmare for beginner users to tune, while Soft appears much more friendly and stable. And yeah, Soft can be a nice voicebank, but it's just at the level of others like Rin Warm/Sweet and many of the "soft/whispered" appends in vocaloid: They're easy to use, but dull and really unrealistic, and their tone is so generic that their voices become unrecognizable from the original Vocaloid VB. And yes, I know Natural is very glitchy, but as the name says it, it can be one of the most natural and realistic VBs in Vocaloid. It's low range is one of the richest and most human sounding I've ever heard in a synth. The falsetto samples, unlike MANY other vocaloids', actually SOUND like a natural falsetto from someone singing high notes instead of some mid-range notes artificially pitched-up. And while her mid-range is the most unstable when it comes to pitch, it has a lot of variety too. And all that complexity is what makes it so difficult to use at the same time, and that's why it might "appear" to sound bad if you don't tune it correctly. So I'll give it to you: I had the internal need to upload a VY1V4 cover of this song because 1) the song deserves it, 2) I wanted to upload a soft song for once to give this channel a little bit of diversity and "prove" that I can tune soft vocals (that's actually up to you, you'll be the one to judge if I did a decent work) and 3) because I also wanted to express my love to this song somewhere. (I understand if those excuses are not enough for you though) Can I just talk about how (amazingly) bizarre this song is for a moment? I knew this song before, but I never understood why it made people so emotional because I had only heard the first part and had no idea what the lyrics were. But recently I decided to actually listen to it completely and look up the lyrics and oh my... how little did I know, it became one of my favorites for many reasons. The melancholic tune goes extremely well with the meaning of the lyrics. But the magic of the song is the contrast between the theme and how it portrays it: You know it's all about death, the lyrics literally describe the process of passing away, yet the first part actually sounds a lot like a (really calm) lullaby, making it pretty weird already. And then the instrumental gets more and more melancholic towards the end, leaving you with a depressing feeling although the song never actually portrays it like something sad (it's a really weird feeling of hopelessness that could give the people going through difficult times some suicide thoughts... I mean the song doesn't make you want to die, I'm just describing the feeling, but it's ironic how that's exactly what the producer did a few years later unfortunately ...) Then I thought that a mature and calm voice like VY1's could make that effect a little bit stronger, and I think it actually kind of worked, and that's why I uploaded it!NOTE: I'm not trying to say having depression is "cool" at all. The reason why this song is so good is that it manages the theme in a really deep and complex way like no other song does. 【VY1V4】Bacterial Contamination (細菌汚染)【Cover】+mp3 mckatherine 2021-01-26 | Oh don't mind this, I'm just procrastinating from my upcoming song :) I know I said there would be no other uploads until the song was released, but the project took too long and I also had other things to do, so I decided to spend the little time I had on a lazy cover like this one and leave the song for later when I have more time and can actually focus on it. But still you might be thinking "wtf is this? it really had to be this song? and why VY1V4 again?? can't you use other vocaloids??" Well, as I said in my miki cover, doing an actual GOOD cover of this song was always one of the big goals since I got to use vocaloid. There are many reasons why I think this is one of the best Vocaloid songs ever created, and I could continue talking about how amazing the instrumental, the lyrics and the PV are, but one of the things that also called my attention is how unique the original vocals are (and how well they fit the song). I cannot understand how most of the covers (including the old one I did) tune the vocals (or sing them) just like they would do with any other song, while the original ones are not upposed to be "normal" (I don't mean those covers are bad, it's just weird to me that they all do that). There are many other songs with disturbing lyrics or music videos (like I'm sorry I'm sorry from Kikuo), but what I love from this one is the fact that not only the PV is creepy, but also THE MUSIC, and all of that without stopping the track from sounding awesome (It's actually ironic how everyone talks about the video being scary but never about the music, which I personally find even creepier than the pv itself) And that is mainly caused by the vocals! The combination of the effects on them and the manipulation of the GEN factor that makes them sound deeper creates that feeling of something being clearly wrong with the singer (sometimes it sound like she's making fun of you and sometimes it sounds like she's dying, or at least that's what I hear), and that added to the meaning of the song is just priceless. Now, I know these vocals sound much more natural and less creepy than the original, but at least I tried recreating that effect a little bit in some parts and mix it with my tuning, so take this as a remake/test from that crappy cover I did a year ago with miki. So why? Why would you do this? Who in their right mind asked for this? well... I did. This is entirely the result of a whimsical wish of mine. It's story time! : I've got to be honest with you: I don't necessairly LOVE WITH ALL MY HEART every single song I cover. There are some that I really love (Q, for example), and some others that I just see they could potentially sound good with a specific voicebank and would get views but are not my favourites. But this one was an exception. The moment I listened to it for the first time it automatically became one of my favourites on a time where I could't find a new vocaloid song that I really liked and was slowly going away from the community and the synths. Oh my, it had been a LONG WHILE since I didn't listen to such a good song for the first time and absolutely loved it. I remember back in my "vocaloid/utau noob" days when at least a quarter from all the songs I discovered were a "WOW, THIS SOUNDS SO GOOD, I LOVE IT AND WILL LISTEN TO IT ALL DAY!". The magic slowly faded away as I got more experienced in music and now I can't even remember the last time I added a song to my "Music I love" or "I will keep listening to this" playlist. So this song had a real impact on me! But what really caught my attention was not only how complex the rythm and the melody were, but also how the instrumental itself (while the song was supposed to be "happy") transmited a feeling of happiness but at the same time a lot sadness. I see it as if the song created a relaxing and dreamy but nostalgic atmosphere and I wanted to have a version that actually transmited that with the vocals because of how special this piece is to me. So I did something I had never done before: I always just insert the lyrics on the VSQx and then start tuning from the melody and then just throw it to the off vocal, but this time I tuned each part depending on how the instrumental sounded in each note. It's just that this song is so well composed that every single note of the piano transmits a different emotion, just like telling a story with music. Ok, some of you will think I'm just overdramatizing this song and that I'm just being selfish tuning it just the way I interpretate it (and how I like it) and not how the song is "supposed to be"... and you might be right! This cover was basicaly made for me and I even drew Rin more "child-like" laying on the grass to make the pv look more like a happy memory or a dream from the past which gives the singer the sadness of this song. The only reason why I uploaded it is that MAYBE there are more listeners that also like this different way of viewing the song, with a "deeper" meaning and not just the Miku drinking coffee while she's listening to the singing birds story...If you read that whole silly paragraph I really appreciate that! :)If you're wondering how this PV suddenly looks so smooth in comparison to m other videos, it's because I (again) did something I never did before: I did all the pv in one aviutl project and exported it into one big video instead of rendering first the composition, then the effects and then the lyrics in separate videos and I'm so happy this is my first aviutl not-laggy PV! I learned that Aviutl is really bad at processing already existing video files and that it will almost never render them correctly, so take that in mind!Also, I know there are some errors in the pronunciation (just like in other covers I did) That's because I always get the romaji from web sites and copy it into my VSQ. Just a new video after a half a year of not uploading content passing by... I hope you didn't forget about me. But if you eventually did, I'm McKatherine, I make music with synthesizers like Vocaloid and Utau since 2017, nice to meet you again! I can guess some of you will wonder what Miku is doing here. Yep, I ask myself that question too. But this is not Miku! It's Miku Solid/Vivid! Those are my favourite voicebanks from her. I know some people find them quite annoying, but they're the most realistic sounding ones! I never really liked Miku's original voice because of how monotone and dull she sounds. I swear the first time I listened to her voice I was shocked with disappointment: how could a vocaloid with such a creative design that appears to have so much personality sound so boring and unnaturally high pitched! Miku lacks (a lot of things, but most importantly...) what makes realistic sounding voicebanks sound as they do, which is the variety of tone colors that changes as they sing different notes. That is the main aspect I focus on when criticizing a voicebank. It doesn't only give the voice their personality but it also makes vocaloids like VY1 sound realistic EVEN BEFORE ADDING THE TUNING. At least Miku V2 had some little differences in tone in the samples, but with Miku V4 it seems like they didn't really try. But these two appends are a blessing for my ears after listening to the original voicebank. Vivid is in my opinion what Miku should have sounded like originally (high pitched, but with some voice color that makes her sound so human!) and Solid is the same but with the power and maturity she needed! (they complement each other very well!) That makes me wonder why they removed Vivid and Light from the appends pack! ...Now, I don't know if I used them properly... I also don't know if you read that entire paragraph. I'm sorry for the long critic, I had to put it somewhere xD About the cover, there are two things that were especially a total pain to do: the mixing and the minigun. I had so much trouble with the first one because FL studio had a lot of issues with the volume parameters and I spent 3 days trying to make it sound decent and this weird sounding thing came out... And with the minigun I had to get out of my comfort zone: I never really drew complicated guns (or that kind of mechanical stuff) in my life! It was my first attempt and if you know anything about guns you'll totally laugh at my picture. For example, I'm one of those users who add a "-" note almost before every syllable to make sure everything is on pitch, and that causes a really choppy sound in most of the V4 voicebanks. Rin Act2 still sounded smooth even if I added the shortest "rest" note that could possibly be made!Another thing that made me choose Rin V2 Act2 is how horrible Rin V4 sounds on her lower notes. I know most of you will not agree with me, but now I think Rin V2 Act 2 would be even better than Rin V4... WOULD BE, just because of one fact that it's how squeaky and nasal she sounds in her older voicebank. That gives, in my opinion, the both voicebanks almost the same queality. What I mean is I would have never thought of making a song about that!Seriously, I love its originality! :DI think the most difficult thing of this cover was to do the deep vocals! There are just a few UTAU and Vocaloids able to fit in those parts. Also, ChaCha's Breakthrough voicebank is really nice and underrated but one of her only issues is that her deepest pitch (A3, which is the one that I mostly used for the deep parts) is recorded with some kind of low frequencies that aren't at the higher pitches.That made it hard to mix the vocals with the song, but it was nothing that a good EQ couldn not fix! (or maybe I just hope so) And I won't lie, I had to edit a little bit the dynamic on the mixing!Other than that, I really recomend this voicebank! ChaCha's got the most realistic Utau voice by far! Her E5 pitch is unique! Although by the time I did it I DID know how dark the lyrics of the song were, I was mainly focused on the music, and I always believed the song's purpose was to spread awareness and/or share someone's traumatic experience with abuse. However, I didn't consider the fact that Una's character herself was depicted as a child in the present moment, and wasn't aware of the horrible connotation this version might have.
