3 large and very illegal LEGO builds Brick Bending 2023-11-09 | These builds are the mega-sized, and strangely much more ridiculously fragile sibling builds of a simple design in a previous video: youtu.be/Y9ruALhxJgsIllegal building techniques come in many varieties, and some of them can actually make your builds much stronger (due to the stress they contain). These incomplete connections do the opposite. There’s very little stress on the builds at all—too little in fact—so fragility is the name of the game. The 1x3 plate version of this design is actually quite sturdy. It’s the weight of these larger builds pulling on those incomplete connections that make these designs so challenging. Beyond just the fragility, this video turned out to be surprisingly difficult. Between being out of practice, filming with a new camera, and a couple of airplane flyovers I didn’t notice during filming, it made for an unusually frustrating experience. I thought it only fitting to share many of those failures with you--the culminating fail being the building of the interlocking rings, which turned out to be impossible with the light and camera rigging in the way. So I had to work a little off screen magic off. A small but VERY illegal LEGO build Brick Bending 2023-10-10 | In full disclosure, this build is definitely difficult in that final step of assembly. The alignment of the plates must be close to perfect, and even then there’s a lot of struggle to force the pieces into place. The fascinating thing is that ultimately there's no stress in this build--these are incomplete connections. So in the classic sense this build is VERY illegal, and yet the bricks are 100% fine. It's just somewhat fragile.I also didn’t show some 'off camera' work to tweak a few of the plates that didn’t quite line up (only because it would be boring to watch). That being said, I don’t know if there’s a cooler LEGO wheel that is this small with so few pieces. Pushing LEGO wedge plates to their limit Brick Bending 2022-12-07 | This is a similar theme to a few of my past builds, but taken to new level with A-shaped LEGO wedge plates. As the outtakes at the end showed, it was challenging getting that final connection without making the build longer. But the longer this type of build, the more 'play' it has within it, and the less satisfying I find it. I'm always striving for the stress limit a given build can take while still being solid and stable. All that being said, you can bet this won't be the last helical torus I create--and I definitely want to go bigger. 😁 I should also note the special guest appearance of my A-Shaped Wedge Wheel toward the end. LEGO wedge pieces are VERY weird (and fragile) Brick Bending 2022-06-15 | Apologies. No rolling. No spinning with this one. Not a chance.It’s safe to say that this design will stay together without a problem, at rest, on a flat surface, indefinitely. But moving it's ridiculously fragile unless the curve is perfectly aligned, and in general it won’t tolerate much disturbance at all. There’s just something special about adding curved bricks to a bending LEGO build. And yes, this could also be the baldest LEGO tire ever. It's ironic that the most tire-like build I've ever made is very mediocre at rolling. 😂 I could probably tighten the build to remove the little bit of the play that it currently has (which would help) but this kind of ‘thick’ bend gets tricky when there’s too much stress. And that extra flex is really only noticeable when it’s rolling—which I really only do for these videos. Youve never seen a LEGO build move like this Brick Bending 2022-01-22 | There's an obvious parallel between the final iteration of this build, and a previous creation of mine: youtu.be/DJvIrb3ionsThey're both helices, but the primary difference is structural. The slinky of squares is much smaller, and fairly fragile--and adding layers to that build didn't particularly help. This build is very solid, and if I were to make the helix with five or six layer coils it would be even sturdier. It's also structurally dynamic. The final helix has a 23 pointed star in each coil, but there's no reason why I couldn't make those coils 22 points, or 8, or anything in between. And the way that energy moves through the build is just crazy--it looks almost alive. My daughter found it quite disgusting, and I can't say that I blame her. There's a reason I've been calling this the sunflower worm. 😂 And I already know how I want to scale this monstrosity up! The secret art of LEGO origami? Brick Bending 2022-01-15 | Is this origami? As the word origami means 'folding paper' it doesn't exactly fit. Perhaps we could call this 'brick folding'--one of the many lost brick bending arts. I honestly don't fully grok how or why this works. But when I discovered it, I knew I had something strange, confusing, and very special--and now I finally get to share it : )In short this build primarily consists of two simple patterns of 1x4 plates that are mirror images of each other. When you interweave them together with hinged connections they are able to tightly fold up, and then expand, all fairly easily. All the extra bits around the outside edges just help foster the illusion of squareness in its compact form. I hope you enjoy. When LEGO bricks utterly surprise you Brick Bending 2022-01-08 | I started this build just before Shang-Chi was released but the build made me realize that my studio space was too small to film something this big. Even now this build pushed the limits of my upgraded studio and showed me that I'm going to need to upgrade again before 2022 is out. But I'm always looking for a reason to escalate 😁You can also see that this build is so large that it starts to sag under its own weight. It measures in at 46in (117cm) but it only has 3200 pieces, so I think it's about as big as I can build using this technique for this style of design. Free standing it will squish at the bottom, and hanging it will elongate through the middle. But don't worry--as these builds get even bigger I have more tricks up my sleeve. Bending LEGO plates to my will Brick Bending 2021-12-24 | This build is the third in a series. Those issues partially stem from the filming process, but mostly it's the fact that the design isn't optimal, i.e. it needs to be improved and reincarnated. But I’m trying hard to not let perfection get in the way of showing you really interesting builds. A couple of notes:1. This build is 'studs in' because its curvature is fairly high, and this building technique bends more in that direction. It makes for an interesting look, although I'd love to see how big I have to make it in order to have the build be 'studs out'. 2. There was no hiding the fact that these plates have been part of a high stress build for many years. This meant that they have warped slightly in the direction of that stress (although you can't really tell by looking at them individually) and the plates have also lost some ‘clutch power’ (i.e. how snugly the studs fit inside other pieces). However neither of these facts are an issue once the build is fully assembled. For builders who reuse their bricks over and over again, this degradation of the bricks is a non-starter, and I can appreciate that—it would make their normal building life difficult/unpleasant. For me, I am creating an icosahedron, and it will always be an icosahedron—so the warping of the bricks ultimately doesn’t matter. You can see that it doesn’t really want to hold together as it’s constructed, but once all the pieces are in place it does manage to hold itself together quite nicely. But here on YT I lean into Bach when I need music, so this is now indeed a very strange concatenation of things my mind 🤪Note that this is an extremely fragile build as it only uses a single type of plate, and that plate doesn't connect to itself as well as the two types of plates I use in my other similar builds. This LEGO build is staggering Brick Bending 2021-12-09 | Once upon a time I tried to make a 40 layer version of this design--but it turned out the finished build wouldn't fit through a standard doorway. 😂I give you four staggered circles. Here are the specs for each: 6 layers - circumference: 50 staggered 1x2 plates - diameter: 22cm12 layers - circumference: 80 staggered 1x2 plates - diameter: 33cm18 layers - circumference: 124 staggered 1x2 plates - diameter: 51cm24 layers - circumference: 177 staggered 1x2 plates - diameter: 72cmPiece Breakdown (in 1x2 plates):6 layers (300), 12 layers (960), 18 layers (2232), 24 layers (4248)You'll note that the inner and outer circumference (in staggered 1x2 plates) is the same on each build--which might strike you as odd. This is because the build can compress and expand. The six layer build (unbent) has a length of ~56cm when compressed, and ~66cm when expanded.This is build is so simple, and yet the results are so striking.
