It is bound on two sides by streets with snow storage easements and was bisected by the City of Aspen’s main water line which required relocation and over a year of public debate.In addition, it is located in a historic district and survived lengthy zoning and historic approvals. The resulting solution is a stone ‘wedge’ which hints to the owners’ art collection housed primarily within its double-height space. This vaulted space not only houses art, but is central to the plan and is the public loci of the house.The interplay of natural light within the twenty foot volume changes personality as the day unfolds. The site is adjacent to the Aspen Institute originally designed by Herbert Bayer and this house respects Aspen’s ‘modernist’ history. The 3200 square feet is divided between an upper private level, public main floor and lower guest level with the windows and doors carefully placed to insure privacy, capture views and avoid direct sun because of the art.The exterior cladding is composed entirely of a light-weight limestone panel system with custom aluminum windows and doors. Conceived as a frame for viewing the landscape, Arch11 meticulously modeled the residence within the site to insure that planes of glass capture ridge-top views while respecting the city’s height restrictions.Built with innovative renewable energy systems and materials crafted to last centuries, the house is a model of cutting-edge sustainable design and attains a LEED gold certification.Roof gardens allow the land to literally envelope the house, and expansive, retracting glass walls provide full views of the Flatirons to the west while connecting interiors with outdoor rooms.Executed with uncompromising detail, surfaces meet with quiet precision creating a serene background for the landscape and mountains beyond.The Syncline House by Arch11:“Site ConditionsA Pre-Paleozoic fold creates a distinction between the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountain Foothills. Geologically referred to as a syncline, a crease caused by uplift of an ancient sea bed, the fold distinguishes the inhabited plains from mountain park space. The upward plane of the fold presents a landscape described and observed moving sectionally through the house.The wedge shaped site was bound by numerous restrictive land use limitations: a wetland buffer, height restrictions, a solar access restriction, and multiple setback and easement boundary requirements. A three-dimensional computer model was developed describing the limits of the buildable envelope.Design StrategyThe project was conceived as a threshold between the city and the mountain park. The client, an entrepreneurial and professional rock climbing couple, requested the house to be “a place where town life can be left behind.” The house is a threshold between both the cultural and geologic creases: one between the domestic and the feral, the other between horizontal and vertical. Through a domestic grove of flowering trees, a solid wood wall, broken only by a perpendicular stone wall, opens to the house interior. Once inside, the stone wall becomes a thickened poche of mechanical and service elements leading through to the west wall of the house, a glazed wall framing the mountain parks.The western wall phenomenally erodes, revealing the landscape with varying degrees of openness. At the entry, framed apertures provide controlled vignettes of the landscape from foreground meadow to high ground cliffs. As the entry opens to the living spaces the apertures transform in scale to reveal the expansive landscape in its entirety. At the southwest corner thirty feet of glass retracts into the walls, dissolving the boundary between the domestic and the wild; the living spaces are then bounded only by the uplifted cliffs beyond. Reciprocally, the native meadow to the west folds onto the garage roof providing easy outdoor access for visiting guests in the house’s guest suite.A simple stair cantilevers from the stone wall. Climbing the stairs, the foreground, mid range, and ridge views are sequentially revealed. Experientially scissoring into the landscape and back into the house the stairs connect the mountain park with the house. The west wall of glazing extends the western room boundaries to the wall of rock and meadows beyond. The east wall remains closed, allowing only privileged, controlled views and light from the clerestory above.Photos by: Raul J. Urban Townhouse by GLUCK+ Home Interior Plus 2016-08-23 | Subscribe : youtube.com/c/homeinteriorplus?sub_confirmation=1G+ : plus.google.com/u/0/b/103693127292160829002/+homeinteriorplusFB : facebook.com/Home-Interior-Plus-376519235812640======================================================This townhouse is located on East 51st Street in New York City, a pleasant street with three- and four-story historical buildings, steps from the towers of Midtown.The 2009 renovation project (1,322 sq ft) was designed by the NYC architectural firm GLUCK+.Here is a perfect example of an inventive architecture that doesn’t leave any passer-by indifferent: you love it or you hate it!“This five-floor residence is constructed within the fixed footprint of an existing three-story townhouse on a typically narrow infill Manhattan plot, sharing party walls with the adjacent houses. The clients asked for loft-like spaces, open and filled with light but also private – exactly the opposite of a standard NYC row house, with its street-side windows usually curtained or shuttered from the eyes of passers-by.To meet this challenge, the conventional plan and section has been radically redefined.The stair and elevator core are pushed up against the street façade, instead of running along one of the party walls. As a result, loft-like spaces run fluidly the entire length of the 38-foot-deep building, rather than being compartmentalized into small front and back rooms.The front facade derives its expression from the interior interplay of openness and privacy. It screens the house from the street through several layers: the stairway, the bookshelves, the solid wall with punched windows providing glimpses of the street, and the exterior perforated aluminum rain screen. Two narrow vertical glass slots run the full height of the facade, capturing light from the street while further accentuating the length of the spaces with continuous views from the front to the back of the building.Although designed for the interior, the exterior of the front façade also engages the street. During the day the aluminum rain screen, with its water-cut brick-shaped openings echoing the solid bricks of its neighbors, appears as a flat, patterned mass, marked off from the adjacent houses by the tall glass slots on either side.”The horizontal joints of the aluminum panels break up the vertical surface as a reference to the rhythm of the window spacing of the row houses. At the same time, the glass and aluminum reference the many high-rise apartment and office buildings of this midtown Manhattan neighborhood.This impression wanes at dusk, as the glow from the horizontal slit windows and the vertical glass slots animates the street facade, making the aluminum appear more as a screen than a mass, and invites the eye toward, but not into, the house.The rear facade engages the opposite approach; it is all glass, a full-height, full-width curtain wall that bathes the interior in light. It is hard to determine what exactly the structure is, and unlike the surrounding caves and rocks, it clearly is not a part of nature – nor is it a ruin. A frame, a shape, made at a completely different place for a completely different purpose. Within this shell shaped structure will one find floors constructed, wall separating spaces, and rooms furnished. The scenery conjures a SF film-like image, in which locals inhabit over an abandoned spacecraft. With time, trees start to grow encircling the spacecraft, harmonizing it into the landscape.Desiring a place that will be occupied frequently over many years and yet at the same time be in sync with nature, we came up with the aforementioned scenery of a large shell structure floating above ground.Being in sync with nature isn’t about yielding to nature – it’s about coexistence. The existence of the structure depends on its power to endure nature. By isolating living space from the wilderness, and upgrading its quality as a shelter, the house will be protected from nature and will provide a comfortable environment. With this, the house will be taken care of and used frequently and continuously. Specifically in cases of villas, frequent use is what leads it to blend in with its surroundings.The regions’ low temperatures and high humidity level makes for a harsh climate. As a result, many houses that take on traditional structures are decaying. Is it in sync with nature? Perhaps. But the whole idea of comfort seems to be put into question. Consequently, large numbers of villas have not been in use for many years bringing them down to further dilapidation. Despite the general avoidance of concrete material in the region, its usage and the lifting structure have helped the villa protect itself from the humidity.Leaving the boundary between human life and nature ambiguous is a Japanese virtue. Yet, this ideal can only be achieved through meticulous attention and care of the wilderness on a daily basis. This might be attainable at our homes, but isn’t a practical theory when applied to villas. If a visit to the villa inevitably leads to hours and days of maintenance, why bother going? It clearly goes against the purpose of a villa. Having a type of living space that merges with nature could be appealing, but it only seems natural to consider this option only when one is ready to devote a large time solely on maintenance.It goes without saying that villas should not only be functional spaces for the weekend. Their greatest goal is to provide us with good rest, leisure, and picturesque views that never become dull – all in the vicinity of nature. As opposed to the other container projects, which mostly feed on the excess of available cargo containers, ConHouse pushes the development of containers manufactured especially for housing and office purposes.Even though the past 20 years have significantly changed the face of architecture, the basic form of these containers has remained the same. The ConHouse system now upgrades them to enable a quality of living comparable to classical housing. This is achieved mainly through rationally designed ground plans, carefully selected materials, a well-lit interior and the customized outer appearance of individual units. To counteract the formal setup of the site plan the spatial organization has been setup to challenge the established axis without eroding it.To achieve this, pathways have been intentionally designed to dissolve and reappear along the route. The line clearly divides the formal living area of the main house from the informal public spaces but it is counteracted by the complex interlocking geometry and asymmetrical volumes that make up the exterior.The Main house kitchen was conceived as the backbone of the informal family gathering space of the residence. By programming the larger appliances to the south and west walls, the kitchen serves as a transition space between the public and private areas while maintaining a very open feel with the adjacent family room. First, to build a house within the limits of a material budget and the stock sizes available. Second, to be able to generate spaces within the house that generously embrace the site, and spaces which allow light and visual continuity to flow from one room to another.The house is read as two simple gable roof volumes of stucco which sit on a foundation of stone. A third intermediary volume of mahogany mediates the size and mass of the two larger volumes while responding to the scale of the streetscape, and marks the axis of the entry into the house.The front side of the house is selective in allowing visual access from the interior to the street, while at the rear views are maximized. In addition, the long gallery enclosed by glass sliding doors provides additional visual access to the backyard and the protective presence of the towering tree canopy above the site. At several instances, it is typical to experience a change in scale when proceeding from a one-story space to a full-height space such as from the Kitchen to the Family Room or the rear gallery to the space of the foyer and the stairs to the second floor.The Burning Tree Residence is a home sensitive to the issue of sustainability. Critical decisions were made throughout the design process to ensure the house was constructed and endures in an environmentally responsible way. Despite this, each space flows into the next so that the spatial context is strong.The colour scheme and lighting design is also warm and subdued throughout. We call it Scandinavian dark blond. Another recurring theme is subtle patterns, in many cases derived from our own abstracted architectural drawings. However, the poor conditions of the foundations quickly proved this option impossible…”The St-Hubert Residence by naturehumaine:“In turn, the architects studied the possibility to build an extension into the backyard. Again two major constraints were to be found: the Municipality forbid to construct higher than the existing roof membrane and the presence of roc 4-0 ft into the ground made the construction of a basement very costly.From those limitations, an unconventional solution was developed: compressing the spaces on numerous split-levels to yield the desired rooms, with a stunning double height dining room and a generous provision of natural light.The selected building materials are deliberately left raw and untouched to bluntly meet the existing structure of the house. And for all its acceptance of roughness, the home’s interior achieves a simple air of authenticity.Playing in a subversive manner with the numerous constraints, the architects yielded a unique project.
