You've probably heard the term "functional training" before, but what does it mean? And how do you apply it? In a nutshell, functional exercise means to exercise in ways that will directly apply to improving the movement in your daily life. The best way to train functionally is to design a program specifically around your job and various habitual movements for your day-to-day life, but since I'm making videos and not training you individually, I can't do that. So, what's the next best thing? To show you how to make your calisthenics more functional in general. So, in this video I'm elaborating on 3 recommendations I have to make calisthenics routines more functional: using all 3 planes of movement, using gymnastics rings and "playing" (yes, literally having fun with your fitness and getting creative). I hope you enjoy the video! And if you don't mind, please leave a comment letting me know what you want to see more of on the channel. Thanks!

Hey everyone! Been a while since I put together an exercise montage, so here's a list of exercises I put together with only a pull-up bar and dip handles. Just two pieces of equipment - or one, if you have a tower like BULLBAR 2.0 - and you have yourself a whole lifetime of fitness at your fingertips, for real! I hope this video illustrates that. Like I mentioned near the end of the video, I could have easily taken it to 40 exercises or beyond, but truth is... I got pretty tired after 33 sets! 🤣 Hope you enjoy!

He was a fitness guru from the 20th century who did a lot more than just promote gyms. He was a master of calisthenics. An absolute BEAST. And more importantly, he influenced millions of people to exercise in their homes and eat a healthier diet. In this video, I cover everything from Jack LaLanne's approach to working out to his diet, his amazing feats of strength, his power juicer, and more. He was a huge inspiration for me, so I made this video for 2 reasons: (1) to carry on his legacy for anyone who didn't know about him, and (2) to show you guys where a lot of my inspiration comes from for MTG. I hope you guys enjoy this different type of video!

The warm-up video, if you need it: BEST Calisthenics Warm Up Routine For Your Workout youtu.be/esN8GW8bzms
Hey guys! This is a beginner calisthenics routine for building strength that requires no equipment whatsoever; just your body, the floor, gravity and possibly a wall. I wanted to put this together for my first video of 2024 so anyone getting started can use it. No pull up bar or dip bars required. Keep in mind this routine is meant to be a sort of "primer" to get you started. Eventually you'd want to advance to harder variations and probably invest in some sort of pull up bar to start working on pulling exercises (rows and pull ups). But for those getting started with nothing, this routine will do the trick. Enjoy!
Workout format: Warm up (if necessary) For each of these exercises, perform 3 sets to failure, 2 min rest between: 1. Straight Bridge 2. Push Ups 3. Bodyweight Squats 4. Lying Leg Raises Cool down: just walk around until heart rate comes down Perform this workout 2x per week minimally or 3x per week max Try to increase reps/hold time from workout to workout Keep active on the off days! Do cardio and stretch. You can also perform this workout as circuits instead of straight sets if you are tight on time. Strength won't be optimized for each set, but you'll challenge your cardio more with the circuits and complete the workout faster.

By now, you probably all know that I geek out on fitness equipment. When Jason from BaseBlocks reached out this past summer and told me about the Nordic Plus, I knew I just HAD to check it out and make a review. Why? Well, because I've honestly found the nordic curl to be one of the hardest exercises in calisthenics. I've seen people train them in a doorway with a DIY setup, but it just doesn't seem safe to me. So when BaseBlocks made specialized equipment for training nordic curls, I figured it was time for me to seriously pursue this exercise and share my honest thoughts on this equipment. I hope this review helps! Also, make sure you subscribe and stay tuned to see my progress as I train the nordics!

Hey everybody! Been a while since I published a video. I figured I'd start things off answering a question I've had many times for the years, "what calisthenics exercise is a substitute for deadlifts?" Well, my answer isn't so straight forward. I don't believe there's a true 1:1 substitution for deadlifts in the world of calisthenics, but there are a couple bodyweight exercises I share in this video that are good alternatives. If you do these calisthenics exercises regularly, you'll strengthen the same muscle groups as deadlift: hamstrings, glutes, lower back, upper trapezius, forearms and your entire core in general. I hope you enjoy the video!

A groin stretch, some neck stretches (SCM and levator scapulae), and upper traps come to mind. But overall, the 4 stretches in this video will help *anyone* who sits for long hours at their job. If you make this mistake with your calisthenics training, your progress will stop dead in its tracks. And I know that sounds overdramatic, and some people might disagree with me, but just hear me out in this video. I've been training calisthenics for years now and I can say without a doubt that every time I tried "bulking" in the bodybuilding sense of the word - eating in a caloric surplus consistently for an extended period of time - it only KILLED my progress. And why? Well, that's what I explain in this video. Just keep in mind that anyone who tells you that bulking *helped* them with calisthenics is probably an ectomorph and were under-eating all along, so raising their calories helped them recover better and make gains. That doesn't mean they're "bulking" and eating in a caloric surplus all the time. Rather, they were underestimating their energy output and finally started eating more around maintenance calories (satiety). The truth is that our bodies produce hormones like leptin and grhelin for a reason. We aren't supposed to track our calories and aim for certain macro targets. If we just eat whole food until we feel satisfied, not too much more (or less), then we will recover and make steady gains.

While I'll never deny the benefits of working one-on-one with a physical therapist or personal trainer to address the specifics and fix your posture (forward head, rounded shoulders, hunchback, tilted pelvis, etc.), it can be quite tedious to have a program of half a dozen or more postural exercises to run through on a daily basis, plus some people just don't have the time or money to work with a professional. So, what if there was a simpler solution that, although not as specific as a custom program, could address MOST of the postural deviations we face today? And what if that solution was to use positions (or "postures") that we humans used to get into frequently but rarely do anymore? That's what this video is all about. In my experience, I have found the 3 positions I share in this video - specifically hanging, inversion and back extension - can fix posture for A LOT of individuals with the most common postural deviations of our modern technological world. And keep in mind, I'm a certified Functional Training Specialist, so I do know a thing or two about posture. Yet I have found these 3 positions to be HUGELY beneficial for nearly every single person who uses them and I'm confident enough to recommend them to all in this video. Are they the end all be all? No, unfortunately, I don't think such a thing exists for posture correction. But I do believe nearly everyone watching this video can at least improve their posture to a degree by using these positions. So, try 'em out!

Thanks for watching!Calisthenics Drop Sets | 3 Methods For More Gains!Minus The Gym2022-11-29 | Have you ever used drop sets with your calisthenics? A lot of people don't, but when you're trying to pack in the training volume and get bigger and more "swole," not much compares to the power of calisthenics drop sets. These are essentially consecutive sets done with little or no rest between, and you decrease the resistance slightly on each subsequent set. It's a great way to really pack in more sets and fully exhaust your muscles. Although I'm not currently using drop sets in my workouts, I figured I'd make this video in response to a recent comment I received. I hope the 3 methods help you out!
Now and then I love to train calisthenics every day for a stretch, so I started doing that back in September. And honestly? I've been absolutely LOVING it. I feel great! Don't see myself going back to a traditional routine any time soon. Returning to the "7-days a week" approach made me reminisce a bit about my 100 pushups & 100 pullups a day challenge, and so I decided to make this video and emphasize an important point everyone should know when they train daily calisthenics: undulating periodization. You gotta listen to your body. I hope the video helps!

There are many training variables we have to consider when we train calisthenics or weights. First, there’s volume: how many exercises, how many sets per exercise, and how many reps per set? Then there’s intensity: should I only use bodyweight? Should I rep until failure? Should I add weight? Should I max out? Then ROM, form and rep tempo. The list goes on. But in this video, I’m sharing what I believe is the most underrated training variable. We rarely talk about it. It’s invisible. No one can see it. And only YOU can feel it. Do you know what it is? It's the mind-muscle connection! And I even share an important tip to improve your mind-muscle connection and get more out of your workouts.

Hey guys! Here's another one for #shorts that shows the 3 main form cues to focus on to hold a handstand. If you're struggling to hold yourself upside down, these will help! I usually sum these up as "push, tilt & point," because you need to (1) push from the serratus to elevate the scapula, (2) tilt your pelvis by contracting abs and glutes, and (3) tense your thighs and calves while pointing your toes and trying to touch the sky. If you practice these enough while you're inverted, you'll get the hang of it. Keep it up!!!

This one is another quick tip that's ideal for #shorts. I decided to follow up the "bad pushups" short with a fan request for the same thing but for pull ups. These are the top 3 mistakes I think we all make with pull ups at some point in our journey. The last one about going into a dead hang is bound to draw up some controversy, so let me explain: when you go into a dead hang at the bottom of every rep, although it FEELS like you should do that because it's completely full ROM, you're actually disengaging the muscle tension in dead hang which isn't really ideal, especially if you have strength or hypertrophy as a goal. So my recommendation is to go down into an active hang at the bottom on each rep and try to keep moving the entire time. Pause as little as possible at the bottom. I hope this helps!

This video will answer it for you. I share 3 methods that I've used over the years. All three of them work but can lend different results in terms of developing skills, strength and muscle mass, so I explain the differences between all three too. Some of you might wonder why I chose not to include unilateral variations, such as one-arm push ups. It's because I personally view those as simply an exercise variation, not a form of progressive overload. Although a unilateral exercise does apply more resistance than the bilateral version, the unilateral method can only be used once, then you have to apply one of the 3 methods in this video to the unilateral exercise in order to be progressive with the resistance. I hope that makes sense. And I hope the video helps. But, most importantly... have fun training!

Just a quick #shorts video to show you the best method I've found to increase hang time on the bar. This is actually the same method I've used to increase reps on push ups, pull ups and other exercises too. It's all about frequent submaximal sets. Treat your fitness like a PRACTICE. It's seriously the best way to build strength. Pavel calls it "greasing the groove," but whatever you choose to call it, high-frequency submaximal training works wonders. You can do this in addition to 1x or 2x per week pull workouts too.
I hope you're all having a great summer! I've been enjoying some time off with my family, hence just a couple shorts this past month. I'll be back to making regular content very soon!

It's probably the most overused excuse I've heard to not exercise. But did you know you don't need to find a single dedicated timeframe to get in your workout? You can use a form of "micro workouts" by splitting your routine into chunks and doing it throughout the day. In this #shorts clip I share how a simple full body routine of push ups, pull ups and squats can be split up amongst a busy day while I'm working in the yard. Hopefully this advice is applicable to you too. Remember to stay tuned for more and keep training hard!
Hey everybody! One of my videos from last year about parallel bar exercises has climbed in views and I've been receiving a lot of comments asking for exercises on parallel bars for beginners. So here you go! I absolutely love my parallel bars (the B-Bars from BaseBlocks), they're my 2nd favorite equipment just under my gymnastics rings, so I hope this video helps you understand how to progress from complete beginner to the four movements I show in the video: dips, L-sit, tucked front lever and L-sit chin up. Soon you'll love your parallel bars as much as I do! Also, if you're in the market for a good set of bars, don't forget to check out the B-Bars and my discount code up above!

Hey everyone! A common question I’ve been receiving on my older BaseBlocks videos is what’s the difference between the BaseBar Pro and the original BaseBar? Well, I honestly had no idea, so I recently got a BaseBar Pro and assembled and used it right next to my original BaseBar. In this video I cover all the things that are the same and different between the two so hopefully you can make an informed decision on which (if either) are best for your purposes and budget. I hope the video helps!
Are you thinking about transitioning to plant based eating but not sure where to start? In this video, I discuss the 3 methods I recommend using. None of them are right or wrong. It really just depends on the individual, where they're at in life and what type of change they're ready for in life. To give you a high-level idea of what I explain in the video, there are basically 2 main methods: diving in and the tip toe method You use diving in if you're looking for a radical change and want the plant based lifestyle to really "shock" you and convince you of its merits. But if you're not looking for a drastic change, then the tip toe method is ideal for those who want to gently ease into this way of eating one meal at a time. And then there's a 3rd method I share, juice fasting, which is the most extreme of all, but is also the most beneficial for anyone who tries it because it literally cleanses and heals your colon better than anything else you could possibly do.
My apologies for those who clicked on this video looking for a step-by-step video with a grocery haul, recipes, etc. That's not at all what I wanted to do here. This is only a discussion. I'm simply introducing you to the 3 high-level methods to transition to a plant based lifestyle. It's up to you to decide which one is most appropriate for you and do the planning yourself. No one can make a healthy lifestyle choice for you. You have to take onus and put in the work yourself. I hope that makes sense. Let this video be your guide on how to approach your whole food plant based dietary changes, but take your time planning, finding recipes and experimenting along the way. And don't forget to have fun too! :)

▶ Music by Taheda FewDoors artlist.ioI Swing The Rope Instead Of Jump ItMinus The Gym2022-04-29 | Ever heard of functional training with a rope? Rope flow? Roping? Rolling? Any of these terms? Neither had I! Until a friend of mine, Michelle, showed me some rope tricks she was working on and said, "Ya know, I should put you in touch with Tim Shieff." I exchanged a few emails with Tim, bought myself a rope and the rest is history. Now I find myself making a video to share the fun with you, and it pretty much turned into a beginner rope training tutorial.
Now, I do still use a jump rope now and then - I haven't completely abandoned the jumping part - but 95% of the time I'm swinging the rope instead now. It's incredibly functional. It's a full body workout, but it's gentle, fluid and amazing for mobility, coordination and overall function. It teaches your body to work as one unit again, but in complex ways that we aren't used to doing. And although rolling is quite humbling, it's simultaneously very rewarding and enjoyable. So all in all? A win-win. I hope you enjoy it if you give it a shot! And don't forget to sub and stay tuned if you want to learn more ;)

Hey gang! If you're not sure how to eat enough protein on a plant based diet, this video will help you out. I show three meals I ate across a day that totaled to 132 g of protein. At my weight of 185 lbs (84 kg), if you follow the standard recommendations from sports science to eat 1.6 g protein per kg of bodyweight, then I almost exactly hit that recommendation with ease! So high protein plant based meals are no big deal. You eat whole foods, eat enough calories, maybe use a scoop of protein pwoder (if you want), and you're good! A lot of you recently asked for "what I eat in a day" style videos, so here you go. This video is literally me just documenting everything I ate this past Sunday. Have you ever tried using gymnastics rings in a doorway? I know I have. And although it worked, it was pretty scary knowing that if the pull up bar gave out, the whole setup would come tumbling down on me as I landed flat on the floor. That's where the Duonamic Eleviia Rings come into play. See, I've always struggled with hanging gymnastics rings because I don't have many good places around the house. Best place is the i-beam in my garage, but that's a pain in the winter when the garage is freezing cold. So when Duonamic announced their rings attachment for the Eleviia, I was beyond excited. When I heard about Scott Murray passing away at only 27 years old due to heart failure, I decided to change up my scheduled content and make this video. Learning of his death and seeing just how many bodybuilders and fitness influencers have died in the last few years alone has been a stark reminder of why I started Minus The Gym in the first place. I could have been Scott Murray. As I explain in this video, my health was headed in the wrong direction when I was 25 years old, and it was due to a childhood of obesity and the fitness lifestyle that's being taught in the mainstream: eat in a caloric surplus, lots of animal protein, lift weights and do your cardio. Trust me, it doesn't work. It doesn't make you healthy. It destroys your arteries. It's only a matter of time. Will it take 10 years like it did for me? 20 years? 30? And steroids only exacerbate the issue. I wasn't taking steroids, and yet the modern fitness lifestyle was killing me quite fast. I hope this video resonates with you and helps you realize that society as a whole needs to change its perspective on fitness altogether. It's not about building yourself up and being "big." It should be about the other facets of fitness: strength, leanness, flexibility, mobility, speed, power, agility, etc. If you're with me on this message, don't forget to subscribe and follow. My mission with this channel is to help people be fit and TRULY HEALTHY - not fit on the outside by dying on the inside.
Lots of spinal rotation exercises are done as mobility work, but there’s also a need to practice spinal ration under load in your working sets. This is because it's a part of daily life to twist and turn while you're holding things or moving in awkward positions. Think of getting out of your car, putting your child in their high chair, or simply looking behind you. All of these rotations are common movements, yet that’s exactly where calisthenics tends to fall short: the vast majority of calisthenics exercises are in the sagittal plane, involving little to no rotation of the spine. That’s why I made this video. I wanted to show you all some ideas I’ve used to occasionally add spinal rotation to the basic calisthenics. If you include these in your workouts, along with some light mobility work on the spine, you'll notice a huge functional benefit to all the twisting and turning in your daily life. I hope you enjoy the video!
Hey gang! I started doing cold showers, or at least my version of them, last summer in 2021 and wanted to make a quick video about the cold exposure benefits I've noticed. I could have easily made this video 20 minutes long because I have that much to say, but I kept it to just 3 benefits of cold showers and my experience with this fad. The gist of it is that this is one of those extreme health fads that actually makes sense. I can see why people do it. Is cold stress necessary to be healthy and fit? No, definitely not. But can it help boost your health and fitness? Absolutely! I hope the video sheds some light on this for those of you who aren't familiar with the topic. Some evidence also suggested that cold exposure can boost your immune system, but I didn't include that because my immune system has been GREAT since I switched to a plant based diet 🌱💪. So I honestly can't say I've noticed any immune benefits from cold showers.
Btw, I referred to myself as a "pansy" when it comes to cold showers and I meant that as I'm a bit of a coward with them (I hate the cold!). It didn't dawn on me until after shooting this video that the term pansy might have an offensive connotation to it, so I just want to mention I did NOT mean it offensively in any way - just in the sense of "cowardly." My apologies for that! 🙏
Thanks for watching!

Hey everybody! I wanted to share with you my latest investment in my home gym. Now, before I go any further, let me mention that I'm still Minus The Gym - meaning, I still fully believe you don't need fancy equipment to get in shape and be healthy. But I've without a gym for quite some time now, and the winters ALWAYS are a challenge for me to keep up on my cardio. So in late 2021 I took my time and did some shopping online for a good gamified exercise bike. I had a feeling that gamified cardio was the answer to my lack of aerobic exercise in the cold and snowy winter, so I took the plunge. I originally had my sights set on a Peloton, but MAN are those expensive. Then I found some other options that were about half the price of a Peloton bike and the Freebeat xbike ultimately won. So consider this my official review of the Freebeat xbike and also my thoughts on gamified cardio as a means of making aerobic exercise more interesting and exciting.
Again - I'm still MTG. I promise. I just needed to treat myself to a new toy this past Christmas :)
Thanks for watching and I hope enjoy the video!

Hey gang! In this video I share 1 tip that I recommend trying for fast core strength and stability. This tip can be summed up basically in two words: quadrupedal movement. The act of getting on all fours, crawling around your living room or wherever you are, and experimenting with this movement daily can create HUGE benefits for your core. This isn't about getting a ripped six pack. That's for a different video. This is about having a truly strong and functional core. Keyword: functional. A core that allows you to go about your day to day life with ease and without injury. Having a strong core is essential and, unfortunately, our modern lifestyle has us constantly doing things that WEAKEN our core, such as sitting, slouching and other things. So make sure you give this shot if you haven't already. The beauty of quadrupedal movement is that you can do it literally anywhere, so there's no excuse. This video outlines how to get started, but make sure you check out my other video (above) for more details and how to progress further. See you in the next video!
▶ Music by FewDoors artlist.ioBreathe Like THIS During Your WorkoutMinus The Gym2022-03-04 | Hey gang! I often get asked how to breathe properly during a workout. It's a pretty simple answer, so I figured it would be a great topic for #shorts on my channel. In this video I sum up the basic concepts behind proper breathing for isotonic (dynamic) and isometric (static) exercises. The gist of it is you want to exhale, preferably through the mouth, on the exertion or "concentric" phase of the movement. Then on the negative or "eccentric" phase you want to inhale through the nostrils. It's not to say it's the ONLY way to breathe, just the most effective. Then on isometrics you simply keep breathing - don't hold your breath. Now, there's also another concept called power breathing that can allow you to get even more power into your concentrics, but that's a topic for a full-length video :) I hope this helps!

How's it goin' everyone? In this video I decided to just hang out with you guys while I show you my current workout routine. For the last month or so I’ve been doing high-volume basics in this 300-rep workout designed to boost your metabolism and encourage fat burn. It’s essentially 10 rounds of: 5 pull ups, 10 push ups & 15 squats. This totals to 300 reps - a decent amount of volume! - while really getting your heart rate up and engaging that "afterburn effect" to boost your metabolism and burn more calories at rest. To prove this fat loss workout actually works, I also used my trusty new Lumen to prove that my body is in a fat burning state. The Lumen is amazing! It measures the CO2 in your breath to determine if you’re in a fat burning state or burning carbs. So I demonstrate that a couple times too and show you that my body is busy torching fat thanks to this workout and my current fat loss diet. I hope you enjoyed the video and learned a thing or two about metabolic flexibility. And if you want to learn more about Lumen, check out the link at the top of the description box. Stay tuned for more routine videos, exercise tips and nutritional goodness!
In this video, I take a close look at squat form and the #1 way to hurt your back doing squats. The answer lies in one simple form cue that allows you to make sure you're not putting your back at risk. It all comes down to your tibia and back angle in your squat. I also include a stretch and strengthening exercise you can use to help correct the issue if you find yourself breaking form when trying to adhere to this significant form cue. And lastly, I explain why so many people make such a big deal out of squat form, when in reality, it shouldn't be! I hope the video helps!
