Amazing breakthroughs in farming techniques are our great hope to reverse the environmental catastrophe that the world currently faces. For decades, modern farming has been a major source of chemical pollution and greenhouse-gas emissions- but we believe that Rancho Libertad can be a shining example to the world of new farming methods that sequester CO2 while eliminating herbicides, pesticides and chemical fertilizers. All while creating healthier, tastier food.Puerto Rico imports 85% of its food, and because of a law called the Jones Act, the cost of that imported food is 10% – 40% higher than in the US. As one of Puerto Rico’s highest elevation farms Rancho Libertad enjoys air temperatures some 8°F – 18°F cooler than most others, allowing it to compete against that higher priced imported food. Rancho Libertad also qualifies for extraordinary tax exemptions. No sales tax, import duties, excise tax, use tax, and 90% of our income is tax exempt. Due to this unique set of circumstances Rancho Libertad is probably the only place on earth where experiments to reduce the cost of carbon-negative permaculture farming to below that of modern chemical farming, can be conducted profitably and therefore sustainably.
