SR 167 Completion Project: New diverging diamond interchange over I-5 - final girder set wsdot 2024-10-15 | SR 167 Completion Project crews finished setting 15 bridge girders over I-5 on Oct. 13, 2024. The girders form the backbone of a new bridge that will carry the new SR 167 tolled expressway over I-5 in Fife and establishes a portion of the future SR 167/I-5 diverging diamond interchange. Each of the 15 bridge girders weigh 277,000 pounds and are 222 feet 9 inches long, spanning the entire width of I-5 at the Fife curve. Two cranes placed in both northbound and southbound lanes of I-5 lifted and set the girders into place. The girders are manufactured by Concrete Technology Corporation in Tacoma. The SR 167 Completion Project builds 6 miles of new tolled highway between Puyallup and the Port of Tacoma. The new highway is being built in stages. The portion currently under construction between I-5 and the Port of Tacoma is scheduled to open in 2026. The next stage is scheduled to begin construction in 2025 and construction work on the last stage will begin in 2026. The entire project is planned for completion by 2029.
SR 167 Completion Project: 2024 girder setting and bridge demolition wsdot 2024-10-08 | SR 167 Completion Project crews began setting 15 bridge girders over I-5 on Oct. 4 and 5, 2024. The girders will soon form the backbone of a new bridge that will carry the new SR 167 tolled expressway over I-5 in Fife. This new bridge will be located immediately north of the existing Wapato Way East bridge. SR 167 Completion Project - 70th Avenue Bridge Demolition wsdot 2024-10-01 | SR 167 Completion Project crews began tearing down the old 70th Avenue East bridge on Friday Sept. 27, 2024 and Saturday Sept. 28, 2024. Excavators fitted with claw and jackhammer-like attachments broke and removed pieces of the bridge and bulldozers and sweepers removed debris from the roadway. Crews will finalize the demolition through mid-Oct. 2024. The 70th Avenue bridge has not been open to travelers since 2021, when the new Wapato Way East bridge opened.The SR 167 Completion Project builds 6 miles of new tolled highway between Puyallup and the Port of Tacoma. Progress on hybrid-electric conversion of ferry Wenatchee wsdot 2024-09-19 | A lot of work has been done to update Wenatchee over the past year. But there’s still more to do as we upgrade its aging propulsion system and convert it to hybrid-electric power. We initially estimated this work to take about a year, but we now expect Wenatchee to be back in service in summer 2025.
Newest section of the Children of the Sun Trail opens to public wsdot 2024-09-12 | The newest section of the Children of the Sun Trail, which parallels the North Spokane Corridor wsdot.wa.gov/construction-planning/major-projects/north-spokane-corridor, officially opened to the public during a community celebration and ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, June 21, 2024. The trail was extended two miles, from East Columbia Avenue in the Hillyard neighborhood, to East Euclid Avenue. Work in the next few years, in conjunction with part of the Spokane River Crossing project wsdot.wa.gov/construction-planning/search-projects/us-395-nsc-spokane-river-crossing, will connect the Children of the Sun Trail to the Centennial Trail along the Spokane River and to Spokane Community College just to the south.
SR 520 Montlake Project: Montlake Blvd closure + opening of new movements in Montlake neighborhood wsdot 2024-09-11 | The SR 520 Montlake Project has a milestone weekend the weekend of Sept. 13-15! SR 520 Portage Bay Bridge and Roanoke Lid Project Groundbreaking wsdot 2024-09-05 | On Friday, Aug. 16, WSDOT, in partnership with design-builder Skanska, broke ground on the Portage Bay Bridge and Roanoke Lid Project – the final major project in the SR 520 corridor. This project will complete the SR 520’s east-to-west reconstruction from I-405 to I-5, bringing critical safety, mobility, and environmental improvements to one of the busiest corridors in the Puget Sound region.Held at the Seattle Yacht Club, the groundbreaking brought together elected officials, tribal representatives, government agencies and community partners to celebrate this important milestone. While the event marked the start of project construction, it also provided an opportunity to recognize decades of planning, collaboration, partnerships, engagement and construction progress we’ve made along the SR 520 corridor.Construction activities will ramp up starting this fall. Increasing Safety and Connectivity: Bingen Point and SR 14 – Port of Klickitat Access Improvements wsdot 2024-08-15 | WSDOT is committed to safety and constantly exploring ways to improve our existing roads and highways. This project will improve the connection between the City of Bingen, the Port of Klickitat, and SR 14, making it safer and more efficient for everyone. Currently, when a train passes through the area, all travelers, including emergency responders, must wait to cross the railroad tracks, causing delays, congestion, and backups along SR 14. In partnership with BNSF, the City of Bingen, the Port of Klickitat, Klickitat County, and the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission, WSDOT has designed an access improvement project that includes a new roundabout on SR 14 that connects to Marina Way via a new grade separated railroad crossing. When trains move through the area, emergency responders will have direct access to port area directly while keeping traffic flowing smoothly along SR 14 through Bingen. US 101 Paving Pre-design Study wsdot 2024-07-16 | The Washington State Department of Transportation is repaving two sections of US 101. One section is near Port Angeles between East Kolonels Way and Shore Road. The other section is near Sequim from Kitchen-Dick Road to Simdars Road.WSDOT undertook a Complete Streets review. We then shared these findings with our local government partners and took their input. WSDOT is proposing safety improvements such as roundabouts, crosswalks, and improved shoulders along US 101. This is in addition to the paving work.

Winona Railroad Trestle Emergency Replacement Project wsdot 2024-07-11 | It spelled disaster for eastern Washington farmers when a wildfire destroyed a critical wooden railroad trestle, at the peak of harvest season, on a state-owned short-line railroad that ships agriculture products to international markets. SR 520 Montlake Project – Removing the last of the SR 520 ramps through the Arboretum wsdot 2024-06-20 | In spring 2024, contractor crews removed the last of the SR 520 ramps that once cut through Seattle’s Washington Park Arboretum. The removal also included the only portion of the planned R.H. Thomson Expressway that was ever built. One piece of the expressway, known to WSDOT as bent #2, was preserved and will serve as an historical marker to commemorate the community effort to stop the R.H. Thomson Expressway project.

Lives on the line: WSDOT striper crew recounts intense work zone collision wsdot 2024-04-25 | On September 12, 2022, our striping crew was painting fresh lines on US 2 between Wilbur and Davenport when they were involved in a work zone collision. The striper truck was badly damaged and ended up needing repairs that took more than a year to complete. But lives can’t be replaced. Thankfully, the entire crew was able to walk away from the collision, but a matter of inches made the difference between them walking away and possibly being severely injured or killed. Please slow down and move over in work zones.
SR 104 at Shine Road/Paradise Bay Road and SR 19 - Intersection Safety Improvement Project wsdot 2024-04-10 | The intersection of State Route 104 and Shine Road/Paradise Bay in Jefferson County near the Hood Canal Bridge has a history of serious-injury collisions. In early 2019, we conducted a formal analysis called an Intersection Control Evaluation which considered safety needs, operational efficiencies and area traffic volumes with the goal of identifying improvements for the traveling public. The study recommendation was to build a single-lane, metered roundabout at the intersection to reduce the probability of collisions and improve traffic flow. This project will build roundabouts on SR 104 at both Shine Road/Paradise Bay Road and at SR 19/Beaver Valley Road. Both projects are anticipated to begin construction in 2024. Ferries Employee Profile – Machinist Chris Draper wsdot 2024-04-08 | When a ferry engine needs fixed, Chris Draper is one of the first calls made. Chris is a Machinist at Eagle Harbor Maintenance Facility. He rebuilds Detroit Series-60 engines and operates the equipment that repairs parts (or makes new ones) on ferries. Chris also runs the fixed-cab boom crane at Eagle Harbor and at ferry terminals.
I-405 Lind Avenue SW Bridge Deck Concrete Pour wsdot 2024-03-20 | The I-405 Lind Avenue overpass project took a big step forward when crews poured the bridge deck this month. They spent most of this winter setting new girders, building supports and framing with rebar. I-405 - Lind Avenue Overpass Demolition wsdot 2023-11-07 | Contractor crews worked overnight from Friday, Nov. 3, 2023, until Saturday, Nov. 4 to bring down the damaged portion of the Lind Avenue bridge in Renton over southbound I-405. In 2022, the bridge was struck by a backhoe being towed on a trailer. Crews will now focus on rebuilding the bridge. Travelers should prepare for nightly closures on southbound I-405 starting Monday, Nov. 27 as they bring in replacement girders to rebuild the span. Ramp meters turning on I-5 Mobility Improvements project wsdot 2023-11-02 | The I-5 NB Seneca to SR 520 Mobility Improvements project moves into its next phase on Nov. 14, 2023, when ramp meters turn on to manage the flow of traffic merging from I-90 to northbound I-5. Ramp meters help reduce the number of collisions, creating a safer driving environment for everyone on the roadway. The ramp meters are just one part of this mobility project that also includes a third through lane and additional electronic signs designed to improve traffic through downtown Seattle. Salmon Near Colman Dock in Seattle wsdot 2023-10-26 | Salmon were recently spotted swimming at the new Habitat Beach just south of our Colman Dock. SR 9 SR 204 Intersection Improvements Project Construction Completion Celebration wsdot 2023-10-26 | We recently wrapped up nearly seven years of major construction on our SR 9/SR 204 Intersection Improvements project in the City of Lake Stevens. The main goal throughout has been to improve safety, traffic flow and trip reliability for all modes of transportation while increasing access to local businesses and freight movement within the growing Lake Stevens community. To commemorate the accomplishment, Washington State Secretary of State Steve Hobbs, WSDOT Deputy Secretary of Transportation Amy Scarton, WSDOT Northwest Regional Administrator Brian Nielsen, Lake Stevens Mayor Brett Gailey and WSDOT project engineer Amelia Scharrer spoke before a collection of state, county and city officials and others who played a role in this important project. I-5/Steilacoom-DuPont Road interchange improvements on the way wsdot 2023-09-07 | To relieve chronic traffic congestion and improve mobility along I-5 near Joint Base Lewis-McChord, we will rebuild the Steilacoom-DuPont Road interchange (Exit 119) and extend HOV lanes on I-5.
