#05 - Kingdom Hearts Dark Road - Episode 3: The Purpose of the Journey (Quests 41 ~ 59)
updated
Episode 26 onwards, you can follow the old Timeline episodes, since they have no reason to be re-uploaded and/or they won't have new pieces of story.
I intend to re-upload a couple of more Birth by Sleep episodes anyway, since we have some Reports from KH3 and a scene from Melody of Memory happening before KH1.
All of the new episodes will be added to the playlist as soon as they're uploaded. The old Timeline episodes that do not need to be updated, story or content wise, will be added there as well, so you won't miss anything and they will be in the right order.
— Explaining the Kingdom Hearts Timeline project —
As many of you already know, the Kingdom Hearts Timeline project started back in April 2018 as a way to prepare all of us for the release of Kingdom Hearts 3. What is the Timeline project? Basically, you'll see all of the story events as they chronologically happen. Which is seemingly easy to do, but...if you're familiar with Kingdom Hearts, then you do know the series is so full of flashbacks, callbacks and retcons, that it's extremely easy to lose track of them.
I always like to think of the Timeline as an experiment. I wasn’t sure if it could be a welcome one but, somehow, it was so well received that it exceeded my expectations.
The original Timeline was just a way to re-live all of the Kingdom Hearts titles leading to KH3, in a different, yet familiar way. I never had plans to go back to it, as I was fully aware of all the flashbacks and callbacks that could be added in the future titles. I don’t really like the idea of uploading new, fixed episodes every now and then—it would just confuse all of you (and, more than anyone, myself!)
Still, the requests and messages I received in the past few years made me reconsider my plans. More than anything, I did plan to complete the KHUX saga, as it was the only incomplete title when KH3 came out.
So here we are! Now that KHUX ended I have everything at my disposal for making the ultimate, complete chronological version of this title.
I can’t stress enough the purpose of this project—this doesn’t want to be the best or the perfect way of experiencing the Kingdom Hearts saga.
All of the titles should be played following their release dates. The Timeline is simply an alternate way of experiencing the story we already know and only players who already played the games should watch it. New players would be spoiled about some plot points, so be warned.
This project gives you a different perspective on specific events, and the adding of new musics, flashbacks, callbacks and secret reports, makes the whole experience even more unique and immersive.

I’ll leave some basic Q&A down here related to the future of the Timeline:
1)
Q: Will you be uploading all of the episodes from the scratch?
A: No. I’ll just reupload the episodes containing flashbacks/callbacks that we got to see after the release of KH3. For instance, the beginning of Birth by Sleep will be reuploaded since I’ll have to add the dialogue between Master Xehanort and Vanitas at the Land of Departure, occurring in Dark Road.
2)
Q: Will the old episodes be deleted?
A: No. All of the episodes will stay, but the new ones will have the text “NEW” in the thumbnail and in the video title. The new episodes will replace the old ones in the Timeline playlist in my channel.
3)
Q: Will you be making KH3 as well?
A: Yes, but my main goal was completing both KHUX and Dark Road. I do have some plans for KH3 but I’m considering of using the PC version of it, so I can disable the music through mods and do some…special stuff. If you are a KH3 modder/you know someone who could help me, please message me on Twitter!
4)
Q: So all of the 123 episodes list will be messed up?
A: No. KHUX will still finish on Episode 11 like I planned years ago. Dark Road will start on Episode 12. Only the beginning of Birth by Sleep might have a small change of numbers in the playlist.
5)
Q: Why did you put Missing-Link in the intro alongside the other titles?
A: Because...never say never. There's no way I can put the whole story of Missing-Link in the Timeline, not in the near future. That game's story might last some years, like it happened with KHUX. However, I did want to include it in the panels titles screen, so we finally have a complete timeline screen, for once.

Some of these Birth by Sleep episodes won't include new stuff, as the old episodes don't need to be updated story wise (although this one does have an extra "scene"). There might be a few changes or references here and there, but right now I'm just merging some of the old episodes together so we can catch up with the episodes numbering in the new playlist here. youtube.com/playlist?list=PLhcSrKyqhfh4IUovnvR0tRrii_EDTckdk

As for the KH3 flashbacks of the chess scenes where Eraqus wins, this is how I envisioned them. Those scenes and dialogues in KH3 are just a "poetic way" to announce Sora's victory, thanks to the light of the past. I like to think that they didn't really happen during Dark Road, but they're just a medium for giving us a preview of the future events (Ephemer helping Sora and the Lost Master arc).
Some of the next episodes related to Birth by Sleep will be re-uploaded, as they need to catch up with the episodes numbering order. Master Xehanort's reports will be remade following this new format. There's one more reference to Luxu that will be included as well.

The new episodes will be added to the playlist as soon as they're uploaded. The old episodes that do not need to be updated, story or content wise, will be added there as well.

If you're more curious or you have more questions, please ask!

Visually wise, the gameplay was terrible. It was so frenetic that the viewer struggled to follow the action. I myself had troubles to follow the order of the attacks because, visually, battles have the same KHUX animations, but...their speed is doubled. Which is something I never tolerated and it was terrible to see.
This is why I made the battles look as closely as possible like in KHUX, having the same animation speed. Every single tap or sound effect for the attacks in battles have been manually added. It took much time but it was something I've been wanted to experiment since Dark Road was released and I must say, the gameplay flows much better like this.
And, of course, this allowed me to put my own custom music as well.
Enjoy!

I took my time to upload this, so I'm sorry if it took longer than I originally planned, but I'm currently very busy and it's a real challenge having to consider all of this stuff for the Timeline.
As always, please let me know what you think of this and if you have any suggestions I should be taking into account.

As of today, we're still not 100% sure about what happened between Luxu and Brain at the end. In this episode I kept my own interpretation and order of the events according to the KH3 secret reports, but please, take this with a grain of salt. We'll have more answers whenever Missing Link comes out.
Next up, Dark Road.

I did my best to showcase the war, this time in HD, without wasting too much time against every single foreteller. I'm pretty happy of the final result and the change of musics makes it way more enjoyable.

Also, I've read about some people wondering how am I getting this new gameplay footage now, since I'm adding custom music. Those are gameplay scenes I recorded, without background music, a few days before KHUX ended its service. I had a feeling I could make good use of such gameplay in the future, making sure to change the player's outfit everytime.

If you're more curious or you have more questions, please ask!

I guess we weren't expecting to see so many little hearts leaving the bodies of 12 kids today! Was it worth it playing the finale yourself? Yes, but only if you were fully prepared and had a stacked deck beforehand. There's no need to grind for hours for an offline game with no incentives or rewards. I had tons of BP I could exchange with all the cards I wanted, so it was a breeze.
Going back to Dark Road after 21 months was kind of odd, as I totally forgot what cards I had as well as most of their effects. But then again, I can confirm the gameplay could have a good potential, but it was still requiring too much speed from the player. Which didn't really make me enjoy it, as I am always too focused on my cards and I barely looked at my enemies during battles.
Still, I'm glad it finally got its own ending, although we all probably expected to last way longer. This gives me good hope for Missing Link, which should be released pretty soon.
I would talk more about the ending here, but I've been working on this all day long no stop and I think I need some... sleepzzzZZzZz...

Episode 4: Cruel Clues will be released soon.
This was...very much needed. I forgot like most of the story myself and I realized a good collection of all the dialogues cutscenes could be useful before the final update.
The final part of Dark Road was supposed to be released, alongside the offline version of the game, in September 2021. However, Square announced they needed more time and scheduled the update for winter. The update is still requiring more time than previously mentioned and, as of today, we still don't know the exact date.
I would dare to assume it's going to be released pretty soon, as a lot of big news concerning Kingdom Hearts are on their way. In fact, the saga is turning 20 years old on March 28th and a lot of hot stuff will be revealed!
Note #1: this delay is the reason why I still didn't go back to the Timeline project. Back when I announced the return of the Timeline, we were supposed to get the final part of Dark Road within September. I'll go back to it once we finally have all of the Dark Road cutscenes at our disposal.
Note #2: I missed you all!
We'll soon have more chances to talk and chill together.

It basically allows you to visit the Quadratum map you can normally only see from above, when fighting Yozora. Most of the objects and the buildings now have proper collision, which means you can now touch them, walk on them and so on. Even the way you access Quadratum itself is just incredibly well done.
The amount of work done from the developers for working on such a big city is impressive, if you consider we're not even supposed to explore it in the first place. There are too many nice details hidden here and there and I highly suggest you to explore this by yourself if you have the chance.
Unfortunately I didn't have much time at disposal for a long exploration, but this will serve as an incentive for you all to go and explore it yourself!
Following 13th Vessel's directive, I've added a short, secret footage at the end of this video here on YouTube. Make sure to follow that guy on both Twitter and YouTube and show your support! The KH3 modders don't seem to stop and I'm all for it.

That's why I added some information boxes at the beginning and throughout this video, so I could hopefully give you a better comprehension of what turned out to be the most interesting story out of all the Kingdom Hearts titles so far.
This video only contains the cutscenes related to the main plot, excluding battles and the filler episodes from game events and Disney worlds. Yes, the events happening in the Disney worlds do help our Player get some inner development, but they're minimal and they are not related to the actual main storyline—except for Wreck-it Ralph's world, which has been briefly summed up here.

I won't lie, I'm still disappointed that people playing on global had to wait 10 days in order to get to play the ending, avoiding spoilers and feeling treated differently than the Japanese playerbase. This has been an issue forever, since the game was released, and I'm disappointed to see they couldn't deliver the ending worldwide (especially since the last couple of updates were released simultaneously with the Japanese version).
More videos will follow this one, focused on summing up the story, which will only include the important stuff. This way, anyone will be able to easily catch up. That video is almost complete.
Plus, now that KHUX is over, I can go back to the first episodes of my Timeline series and work on them. Dark Road is not done yet, but for now we can finally complete the KHUX part.
As always, refer to the full, complete KHUX playthrough playlist on my channel: youtube.com/playlist?list=PLhcSrKyqhfh4fLr4-fzIIeeaMG2RdgPGH
Thank you for everything, KHUX! I'm going to miss you, my dear green haired little guy.

As I said before, I owe this game a lot. Most of my dearest memories are tied to it, especially the ones related to the friends I played with.
I didn’t expect them to make a new Dearly Beloved specifically for the credits, but man, Yoko never disappoints.
This music is pure magic. It's a love letter to all these players who have been playing this game for the past years, as you can notice bits of the Dearly Beloved versions from χ[chi], Unchained χ and Union χ Cross, all mixed together. It even dissolves into the KH3 Dearly Beloved, which is already amazing by itself. I extended it twice just for your ears' pleasure.
More videos will come next, like summaries and stuff. I would just like for the global version to finally release the update too, so I can work on them.

Probably one of the most difficult updates ever to translate, as there are quite a few new concepts for the very first time. Of course, we can only be 100% sure of the meaning of every single dialogue once the global version gets the update. As always, and for the last time, I need to thank my dear friend Catherine ( twitter.com/CatBuntaichou / nichiei.translations@gmail.com ) for always being so quick when providing me with the English text translations from Japanese throughout these years. It was an honor to work with such a great translator and, more than anything, a friend. I can’t wait to work with you again!

How am I? I’m happy, but also extremely sad. I’ve been so busy today that I didn’t properly take the time to fully realize that I won’t be able to play this game anymore.
More than anything, I want to thank all the community who has been stuck with me and with every story update for the last 7 years, since when I started recording and translating the KHX PC version. I could feel the hype from you guys with every story update and I truly felt honored to be one of those guys you put your trust into.
I want to talk more about this mix of feelings in a different video though, coming soon, possibly sharing my opinions with you guys live.
Thank you for everything, KHUX! I'm going to miss you, my dear green haired little guy.

Again, thanks to everyone who joined! I can't wait for the final part, which should be released between late May/early June.
Remember that the end of service for KHUX has been postponed to the 17th of June, so we still have some weeks of playtime left. The events, the Raids and the PVP will end around the 30th of May.

The next update is the last one and will probably be released between late May/early June.

It was the very first time I had so many people interacting with me at once. We had a very nice time - we spent most of my Jewels, talked about KHUX story and discussed about the upcoming ending. I've never had the chance to share so many opinions with you, even about stuff related to KH3 and more. Moreover, I was glad my English could be understood pretty easily (for those who don't know, I'm from Italy). I need to practice more though, so I hope you'll join me again next time!
I'm planning of streaming live the KHUX ending, so make sure to follow me on my Twitter so I can keep you up to date. Again, thank you all!

This is actually so embarrassing for me. I think I'm pretty good when it comes to writing in English, but speaking it in front of a camera is a different matter. Hopefully my Italian accent won't annoy you too much.
See you later!

NOTE: The Japanese version of KHUX is usually 10-15 quests ahead than the NA version. This video you're watching is the official, North American version of the story update released a few days ago. If you think you already saw this in the past, you're not tripping. That was the Japanese story update manually translated by me and my friend, uploaded some months ago. Hence, this is not a re-upload, but the official English translation of the story update.
Had to point this out, since way too many people thought I was just re-uploading the same story updates without being able to recognize the two different versions.

Unexpectedly, the global version is fully caught up to the Japanese version story wise. This video was uploaded right before recording the global one. You can watch it from the link above.
Just like the previous update, only a single quest was released today for the JP version. ICYMI, the game will be soon shutting down: sqex.to/wb875
