Spiderbeam Aerial-51 Model 404-UL Antenna Review, Part 1. Radio Prepper 2021-06-26 | This is an off-center-fed dipole By Spiderbeam, the famous antenna mast manufacturer. It does work on the advertised bands, though your SWR will vary depending on location. I would prefer connectors instead of the wires straight into the potted BALUN... It is fairly light and the BALUN works; I only tested it to 50W on 6m. There will always be some residual common-mode RF current on the coax shield though, as with any OCFD antenna. The antenna radiator is made from UL-wire / Liv-2Yz (ultra light aramid synthetic fibre and copper strands, Insulated). The antenna comes including 12m coax which despite the low weight (only 185g) shows only very modest losses (~1dB on 40m, less than 2dB on 10m). Despite the lack of connectors which would make repairs very difficult, with careful handling, the occasional QRP tuner and maybe an extra RF choke, it looks like a decent choice for multi-band operations. I need to test it on other bands and in a different environment... A properly designed BALUN (which is cannot be purchased commercially anywhere that I know of) will eliminate ALL RF on the feedline.Dozens of engineers have reviewed my measured results; two OM have repeated a few of my tests and confirmed.It all depends on the balun, and the balun in the 404-UL and 807-HD were both purpose designed to avoid CMC on the feedline.I have used this antenna in dozens of portable locations running between 50w and 100w; never had any problem. I run 750 watts at home, no problem.More important, we have 2000 users and so far only ever had complaints about CMC 2 times.A German magazine tested the 807 for 6 months, making hundreds of QSO on all bands, running a “healthy 750 Watts”. No problems.ARRL and RSGB tested my antennas. No problems reported with RF on the feedline.We have a Groups.io user group for OCFD antennas, with about 1400 users. You can ask in that group about CMC on the feedline. They will all think you are crazy. We have known how to eliminate that for about 7 years now, ever since I ran my 2013 CMC field tests.THE biggest features of my 404-UL is, it is fed so close to the center of the antenna that there is hardly any CMC at all – the Balun eliminates the rest – and it weighs just 400 grams including 12m of coax. This system gives you a full length half-wave dipole you can mount on the back of your plate carrier and allows to swap different handheld antennas for best results or different bands. It uses plumbing copper tubing, an SMA chassis connector, BNC-to-SMA connector for the radio and an RG-316 BNC cable. By the way I suggest not using too much radiated power close to your head, especially on higher frequencies, as radio waves can cause heating of some nearby tissues. Building The truSDX Multi Mode Micro Transceiver. Radio Prepper 2022-04-24 | I hesitated a bit before buying this kit but it turned out to be an easy build and everything works just fine. The form factor is incredible, which is a great asset for prepping, as it won't even be felt in a bug-out bag. Being able to power it with a USB power pack or a solar panel is awesome. For slightly more than 100 Euros you can't go wrong with this kit. The 3D printed case is a liability in the field but it is well designed. I printed it in PLA+ for added strength. You will need M3x35 hardware. Not present in the kit is the power connector. You will also need an SMA-male to BNC-female adaptor. The logic board was pre-programmed, I didn't have to do anything on that front. Note that the AliExpress kit is certified by DL2MAN and PE2NNZ. I want to explore this subject a little more in the future with smaller radios than the two military models I used here. HF goes through vegetation and various materials better than VHF and much better than UHF. Ask me which radio I would take with me for a jungle trip and I will say an HF radio any day. It won't be much in depth since I will not have it for long but I am so far very impressed by the ruggedness of this radio. The CW keyer seems to have a glitch which hopefully will be fixed in a future firmware. Any TX500 owners experiencing the same? The receiver is very sensitive, tested with my 5m-perimeter magnetic loop antenna. 160 and 6m make this radio a very attractive choice for portable operations and you won't be afraid to take it outside. I wish the Morse key and audio cables were much thicker, but other than that, a very promising and well built product! Just about everything on that unit has been changed and/or updated since then. The transformer is now covered with heat shrink. We wanted to use LINEX but with the products shortage, LINEX is impossible to get now. The same changes happened with the wire used to wound the toroid. The unit that you have uses regular enamel wire which is used by any other manufacturers in the industry. As you remember, during the summer 2021 it was just about impossible to get anything for manufacturing! The wire that we're currently using is a 14 gauge solid core wire with a FEP sleeve covering. Typically referred to as FEP, Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene is a type of fluoropolymer commonly extruded as both an insulation and jacket material for wire and cable. FEP exhibits outstanding resistance to chemicals, has a wide temperature range and excellent electrical properties. Very few manufacturer if any uses that kind of quality wire.This unit doesn't come in a box because it's a portable unit. The box would have made it way too bulky and heavy. Just look at the CHA EMCOMM III B which is a base station unit and the CHA EMCOMM III P which is a portable unit. The B version is WAY bigger than the P version for portable.Now concerning your wire crimp issue. It shouldn't be a concern to anyone really. We've been crimping about 95% of all our wires since the last few years already. It's a none issue. Crimp technology has surpassed soldering tech in some usages like the ones we're talking about. Crimping offers stronger, more reliable connections than soldering. Soldering uses heated metal to join the cable to the connector. Over time, this filler metal will degrade, which may cause the connection to fail.From what I can see on your broken wire issue it looks like a sharp edge actually created that problem (break). Our wire come directly from the manufacturing spool to the little coil that we provide with all our antennas. We do not wound the wire on the winders anymore. It's faster and the customer can decide how he actually wants to install the wire on the winder. So why I know it's a sharp edge? It's because the wire we're using is covered with PTFE sleeve and PTFE doesn't crack, break, split or doesn't become brittle over time under any conditions! This is one of the main property of the PTFE wire! You can literally tie a knot on the wire and undo it and the wire will NEVER crack! If you also look closely, you can also see one or two fibers of broken copper clad wire that has been broken! You can see that at 5:00 on your video.The type of wire used in the LEFS antenna design is also very different from all other manufacturers. In order to reduce weight without compromising efficiency and durability we're using a proprietary Ultra-thin 20 gauge PTFE antenna KEVLAR wire (-70°C to 150°C). The CHA PTFE wire is used in high temperature electronic applications or where abrasion resistance is required. It has excellent thermal aging, solder damage, flame, and moisture resistance. PTFE resists solvents, grease, ozone and other chemicals. Low power loss, ideal for high frequency applications. Recommended for critical applications.

Spiderbeam Aerial-51 Model 404-UL Antenna Review, Part 2. Radio Prepper 2021-07-15 | This is an off-center-fed dipole By Spiderbeam, the famous antenna mast manufacturer. It does work on the advertised bands, though your SWR will vary depending on location. I would prefer connectors instead of the wires straight into the potted BALUN... It is fairly light and the BALUN works. My results on Part 2 aren't really different than part 1 (link below). There will always be some residual common-mode RF current on the coax shield though, as with any OCFD antenna. The antenna radiator is made from UL-wire / Liv-2Yz (ultra light aramid synthetic fibre and copper strands, Insulated). The antenna comes including 12m coax which despite the low weight (only 185g) shows only very modest losses (~1dB on 40m, less than 2dB on 10m). Despite the lack of connectors which would make repairs very difficult, with careful handling, the occasional QRP tuner and maybe an extra RF choke, it looks like a decent choice for multi-band operations. A properly designed BALUN (which is cannot be purchased commercially anywhere that I know of) will eliminate ALL RF on the feedline.Dozens of engineers have reviewed my measured results; two OM have repeated a few of my tests and confirmed.It all depends on the balun, and the balun in the 404-UL and 807-HD were both purpose designed to avoid CMC on the feedline.I have used this antenna in dozens of portable locations running between 50w and 100w; never had any problem. I run 750 watts at home, no problem.More important, we have 2000 users and so far only ever had complaints about CMC 2 times.A German magazine tested the 807 for 6 months, making hundreds of QSO on all bands, running a “healthy 750 Watts”. No problems.ARRL and RSGB tested my antennas. No problems reported with RF on the feedline.We have a Groups.io user group for OCFD antennas, with about 1400 users. You can ask in that group about CMC on the feedline. They will all think you are crazy. We have known how to eliminate that for about 7 years now, ever since I ran my 2013 CMC field tests.THE biggest features of my 404-UL is, it is fed so close to the center of the antenna that there is hardly any CMC at all – the Balun eliminates the rest – and it weighs just 400 grams including 12m of coax. Building a 2:1 BALUN For Delta Loop Antennas. Radio Prepper 2021-05-14 | Delta loop antennas are awesome when you feed them well, either using a quarter-wave length of 75-Ohm coax or a 2:1 transformer, which I am building in this video. It works best from 80 to 15m, but will go up to 6m in a pinch as you will see being used with my Racal VRM-5080 on 6m FM. Update: Some people say this is a 4:1 and using the wrong core... Any experts here to comment? Building a Half-Wave End-Fed Antenna For 6m, Part 2. Radio Prepper 2021-04-16 | Testing the Xiegu G1M QRP Radio on 20 and 15m, USB and CW using Morse code on a half-wave end-fed antenna, 64:1 transformer. I did not use a counterpoise in the water because I wanted the antenna to be tuned for land operations and a counterpoise is not needed at QRP levels for a HWEF. For a permanent installation I would have grounded it to the water.
