Lets Code Santas Present Drop 2 in AMOS (AMIGA) - The Sequel to Last Years Game
updated
The crazy device, when setup in Workbench on the Amiga allowed you to format a double floppy disk with upto 984k capacity, or if you were lucky enough to have a high density drive, up to 1968k!
I did actually manage to hack DiskFlashback to store 1.066MB by going up-to 13 sectors per track by really speeding up the writing. It worked fine with the PC drive from Windows, but the Amiga was unable to read it, and woul never have been able to write back to it. Interesting though
You can still download it from Aminet here: aminet.net/package/disk/misc/Diskspr3

There are so many changes you could make to this specific to your project. For example you could add the ability to have multiple layers of tiles, or maybe store all the levels within a single file. You could add options for where the player starts, or the game enemy's appear, and then there's the ability for objects in some tiles to affect or control objects n a different tile. But this is a good basic place to start from.

One thing that slightly bothers me about the results is i was unable to reproduce the iPhone results when showing it to someone. I don't know if it was the way i was moving the disk or the speed or maybe the data was just weaker somehow but still a little annoying - good job i caught it doing it on camera!

I've already got a Pistorm in my Amiga 1200, and this time, I'd like to keep it real, so, I ordered a Dicke Olga, which includes an MC68030 CPU running at 50Mhz with 128MB of fast ram, quite the upgrade!
In this video I go through the steps of installing it, and configuring it with a new M.2 drive, as well as an FPU and a CD-ROM too!
This is a revised video that combines my original with the followup into one seamless video - The MapROM section is now much improved

Now I could just make something simple, but why not have some fun... so I've designed the most crazy of contraptions to achieve this task.
This video, compressed to around 20 minutes, actually contains several hours of construction footage and that doesn't include the print time either! It's not exactly a small project!

Sadly however, mine was missing the controller and so in the video we'll reverse engineer it and build our own, as well as see if the card works and give it a quick test.
Edit: I've now been sent some great photos of the inside of the controller PCB

A while back, I discovered a device that you could plug into the external floppy drive port of your Amiga that supposedly would protect any disk inserted from becoming infected with boot block or boot sector viruses.
Curious how such a simple device could achieve this feat I decided to put it to the test.... and wow, was I surprised...

This year I bring you Bunny’s "Boing Ball" Bounty, a speed-run challenge where you need to collect the eggs as quickly as possible.
I took inspiration for this game from a hedgehog themed game you may have played before and I wanted to see if I could achieve the same effect on AMOS.
I've included the entire game source code on the same disk image (ADF) as the actual game.
See if you can get onto the scoreboard with the fastest time for clearing the most levels!
This isn't the most detailed of videos, but a lot of the topics have been previously covered so check out my older videos!
You can download the game, which includes full AMOS source code from my itch.io page at robsmith-dev.itch.io/bb
To submit or view a speed run please visit bb.robsmithdev.co.uk

I'm going to put it through a gruling array of tests to see how it handles them, and how this could help protect your Amiga from any power supply damage.
A yes, it is possible to get more than power from a standard USB socket - The PowerIQ standard on Anker devices seems to support it, but it seems to be an unofficial USB standard.
This video is not sponsored, I purchased the PowerShark for my own use. Also, these are the results of my experiments and you should check to see if the product meets your requirements.

Recently the BlueSCSI V2 supports the Pi Pico with WIFI and code was added to emulate the DaynaPort ethernet device (MacOS). So i created a driver for the Amiga, and had to work around a number of issues along the way

Its a fairly easy mod, although theres some desoldering required which isn't the easiest without a desolder station and good soldering skills.
This mod could also be used on Amiga 500s too. Might have overdone the montages again!

Back then I was only able to program in AMOS, and so I created a small demo as a kind of proof of concept.
However it wasn't very good, and not very practical and so I moved on.
Some 30ish years later I started creating these Santas Present Drop games.
In Santas Present Drop 1, you helped Santa drop the presents down chimneys as he flew over numerous rooftops.
In Santas Present Drop 2, Santa was unhappy that presents were being delivered to the wrong people, so he installed the Gift-o-Matic 5000.
So what about the third game? Well, "Whilst flying over the Alps, the contraption exploded scattering presents all over the mountains. Luckly however, Santa had his skis with him. Your job is to guide Santa to collect as many presents as possible within the time allowed."
I wanted to create a 1st person driving style game, in AMOS again. Knowing a lot more now and armed with a load of tricks and hacks, in this video I'll show you how I not only managed four layers of background scrolling parallex, but also ended up with a fairly fast road-like experience whilst running fairly smoothly on a standard Amiga 500.
This game is available for download, and includes the full AMOS source code. You will need the AMCAF and Turbo Plus extensions in order to run them.

Hop to the Top - Bunny's Revenge!
It's a turn-by-turn procedulally generated puzzle game with over 68 billion levels!
The game features an online high score table as well as a local one
If your Amiga has an Internet connection you can submit your score from within the game (bsdsockets.library) If not, you can use the code shown and enter it on the website manually.
Because all games are procedulally generated, its possible to re-play the same game, or someone elses game, and these games are shared via the high score table.
More information about the game at rabbit.robsmithdev.co.uk
This game features music by Virgill (soundcloud.com/virgill)
...and Graphics by John Bintz (theindustriousrabbit.com)
There will be a followup video explainig how some of the game was built.
The game will be free (donations welcome) and run on A500 with 1MB of RAM. (A1200 recommended)

So in this video we're going to check the SMD ceramic capacitors to see if one of them is at fault.
Don't worry, I've a fast and easy way to find the culprit, and spoiler.... this time we do!
If you are planning on recapping an A1200 be careful with C407. It has a different orientation between Rev 1 and Rev 2 boards!
There are several companies that will perform this recapping for you, and if don't have a huge amount of soldering experience it may be best left to an expert.

This video (with permission) is from the stream where he discovered it, and his reaction!
The stream was a lot of fun with a real positive vibe. Weird *me* being the celebrity! Unfortunately I couldn't stay for the entire stream, but I was invited to join a future stream for a live chat, and I kinda feel like I made a friend! If you want to see that interview, you'll have to subscribe to his twitch channel: twitch.tv/middleditch

I'll show you a little about how it's built and some of its more interesting features. I'm not making or selling these for people, it's purely a one off, although there is the possability I may release all the design files for it in the future.
The backup station can backup floppy disks to ADF or SCP and uses three greaseweazle boards to control three floppy drives, and the user interface is controlled bu a few arcade buttons connected to an Arduino.

We control it with an Arduino including, adding a joystick for pan and tilt movement, as well as an LCD display to help set and adjust various other settings.
Hopefully this will improve the quality of camera footage in later videos. This isn't really meant as a build tutorial but there's some interesting things to learn regardless.
Since making this video I've also obtained a 1080p12xS2 model. Whilst it has a much higher zoom, I don't feel like the picture quality is as good. Maybe it's the older firmware in it. Either way I've updated the source code to support both. I've also included PDF manuals which now explain the wiring!

I wanted this to be a platform game about rabbits and chocolate eggs, and controlled by a joystick or keyboard.
I couldn't think of a title either, but with the help of ChatGPT, Hop to the Top was created!
Slightly creaky voice, but then it is the time of year for colds and flus!
👉 This tutorial and game covers the following:
• Double Buffering / Screen Swap
• Tile-Based Game Engine
• Smooth Vertical Scrolling
• Sprite Animation including AMAL (Amos Animation Language)
• Joystick and Keyboard Input
• Background Rainbow Effects (COPPER)
• Sound Samples
• Game Music

Presented with a radio control car and the MacGyver theme tune I was asked to make a remote control door opener/closer.
Sadly, the car wasn't up to the job, but for the price thats hardly suprising.
In this video I go through a few stages of trying to get this to work, and yes, it is a little silly and pointless, but that's part of the fun.

So, in this video we learn how to repair the monitor by replacing the power switch and also investigate the cause of the issue.
The replacement part came from ebay by simply searching for "CM8833 power switch"
Caution: Care must be taken when working with CRTs as even when disconnected they may still contain extremly high voltages.

I made a few mistakes based on poor understanding along the way, but that lead to some useful results. I've also tried to add some science into this too (I hope I got it right!) I have two successful alternatives to Hydrogen Peroxide, and one very important discovery, which if I hadn't lost my way down the rabbit hole I would have never found, and knowing this helps understand why the yellowing occurs.
Note: The methods used in these expleriment may cause damage to the plastics.
