This style of quilting produces such unique and interesting results that I knew I had to try it out - and it was the perfect sewing project for working on in bits and spurts. It travels well, you can stitch away on it when you have just a few spare moments, and all you need are some fabric scraps --in this case, helpfully donated by YOU, my loyal viewer-- and a bit of thread!

In this video, I share my design plans for renovating the bedroom of my 120-year-old Victorian duplex in Nova Scotia. I dive into my inspirations, limitations, and sources for materials, while using clips that didn't fit into the main video.
Initially inspired by Scandinavian design, we take a look at my time living in Denmark, my bedroom there, and look at how I aim to recreate the cozy, minimalist style I adore in my new home. I show how I use Milanote, an organizational tool, to gather my thoughts, images, and inspirations into a cohesive plan. The design approach includes warm wood tones, natural materials like jute and plants, and a clean white and bright green palette.
However, due to budget constraints and limited local resources, my final bedroom design took a shart U-turn and evolveed into a Scandinavian-inspired folk art style. I incorporated a thrifted duvet cover with vibrant colors and whimsical patterns as the centerpiece, and this broader color scheme allowed me to find matching thrifted items more easily.
I also share my plans to upcycle furniture, such as painting a dresser with Norwegian Rosemaling patterns (although time constraints prevented me from completing it before leaving for a work contract).

But as I was filming these house renovations adventures, in my 120 year old fixer upper, I had this nagging feeling that I was missing something. Like there was something I was forgetting to properly communicate, and it wasn't until reading some of your comments (and one email in particular) that it really hit me - I haven't really told you everything that's wrong with the house! It's practically falling apart, it's in total disrepair, and I haven't really mentioned anything about it, other than the lack of plumbing.
So today I go over the top ten most dire things in need of fixing in my Cheap Old House - from the roof to the foundation, and everything in-between!

Join me in my latest adventure as Phil and I continue the transformation of my 120-year-old fixer-upper in Nova Scotia. In this episode, we work on emptying the attic, which is packed with antiques, treasures, and a ton of garbage. We devise a...creative... solution to dispose of the attic contents, and then set our sights on the basement. Along the way, I take time to answer questions about the home's history, and shares my thoughts about its possible past lives. The episode concludes with a trip to Halifax, where I score some great secondhand finds for future renovations. Watch for a glimpse into the realities of home renovation, and the unexpected treasures (and challenges) it can bring!

DAY TWO in our new-to-us, 120 year old Victorian mansion in Nova Scotia. We found ourselves a free couch that fits very well in our Victorian era duplex. We (start) to install our secondhand water heater, we meet with a Home Energy Assessment, buy a secondhand fridge, and deal with the fact that we're still missing power in half the house.
An absolutely insane number of things happened to us one day one - there was water in basement, there was water pouring from the ceiling, we didn't have power in half of the house, or hot water in any of the house... it was a rough start! So we had to get our hands on a (used) water heater, start emptying out the basement, and start tackling the laundry list of things to do on the thoughtful renovation (restoration?! rehabilitation?) of this house....!
Paying for "Sight Unseen"
What happens in this episode:
⏳ A busy day ahead uncovering secrets in a 120-year-old house in Nova Scotia.

🏠 Thoughtful check-in from water heater seller, preparing for home energy assessment, clearing attic for access.
🔍 Exploring defenestration options leads to unexpected discoveries.
🏠 A quick sneak peak at the attic to prepare for the home energy assessment.
🔥 Exploring options to make my old coal fireplaces functional
⚡ Challenges restoring power to one half

An absolutely insane number of things happened to us one day one - there was water in basement, there was water pouring from the ceiling, we didn't have power in half of the house, or hot water in any of the house... it was a rough start! So we had to get our hands on a (used) water heater, start emptying out the basement, and start tackling the laundry list of things to do on the thoughtful renovation (restoration?! rehabilitation?) of this house....!
We arrived, walked around our house for the first time, found a roofer, a plumber, an electrician, started drying out the basement --installed sump pump-- discovered a massive leak (ceiling waterfall), located a water heater, and came one step closer to finalizing our plan for heating this house. Plus we also filmed that house tour you watched last week… not bad for a day’s work!
Paying for "Sight Unseen"
What happens in this episode:
🏠 Unexpected challenges arise as we navigate renovations in a century-old house.

🔑 Challenges discovered in new home: water issues, missing gutters, useless door in bathroom lol
🏚️ Exploring the neglected basement filled with a mix of antiques and garbage.
🏡 Renovation plans for historic house and debate over original wall removal.
🏡 Challenges of buying a historic house as a self-employed artist and plans for short-term rentals

I showcase my unique and efficient storage solutions, such as my repurposed wicker baskets that add a touch of charm to my space, and a handy tray that keeps all my current project notions in one place, and makes clean-up a cinch. You'll get a glimpse of my huge work table, a testament to sustainability as it's entirely made from recycled materials --full video about it next week!
We'll also discuss some sewing-related items I've thrifted and the fascinating stories they carry with them. I'll also share my love for antique sewing tools including a refinished antique sewing bird that adds a touch of history to my space. But that's not all, I'll also show you how I store my hanging patterns, where I keep my knitting supplies, and a collection of t-shirts for a future quilt project. I'll also share some tips and tricks I've learned over time to maximize storage and maintain an organized work space in a small room.

A long overdue VLOGmas update - where did all those crafts end up? Did I ever finish the crazy quilt stockings? What were my thoughts on the process of trying to sew and quilt while on the road and on a bus? Did I try any new stitches, and if so, what were they, and how did they turn out? Just general reflections on the whole crazy-quilting process and how I felt about it the second time around. I also managed to work my chicken scratch embroidery into the quilted pattern - you can even see a glimpse of it in the thumbnail!
What about the blue knit jumper? Well, I had already made a LOT of progress on my knitting, finishing the back of the sweater I'm working on in a previous video, but now I realize that I have a question and a potential question for all the experienced knitters out there regarding color bleed, because these two yarns are VERY different colors, and I'm worried that the dark blue yarn will bleed into the white yarn when I try to block it, so any advice on that would be welcome. I'm very happy that I can continue work on the front of the sweater shortly.
I also do one last Vintage Pattern of the Day session - this one is a bit outside of my normal time period (I usually prefer vintage patterns from the 30s and 40s), but these were pretty cheap and VERY fun, so when I saw them at a vintage sale for only $4, I grabbed them, and I can't wait to make them up for the summer!

I also made a LOT of progress on my knitting, finishing the back of the sweater I'm working on (pattern linked down below). I'm very happy with how it turned out, and my roommate was able to get more yarn for me so that I can continue work on the front of the sweater once I return to Montreal!

I don't have the energy to write a whole new description, so here's some of the text from the first episode! In this episode we'll find a suitable --and free-- Christmas stocking pattern for some future Crazy Quilting!
I'll pack up our suitcase, but not before going through all the various crafts I'll be bringing with me on tour, including knitting, future knitting bags and notions, fabric for quilting, some chicken scratch apron supplies, AND of course the inevitable garland and twinkle lights to make each and every hotel on our whirlwind 6 week tour feel like home for the holidays!
Also included: some more sneak peaks of our touring Christmas Circus show (although more will come in future videos, don't worry), and a first look at my favorite vintage patterns!
