Delalande: Simphonies pour les Soupers du Roy | Grande Pièce en G ré sol | Academy of Ancient Music

The Sun King, Louis XIV of France, often dined on his own, but this didn’t mean that mealtimes were low-key affairs. The Duchess of Orléans recalled that the King often started with four different plates of soup before moving onto to a whole pheasant, a partridge, some salad, ham and lamb, pastries and fruit, the whole thing rounded off with some boiled eggs, every dish carefully tested to make sure that it was poison- free by the King’s dedicated team of tasters. It was an honour to be invited to watch the King at his mastications, and keeping a careful eye on the meal was an officier de bouche whose job it was to spot every time the King took a drink, and to command everyone present to follow suit with the words: ‘À boire pour le Roi!’

Since the King had no conversation to keep him entertained during this ritual, music played an important role. And in charge of this aspect of proceedings was the composer, organist and maître de musique de la chambre Michel-Richard Delalande. Two decades after Delalande’s death in 1726 a sumptuous collection appeared of music that he had composed for the King’s table, though it would be more accurate to say that the music was compiled from other Delalande works taken from various divertissements and ballets. The title of this collection makes clear
that these simphonies were performed only once a fortnight, rarely enough that they might be regarded as something of a special occasion rather than day-to-day background music. And of all the simphonies, we’re told that this second Fantasie in G minor was one that the king often asked to hear. Its mix of sombre chaconne-style variations, expansive lyrical melody and fleet-footed fast music would have struck a chord with an arts-loving king who was as tuned in to fine music as he was to his beloved dancing.

The Academy of Ancient Music performs the Passacaille from Georg Frideric Handel's Sonata in G Major Op.5 No.4, directed by Laurence Cummings. Excerpted from Suonare è danzare, the opening concert of AAM Live 2021, the performance was broadcast in HD from West Road Concert Hall in Cambridge.

Handel was a consummate musical recycler, and so it comes as no surprise that the central Passacaille of his Sonata Op.5 No.4 is adapted from the ballet in his opera Radamisto of 1720. Eighteenth century music survived only when performed or (less frequently) printed. An oratorio or opera might never be revived but its melodies didn’t have to die with it. Incorporated into playable, affordable domestic music, they lost none of their magnetism.

Introducing Laurence Cummings | AAM announces new Music Director

Academy of Ancient Music 2020-11-18 | The Academy of Ancient Music is delighted to announce the appointment of Laurence Cummings as Music Director from the 2021-22 season. One of Britain's most exciting and versatile exponents of historical performance both as a conductor and a harpsichord player, Cummings is a noted authority on Handel, The Guardian lauding him as “one of the composer’s best advocates in the world".

AAM Chief Executive John McMunn comments: “Laurence Cummings is acclaimed for his virtuosity at the keyboard, the energy and verve he brings to the concert platform as a director, and for his staunch advocacy for the historical-performance of baroque and classical music. I can think of no better musician to take the baton from Richard Egarr as AAM approaches its 50th anniversary in 2023.”

Laurence Cummings comments: “I’m delighted to join with the Academy of Ancient Music to develop what the orchestra already has, to explore this wonderful repertoire that we all love with such a passion, and hopefully to reveal something new and fresh to the modern ear.”

The Academy of Ancient Music joins forces with Cambridge Handel Opera Company and Cambridge Early Music for a production of John Eccles' opera 'Semele' [c.1707]. A powerful setting of text by William Congreve, Eccles' masterwork fell neglected beneath the shadow of Handel's secular oratorio of the same name, premiering in 1744. The Academy of Ancient Music, CHOC and CEM are pioneering a major recording project of Eccles' 'Semele', endeavouring to elevate this under-appreciated work with a deluxe album release in early 2021.

Academy of Ancient Music 2020-03-08 | The Academy of Ancient Music perform the Overture to 'Fleur d'épine' ("May-Flower") [1776] by Marie-Emmanuelle Bayon Louis (1745 – 1825). AAM are led by Bojan Cicic and directed by Christopher Bucknall at the harpsichord.

A French composer, pianist, and salonnière, Bayon Louis' surviving works comprise a collection of six keyboard sonatas, three of them with violin accompaniment, opus 1 [1769], and the two-act opéra-comique, Fleur d’épine ("May-Flower") [1776]. This recording features as part of AAM's From Her Pen project, exploring and revealing the works of female composers from the Baroque and Classical eras. Soprano Mary Bevan sings Piacere's aria 'Lascia la spina, cogli la rosa' ('Leave the Thorn, Take the Rose') from Handel's oratorio 'Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno' HWV46a [1707]. Mary is joined by the Academy of Ancient Music, directed by Christopher Bucknall at the harpsichord.

With elements first used in the 1705 opera Almira, this frequently-reworked melody was a favourite of Handel's; he adapted it again in 1711 for his London opera Rinaldo as 'Lascia ch'io pianga' ('Let me weep'), and the opera's success led to the latter version being the one most commonly performed today.

Translation:

Countertenor John Holiday stars in the aria 'Ah, ch'infelice!' from Antonio Vivaldi's cantata 'Cessate, omai cessate', RV684 [c.1720-1724], performed with the Academy of Ancient Music.

John has quickly established himself as a fast-rising singer to watch and “one of the finest countertenors of his generation” (Los Angeles Times). His voice has been praised as “a thing of astonishing beauty” (New Yorker), “arrestingly powerful, secure and dramatically high” (Wall Street Journal), “exceptional [and] strong...even in its highest range” (The New York Times) and “timeless”(Washington Post). Here he sings one of Vivaldi's most magnificent yet under-appreciated arias, depicting a shepherd weeping over his lost love, the pizzicato strings suggesting tears landing on the strings of his lyre.
