Star Wars: Rebel Assault II: The Hidden Empire (1995) MS-DOS Longplay español

-------------------
PO'ed was an FPS originally released in 1995 for 3DO, and a year later for PlayStation. Now Nightdive Studios brings us this remaster, and my question is, why? I tried this game for the first time just a few weeks ago, PSX version on DusckStation, and I thought it was awful. I thought about make a video for my “Playing crappy games” section, but I didn't really feel like it at the time.
Now I find that they have released a remaster.... Well, I bought it out of curiosity, to see how much better the experience is, and here is this gameplay testing it. Playing it in HD and with modern controls is somewhat better (although the movement itself is still not good)... but the game itself is still bad. In my opinion, of course.

Playthrough of the single player tournament mode of Star Wars Episode I: Racer, developed by Lucas Arts and released in 1999 almost at the same time as the release of The Phantom Menace. I play with Anakin and I win all the races, which is not an achievement because the game is quite easy.
I already brought to the channel the longplay of the videogame that followed the plot of the movie, and now I bring this one that is inspired by the famous sequence of the pod race, and that takes us to race, not only in the circuit of the movie (it is the last race of the championship, although in this gameplay is the ante-penultimate, because then there are two extra races), but also in several other planets.
This is the version that was released a few years ago (more specifically the GOG one) that was updated to be played on current machines, because for a long time to run this game was very difficult due to compatibility problems. And not only allows to play it today (even works on Windows 11 without having to apply any fix), but also in 4K widescreen and 60 fps (the original was at 30) so it's practically a remaster. Not only that, it also works with a current controller.
This game surprised me in its day, for its number and variety of circuits, but especially for its spectacular feeling of speed, which managed to transfer what was seen in the movie. We ride futuristic vehicles, a kind of chariots pulled by rockets instead of horses. To this day it is still a lot of fun and the feeling of speed remains intact.
My only downside is the low difficulty, it's too easy to come first and win the races, especially if you improve your vehicle. I looked if I was playing on easy mode, but there is no way to change the difficulty, or I couldn't find it.
By the way, when playing in 4K the videos look extremely small, because they don't scale with the resolution. I have zoomed them by editing to make them look full screen. I only show them the first time, the rest I skip them.

Full gameplay of the demo of DoomEXHUMED, a mod for GZDoom created by Casketkrusher inspired by Powerslave/Exhumed, Lobotomy Software's Egyptian-set FPS. This mod is inspired by both the PC and console versions (which are different games), and combines it with Doom gameplay and a selection of enemies from both games.
I really liked this demo, the adventure is not linear, but we must travel between maps to perform certain actions and get objects that allow us to continue (in the style of the console version). It is well managed and is not so convoluted that you get stuck too much. The level design is good, and visually is very good, using well the assets of Exhumed among others, with the graphical improvements provided by GZDoom. Good detail the time and weather changes. In short, I had a good time playing it, and I look forward to the full version of the mod.

-----------
This month marks the 25th anniversary of the release of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, and regardless of whether it was a disappointment in its day, what is undeniable is that it was a big cinema event, since the last Star Wars film had been in 1983 (Return of the Jedi). I remember with nostalgia everything surrounding the premiere, which as a fan I lived intensely.
There was a lot of merchandising for the movie, including several video games that came out around the time of the movie's release. One of them is The Phantom Menace, top-down action adventure game which obviously follows the plot of the movie (although with some changes). At the time I was interested in playing it, but I didn't, for various reasons.
Well, I wanted somehow to remedy that, playing it as if I had done it at the time. But since I don't have a retro PC, I emulate it on my current Windows 11 PC with PCem emulator. It has the following specs:
[Socket 7] Shuttle HOT-557
AMD K6-2/300 AFR-66
128MB RAM
Sound Blaster AWE32
Voodoo Banshee (the card I had at the time).
I play it with the graphics at maximum and at 1024x768 resolution, and it works quite well in PCem. Recorded at 4K for maximum video quality.
As I said, it's the first time I play this, so don't expect a quick and perfect gameplay, I'm sure I left some secrets and there are situations that can be solved in a better way.
About the game, in general I liked it, but it is very poor in many things, you can tell that it was released in a hurry and not very polished for the release of the movie. One thing that spoils the action is the lack of lateral movement (strafing), that along with a clumsy platforming, both things lead to lots of unfair deaths. About the graphics, I like them, they remind me of Tomb Raider but in top-down view. In the sound there is little to comment, because everything is taken from the movie (including music, which I have left despite the copyright). Anyway, it's a game that I won't play again, but it was interesting and I finally scratched the itch of not having played it back in the day.
Soon I will publish the full gameplay of another game based on Episode I, one that I personally like a lot and is considered the best based on this movie.

Last month the source code for Descent 3 (1999) was released, and there is already some work done by fans, like this Piccu Engine, a version of the game focused on quality of life improvements.
This engine is still a bit rough around the edges in some things, for example, the mouse sensitivity is too much even at minimum, and the brightness selector don't work, which makes the game look quite dark. For that reason, I added more brightness to the video by editing. Also, at 4K the ingame menus look too small. These are things that I guess will be improved. But I wanted to show it and make it known, for me it's great to finally play this game without so many compatibility problems that have prevented me from enjoying it for a long time.

I play the first two levels of Hollywood Holocaust and then the first two of Plug and Pray. Well, only part of the second one. This chapter, which is exclusive to this version and replaces The Birth from the PC expansion, seems to me terribly bad, with a level design that seems to be made by people who are learning to use the Build editor.
Renderer: Vulkan
Vsync: on
Internal Resolution: 6x native (4K)
Anisotropic Filtering: 16x
Dithering: off
Blending Accuracy: Maximum

Gameplay playing Hot Shots Golf Fore! (Everybody's Golf in Europe) for PlayStation 2, 4th installment of the PlayStation exclusive golf series that I particularly like a lot since the first one I played on Vita. In this gameplay I play 2 complete courses in Tournament mode. It includes an eagle (14:37) and some embarrassing momment.
This installment is really complete, it is one of the golf games I've seen with more courses, no less than 13. From here, the saga has been having less and less courses (even with the DLCs), ending today with the PlayStation VR one with only 4.
About the emulation, in software mode it is practically perfect, but at very low resolution which makes it not look too good on current screens, too pixelated. The game does not get along well with the hardware mode, as there are several graphical glitches, generally mild, except one quite important, that the power bar shot darkens a lot and costs a little to distinguish it, even so it is playable. Even so, the emulation is much better than a year ago, which had serious performance issues and did not render shadows.
Some stuttering in the sound of the video is due to the recording.
These are the settings I use that are not default, emulator version v1.7.5750:
Renderer: Vulkan
Vsync: on
Internal Resolution: 6x native (4K)
Anisotropic Filtering: 16x
Dithering: off
Blending Accuracy: Maximum

Gameplay of the demo of POOLS, a game (walking simulator) inspired by the liminal spaces of flooded labyrinthine rooms and corridors. I saw it on Steam main page, and I was curious to try it since it has a demo, and well, I have uploaded the gameplay.
It doesn't have much really, this theme of liminal spaces is always disturbing because it's like a oppressive nightmare thing. But in this case, there are no monsters or anything (apparently not in the full game either)... It's just about walking through these surreal environments. The graphics are not bad, but it isn't anything visually complex that squeezes the power of my RTX 4090. It looks like the game won't last much longer than 1-2 hours total.
If anyone reads this, I'd like to know if there are any games on this topic that are worth playing.

(English below) Gameplay probando Austin Powers Pinball, desarrollado por Wildfire Studios Pty.

Already from the first seconds of the gameplay of this game produced by 3D Realms is more than evident the inspiration with Blood, the classic of Monolith, as we start emerging from a tomb, or in this case from a mass grave. I've had my eye on this game for a while but I hadn't played the demo yet. Turbo Overkill is a cyberpunk FPS with a fast and agile gameplay. Retro-inspired, we have what we can expect from this kind of games, that is, lots of action, not very complex levels but they are not linear, some key to get, and secrets. Besides that, it has some more modern features, such as being able to acquire and buy skills. A striking peculiarity is that the character carries a chainsaw on one leg with which he can finish off enemies when slidding.

Under such a long name, we have a shooter with a super crappy style made on purpose, it's like a bad game made with the Build engine, in a way reminds me of TekWar and other Capstone crap from the mid 90's, only this one is fun to play. Or as we are told at the beginning, it is like a game made by a teenager.
A very particular game, no doubt. From what I played in this demo, I liked this bizarre game, but I would need to play more to know if I would end up liking it. On the other hand, this game is apparently related to Hypnospace Outlaw, I don't know if I would have to play it to understand the joke.
By the way, the video was recorded with the sound a bit choppy, I don't know why...

Well, seeing that there is an FPS festival on Steam, I've thought of trying a few demos of games that I see interesting, and if I like them enough I'll post a gameplay testing the demo. Some of these games have been on my radar for a long time, and it was about time to try them. As always, gameplays without commentary, and will be without previous experience in most cases, started only a first time to configure options, so expect a lot of clumsiness from me.
Let's start with this Zortch, a very classic style game that seems to be taken from the late 90's and more specifically from Nintendo 64 (only in HD, of course). I really liked it, it seems like you're playing a game from that time, with a similar gunplay, more or less complex level design, secrets, "low poly" graphics with low resolution textures filtering, etc.. And the price is pretty good, for not being on sale.

Gameplay testing Unreal on a PC emulated with PCem with the following specs:
[Socket 7] Shuttle HOT-557
AMD K6-2/300 AFR-66
128MB RAM
S3 ViRGE DX & 3DFX Voodoo 2 4MB SLI
Sound Blaster AWE32
Windows 98
Playing at 1024x768 resolution. The game is playable, although it doesn't reach 60 fps. I think a 300 Mhz CPU was too slow to run such a demanding game, which was the best in graphics in 1998. A wonderful and amazing game in its time, by the way, a whole audiovisual experience. It is a game that even today I still find it beautiful (and fun to play).
This is just a curiosity showing the game running on an emulated PC, because it is perfectly playable on a current PC with the Gold version and the 227i patch, and graphics can be improved with mods. Someday I have to make a video showing the game with such mods.

Gameplay of the first levels of Rebel Moon Rising, the sequel to the forgotten sci-fi themed first person shooter I showed earlier in the channel, Rebel Moon.
This sequel is practically the same as its predecessor, that is, same gameplay, same graphics, practically the same weapons and enemies (of the latter there is something new, little). At least as far as I've played the novelties are minimal. It's clear that they didn't take much care, it seems more like an expansion than a sequel. The great novelty is that this time it is not exclusive of certain graphic cards, and that it works on Windows instead of on MS-DOS. It also allows you to choose resolution and set it to HD, although in 16:9 resolutions it does not maintain the aspect ratio.
I am playing it on Windows 11, for this I use dgVoodoo for better compatibility and to keep aspect ratio. For the music to work it is necessary to have the CD image mounted with a program like Daemon Tools, as it is an audio CD. The game tends to crash easily in the changes between 3D and 2D screens, it is advisable to save the game just before exiting a level.

Playthrough or longplay of maps 1 to 3 of Q2 PSX Reborn, a wad of 8 maps that recreates the version of Quake 2 for the first PlayStation in form of a wad for Doom 2. This wad is played with the usual weapons and monsters of Doom 2, but with the Q2Stuff mod they change by those of Quake 2, and therefore we have a much closer experience to the original game.
In this gameplay I play the first 3 maps of Q2 PSX Reborn, trying to find most of the secrets, and playing on default difficulty, because the difficulty in a wad with hundreds of enemies per map, which transformed into those of Quake 2, makes the difficulty soar.

Gameplay of the first maps of DOOM 2 In City Only, a community-created 36-map megawad that takes place entirely in urban environments, with the DN3DooM mod, which changes the Doom marine to Duke Dukem with his weapons and monsters (although I setup it so that Doom's monsters also appear).
I thought these mods would combine well, since Duke Nukem is a lot about urban environments. The maps in this wad are packed with enemies, just look at the 3rd one there are no less than 1000+ enemies, and with fairly large environments, the action is non-stop. I think it's quite fun, but it can also get very complicated at times when projectiles rain down on us from many points on the map.

--------------------------
Gameplay of the Saturn version of Doom, emulated with the core Beetle Saturn (a version of the Mednafen emulator, the best of this console) from RetroArch. This version of the legendary id Software game is considered one of the worst that came out at the time, and quite inferior to the PlayStation version.
The main problem, you can already see in the video, because the emulator is accurate enough to show the lousy framerate it had, sometimes bordering on unplayable (and even so, it's better than 3DOs). In addition, although it has the same music (or similar) and sound effects of the PSX version, it lacks the colored sectors that was the hallmark of that in the Sony console. Even so, they try to give it a gloomy touch by making it darker than the MS-DOS original, too much at times. Another flaw is that most of the sound effects are only heard on the left side, I checked and I think this is not an emulation bug, but I'm not 100% sure.
In this gameplay I show the first maps of Doom and Doom 2 (this version came with both, just like the PSX). I put a CRT filter to mimic how it would look on TV, I recommend watching the video at full screen or else it looks weird.

I realized that a few months ago I bought this game in some GOG sales, and I still hadn't tried it 🤔 So well, in this gameplay I do just that, I play it for the first time, with no previous experience. It's a spin-off of the crazy Postal saga in the form of a "boomer shooter" with a certain retro feel. Good game, according to this first contact I think it's fun, and it's quite irreverent like the saga from which it comes (I only played the second and its expansion many years ago).

-------------------------------
S3 Virge was the graphics card that came with the 2nd PC we had at home, a Pentium 166 (the first was a 386, I don't even remember which chip or graphics it had), the fact is that it was with this one that I saw for the first time a game with graphics acceleration. More specifically it was Terminal Velocity, and every time I played this game later, I remembered how the graphics looked much better than the regular MS-DOS version, because with the S3 it had texture filtering and the resolution was much better (from 320x240 to 640x480).
So I asked myself, could I emulate that on PCem, emulating precisely a Pentium 166 with that card? Well, I tried, and the game looked with a lot of graphic errors. So I thought of trying with 86Box, a more advanced fork of PCem. In this one, the emulation of the S3 Virge in graphics acceleration mode is better, but as you will see in the video, still far from perfect, especially because of the annoying flickering that the interface suffers. You can disable it, as I do sometime in the video, but then you don't see things like the distance to the next target. Hopefully they can improve it, if only for this game, because there is no other way to play it with those graphics, not even in the recent remaster you can enable texture filtering (at least when I tried it).
In addition to this one, I show 3 other games of the few that got to have support for the S3 Virge. The best one is Tomb Raider, but it doesn't differ much from the 3DFX version. POD works without graphical glitches, but it has pretty bad framerate (still playable) and without texture filtering, but this I saw in youtube videos showing games with the real S3 Virge that is normal. About this game I want to post another video soon.

In this video I show DN3DooM, a cool mod made by kipo50, that transforms the gameplay and monsters of Doom into those of Duke Nukem 3D, with a bit of Brutal Doom. In addition to that mod, for this gameplay I added another one that changes many of the textures to those of DN3D, as well as the music.
By default, DN3DooM changes all the monsters, but in the options you can change it so that there is a mixture of both according to a percentage, I have put it to 50%, this way we have the monsters of both games at the same time.

Specifically, I show the intro of these games, as they contain their main themes, and some interesting things as in the case of the intro of Dune 2, because the sound effects are also played by the MT-32 (also some in the case of Space Quest IV).
Personally, I will never cease to be surprised how much better the midi music of these games was with this device, which in some cases even sounds like CD music. And thanks to emulators like DOSBox (in this case Staging, a much improved version) we can have an experience very close to what it was like to play at the time with sound devices like this, available to few people for its price (and even today). Roland MT-32 was released in 1987 at a price of $1,790 today (allowing for inflation) according to Wikipedia.
By the way, DOSBox Staging uses by default a CRT filter that tries to mimic the look of the monitors of the time, I thought to leave it for the video, so I recommend watching it in full screen, because in reduced view it does not look quite right.

Gameplay of the first 8 levels of Rebel Moon, a forgotten first person shooter developed by Fenris Wolf Ltd. and released in 1995 for MS-DOS. This game was designed for a series of graphics cards with the Rendition Verite 1000 chip and is not supposed to work without it, but in practice, by adding the -vga command to the .bat file used to run the game, it can be played in software mode and therefore on any PC (under MS-DOS, I'm playing it with DOSBox).
I think the game is not bad, it is not one of the best FPS I've played, it has some shortcomings, but it plays well and the graphics are not bad for 1995, especially for the colorful lighting effects, this was not very common yet. Curiously, the maps have a grid structure like games like Wolfenstein 3D or Rise of the Triad, but somewhat more complex as there are different heights and diagonal walls.

Did you know that there was a version for the first PlayStation of Dune 2000, the strategy game first released for PC in 1998? I certainly didn't know it until recently. And it is a rather curious version, because it is not just a direct port of the PC version, but it runs in a completely different engine with polygons for 3D graphics, instead of being a completely 2D game as on PC.
In this gameplay I play the first 3 missions with the Atreides with the DuckStation emulator. This game was compatible with the PlayStation Mouse, so I have configured the emulator to use it instead of the PS1 gamepad. Strangely enough, I notice a delay in the cursor quite exaggerated and it is quite uncomfortable to play (even so, better than with the controller), I don't know if it's something of the game or the emulator, but I have not noticed it so much in other games emulated with PlayStation Mouse.
Otherwise, I have configured the emulator to improve the visual aspect of the game:
-4K resolution.
-PGXP for geometry correction.
-Widescreen rendering (hack) and 16:9 aspect ratio.
-Forced 4:3 for FMVs.
-xBR for texture filtering.

Gibtropolis by gw_x9 for the Arcane Dimensions mod. Played on hard difficulty. Ironwail sourceport.
A great map, with a "mundane" city setting, but with a Quake touch. Very well designed both visually and in the playable side. It's not as big as it looks but with a lot of enemies and therefore action, plus a lot of coming and going through its places, so in the end you take a while in it, especially the first time because you do not know very well what to do next (the first time it took me almost twice as long).
I get 5/8 secrets, it would have been 6/8, but reviewing the video I realized that I forgot to take the one at minute 05:40 which is throwing a grenade through the hole, I get the grenade launcher shortly after but I wanted to leave the invincibility item for later, and well, in the end I forgot it.... This map is so intense, it doesn't give you time to think too much 😂.
In this series of videos, I'll play maps that I think are really good from the ones I'm testing. I play them once on my own, quietly and trying to find as many secrets as I can, and if I like it enough, I dedicate a second game recording it for the channel. I want to make clear that my goal is not to show a perfect gameplay, or all its secrets, only the ones I manage to find in those two playthroughs.

Afortunadamente existen otras alternativas.

Hexplore is am action-RPG game, very Diablo style, whose main peculiarity in its day was its engine made with voxels, which gave it a 3D effect without the need of a graphics card, and without losing the essence of 2D graphics. In its day it looked very good, and I think it still looks great. Otherwise, it's a solid game, of which I have fond memories, although of course, since then there have been much better games of the style.
This game is currently sold on GOG, where I bought it despite keeping the game I bought back in the day. When you buy classic games on GOG, you expect them to work on current PCs, unfortunately many times it is not so, not few times you have to apply them yourself fixes, or in this case, it doesn't even work on Windows 11, and I have tried with several DirectDraw wrappers (the game comes with its own, but as I say, it doesn't work).
Fortunately there are other alternatives. For example, I show it playing it in a Windows 98 emulated with DOSBox Pure (it is the same version of GOG, yes, you have to remove the ddraw.dll file or it will not work). And as you can see it works perfectly. I have also tested it on PCem with windows 95 and it works, but it is slower.

Many people were asking for it, and now it is here! A fan has created a mod that combines Cheello's Voxel Doom with the gore and brutality of Brutal Doom with the help of others mods, like Nash's Gore Mod (which I have already used in a Voxel Doom video, by the way). It's still in a bit early state, as it lacks a lot of things compared to the original Brutal Doom, but I guess that it will be improved. Although, there are a few new enemies.

Gameplay of Perdition's Gate, an unofficial commercial expansion for Doom II with 32 maps. I play in Ultra-Violence difficulty and I get all the secrets except one, in the 3rd map it was impossible to find it, and searhing information, it is in an inaccessible sector, so it can actually be said that I get them all.
About this Perdition's Gate, as far as I know, its creators, fans of the Doom community, contacted id Software to be one of the Final Doom campaigns, but it was rejected for being submitted after the deadline. Then, it was marketed by a distributor without the license, something that sometimes happened back then. In any case, I think its quality is superior to other similar cases.
I play it in Doom95 on a Windows 98 emulated with DOSBox-X. Why? Basically for nostalgia, because in its day I played a lot this version of Doom officially ported to Windows 95 (initially programmed by Gabe Newell, by the way), and to vary a little with respect to the usual GZDoom.
On the other hand, since I think the soundtrack is quite good, I have configured DOSBox-X to play the W98 midi with a soundfont that imitates the sound of the Roland SC-55 midi module, for which the original Doom music was composed.

Gameplay of Emperor: Battle for Dune, a real-time strategy game released in 2001 and developed by Westwood Studios. It is the sequel to Dune 2000 from 1998.
We can see that in this one they have given a great graphic jump to the 3D (and graphically it is not bad at all for being of 2001), besides that playably it is something more complex than the previous ones. It also has a lot more cinematic sequences, mix of real actors and CGI that Westwood liked so much to put in their games to put us in the situation of the missions. I must also highlight the soundtrack, quite good.
In this game, as in the previous ones, we have 3 houses to choose from, the usual Atreides and Harkonnen, plus the Ordos, Westwood's invention. In this gameplay I play the first 4 missions with the evil Harkonnen, so as not to always show the good guys. We will go conquering regions of Dune in addition to that we will be able to forge alliances or to make enemies with other species, according to our actions. There are a greater variety of situations and also a greater effort to differentiate each of the houses with their own units.
With dgVoodoo you can force the game to run at 4K (with black bands on the sides to maintain the aspect ratio).

Continuing with my review of classic video games based on Dune, and it's the turn of Dune 2000, remake of the 1992 game Dune II, released in 1998 by Westwood Studios. As a remake that is, we find practically the same, but more updated. Even so, I would say that by 1998, this game was already outdated compared to other RTS of the time, for example, Starcraft, or even C&C Tiberian Sun also by Westwood. In fact, it seems that this game still uses the engine of the first C&C games.
Of course, we have the typical video sequences between missions characteristic of Westwood, even with some Hollywood actor like the one in the thumbnail of the video. Do you recognize him? He is John Rhys-Davies, known for his roles in Indiana Jones and Lord of the Rings.
In this gameplay, as I did in the Command & Conquer video, I show how I install the game on a PCem with Windows 95, and play the first missions of the 3 campaigns, 3 in the case of the Atreides and 2 of the others, because basically they are the same, changing only some small things.
This game can be played with OpenRA, a program that reinterprets the engine of some classic Westwood RTS to be played on modern PCs, but I have preferred to show it as close as possible to how it would be to play it on a PC of the time (since OpenRA changes several things, such as the interface).

-------------------------
Theme composed by Stéphane Picq from the 1992 video game Dune by Cryo Interactive.
Recorded with PCem emulating the AdLib Gold sound card. For me it is the best song of the soundtrack.

Gameplay of Dune II: The Battle for Arrakis, also known as Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty, developed by Westwood Studios. It is one of the first real-time strategy games as we know them, in which building a base, collect resources (in this one the spice, of course) and generate units to fight the enemy. It was inspired by the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive game Herzog Zwei.
I've always found it curious that both the first Dune, by Cryo interactive, and this "sequel" by Westwood Studios, came out the same year and were so different, both produced by Virgin Games. In wikipedia can be read why this happened. In any case, two very interesting games and considered great classics of their time.
Of course, it is obvious that this Dune II has been very outdated in the gameplay aspect and is clumsy and not very intuitive to play today. Command & Conquer (of which I also have a recent gameplay) improved the formula of this game, which became more and more polished in later C&C releases. In any case, it's clear the influence of this Dune II in the whole genre and that's why it's a historical game.
I am playing the game on a PCem emulating MS-DOS 6.22. It also works perfectly in DOSBox. This is the CD version, by the way, but it doesn't make a big difference with the floppy version. It is currently not sold anywhere, due to licensing issues I guess, so it is abandonware. There are also versions for Amiga and Sega Genesis / Mega Drive.

01:40:22 Mourningvale last secret
01:42:48 The Lady of Ascension boss

In this 5th part of my WRATH playthrough, I find the last secret I had left in the first hub, Mourningvale, I play the 5th and last level of this hub, and I defeat the first boss of the game.
When at the beginning of The Priory I look at the stats, I was shocked. 827 enemies and 28 secrets? How could this be? This level must have been gigantic and it was going to take me hours! Well, it is big and it takes me about 2 hours, which is certainly impressive. The level consists of the priory, which is quite large, and big lava caves. But when I reached the exit portal, I had only defeated 396 of those 827 enemies, so either I missed more than half the level, which I highly doubt, or the number is wrong. I certainly think it's the latter. On the other hand, I get 20 of the 28 secrets, but I can't know if this number is reliable or not...
In this level, by the way, we encounter a new enemy and get a new weapon.

--------------------
Gameplay of Dune, Cryo Interactive's adventure and strategy game released in 1992, which was the first prominent videogame based on Frank Herbert's novel (and David Lynch's 1984 movie). Since the new Dune movie has just been released, I thought I'd do a series of gameplays from classic video games based on the franchise.
It is known that the soundtrack of this game, composed by Stéphane Picq, was specially designed to be played with the Adlib Gold, a premium sound card of the time for performance and price, and PCem emulates this sound card, even with the surround module that was purchased separately. So I play on a PCem emulating MS-DOS 6.22 and with that sound card.
This game has an improved version on CD, but this I show is the floppy disk version, because for some reason the music is extremely low in this version, almost inaudible, I don't know if it's a bug of emulation or of the game. Anyway, with AdLib Gold the digital sound effects are lost, I checked and apparently it is something normal that happened in the original hardware, and one of the attractions of the CD version are the digital voices. And I found it more interesting to show the music in its highest quality.
I think that it is impressive how it sounds, very electronic of course, but we must think that we are talking about a game of 32 years ago. That there was a sound card that reproduced sound of such quality was impressive. Although of course, this being emulation probably doesn't sound exactly the same. But I think it's great that you can emulate it and have at least something similar to the original experience, without having a retro PC with the actual card. And I imagine that, like everything retro, it must be highly revalued.
This video was twice as long, but I've cut it for two reasons, the first is that I prefer to keep the length of these gameplays to an hour or so, and I don't think anyone would have been interested in watching such a long video anyway. Second, I played until I found Chani, which is where the best song of the soundtrack plays, but I get a copyright notice there, incorrectly by the way (youtube, please improve your AI), so I'm going to put it in a separate video so it doesn't affect the whole video.

A quick video with gameplay of the recently released Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster, the new remastering by Nightdive Studios of a classic game, this time the first FPS of Star Wars, Dark Forces. It seems to me a good remaster, improves resolution, textures, sprites, cinematics, etc. Undoubtedly it is currently the best way to play this Lucas Arts classic. During the gameplay I switch between the remaster and the original game, as it can be done in real time by pressing F2.
I think it would have been nice if they had added some more improvements such as voxels at least for the sprites, and colored lighting, it would have been even better. Oh, and that they would have adapted the engine to work internally at 60 fps instead of the original 70, as it causes a certain lack of fluidity playing at 60 hz.
In this gameplay I show the first two missions (levels) of the game and a bit of the 3rd one, with the corresponding cinematic in between. I don't go further showing this remaster because I already have a complete gameplay of Dark Forces in HD with the source port The Force Engine (that I made before this remaster was announced).
One advantage that The Force Engine has over this Remaster is that you can play fan-made levels, so even though this remaster is better, it's still good that The Force Engine exists (plus it's free, if you have the 1995 game of course).

Stats conseguidos de The Hollow:
Enemigos: 285/293
Secretos: 15/17

Non commented gameplay of WRATH: Aeon of Ruin, a retro-style first-person shooter inspired by the classics of the 90s, with the engine of the legendary Quake as the base. It is developed by KillPixel Games and published by 3D Realms and Fulqrum Publishing. Thanks to Fulqrum, who have provided me with a key of the game so I could play version 1.0 a few days before the official release.
It was announced 5 years ago and shortly after it started its early access. It has been a long time to wait, too long, to be able to play the full version, but I think the wait has been worth it, it's a pretty fun game that I personally as a lover of classic FPS I'm enjoying a lot. The game does not try to reinvent the wheel, its gameplay is just what you would expect from a game like this, although it has some touches of its own, such as the large attack with the blade that also serves as a long jump to access inaccessible places with a normal jump, which of course serves among other things to find secrets, and I like the agility it provides.
In this video I show the introductory level that serves as first contact and tutorial of its game mechanics, as well as the first hub, and one of the 5 levels that are available from the beginning (to play in order of choice): The Hollow. I play in "hard" difficulty. This is a "blind" playthrough, that is, what you see is me playing the game for the first time, with no previous experience with the game, so don't expect a perfect gameplay, but I try to do the best I can and get most of the secrets. Stats obtained from The Hollow:
Enemies: 285/293
Secrets: 15/17
The game consists of 15 levels in total, which played for the first time on hard difficulty and trying to find most of its secrets can take about 1 hour each. According to its creators, it's about 20 hours of gameplay in total, which it's a lot for a game of this type. I don't know if I'll upload the entire playthrough of the game (which will be one video per level), but at least I'll upload all the ones from the first hub.

I liked it a lot: good aesthetics, good level design, good music, good weapons, good enemies... all good :) And precisely because of that, it leaves you wanting more, I found short only 6 levels...
Well, fortunately there is a complete game made with the Quake engine that comes out very soon from early access after years in development, that I've already been able to play and I'll publish gameplay soon...

Gameplay of Command & Conquer, the remembered classic Westwood Studios strategy game released in 1995 that inaugurated one of the most beloved strategy series in history, now dead and buried because of Electronic Arts. In its gameplay, this game was the spiritual successor of Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty, one of the first real time strategy games.
It occurred to me to show in this video the whole experience of what it was like to install the game and play the first missions of the GDI campaign, transporting us to the mid-90s. This is possible on a modern PC thanks to a Windows 95 emulated in PCem (and with a virtual machine, I guess).
The game originally came out for MS-DOS, but soon after they released this version for Microsoft's brand new operating system, Windows 95, which featured multiplayer and high resolution graphics (for the time).
May fans of this one forgive me if I'm not playing it right, this is actually the first time I play this game. About 25 years ago I played and finished its successor and spin-off, Command & Conquer: Red Alert, and subsequently I have played some of the more modern ones (for example, Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars, without finishing it), but never this one, and I haven't played this saga for a long time.
If you want to play it, I would recommend you to play the remaster they released a few years ago, which updated graphics and gameplay of both this and Red Alert, and maybe I'll upload a gameplay of that, this time it will be of the NOD campaign.

This is the introductory video of the story of Outcast, the PC game Appeal released in 1999 of which I uploaded a gameplay recently (and that will have a sequel next month). You can see that they worked hard on this intro, but the quality with which it was transferred to the game CD is too poor, with a resolution of 320x240 and quite a lot of compression. So I have improved it by AI, upgraded it to 1080p and from 25 to 60 fps. It's the first time I do this and I don't know if I have chosen the best options in the program, I have made several tests and I think this is the best way. Miracles can not be done, I guess, considering the very low quality of the original. How do you think it has been, good or bad?
