Reflections of Life
Beyond Perfect Family: How to Navigate Complicated Relationships
updated
The art of knowing how to get lost involves daring to go beyond the boundaries that contain you and explore the unknown. To escape for a day from the safe path and enter the unforeseen.
And it doesn't mean that you need to wander into a forest on your own, without a map or GPS. There are many simple ways to get lost — reading an engrossing book, engaging in a conversation about a topic you don’t know much about, or just trying a new meal in a restaurant that is outside of your usual.
Feeling lost can be a gift — if you only choose to look at it this way. It’s a state that presents opportunities you can’t see when you live your life according to a predictable schedule. It involves opening yourself up to the uncertain and the new. It stimulates your imagination and gives you new perspectives.
Let's all go out and get more lost.

Learning to let go is a journey of self-discovery. At first, it's scary to lose something dear, as if a part of you is slipping away. But as you embrace the release, you find freedom and a sense of bravery too. It's about accepting life's changes and challenges, knowing that what stays will find a way, and what comes will paint new colours in your life.
Once you master letting go, you'll feel lighter, allowing space for acceptance, balance, and peace.

We cook with our hearts as much as with our hands, because when we cook for other people, it's to make them happy and content. And possibly the greatest payment that you could receive for your efforts is seeing the people at the table, enjoying what you’ve prepared for them.
So the next time you sit at the table, be thankful not only for all that has been prepared for you with time and care, but also for that person who loves you, who thought about you with every stir of the spoon, with every dash of salt, with every teaspoon of oil. We should take a moment to appreciate all that they've done for us. They deserve it. And gratitude is a form of love too!

While these roles are important because they give us a sense of purpose and validation, we are not the roles we play. We are in fact, the light that animates every soul in the dance that we call life.
If you can accept who you are and be that very person, without fear of rejection, then you’ll no longer need to play ‘roles’ – they’ll have diminished meaning because you become more ‘you’. It takes courage to step into the fullness of just being you. But when you start to do that, you’ll feel a greater appreciation, not just for yourself, but also for the people around you. And you’ll find more peace in your soul.

As the adage goes, “Check on your strong friends". Too many of us are going around putting on a happy face, when deep down inside, we’re hurting. The deep dark hole of depression is scary yet familiar to so many of us. And those who have suffered for a long time become familiar with the hole, a place where not much light gets in.
You have to realise that there is a space between living in the hole and acknowledging that the hole is there. Because that space is your freedom. That space is where your power to choose lives.
Let people into your struggle - please, please, please reach out with your words and ask for a helping hand, or a shoulder to lean on if you’re feeling hopeless or alone. Please let someone help you see past depression to the hope on the horizon - because you can be heard, and you can be healed.
There is love and understanding waiting for you. Help is just a few words away.

Take a moment and seriously consider your answer to this question. What would you do? Maybe you’d spend your time close to home, appreciating time with loved ones. Or, maybe you’d pack your bags and travel the world. Maybe you’re interested in philanthropy and would dedicate that year to community service. Or maybe you’d spend most of your time alone, quietly reflecting on your life.
But the truth is, you can’t cram a lifetimes worth of experiences, achievements, challenges and friendships into one year. Life doesn’t work that way. But what you can do is make sure that you don’t take your time for granted, and that you consciously choose to pay attention to the things that are most important to you.
Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. When you open your eyes to the beauty that surrounds you, you not only learn how to live but find what to live for.

Would you rather let these fears chase you around, dictating your outcomes and sabotaging your life? Or are you okay with feeling the initial discomfort of acknowledging the fear, knowing you have the power to look it in the face and say, “I’m ready to conquer you!”
Contrary to what it might feel like, fears exist to highlight your unmet potential. They should be seen as an alias to be worked with, not an enemy to run from. If we have the courage to face them honestly, openly and willingly, fears can show us where our true potential lies.

Having hard and uncomfortable conversations is part of this intention. It's often the things that are left unsaid that cause the most problems, the expectations that we didn't communicate, the times that we were actually hurt and said it was ‘fine’.
And fear is often the main reason we don't engage in many of these conversations. But the reality is that the real end begins the moment we start avoiding and sweeping these hard conversations under the rug. We need to acknowledge the importance of these instead of hiding from them. We just have to be brave and willing to sit through the initial discomfort of bringing them to the table.
Give yourself grace as you navigate the complexities of these dialogues. When we share and connect to each other in the painful places, we build bonds that nurture connection and love. And love has the power to heal.

The garden is a space defined not by it’s physicality but by the emotions it evokes and the connections it provokes. And the act of gardening can change the way we relate to the world around us for the better, giving us perspective and teaching us lessons about life.
Do we choose to plant seeds of fear or love? Do we fertilize anger or harmony? Do we water the connections we have or let them die of thirst?
Our souls are gardens. Our hearts are flowers. They need to be watered, tended, fertilized and loved. Happy gardening!

And while we may not be responsible for causing the pain, we can be responsible for ending it. And to admit to that and own up to that is a humbling thing to do. You create an opportunity for growth and expansion in your life by taking accountability. You let go of your ego’s dominance over your actions and decisions, and start listening more carefully to that intuitive voice inside.
To run from pain is to run from life itself. Because by embracing difficulty and the challenges it presents, is how we grow and improve as humans. So let’s learn to accept it as a part of life. It's this that will make us whole again.

There is something extremely satisfying about growing your own food. Knowing that you planted a tiny seed and with the help of the sun’s energy, you nurtured it into something that can feed your family.
And when an abundant harvest allows you to share with your neighbours, you have the chance to spread the love. Because love isn't just a warm and fuzzy feeling - it is an action - it is the way we treat someone - the way that we share. And the deepest beauty of love is how it changes lives.

Feeling lonely is a normal human experience - it is something we all go through. And it's not simply a function of being alone. You can feel lonely in a crowd. Because loneliness is a feeling of being alienated from others, not feeling understood or connected - it’s a feeling that something is missing.
But loneliness is also a message that our body sends us, letting us know that we are important, and we need to become friends with ourselves again. When we feel isolated or alone, we can choose to have compassion for ourselves. We can recognise our emotions without judging them. When we accept where we are at and what we are struggling against, without berating ourselves, we can then begin to change.
In order to defeat loneliness, we have to listen to its message - You are complete, nobody is needed, you are enough!

Do you ever wonder if the gloominess around you will snuff out your light? We will face seasons where the darkness will try to overtake us and extinguish our fire. However, we can still shine.
And you can help others to shine their light too, by encouraging those around you. Because when others see your light, it inspires them to let their light shine as well. Even in the darkest of times, seeing the light of another brings hope. You may brighten someone else’s life just with your smile.
Be bold enough to shine your light no matter how small or insignificant you may feel. Remember, it takes only a flicker to change the room.
"Your work is to discover who you are and then, with all your heart, give your light to the world." ~ Jennifer Williamson

So give yourself the space to enjoy moments of stillness – to lean into them, to be nourished by them. Let stillness be a teacher and a friend. It is these moments of silence that open up a closer connection with others. We are able to express ourselves, ask for what we need, and give what we desire to give from the centre of our being.
As Rumi says, “Listen, silence isn’t empty, it is full of the answers.”

One of the most powerful turning points in life comes when we begin to understand the shadow as a great teacher. In darkness, it waits for the light of our own awareness - to be seen, heard, understood, and embraced. And as we learn to accept and care for all parts of ourselves, we grow and evolve into our best selves.
Gradually coming to love the shadow gives us access to the wisdom that it holds for us at its core - the secret gems we find when we dare to open the hidden door of the shadow.

And as Antony and Margy share with us in this film, love is like a boat on the ocean - full of ups and downs, currents and ripples, favourable winds and foreboding waves. Mistakes in a relationship are inevitable. But keeping those mistakes forgivable and learning how to deal with the fallout, is the key to a long-lasting relationship.
And if you feel you've found your heart's other half, we wish you endless days of joy and laughter, and countless nights of deep embrace, unraveling the mysteries of the universe together.

Think of your feelings as waves on the ocean. They come and go, rise and fall. No feeling lasts forever, and anger and sadness are necessary, helpful parts of the human experience. But when we try to suppress these emotions, we are unable to truly thrive as people. Part of having a full life is feeling all of your emotions. It is beaming with joy, and feeling like your heart is full of gratitude during some moments. It is also experiencing heartbreak and disappointment and truly letting yourself sit with these feelings.
All of our emotions contain gifts and help us to truly grow as people. You deserve to let yourself experience all of your emotions, and to treat yourself with kindness and care.

We all have the power of choice in life. We can resist what we don't like in the hope that it will go away. Or we can accept things the way they are and make space for something new and different to transpire, simply by being in the flow of who we are and what is happening around us. And when we surrender to what is, we allow the true beauty of life to unfold. This magical space is where joy lives, and where gratitude can be found.
Life is precious when we align with the magic in surrender.

“The secret is to surround yourself with people who make your heart smile. It’s then, only then, that you’ll find Wonderland”
Our relationships teach us about so much more than the hearts of the ones we love - they teach us about ourselves. Relationships show us how to love and be loved, as well as who we want to be in life and who we don't.
Surround yourself with those who bring out the best in you. The ones who not only want to see you smile but also try to make you smile when you’re down. The ones who try to make your day brighter. The ones who know your value and your worth and remind you of it. The ones who help you bloom.
And have the courage to be a good friend to those who choose you.

"There was a man who was so disturbed by his own shadow that he was determined to lose it for good. So he got up and ran. But his shadow kept up with him, and so he ran faster and faster until the exertion took its toll and he dropped. If he had simply stepped into the shade, sat down and stayed still [meditated], his shadow would have vanished." -Chuang Tzu, The Way

We care way too much about what other people think of us. We think that people are scrutinising how we look, what we do, what we say. It can become suffocating. It’s time to decide whether you want to take ownership of your life or give others the power to rule your life?
The bravest people are the one’s living their truth, despite fear. Being yourself takes courage. It requires looking at yourself as you are in this moment and accepting and honouring who you see. And immense growth is possible, if you face it and work through it.
“The act of going within, finding our truth, and then sharing it - it helps us far more than we know.” - Kamal Ravikant

There is no shame in not knowing, there is only freedom. An uncertain mind is an open mind. It is a mind which is curious and interested. It allows us to be creative and willing to live in a state of wonder and possibility, like children do.
When we meet life with a genuine sense of uncertainty, we cease to project that which we think we know, and we instead begin to see life for what it truly is. It is life itself, unfolding before our eyes.

But it’s a mistake to think that you have to have a job to be productive or fulfilled. Many people achieve much more when they retire than they ever did at work, finally having the time to pick up on their interests, and be true to their passions.
Retirement is a state of mind rather than something that starts at a certain age. And life doesn’t need to close or end. In fact, it can open up in surprising and healing ways. And it can also be a journey of discovery and adventure. Go into it with curiosity about yourself and embrace the possibilities that open up to you.

When you learn how to embrace change, you’ll find that the uncertainty of life feels a little less scary. Live in the moment, cherish the people we love, and appreciate what's happening right now. And when we do that, life becomes an unexpected adventure, filled with unimaginable joy.

With age can come confidence, and freedom to realize who we really are. As we age, we grow into a deeper kind of beauty, one which works its way from the inside out. It’s a more authentic beauty because it radiates from within. So let’s celebrate lives well lived. And feel lucky to wake each morning to appreciate what the new day has to offer.

While these changes may give you a fresh start, before too long, if you haven't dealt with the issues that made you unhappy in the first place, they will eventually rear their ugly heads again. Sadly, you can't escape them. Because, wherever you go, there you are. It is impossible to escape yourself.
Problems are meant to be solved, and if you have the courage to face them directly, then you’ll realise this life-changing truth: “You can’t run away from your problems. They will just chase you and get bigger and bigger. If you stand and face them, they will shrivel and disappear.” - W.H. Fordham

For centuries, the greatest thinkers have suggested the same thing: Happiness is found in helping others. The key is to find the approach that works for each of us and our own individual passions. When we do, then the more we give, the more we stand to gain purpose, meaning and happiness — all of the things that we look for in life, but are so hard to find.
And so the purpose of life is to be useful, to be honourable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well. And the happiness will flow from there.

But there is something important to be learned from the art of letting go. Walking away from certain situations and painful memories is a step forward. It is hard to let go and move on, but once we do, we are freed from the emotional shackles that were holding us back. When we stop expecting life to be perfect, for people to be the best they can be, we learn to appreciate both life, and the people in our lives, for what and who they are.
"Some people believe that holding on and hanging in are signs of great strength. However, there are times when it takes much more courage to know when to let go."―Ann Landers

I'm talking about that spark inside that ignites you with passion and purpose. That's your light. Everyone is born with their own inner light. Yet so many of us are disconnected from that thing that really lights up our relationships, careers, health, and life. What covers up that light is all the fears, negative thoughts and past baggage. Our energy becomes dense and heavy as we walk around carrying the weight of the world.
But our light is always there, and it's available for us to access at any time. Once we recognise that, we can start to let go of those fears that are holding us back. And we will once again be reconnected to a path filled with purpose and passion.
It’s time to start living your light.

Even though you come out of loss hurt, you can grow and you can learn. If we let grief shake us into being kinder human beings, we wake up to our shared humanity. We wake up to what binds us together as people. We see the light in each other. We find community.
And maybe, armed with all the gifts and lessons of loss, we’ll walk each step differently, more mindfully, intentionally, and deliberately. And when we choose to walk this path with our eyes focused on the gifts, they multiply.

All emotions are valuable and can teach us profound lessons if we are willing to see them in this way. Anger shows us what boundaries have been crossed. Grief shows us what we are profoundly attached to. Fear shows us where our deepest doubts live.
But these emotions do not define who we are at our essence. We can choose how we react to them. We can choose to feed the dark sides of these emotions that only breed more darkness. Or we can choose to use these emotions as a compass pointing us towards our light.

We forget that we’re all flawed - no one is perfect. When we recognise this, we can start to practice kindness and learn how to love these imperfections in everyone we meet. Kindness displaces rudeness, criticism and anger.
And by cultivating more kindness, to ourselves and others, we start to experience how the darker parts of life become illuminated by love. In doing so, we open the door to calmer acceptance of ourselves and of others. And we’re also able to enjoy the journey of life, in the company of friends, with more gratitude and forgiveness.
Create more love today.

I recently read…
“Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.” - Samuel Ullman
We all age - it is the normal process of living. But rather than being apprehensive about our aging bodies, let’s celebrate our growing perspective. Rather than worrying about our changing relationships, let’s embrace the opportunity to make new friends with people who share our interests. We must never lose the desire to do the things we truly love, because it is the saying 'no' to life that ages us. It's not about ageing. It's about living.

Instead, wealth comes from within. It comes from what you give to those in need, what you share with people you love, and from that which you cultivate in yourself.
Regardless of what we do—and whether we give money, talent, or time — when we serve others we become better ourselves. And the more we give, the more we stand to gain purpose, meaning and happiness — all of the things that we look for in life but are so hard to find.
“A man’s true wealth is the good he does in this world.” - Khalil Gibran

But we can learn to soften our hearts, recognising that we don’t need the armour it thought it needed to keep it safe. You have the choice to free yourself of the emotional burdens you are holding onto. By opening your heart, you help yourself, others and the world to be a more loving place. Let go, choose love, and let your spirit soar.

Many of us think that if we just have enough money, everything else will fall into place. We’ll be healthier, our relationships will be stronger, and we’ll have more time - just as long as that bank balance stays high.
But true wealth is not about digits in your bank account. Instead, it is all the special things in your life - particularly the things that money cannot buy. Think of how much everything you have would mean to somebody else who dreams of it - health, family, friendships - the list is endless.
We wish you a life filled with true riches.

If you're going through a painful time in your life, know that it is never worthless. These tough times teach you to see possibilities that you would never have fathomed in the comfortable moments.
Let us refuse to be held back by pain or sorrow. Let us overcome. Let us learn to breathe life into ourselves again. Let us step into a way of living that is magical, so we can wake up each morning feeling grateful, generous and free.

But happiness is better linked to contentment. It’s about being content with what we have - not hunting for anything more than what we need. The abundance of the present is enough to lead a happy and healthy life.
Of course, this doesn’t mean that we should settle for things as they are. We should continue to dream, set goals, and work towards them. We just need to remember to enjoy the journey and not rush to make it happen.
Being grateful for everything we do have instead of spending most of our time thinking about what we don’t have, makes life a lot more beautiful. So take that first step toward happiness.

Acknowledging that a problem exists is the only real way to move on. Facing up to the problem is part of the healing process that is necessary to help us get back to brighter times.
