Four months later, across town, 22-year-old Erin Gilmour returns home from work and is attacked the same way.
The women didn’t know each other, and both cases remained unsolved for decades. In 2000, DNA profiles from each crime proved their attacker was the same man – but didn’t reveal his identity.
It would take another 20 years, but thanks to genetic genealogy research, the killer was arrested, charged and convicted, bringing a measure of closure for the victims’ families.

In a later update, Peel Regional Police said one person was in life-threatening condition but did not specify who. A 16-year-old girl was taken to a trauma centre in Toronto, but her exact condition was unknown, paramedics said.

Chrystal Saunders was 24 when she went missing in Winnipeg in April 2007. The following day, her body was discovered 100 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg near St. Ambroise, Man. Nearly 17 years later, investigators charged 42-year-old Kevin Charles Queau, now living in the Vancouver area, with second-degree murder. Superintendent Rob Lasson said on Monday that Saunders' body was discovered by an off-duty RCMP officer, who had the training to preserve the scene and forensic evidence.
Advancements in DNA technology, police said, played a key role in the arrest and in linking Queau — whose DNA was in the national system due to previous criminal convictions — to the murder. Lasson said this case is an example of the exhaustive efforts RCMP investigators put into solving murders, but the good news of the arrest all these years later won’t bring the victim back.
“Crystal was a mother, a daughter and a friend to many that needlessly lost her life to violent crime. I want to express our sincere condolences to all of Crystal’s friends and family for your tragic loss. She was exploited and had issues with addictions. Unfortunately, Crystal was a vulnerable person and someone took advantage of that. We now have that person in custody,” Lasson said.

Crown prosecutors had argued in the original trial that after years of being the primary caregiver for the infant-like Cynara, Ali smothered her daughter with a pillow and then created an elaborate story about a home invasion at their Scarborough home to cover up her crime.
Ali’s defence lawyers had argued, however, that Cynara was cherished by her mother and died either after seizures that might have been triggered by the alleged home invasion, or from a lung infection, which she was known to be susceptible to.
In a courtroom full of Ali’s family, friends and supporters following a retrial on Friday, Ali was acquitted of the first-degree murder charge and found not guilty of manslaughter.
