I-43 Reconstruction Mega-Project in Southeastern Wisconsin - Michels Michels Corporation 2023-08-07 | Michels Road & Stone, Inc. is reconstructed a 5.5-mile stretch of I-43 near Grafton, WI. The two-year project included new pavement, wider shoulders, a new interchange and an additional lane in each direction, widening the road from two to three northbound and southbound lanes. The project prepares the road for traffic volumes of 65,000 vehicles a day. Thanks to the Wisconsin Transportation Builders Association for creating and sharing a look at this large-scale project.

Natural Gas Compressor Station in Northern Wisconsin Michels Corporation 2023-04-12 | Michels Pipeline, Inc. rebuilt a natural gas compressor station on a small site in Northern Wisconsin. The crew installed two new cleaner-burning compressor units along with associated piping, electrical systems and equipment; three building; concrete foundations for site equipment and buildings; and new roads, parking and septic system. Once the new equipment was in service, Michels also decommissioned and removed the old station equipment. The work was performed on a 1 ½-acre site, about one quarter the size of a typical compressor station site. As a result, scheduling and communication were critical to ensuring safe, efficient performance. Michels Canada - Microtunnel Project Michels Corporation 2023-03-07 | A combined team from Michels Canada and Michels Corporation completed a tunnel through hard granite from a shaft near the shore of Victoria, BC into the Pacific Ocean. The 2,121-mm (6.95 feet) diameter tunnel will be an outfall for an under-construction wastewater treatment plant that will serve the core area municipalities of Victoria, Esquimalt, Saanich, Oak Bay, View Royal, Langford and Colwood, and the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations on Vancouver Island. The 117-metre (385 feet) tunnel was completed in a single drive from a 15-metre (50-foot) deep rock wall shaft out into a rock mattress retrieval pad. The ocean depth at the tunnel exit was 11 metres (36 feet). A Herrenknecht AVN 1800 microtunnel boring machine (MTBM) was used to complete the drive. Because the drive ended below the ocean floor, a wet retrieval was conducted to lift the 96,000-pound MTBM to the surface. During the wet retrieval, divers filled the space between a bulkhead at the front of the tunnel and the MTBM with sea water to equalize internal and external water pressure. Next, hydraulic cylinders push the machine away from the bulkhead. Then, divers attach rigging from a crane on a barge to the MTBM, allowing it to be slowly lifted to surface and loaded onto a barge.

Building a transmission line in a rail corridor - Michels Power, Inc. Michels Corporation 2022-10-28 | Michels Power, Inc. worked in a unique situation while rebuilding a 115kV electrical power line along a narrow railroad corridor in Connecticut. The project’s largest and most unusual challenge was working near rail tracks, so close in fact that more than 25 pieces of specially outfitted hi-rail equipment were mobilized. The hi-rail accessories allowed bucket trucks, excavators, backhoes, dump trucks, vacuum trucks, cranes and flat cars to drive on and perform work directly from the 3.5 miles of rail tracks. In a traditional setting, the equipment would move along and work from matting and solid ground, but space limitations in the railroad corridor rendered it impossible. Several crews worked together to replace 139 wood structures with steel monopoles, including a distribution line under-build on 69 of the poles. The purpose of the project was to eliminate old wood pole structures in a dense urban area with more reliable steel structures. By the end of the project, the existing 115kV line were transferred from wood poles onto steel structures to harden the area’s power grid.-Hi-rail equipment is a vehicle capable of operating on both rail tracks and conventional roadways. The equipment keeps its normal rubber tires and has flanged steel wheels fitted beneath them. The name is a combination of highway and railway; thus, hi-rail. The 1950s and 60s were a time of massive expansion for the United States natural gas distribution pipeline network. Thousands of miles of new pipeline were constructed. Work was abundant. To meet the needs of this emerging market, welder Dale Michels formed a partnership with his brother-in-law, Ted Koenigs, and Ted’s business partner, Jim Michel, in 1959. The combination of Dale’s pipeline construction experience, legendary work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit were complemented by his partners’ business knowledge. The result? Michels Pipeline Construction, a regional natural gas contractor in Dale’s hometown of Brownsville, WI. Dale’s desire to be the best was a constant driving force. He had an unwavering belief that his company and his people could succeed where others faltered. Michels first jobs were installing natural gas mains and underground telephone lines and cables. The work was hard, days were long and conditions were challenging. The crews relied on grit in the absence of specialized equipment. Michels’ fate was in peril in those early days. Dale was critically injured when a crude side boom fell onto him, crushing his hip. His recovery took more than a year. Day-to-day operations were left in the hands of Jerry Eilbes, Dale’s first employee. In what would become true Michels fashion, Jerry and the crew rose to the challenges rather than fleeing for other work.Dale eventually made a full recovery. The accident left a lasting mark on his wife, Ruth, his family and the fledgling company. To this day, the Michels family remains passionate about safety so other families can avoid a similar experience. That commitment is the framework for Michels’ safety culture and our promise to providing crews with sophisticated, well-maintained equipment.As operations grew, so did Michels’ reputation as a reliable construction partner. Michels Utility Services team builds twin utility lines under a bridge deck Michels Corporation 2022-05-05 | A Michels Utility Services, Inc. crew worked on a catwalk 150 feet above the Mississippi River to build two pipelines underneath a bridge deck as it was being rehabilitated. The 20-inch-diameter pipes each spanned 1,400 feet and were suspended from custom-built hangers. Crews used special equipment to assemble, weld and test the pipes while working on an 8-foot-wide catwalk. Special training and procedures were necessary to allow the crew to complete the work safely.
