I wanted a way to achieve the precise drilling required to create a perfect "draw". And so I bought my first lathe! Well actually my Dad bought me the lathe for my Christmas and Birthday.....Thanks Dad! Since the Briar wood was so expensive, I decided to try some local hardwoods; but the wood just kept cracking on me! So I began to search youtube for ways to dry wood without cracking. To increase the melting rate, break or grate into smaller chunks before hand. Add Mineral Spirits and mix thoroughly.
Woodturning - Butternut Pepper Grinder (Crush Grind) Woodturner Ky 2018-05-26 | Two points I forgot to mention in the video: 1st is most important and is concerning the finishing process. When applying the final coat of polyurethane, use a piece of cotton cloth that wont shed lint easily. 2nd point is that before gluing in the mechanisms, I sealed the inside of the grinder with Shellac. To melt the beeswax faster, break into small chunks or grate into shavings. Once wax is melted, add mineral oil. Use 1:1 ratio of mineral oil to beeswax for a firm mixture for buffing on the lathe or by hand, and a 2:1 or 3:1 ratio for a softer version that can be much more easily wiped on and buffed by hand. Measure in fluid ounces for mineral oil, and ounces by weight for beeswax. The higher the mineral oil content, the less of a build possible.

Woodturning - Natural Edge Goblet (2018) Woodturner Ky 2018-03-30 | In this video I turn a Natural Edge Goblet from a Butternut branch. The finish I used on this piece is a Shellac Friction Polish (based on Capt. Eddie Castelin's OB Shine Juice) and the recipe for my version is at the bottom of this description. The tools used in this project were a 1/2" spindle gouge (Robert Sorby), 1/2' round nose scraper (High speed Chinesium), 1 1/4' skew (P&N), diamond parting tool (Oneway), and a 1/2" bowl gouge (Thompson). The branch was cut about a year ago, and allowed to dry after sealing the end grain with thick latex paint. Lathe is a Oneway 1640. Chuck is a Oneway Stronghold.Friction Polish recipe:For 500ml of finish (Can be scaled to any size, 500ml goes a LONG way; Make only enough for a couple months)Ingredients:1 500ml Squeeze Bottle300ml Denatured Alcohol56 Grams Dewaxed Shellac Flakes (Blond preferable)150ml Pure Tung Oil (Can also use Walnut, Mineral, or Boiled Linseed Oil)Directions: Combine Denatured alcohol and Shellac Flakes into Squeeze Bottle and replace lid or cap. Once flakes are completely dissolved, add Tung Oil. Shake before applying, meaning before every coat. Finish separates very quickly.Apply a generous first coat with a paper towel, and buff until completely dry. Build up further coats by applying small amounts and buffing each coat until completely dry. Repeat until it looks awesome! Remember to do a really good job sanding first.
