This old porch, or lanai as they call it in Hawaii, used to be fully carpeted and the walls were a not-so-beautiful shade of hospital-like mint green, but NOW, it’s been transformed into a lush, plant-filled oasis for our lounging and outdoor dining needs. Plants were a huge part of this design, as well as some found driftwood and some logs from a dead tree on our property. I think we used around 30 air plants in this reveal LOL! The dining table is perfectly placed next to the pass-through window into the kitchen and the lower club-chairs are great for lounging with a morning coffee. The blue Moroccan rug underfoot will be kept safe from rain because of our large eves that overhand the house and deflect the water and I love having the super soft wool and bright color under foot. We are so happy with how this cozy transformation totally made this once small living room in our island home feel big, open and full of budget-friendly and beautiful design. All the items used to get this final look are listed below! The biggest change we did to the room was adding the faux beams we made to look like driftwood - they really make the ceiling look so much taller! Then we also added a window along the back wall to look out on the beautiful lush backyard beyond. Storage and function were key design elements for this room because with a small child, things can get messy. This makeover has been months in the making and we are finally sharing the full kitchen transformation with you. Yes, we still need a permanent, flip up window but I’m so happy with how everything turned out, what do you think? It was a process of ripping out everything from the old kitchen, which was also a too-tight floorplan for any kind of kitchen and cooking enjoyment. Opening up the whole space by making it an L shape and adding a center island with waterfall top, really changed the entire feel of the space. The counters are a mix of marble and granite with a floating shelf along the back splash. The appliances from Café Appliances are gorgeous and really pull together this mix of new and vintage. Our enamel cast iron sink we found at a salvage yard and refinished it, and I’m so happy we did because it looks so pretty with our gold and unlaquered brass faucets from Etsy. A quick visit to the thrift store really helped us pull together this space with a neutral color palette complimented by dark reds, maroons, greens and orange. The ceramic items we found at a garage sale! DIY artwork is a mix of charcoal sketches of a butterfly and some hand painted items including one using a new medium I’d never worked with that has pumice stone mixed in for a perfect beachy texture! Limewash is such a gorgeous technique for walls to give warmth and design interest but it’s labor intensive and not renter friendly so I decided we needed to test out our new Peel and Stick Limewash Wallpaper in the Potter’s Clay Peach color (link), which is very similar to Pantone’s color of the year 2024 Peach Fuzz but of course we had to do it all over the walls and ceiling! The whole floorplan and layout needed to be re-thought so it could be more functional for this family of three. The design style needed to be a compromise of what the husband (Kyle) likes, Wabi Sabi and wood slat walls and the wife (Cina) loves which is TikTok trendy curves in a post modern style with creamy white tone on tone and pastel cutesy accents! These walls are double the size of normal walls so we did 10+ DIYs to implement design and function.
