#CanucksUnlimited #GlensHangerEarthX Aircraft Lithium Battery Install – Safe! 18Lbs Lighter! Stronger Starts!Glens Hangar - Canucks Unlimited2025-09-26 | Welcome back to the hangar! In today’s video, we head into Chris’s shop for some much-needed aircraft maintenance: an oil change, new oil filter, oil temperature probe, and the installation of an EarthX lithium battery in my 1961 Cessna.
The big question—why switch from lead-acid to lithium? For me, it came down to weight savings and performance. The EarthX battery is nearly 18 lbs lighter than the old one, which not only improves weight and balance but also gives me stronger cranking power for reliable starts—especially important with electronic ignition. Check out EarthX here: earthxbatteries.com/glenshangar
We’ll walk through the installation, venting setup, STC paperwork, and even some teeter-totter center of gravity theory. You’ll also see real results after a few hours of flight testing: stable voltage, quick starts, and the peace of mind that comes with modern lithium iron phosphate chemistry. This battery is safe, smart, and FAA/Transport Canada approved—not the “scary lithium” you may have heard about.
If you’re an aircraft owner or pilot curious about upgrading from lead-acid to lithium, this video will give you a detailed, hands-on look at what’s involved and what you can expect.
✈️ Topics covered: Oil change & oil filter replacement Installing an oil temperature probe EarthX lithium battery installation (STC) Comparing weight savings: 22.7 lbs vs 5.4 lbs Understanding CG impact on performance Flight testing results & battery safety
👉 Next up: I’ll be flying west to Steinbach to finish my instrument rating—and maybe squeeze in my first fishing trip in 35 years. Stay tuned!

#CanucksUnlimited #GlensHangerBehind the Scenes: How I Record Cockpit Audio & Video While FlyingGlens Hangar - Canucks Unlimited2025-09-19 | Welcome friends! In today’s video, I take you behind the scenes of my in-cockpit and on-wing camera setup for filming flights in my 1961 Cessna 172B. A lot of you have asked: What cameras do I use? How do I mount them safely? How do I power and sync everything for smooth footage and sound?
I’ll walk you through my full rig, including: ✈️ GoPro Hero 9 and Hero 12 setups (and why I use each) ✈️ Custom aluminum wing mounts attached to inspection plates ✈️ External V-mount batteries powering cameras for hours of flight ✈️ Tentacle Sync timecode generators and audio recorders for perfect sound sync ✈️ Cooling solutions to keep GoPros from overheating ✈️ Why I still carry a Sony ZV1 and even a DJI Osmo Action 5
This isn’t about making Hollywood-perfect aerials—it’s about safe flying first, with cameras coming second. But with a lifetime career as a cinematographer and DP in Toronto, I’ve picked up some tricks for reliable, simple camera rigs that won’t fail mid-flight.
If you’ve ever wondered how to film flying, how to mount GoPros on an airplane wing, or how to sync cockpit audio with action cam footage, this deep dive should answer your questions.
🛩️ Got more questions? Drop them in the comments—I’ll be happy to share more details.

#CanucksUnlimited #GlensHangerI Flew 5 ½ Minutes to Buy GroceriesGlens Hangar - Canucks Unlimited2025-07-11 | Join me for a quick but meaningful flight from Steinbach South to Steinbach North Manitoba, as I take Mike Victor Uniform—my trusty 1961 Cessna 172—across town for an oil change and a grocery run. It’s just a 6-minute flight, but it leads to a surprise homecoming moment and a connection to the aircraft’s past.
While doing my IFR training at Harv’s Air in Steinbach Manitoba, I’m living on-site in a humble trailer and flying daily to sharpen my skills. The team is busy keeping Harv’s impressive fleet flying, so I fly over to Steinbach North Airport, where I meet Ken Peddy, a former commercial pilot who trained in this very airplane back in the late 1960s when it belonged to the Winnipeg Flying Club.
We chat about the original paint job, the big ADF antenna hump, and the 8,000 hours this bird logged before disappearing from the records. If you love airplane history, general aviation stories, or just want a look into everyday flying life, you’ll enjoy this one.

It's a beautiful morning in Edenvale CNV8 and we’re tackling an essential job—changing a cylinder on our Continental Aviation engine. In this episode, I respond to your comments from the last video and explain why we chose to replace the cylinder instead of lapping valves or reaming guides. This general aviation maintenance vlog dives into the gritty realities of aircraft ownership, the risks of maintenance-induced failures, and the balance between flying and fixing during summer flying season.
Watch as we: Perform a double-cylinder replacement on our Cessna 172. Inspect valve guides, ring gaps, and new Superior Air Parts cylinder installation. Fire up the engine for a post-maintenance test flight from Edenville to Oshawa. Monitor oil temperature, pressure, mag drops, and engine break-in procedures. Share tips for Continental engine break-in best practices.
Whether you're an aircraft owner, a student pilot, or just love behind-the-scenes aviation content, this video gives an honest look at DIY aircraft maintenance and real-time engine break-in flying. Stay tuned for part two where we head north and complete the break-in hours!
