Confrontation at the Barn (Warrior Cats Speedpaint Request) Arcatdia 2020-08-08 | Final Image Link: deviantart.com/arcatdia/art/Confrontation-at-the-Barn-851104372This was quite the challenge, and I apologize for the delay of this piece!If you know me, I constantly urge people to use photographic references when drawing. References honestly help make art better, and using photographs are much better than cartoons as (1) you really shouldn’t be referencing other art without the artist’s permission and (2) an artist’s style may not resemble perfect anatomy. Take my own style, for example: I make heads larger, and the features of the head (eyes and ears, mostly) are vastly exaggerated to help convey expressions.This was different. I have never done a scene redraw before, and when I saw Razmerry’s request I realized this was the perfect opportunity to do so! Unfortunately this meant that I would have to reference James Barry’s art, and while I adore his style (much of my current style is derived from his) I did not trust his anatomy enough to be a perfect reference, haha! I did end up discarding Ravenpaw’s original pose in this scene and including Jumper.Ravenpaw’s comic arc is one of my favorite manga arcs, mostly because I love Ravenpaw! I wish we had seen more of him in the books. This scene was incredibly powerful, as Barley had always been laid-back and not one to start confrontation. AND THEN HE SMACKED HIS BROTHER IN THE FACE!! Since I’ve uploaded a MAP part. Yikes. In my defense, I’ve started spending far too much time on them. This part alone has a lot of new things I’m working on, including blue screen and (blocky) lip sync! And yes, the walk cycle is meant to be slow. I didn’t want to overwhelm myself with an animated walk cycle, so I attempted to make an animatic-style cycle. There are a lot of things I want to improve on this, but it is so much more complicated than what I’ve posted in the past so I am actually kind of proud!Not sure how many of you follow my DeviantArt account, but I really don’t want to get into the debate I unwillingly fell head-first into. Appledusk’s characterization is vague because the novella was told from Mapleshade’s POV, and can be interpreted in any way you want. Appledusk, as he turns away from Mapleshade, is thinking of the life he could have led with Reedshine and their kits. I actually felt bad for him while working on the flashback scenes! I had an incredibly busy week. I definitely want to redo this piece at a later date, since this was all done in one day.I chose to focus on Squirrelflight, Brambleclaw, and Leafpool for this because they really took the brunt of Hollyleaf’s tale. I mean, Jayfeather and Lionblaze briefly mention in The Forgotten Warrior that cats started whispering about where their loyalties lay, but they were not as attacked by the Clans as the adults were. Squirrelflight and Leafpool lost the respect of their Clanmates; they were often mentioned as ‘out of place’ and abandoned by most of the Clan. Brambleclaw had to deal with not only being lied to by the one cat he trusted most, but the fact that his children weren’t actually his children by blood.Now, I am also disturbed by the idea that just because Squirrel/Bramble aren’t the birth parents, they aren’t the TRUE parents of Lion, Holly, and Jay. Lion and Jay coming to terms with the idea that their birth parents gave them up is only touched upon later, and it did not get the kind of attention it deserved. Goosefeather was such an interesting character when he was introduced in Bluestar’s prophecy, and this is the one time I was actually okay with the Erins granting an old character superpowers. I had a lot of fun playing with tweening rigs, and I definitely want to try more complex poses in the future!I love Puddleshine, he has such an adorable name and is such a nice big brother to Shadowpaw! I felt bad for him when we first met him; here is another cat who didn’t want to be a medicine cat, but was roped in ‘just because.’ But he’s great at what he does, especially since his training was so rushed!This is another scriptless MAP, so I’ll explain the story: Leafpool tells Puddlepaw to collect some marigold for her. Puddlepaw is initially excited to be given such a big task, but is quickly discouraged when he can’t seem to find anything. Luckily, a friendly honeybee buzzes by just as he is about to give up, seemingly determined to get somewhere. Puddlepaw, realizing that bees like flowers, gets an idea and quickly chases after it. He’s a bit hesitant and looks to her to make sure he’s doing it right, and she assures him he is. Now, full of confidence, he practices leaping for prey. I think a lot of people were dissatisfied with Crookestar’s Promise when it first came out. We were promised that Crookedstar had gained the approval of his Clanmates through hard work and sheer determination, but what we got instead was a made-up sign.At least Mapleshade’s characterization was great. We first met Mapleshade in Omen of the Stars, and while she was creepy there, she was nowhere NEAR as OBSESSED as she was in Crookedstar’s Promise. She had a lot of fans before her novella came out, and it was just as blood-soaked as we hoped.Although I was a little peeved that we the fans could no longer come up with our own ideas of her backstory. I know that I, at least, had to discontinue a fanfiction I was working on, although it did not have a lot of love ^^” But that’s a story for another day.Thank you to Jaybae and ShadowCat for the request!
