Have you ever wanted to do something for years, but the timing just didn't feel right? Sewing my own wardrobe has been on my mind since our Berlin days. I'd look at capsule wardrobes online and think about how special it would be to make my own one day. I made Pinterest boards with inspiration, but van life and boat life didn't really create a conducive environment for non-essential sewing projects. However, 2022 feels like my year to tap into my family history of seamstresses. This is going to be a really fun journey of exploring how to not only improve my craft of sewing, but also explore my personal style, how to use patterns, how to make my own patterns in the future, and express myself in a whole new medium!
Are any of you clothing makers? knitters? quilters? thrift flippers? Or are you a sewing beginner like me who is just getting started and has SO much to learn? I am really excited to explore all different types of fabric crafts this year and really hope we can learn and inspire one another to live creatively!

Before the shipping container build takes off, Lou needs to get all three containers level. He did some online research and spoke with a friend of ours up here who had built a few shipping container homes professionally before starting this project to make sure his game plan was safe. The leveling process only took two days, and we’re so happy with how it turned out. These containers have so much potential for our family, and I can’t wait to finalize the designs! If you have any ideas on how we can make our container home extra special, please let us know if the comments. We love hearing your ideas :)

We went back and forth on if we should build our dream cabin or we should build a shipping container house and the container home won!! We are really excited to share this next chapter with you and can’t wait to see how the project unfolds.
Shipping containers have a lot to offer for our off grid situation because of their instant ability to provide a waterproof, strong structure. We have been debating different design options for a while, but having three shipping containers next to each other gives us enough space and flexibility to create a really comfortable living situation (hopefully!). In terms of color and size, we basically just bought the containers that were available at the time--20ft was all we could get up our road, so the 40ft containers weren't even an option. We got two standard shipping containers that look like they are at the end of their service life, but are totally watertight still, and then we got one High Cube container that is much newer so we could have higher ceilings and more insulation in one of the three at least.
We plan to do one shipping container office, one kitchen, and one bedroom/living room. This will be a massive undertaking and probably will take the better half of a year to get it all done. So hope you’re ready for a lot of container content!
Big hugs, Dana
ps thank you to Tyler from Island Industries for his amazing help with the shipping containers - island-ind.com
pps - we've had a TON of rain since the gravel pit was built, and the entire area has stayed really dry so far, so it looks like it was worth the effort. That whole area has a gentle slope downhill, and Lou spent a week scraping all the mud and topsoil off everything, but mudseason will be the real test of how well it works ; ) One day we'll probably have to remove the woodchips we put down as they break down into soil, but it will be perfect for a gardening project!

Winter is coming! This wall tent was always supposed to be a two-season accommodation; somehow, the time has already come to prepare it for the plummeting temperatures. We are thinking that with a wood-burning stove we could have friends come to stay for a winter weekend if they are up for a big adventure.
This video also has a little sneak peek of our future build plans :) I can't express how excited I am about the shipping container project and I think it's going to be the perfect spot for us to set up full-time on the land. We have so much more to share about this with you, but I have such a good feeling that, with a lot of love, these containers are going to become our favorite place on earth.

Lou, a bunch of new friends, and my dad worked to build the most beautiful outhouse I've ever seen. The salvaged wood gives the exterior a lovely aged look, and the entire structure's dreamiest part is the antique clawfoot bathtub. I still can't believe how beautiful and also functional the space is. When you live off-grid creating moments of luxury is extra special, and stepping into a hot bath surrounded by the changing Autumn leaves was truly one of the best moments of my life.

I used to be such a sunshine girl, but with a baby, it's been the nicest change of pace to have cool weather and get to spend the days all snuggled up cozy in the tent as a family. It's definitely been trickier for Lou to work on his build projects though with all the mud on the property. Luckily before the rain hit he was able to build an outhouse with a few new friends of ours. There's a whole build video of that coming soon, but hope you enjoy the sneak peek this week!

He always has a smile on his face and is the sweetest and most patient baby, but it does mean that mama and papa are a little tired from weekly doctors appointments that are 90 minutes away, plus a recent surgery, so we cherish our family time in the wall tent is even more now.
In this video, Lou sets up a lot of new systems to make our tiny home more comfortable. We get a massive laundry line, INTERNET, a gravel pit for the shower, and a cozy campfire setup. This is just the start and we have so many plans for this homestead!

Welcome to our Wall Tent Tour! We wanted to share all the details of our off grid set up with you now that it’s finished. It took roughly 2 months to build the wall tent + platform (with lots of breaks to snuggle our new baby, of course) and turned out much more like a tiny house than a camping tent. It has a full kitchen, composting toilet, outdoor shower, fridge/freezer, enough solar power to edit these videos and is nestled in the woods in Upstate NY.
It really feels like this is the best adventure we’ve had yet, and it’s just beginning! Lou and I have been dreaming of our own property for so many years and now that we have this incredible base camp to work from it feels like we can start tackling the long list of projects that lie ahead. We can’t wait to get this homestead off the ground and share the whole journey with you.

Keep in Touch:http://instagram.com/wildweroamWe Built An Off Grid Tiny House (from start to finish)Wild We Roam2022-07-31 | When Lou pitched me the idea of living in a wall tent for the summer, I have to admit I was a little skeptical. We have experienced a lot of different off grid living situations (van life, boat life, and a cottage in the jungle), but a tent seemed a little crazy. But this wall tent is so much more than I could have dreamed of! It really is more like a tiny house than a tent, and all of the details make it feel like a real home. I can't wait to make memories together as a family here.
Living off-grid does provide a bunch of challenges, but with the solar system that Lou installed and the fact that this property came with a well, I think we'll be in pretty good shape as we begin our homesteading journey. We have so much to learn and so much to build, but this wall tent feels like the perfect tiny house for us to start this new adventure.
This video literally would not be here if it weren't for Lou. He put in countless hours on this build while I was pregnant and also the first month postpartum with our son Max. We're so used to building things as a team, but for this project, he got creative and figured out a way to make due mostly on his own, not only building this dreamy wall tent but also filming and editing the entire thing by himself. I am so grateful and proud of all his hard work and feel so lucky to have this man in my life. And also so thankful for all of you and your support as we grew our family and took the time we needed to bond and figure out this whole parenthood thing. It feels really special to be making content again, and we are both so excited to get settled into tent life!

We started filming this when I was 6 weeks pregnant and continued all the way until I was 41 weeks. Max was born 2 days after the last pregnant shot in the time lapse.
When I discovered I was pregnant, one of the first things I did was watch a TON of pregnancy progression videos. I thought it was so fascinating to watch the body transform in front of my eyes, knowing I was about to go through the same thing. I’m so grateful that we decided to capture my belly growth because it’s so special to see Max grow, especially knowing now even more than we did in the moments we filmed how much he would change our life for the better.
Thank you for watching and for all your love and support during our pregnancy as we find our feet back in the upload groove postpartum.
And thank you to Lou for making my favorite time lapse ever!

We filmed this video over the last month as we've been getting settled in upstate new york! A lot of other exciting projects are in the works too and we have been doing everything we can to get grounded in our new life before the baby's upcoming arrival.
I'm really happy to say that we found a midwife here who we love and have already met a few like-minded people who are into off-grid/alternative building styles. We're learning more and more about permaculture every day as we search for our perfect property and hopefully find a spot where we can build a self-sustaining homestead (though that will probably take a decade!). We've had a bunch of visits from family too which has been the nicest treat and can't explain how nice it is to have Freja running free in the backyard.
This is the start of a really big adventure and we are so grateful to have you here with us.

Well... we did it again... changed our minds about our future plans and ended up packing up everything and moving across the world. This time though feels quite different than the big move off the boat. Now we're moving back with so much purpose and while there is still a lot of unknown, we are so grateful that we were able to make this decision with enough time to get settled before our baby's arrival (still pregnant as I write this for those of you who come hang in the description box :) - 37 weeks preggo aka full term!!) I really can't explain how lucky Freja and I are to have had Lou to go through this big transition with. He got our whole place packed up/sold tons and got me on my flight and Freja on hers.
We also are SO THANKFUL to our friends in Hawaii - especially Sarah, Nick, Mikalia, and Scott for helping us through this chaotic time in our lives. We love Maui so much and know that it will always have such a special place in our hearts. Honestly, we would love to continue to spend a lot of time in Hawaii, but for now, we are putting all our energy into setting up a stable life for our growing family, finding a piece of land to call our own, and building our dream homestead.

Doing yoga for 100 days during my pregnancy was such an eye-opening experience. I learned how to be gentle with my body, and how to recommit after falling off the bandwagon of daily practice, but mostly I just enjoyed carving out some time for myself every morning to stretch my constantly changing body. It’s so wild to watch this video and see my little baby bump develop into a full-blown pregnant tummy! I absolutely loved practicing yoga with our little guy every morning and it turned out to be such a special time for us to bond before his (upcoming!!) arrival. Doing yoga at home while pregnant was the perfect way for me to stay flexible, work through a few pregnancy symptoms, and gently keep my body moving when more strenuous workouts didn’t seem as appealing.
I wrote a blog post all about the experience that shares some of my favorite yoga classes/yoga teachers I found during the challenge as well as the 3 biggest lessons I learned during the 100 days. You can check it out here - wildweroam.com/blog/100-days-of-yoga-while-pregnant

I set out to do a yoga challenge because it was something I could feel my body and mind desperately needed as we geared up for the adventure of a lifetime. We were living in a little cottage and I had access to wifi, a mat, and the comfort of a morning routine. The transformation that happened during these 100 days was something I wasn't expecting - I had started out hoping for an improvement in my mental health, an improvement in my flexibility, but what actually happened was I fell in love with the practice of yoga so deeply it would become part of my daily routine for much longer than I anticipated.
Also, have to say a massive thanks to my husband, Lou, for going through our footage archive and piecing this one together so beautifully. I'm so grateful for his edits!
Lou and I are so grateful for the chance to get to know this family and share their story with you. We've learned so much from our time not only at their farm but also exploring the taro fields they are planting. This visit was especially profound for us both because we got to experience the traditional process of making poi. Poi is made by hand-pounding the boiled taro plant and has been part of Hawaiian culture for centuries. Daniel has a great TedTalk and during it, he makes poi from start to finish! I'd highly recommend you give it a watch if you want to learn more - youtube.com/watch?v=HYy2FQbT1AU&t=2s
I hope you learn something new during this video and it inspires you to support your local farmers and who knows maybe even inspires you to start planting food for yourself and your family!

I talk about our birth plan, the gender of the baby, how our dog Freja is handling the pregnancy, what supplements I'm taking (more on that in an upcoming video!), and how our relationship is evolving during the pregnancy.

Painting a car can be very expensive! So when Lou got a quote to paint our truck for $5,000, he decided it might be worth looking into painting it himself. After a lot of research, he found the supplies he needed and created an at-home DIY painting setup to transform our 1998 Toyota Tacoma. He had originally planned to go with the rattle can method, but after speaking to a guy at the automotive paint store downtown he was convinced to switch to the air compressor route instead. The whole process took 3-4 days plus the previous research and I can't believe how beautifully it turned out.
We still have plans to paint the bed of the truck with the Raptor kit and have a bunch of projects to do as well. The driver's seat door doesn't open from the outside, the speaker on one side broke, the windshield washer jets don't work, etc, but we thought giving our truck a fresh coat of paint would be the most fun to start with and I think we were right :)

But this time instead of making something for myself, my husband Lou has asked that I help him out with tailoring a bunch of his clothes!
Tailoring clothes to fit your body is something that I hadn't given much thought to. For the most part, I have pretty average proportions, so store-bought clothes generally fit me. My husband Lou on the other hand has a very long torso and has always preffered to alter his clothes to fit his body better. For the last 5 -7 years though life has been kind of wild as we've lived in Berlin, then in a van, a sailboat, and now after getting settled in Hawaii, I can finally become the tailor he's been craving! In this video, I do some pretty easy DIY alterations to a bunch of his shorts and also decide to clone one of his really old t-shirts (which turned out to be harder than I expected!)
Learning how to alter clothes at home is honestly such a helpful skill to have and I am really looking forward to seeing how in the future I can even tailor patterns during the creation process, so all the items I'm making fit us perfectly.
Any tailors out there with some tips? Lou's been enjoying all his alterations so much lately and as of now, they're all holding up well!
Thank you so much for all your support as I learn to sew. It's so fun sharing this creative process with you and I feel like there is limitless potential when it comes to sewing projects in the future! ....................... Want to Support Us? Do you prefer a date night out on the town or a cozy night at home? Lately, I have been far more in the cozy night at home camp and realized that all the sewing projects I have been doing lately are for more fancy occasions. My first dress I made here in this video - youtu.be/mGkYLd2oD2s and my second dress I made for our Patrons as our monthly bonus Creative Corner video in January - patreon.com/posts/61388461 So I decided for my next project I wanted to sew something that would not only be great for a date but also be items of clothing that I would get more use out of.
As a beginner sewer, this project actually worked perfectly. It pushed me to learn new skills like incorporating elastic, cuffs, darts, and draw strings, while also letting me practice button holes again (thats what I used to make the holes for where the draw string goes in and out of the waistband), plus working with a new fabric and new pattern. I really can't explain how much I'm enjoying learning to sew and hope that you can feel all that joy radiating through this video!

How do you feel about the ocean? Does the deepwater scare you or invite you in? For me, the ocean has always been a place of rejuvenation. I loved playing in the waves as a child. Through our years exploring van life, we were always called to the coast spending months on end in Portugal and Greece hugging the ocean side landscapes. And then there was the boat... and the passage... and I saw the ocean in a whole new way. I witnessed her power. The intensity. How small we are in comparison to her vastness. And well... it's taken me some time to fall back in love and I am so grateful for this current point in our life when I have the time and space to fall back in love with the ocean. Diving below and hearing the whale songs, swimming alongside beautiful creatures like turtles and octopuses... it really feels like we're living in an aquarium.
(We shoot a lot of our underwater footage zoomed in with the lens and then crop the 4k footage in post, even more, to make it look nice and big on the screen, but underwater while freediving we try our best to maintain the 6-10ft they recommend here for turtles in Hawaii by law. Also, if you are worried about people swimming too close to turtles, we've learned it's best never to shout "turtle" or "octopus" to your partner while swimming because it attracts a ton of people who surround the little creature!).
We don't get to the ocean every day, but we try to get there once a week and when we do it feels like we're teleporting into a different world. I hope you enjoy this visual love letter to the ocean that Lou put together. I know it's a video I will always cherish.
Oh also, Lou was inspired to flip some of the underwater footage in post-production from our good friend Ed's video, that he made a few years ago about a trip to Tulum - youtu.be/wKQAONPWJKc?t=108

It was something I didn't realize I needed until we moved into the van. Those years, nature became our home. We parked alongside it, spent our days exploring, and when we found ourselves in a city for too long, it called us back immediately. And ever since that realization, we've known that we are at our happiest and most grounded when we choose to place ourselves as close to the outdoors as we can.
Right now living off-grid in a cottage in the jungle, we definitely are in the midst of the natural world constantly, but after a while, I start feeling this pull towards the mountains and the ocean. We woke up on Friday and set out for a day with so many of my favorite things. We hiked, saw incredible views, met up with friends, spent time in the water, played with our puppy, ate yummy food, and even played board games (though I have to admit, I don't think Catan is my favorite). I'm so grateful for a healthy body during this pregnancy that lets me keep exploring and doing the things I love with those I love :)
Hope you enjoy this one!

Keep in Touch:http://instagram.com/wildweroamLous Bread Is Making Us New Friends : )Wild We Roam2022-01-30 | What has your experience making friends as an adult been like? Lou and I have moved to a lot of different places over the years and have slowly found our rhythm when it comes to meeting new people and finding our community, but every time we do it at the beginning I get a little nervous. Are we going to be able to find people that we just click with? Life in a new place can be isolating at first, but when things start to fall into place and friendships start blossoming life becomes so much richer.
One of the things that I've realized as we've set up life in new places is the importance of experiences bringing people together. When you actually do things together whether it's going on a hike, going camping, cooking together, playing board games... these activities create memories. I know this isn't rocket science but it's so easy to get into a pattern of just meeting someone for coffee or a drink and as an adult, you don't have the luxury of all that downtime of school life, so you might not see someone for a while. Sure you could have a great conversation, but finding someone with a shared passion/hobby means you can actually create regular opportunities to do things together. Go to a yoga class. Create a book club. Get creative!
Lately, Lou's sourdough hobby has been such a beautiful way for us to connect with new friends. Trading sourdough for puppy sitting or sourdough in this case for a TON of beautiful ripe fruit. Handmade gifts even little things are so appreciated and can bring you closer than you expected to those around you!
I'm feeling super grateful to be at the beginning of a bunch of beautiful new friendships and can't wait to see how life unfolds in the coming months!

Most people would have probably just slept on an air mattress, but I wanted to see if sleeping on the floor for a week would have any surprising benefits. Would I feel taller? Would my back feel stronger? Would it be ridiculously uncomfortable? It feels like anytime we stay anywhere overnight I'm always wishing that the mattress was firmer, so I figured, why not see if I could find an easy, portable, sleep solution that I could recreate whenever we weren't at home? Gardening is a skill that takes time - you have to get to know your land, learn what grows well, what animals inhabit the same space, and then as seasons shift everything changes once again. We have a LOT to learn about growing in Hawaii, but the thing we've figured out so far is that this land was built for the taro plant. Here in Hawaii, taro is called kalo, and the baby plant is called huli. The leaves are a rich sources of nutrients from protein to Vitamin C and Vitamin A. The tuber at the bottom of the plant is called the corm and is a hearty, starchy, staple food. Hawaiians use it to make the traditional food called poi, which we still have yet to see made in person, but hopefully, we can experience that one day soon!
We are so grateful to Ola Mau Farms (instagram.com/ola_mau_farms) for their generous gift of 18 huli stock so that we could replenish our garden. We're looking forward to their call to come to spend some days working on the farm as a trade for this incredible plant.
And of course still grateful for the time we spent with Daniel and his wife Alohi and all the wisdom they imparted to us during our quick trip. If you want to see the video we made with them here's a link - youtu.be/bmQxvqtt5qo

Leaving our Penelope in a foreign country after our unexpected change of heart was a complicated decision for me and Lou. On the one hand, we knew that we clearly saw a different future for ourselves than the one we had been working towards, and then, on the other hand, all this effort we had poured into Penelope... well it had to stay aboard. We knew we wouldn't get reimbursed for those 100s of hours and 1,000s of dollars (even when we were putting them in winter after winter). That's the thing with working on old boats... you're working on them for yourself because it's not really an appreciating asset. But the dream comes together when you find someone who can see that hard work, appreciate it, and give it another life, and that's just how this story unfolded. We are so happy that Penelope is going to keep on going in her bluewater sailing adventures, but we're also so happy that it's not going to be us on the boat!!! Instead, we've found a life that embraces all the things we love and we're just beyond grateful to get to share all the ups and downs along the way with you.

We might not have had electricity, internet, or cell service at our house these past few days but luckily sunshine, beaches, and open skies are just an hour and a half drive away. Spending some time exploring the island with Lou and Freja was exactly what my heart and soul needed after being cooped up in the rain for so many days in a row. Watching Freja get stronger and calmer out in the world was such a treat too. It means we can start exploring Maui much more and really throw ourselves completely into island life.
If there are any other parts of the island you’d like to see in our videos please let us know in the comments! Snorkel beach and hiking recommendations would be especially helpful :)

The only tricky thing is that we live off-grid, so the rainy season also means lots of generator time and without a dryer, it means LOTS of laundry piling up.
Luckily for us, the rain subsided for a few days giving us a glimpse of sunshine which was very good for the soul and for our laundry situation :) Hope you enjoy this glimpse into jungle life as we prepare the house for the holidays with DIY wreath making, cooking up a holiday feast, and of course lots of footage of our growing puppy.

We're so excited that the day is finally here to share this project that we've been working on for the last 4 months with you! We partnered with Influence for Impact, a company dedicated to making ethical clothing with online content creators, to bring these illustrations to life and it really feels like a dream come true. For as long as I can remember, Lou and I have been talking about how special it would be to create our own clothing line, but we thought it would be something we did a long way down the road. And Taylor and the whole team at Influence For Impact are the real reason that this whole thing was possible, so we just wanted to say how grateful we are for their support!
At the moment, Lou and I don't have the bandwidth or skills to find quality ethical fabric suppliers, factories, and warehouses, and all that goes into creating a clothing label from scratch. So when the team at Influence for Impact reached out, it was like a lightbulb moment. We had just arrived in Hawaii, so many big changes were happening in our life, and it felt like we were ready to take on a big new project and they were the perfect team to do it with.

I just wanted to take a second and say thank you to everyone in this incredible community. Your support of our creativity over the years has truly changed our life. It is so wild to think about us in our tiny NYC apartment, in our early 20s with jobs we weren't happy with, dreaming of working together, creating together, and living life on our terms.
Seeing all the archival footage of the different adventures we've had over the last few years really made my heart to full. I remember how nervous I was starting out the Inktober challenge. Even sharing my drawings on this channel had my stomach in knots. But now I am so much more comfortable knowing that being the best at something isn't a pre-requisite to enjoying something. In fact, focusing on the outcome of creativity steals so much of the joy for me. Instead of putting my energy towards the creative process, how I feel during and after carving out some time for myself, that is what makes me happy, not critiquing whatever I made. (I guess that turns out to be tip number 6 hahah)
I could talk about creativity and the creative process forever, so thank you for letting me chat with you about it for 15 minutes. I hope you enjoyed it and maybe even feel inspired to go make something yourself!

I just finished watching this video and it's been three days since Lou filmed this and WOW has Freja's behavior completely taken a turn for the better :) She really learned so much in just one day - how to better self-regulate, how to enjoy playing on her own while we sit on the futon outside, and my favorite thing of all - how not to be so nippy when all I want to do is pet her!!! Her walking even has gotten much better since this experiment. I feel like this little working line GSD is finding her rthym in our family and we're so grateful to have her. She makes our life so much more entertaining and rewarding at the same time.
The only thing I realized while watching this is that I feel like we could have done a better job filming the chaos of life which has been the last few weeks, but filming those moments can be so difficult. I'll even admit to a few times where her nibbles got out of hand, blood was shed, and I was left in tears. We've had lot of moments of letting her play off-leash in the backyard only to have her run to our neighbor's house and not come back when we call for her. And of course the usual getting clean sheets covered in mud, chewing on furniture, ripping clothes... you know, standard puppy behavior. But I swear something happened during her time with Lou in this video and I am BEYOND grateful for the transformation.
She's back to her normal routine of lots of play and nap time in her crates, but she's also been enjoying more chill time on the porch. We still have a bit more work to do getting her used to being in the house and not wanting to spend all that time taking her toys and chewing them on our bed, but a girl can dream!!
Oh also, here's a link to the dog training video that Lou mentioned during the video: youtube.com/watch?v=yr1olzgidMw It was super helpful for us!
This stage of puppyhood is so fleeting, and I especially felt that when I saw how tiny she was the first day we got her only 2 months ago. We're really trying to soak up every adorable minute. Hope you enjoyed this one and can handle all the cuteness :)
Big hugs, Dana

Leaving our sailing dreams behind, we decided to embrace a life that we hoped was better suited to the things that make us happy. We still wanted to be surrounded by nature, but with more peace and quiet. More time for creativity. We hoped for ease of living that mixed adventure and comfort at the same time.
And now after moving across the world, getting a puppy, we're about to embark on what probably will be the biggest adventure of our lives - starting a family. At 14 weeks pregnant, the thought of having a little baby of our own is sinking in and I'm feeling more introspective than ever. This video is a little hodgepodge of a bunch of moments from this week - surfing, drawing, gardening, baking bread, and I hope you enjoy it.
Also, I feel like this little library journal might need to have some videos entirely dedicated to it. What do you think??? Any ideas for a name for the series? I'm thinking it could be something like the old travel journals, but instead it would be on a 3 or 4 week rotation connected to the books I check out library books. This video was filmed over the last few months and now I'm only a few days away from entering my second trimester. I still can't believe the shock I felt finding out I was pregnant. It's the craziest feeling! But just a little current update: I'm doing great and the baby is healthy and growing every day. Finally got a little more energy back and my food aversions seem to be gone woot woot! I've even got a little baby bump that I've been sneakily trying to hide on camera!
I've watched so many other Telling My Husband I'm Pregnant videos and each of them brings such a big smile to my face and I hope this video does the same for you. We had so much fun sharing the news with our family and friends and I'm so happy that we'll have this video to always look back on to remember such a special time in our lives. I wish we had filmed their faces because they were SO surprised and it was just the best moment.
Is there anyone else out there who's pregnant right now too? Anyone who's been pregnant what symptoms did you have that made you think you might be?
Also want to take a second and say thank you to our Patrons for keeping the baby news a secret!
Big hugs, Dana

When Lou and I heard about the story of this Hawaiian family's farm - how they are battling to save it from developers after 7 years of restoring it back to life... after years of weekly community workshops teaching locals how to engage with the land, grow food with ancient farming techniques, bring poi back as a staple Hawaiian food... after decades of fighting to not only protect Hawaiian agriculture land, the rights of farmers, but also rebuild a culture of people connected to where their food comes from, well, we had to share their story with you. I hope that it moves you in the same way it touched our hearts. This world has so much to learn from indigenous farmers. This project is so much bigger than just one family farm. The work that their non-profit, Hui Aloha Aina Momona, does is incredible for Hawaii and an inspiration for the world.
This farm needs your help today. With each dollar that you donate you are getting them closer to their mission of taking full ownership of this farm, so that they can set up their farm school and leverage everything they have learned here and share it with their local community and the world at large.

To be present in the kitchen when we’re making a meal or enjoy a hike together, but getting a puppy has helped us throw ourselves into the present moment more than I could have ever expected. I think it’s because that’s where she lives entirely. There’s no overthinking things or worrying about the past with dogs. They’re just there. And it’s been a really beautiful energy to be around and pushed us to grow both individually and as a couple in the best way. I feel like this video really captures the magic of the life we’re building right now and I am so happy we have it for our memories. Just watching it now (I think we filmed this two weeks ago) and Freja’s already grown so much. She looks like such a little nugget and now she’s already 18 pounds! Anyways, hope you enjoy this day in the life and hope we can show you much cooler surfing clips one day hahaha I swear it felt more like a wave than a puddle in the moment :)
Big hugs, Dana

Waking up in the middle of the night, multiple training sessions a day, vet appointments, constant potty training, it is a whirlwind of activity but we are loving it! This week we tried to capture what our time with Freja has been like--bit by bit we have been clawing our way back to a normal routine, but every day is different with this little one : )
Part of the beauty of getting a dog is the fact that caring for another life form helps you stay present in your life and not get too distracted by digital devices. In preparation for raising a working line german shepherd, we read a bunch of books by the monks of skete which I would highly recommend to anyone thinking about getting a dog, or hoping to train their dog a bit more. The books have a very practical but also spiritual focus, which we have been trying to embrace in our daily training sessions with Freja. We still have a lot to learn, but its been pretty incredible to see who quickly Freja has been learning and growing. You blink for a second, and somehow shes already little bigger, fiercer, faster, and stronger!
Cheers, Lou (&Dana)

The following video may not be suitable for children or young viewers; if you are watching as a family please skip from about 9:30 to 12:00 and have an adult pre-watch the video entirely before deciding what you feel is appropriate for younger viewers.
The story of us getting a puppy turns out to have been a complicated one, years in the making, but ultimately one of the happiest moments of our lives. We feel so grateful to get to welcome little Freja into our family and look forward to building a strong bond together. We haven’t had her long but I can already tell that she is going to be as fierce as her name suggests, full of fire and a deep desire to work every day and learn. She takes a nap for less than an hour and then bounces back as if her batteries are fully charged. If you’ve been watching us since the van build you probably saw this coming because Alfie was a special dog, but if you’re disappointed we didn’t start our pack of dogs by rescuing a dog from an animal shelter I hope this video will at least explain some of the thinking behind getting a working line German shepherd for personal protection. The working line has a number of differences to traditional German shepherds that I wasn’t able to explain in the video, but there’s a ton of information online about them if you’d like to learn more! We’ve already enlisted the help of a professional dog training program to get Freja ready for her role, and the progress she has been making is pretty incredible to watch. Our routine is still coming together (it's been a bit of a hurricane experience getting acclimated to having a puppy in our lives) but we typically spend 1-2 hours per day training her—starting with 5-10 minute sessions at first and then slowly building up to 30-minute chunks.
If the decision was entirely up to Dana, we would have rescued a dog instead by heading down to the humane society and finding a nice Maui mutt ; ) But for me, I really wanted to be 100% certain that our first dog would be up to the challenge of protecting our family—I grew up with rescue dogs, and while its an incredibly rewarding experience, not every rescue is suited for personal protection as a consequence of the trauma they may have suffered prior to ending up in a shelter. I’m hopeful that by starting our dog training education with a highly trainable dog like Freja we can gain the skills necessary to rescue less fortunate dogs in the future with a much higher chance of success.
Cheers, LouThe Garden ProjectWild We Roam2021-09-26 | What if we could grow all our own food? This is a question that Lou and I have been talking about for years and while this is a MASSIVE goal, every goal starts with a small step and for us setting up this garden bed was exactly that. We have so much to learn when it comes to gardening: which plants like growing together? how can we get the most out of our garden bed? do we need worms? how can we make the most efficient compost? But all these questions have us so excited to be here in a place with such an incredible tradition of respecting the land and with so many incredibly knowledgeable people to learn from. I'm in the process of finding a few farms that we can volunteer at/study under so that we can gain more local knowledge and are really looking forward to sharing that experience with you in the coming months. We're especially hopeful that we can start growing taro/kalo in our little backyard, but for now, I hope you enjoy a few beautiful calm days in a garden that I'm happy to report has already sprouted!!
Big hugs, Dana (& Lou)

Keep in Touch: on http://instagram.com/wildweroamWe Moved To The JungleWild We Roam2021-09-19 | It feels so nice to have you finally up to speed in our life!! The last 4 months especially have been a whirlwind for us, but ever since we arrived in Hawaii on August 1st things have been falling into place with such ease. We’ve met the kindest people from the two locals who helped us fix our truck at the beach, to the man who runs the hardware store who’s been helping us figure out how to get our garden running to the old friends we’ve been able to reconnect with. Our landlord has really taken the cake though with his welcoming effort: picking us from the airport, giving us fruit from his prized mango tree, to letting us make this place a home and build our own garden. We’ve said it a lot lately, that it’s hard to put a feeling into words, but being here really is impossible to describe. After so much change over the last few years, moving from van life, back to my parents’ house, then embracing boat life, it feels like we’ve been in a constant state of transition, and for the last few weeks we’ve been soaking up the slow life more than ever before.
I’m guessing that some of you might be wondering how we picked Hawaii? It’s so far from our families and weren’t we so excited to be home? And have we thought about our impact as non-native white people moving here?
Well these are all really big questions and ones we have been thinking about a lot and with time I think we’ll find a way to express ourselves elegantly on the subject. We really considered moving back to the East Coast and trying to build out a farm there. But over the past few years we’ve realized that for us, while it would be so nice to be close to loved ones, the idea of building and working in the winter outside on a homestead didn’t appeal to us. We spent the last two winters doing a lot of manual labor outside and craved warmth and sunshine the whole time. We’ve had the luxury of experiencing a lot of different corners of the world during our travels and knew that for us to thrive we wanted to try and settle down in a place where health, nature, and the ocean are central aspects of life. Lou and I have been talking with friends and family about moving to Hawaii to set up a homestead since our Berlin days and realized during our ocean crossing that we didn’t want to wait any longer for our biggest dream.
As for our impact as non-native people moving here, we are still figuring out how to be helpful members of this community. I don’t think this is something that happens overnight. It’s a relationship that takes time to build trust and we’re learning more and more every day being here. Our goal right now is to study the situation in person, and then find ways to address these issues head on, from a place of respect for the land and the people here. For now, we’re trying to be responsible and respectful residents and listening to the people we meet here on the ground—and so far, the people and the island have given us the kindest, warmest welcome.
Oh, also we plan to start volunteering at local farms, so we can not only help but also learn from people who have such a long history with this land. I’ve already started at a local animal sanctuary where I’m gaining confidence with taking care of big animals like pigs and goats and horses. One of the lessons we learned from the boat experience is to try to ease into things slower. Instead of jumping in and trying to get a big loan on a house, buying a bunch of animals, or launching some sort of other crazy venture, for once, we’re easing into this (at least we're trying to haha). Renting for now, learning to garden in a small garden bed, but believe me we’re still dreaming big :) We have really high hopes for what we can do living here and can’t wait to share them with you. I’m really looking forward to reading all your comments and hearing what you think of this big decision. We have so much to learn so if you know of any good resources on Hawaii, on intersectional permaculture/environmentalism, and on tropical gardening, I’d love to read them!

And if you seriously are considering send us an email at wildweroam@gmail.com and we're happy to give you more information.
I hope this video captures some of the thought processes that went into deciding to sell our boat and ending the boat life chapter, but to be honest it's hard to put it all into words. It was a decision that involved a ton of factors from covid not ending to global weather patterns, and ultimately, we decided to leave the boat because we are both just so much more excited for the next chapter and realized we'd gotten everything we wanted out of boat life. I often wonder if I could go back, if I would change anything, and its a tough question to answer because on the one hand, I know there are little tweaks that could have been super helpful, but ultimately, everything that happened led us to where we are now, and life has never been better, so if that's what led to this next chapter, then I wouldn't change a thing.
Next week's video will get into where we are now and what our new dreams are!
Thanks so much for all the support! Lou (&Dana)

Ocean sailing, on the other hand, has been on our minds for far longer. We'd spend nights talking about sailing into the unknown... asking ourselves how we would deal with facing the ocean in all her vastness? how would we deal with different worst-case scenarios? But at some point, the preparation portion of our story ended and it was time to go for it or let the ocean dream go.
Even though Lou and I have known each other for over 10 years, during these seven and a half days in the Atlantic, we learned how to rely on each other in such a profound way that only comes out of pure necessity. I'm so grateful for our time out there because it's changed our relationship for the better and I know that we will always have that experience to draw on in difficult times when we need extra strength.
And we're also so grateful for each and every one of you, for this community, and for this opportunity to share our adventure with you. I know we've been gone for quite a while on this platform, but we are so thankful for your love, support, and patience while we've been having the wildest, most insane summer of our lives (and also battling a LOT of technical difficulties that made editing impossible).
We have so many more updates to share with you, but those will have to wait until next week. Until then, we hope that you fall in love with the ocean while watching this video, and as we did out in the Atlantic, and gain an entirely new respect for her power and her beauty.
Sending you all our love, Dana & Lou

You know those days when you go in with a plan, run into a little roadblock, and have to completely rethink everything? When it starts out at 50 degrees Fahrenheit and ends up at 30? Well, we had our first surprise problem aboard Penelope this week when we discovered a hole in our bilge where water has been collecting, and it looks like we have our work cut out for us fixing it up!
