The result is a 30 minute documentary about workers rights, and it will be coming out on this YouTube channel at some point in 2024. This documentary was about as solo a project as something can get. I did everything for this doc; directing, filming, editing, etc.. But even though it was just me, I wanted to make sure I was approaching things as professionally as possible. The story is driven by interviews with key members of the workers’ fight for a fair contract. I had about 10 hours of content from three days of interviews. This means I needed a solid process to sift through the terabytes of interviews and keep track of what everyone is saying.
In this video, I’ll break down how I approached this project and walk through some of the most important steps for getting oriented when starting such a massive project.
Shoutout to Joshua Kirk for publishing his video about how to organize and edit a documentary, it was hugely helpful when I was getting started with this project: youtube.com/watch?v=zA1qaQib4G0

#canonc70 #canonr5cFull frame vs. Super 35: You dont need a full frame camera for great video | Canon C70Brand New Extra Good2024-08-27 | The Canon C70 has a Super 35mm sensor, and it's great for video work. People might think they need a full-frame sensor, but it's not necessary. The upsides are not as great as camera manufacturers' marketing teams would have you think, and there are some advantages to having a smaller sensor.

I’ve been using this system for about ten months now, and it has become my go-to for capturing hands-off, high quality audio.
I first picked up the RODE Wireless Pro to film run-and-gun interviews at Labor Fest last year. Since then, I’ve put a lot of hours on these things, and I’ve learned a lot in the process. I’ve used it for the things I bought them for, but I’ve also been surprised by the use cases where I’ll reach for the Wireless Pro because it solves a problem better than another solution.
There are five main areas where I think the RODE Wireless Pro shines, and I’m going to go through them in this video.

Upon their contract’s expiration, the workers activated their dormant union and fought back against their employer - a massive financial services provider making record profits. Their fight dragged out for over 600 days and included the first strike in the company’s almost 100-year history, the largest labor action in Wisconsin for over ten years.

I’ve used the Shure SM58 for six years, logging several hundred hours recording podcasts and recording voice overs for videos. I love the SM58. Great mic. Indestructible, affordable, has a classic “microphone” look, and it sounds great. It has worked really well for me over the years. It’s a dynamic microphone, which means it’s really good at rejecting the sound of the room it’s in; just picking up what’s right in front of it. Crucially, it’s also not an SM7B. Everyone has one of those. Lately, though, I’ve wondered if I couldn’t upgrade my setup. But I don’t want to throw away my old friend without doing some tests first. I dug out all the microphones that I have and I’m just going to check in with them all.

Are you fighting your boss? Reach out! info@brandnewextragood.comIs Dehancer worth it? (Lightroom/Photoshop/Capture One/Affinity plugin)Brand New Extra Good2023-10-28 | I’m not looking at #dehancer as a shortcut to a trendy film look. I don’t want that. I’m using it to help me close the gap between where my photos are and where I want them to be. I think, for the most part, it does a good job of getting me there. It’s a thoughtfully-constructed, well-researched piece of software.
Dehancer operates as a standalone editor that has many film profiles and controls for emulating analog film with your digital photos. I haven’t shot with film before, but I really get the sense that a lot of time, effort, and science went into properly recreating these film stocks and development processes. It feels like the right amount of work on my end, too. It’s not some filter you just slap on top of #lightroom adjustments. You’re actually getting in there and adjusting black and white points, print paper, and lots of other controls.
I really like the balance of a proper workflow with space for creativity and experimentation in the Dehancer plugin. It feels like there are solid guardrails you can reliably follow to get good results every time, but there’s also space for you to go nuts on the sliders and come up with wild results if you want. I think this pocket is what ultimately sold me on the plugin, in addition to the possibilities that it opened up for me.
I think this plugin is going to make me better at #photography as a filmmaker - because now I know I can get good results. I’ll want to keep taking more photos. It’s exciting to develop them. Now I can finally get them to look how I wanted.

Thanks to everyone who watched anything I put out there in 2022.
This is a collection of clips I filmed over the course of this year. I often find myself compelled to hit record on my camera without having a story to tell in that moment; and end up with a hard drive full of footage I’ve ultimately categorized as “environmental” - unattached to any project.
I’ve noticed that I have a hard time remembering things. Maybe everybody does. Recording for a few seconds as nothing in particular is happening doesn’t help me with that, but these clips are like time capsules for exactly how I felt every time the camera was rolling.
It’s only now, once I’ve spent the time to dig through these clips from the last twelve months, that I’ve realized all of those moments are a story. My environment, if you want to call it that, has changed a great deal this year. This is a shape these images reveal by coloring just outside the lines; the story of moments between moments.
I’m going to keep filming these moments, dipping into the flow of time from time to time.Two-camera interview with a Canon R5 C and C70 | Equipment breakdown and reviewBrand New Extra Good2022-09-28 | I love filming with the Canon C70, and the R5 C is a perfect complement as a B-cam.
