ARWing Pro one year later (Cammounts, INAV Setup, OSD...) It's great now with a feature rich FC and current INAV version. Each flight a pleasure! (Foxeer Aura7, DJI O3) RCSchim 2023-06-05 | Whenever I wanted easy FPV fun in the last few months - I uesd my Aura7. It just works! Sometimes I tested antennas, mostly I wanted to enjoy the really good video downlink (O3). I only got around 150Wh of charging (so with some loss into heat) - and that's not really enough :)-2nd attempt - let's go serious with the battery pack! Checked various options (see my excel file: http://bit.ly/3nLdi88) and decided to go with a TATTU 26Ah 6S pack. These are normally around 500-600$ - but I got a "used" one as a deal. It's in perfect condition! The only issue with the Tattu was a weird connector. GPS RTH erratic weird flight home FIXED (BF 4.4.x on Foxeer Aura7) RCSchim 2023-03-05 | Betaflight 4.4.x has better, more advanced GPS return home functions now (it can even land they say). When I wanted to try this out on my new Foxeer Aura7, I found the GPS RTH flight pretty weird, not very confidence building! It moves rapidly up / center / down. Betaflight website even has this under "known issues"!betaflight.com/docs/wiki/archive/GPS-Rescue-v4-4And as you see here, having a faster GPS update rate really solved my issue! New DJI O3 firmware: Low light & 10bit color RCSchim 2023-01-10 | 5.Jan 2023 FW Update 1.02.000 (O3):Air Unit can now record video at various 30fps modes (but latency is killing me there!)Sharpness and noise reduction can be set (didn't try it yet)!Improved D-Cinelike to 10bit, providing more possibilities for post-processing. Didn't see a dramatic difference, but maybe it looks better in nicer weather with good colors? Currently we're almost in BW mode here in Austria ;)Optimized camera exposure? That's the most interesting part for sure!it should help to avoid over-darkened shadow areas. Pay attention: you need the DJI Assistant Consumer drones version!You also need to upgrade your goggles (G2 or Gv2).On my first attempt to update the Gv2 - it gave me error 5-100-4, after a reboot the 2nd attempt worked.2.7k120 didn't look brighter in my tests - maybe in certain light scenarios it's better? 2.7k60 with EV +0.7 looked way better in the garage test (use the index below). 2.7k30 (or 4k30) is not useable for the live feed. Feels way too stuttery. i think they just duplicate the FPS to show 2x30fps in the goggles. MAYBE - it can work on slow smooth cruise flights with also an ND filter to have enough motion blure to blend the frames? DJI O3 BEST Cam Settings! RCSchim 2022-12-16 | In my initial review youtu.be/oaOpgrfLqGI the DVR footage was too dark compared to the VISTA. I tested different settings to find out what looks best. Pretty happy with the result - hope it helps you!Lowlight handling can be great (the CHIP is larger than VISTA) but their exposure algorithm needs an update: If you fly with high cam angle and have dark ground with bright sky, the sky is preferred and dangerous twigs can hide in the darkness ;)As you see here: if you just fly in a dark place, the ISO goes up really high (I love that you can import the SRT file to see dynamic ISO readouts) To the cam as an actioncam substitute: for me the quality is really nice. No gopro11 for productions, but definitly good enough to share some fun flights on youtube! D-Cinelike gives you some more room for color grading (but also more work).I'm really happy with the signal quality! Even in low bitrate situations you get stable and smooth life feed. Maybe this idicates that even in CE region it uses more than 25mw legally? But hard to confirm!Auto channel selection? It will help you by even switching channel in the air if someone plugs in his quad near you! Looks like it's a good idea to fly in auto mode to be on the save side. FCC Hack: No NACO anymore :) but now it's called "ham_cfg_support" File: :) create a new, empty file called ham_cfg_support (without an extension!) and place it on the SD Card - this then into your GOGGLES! Set frequency selection to manual, 20mhz and you should get 7ch! Caddx Walnut: The ultimate Session replacement for drone pilots? RCSchim 2022-11-07 | Many FPVers (especially freestyle bando rippers) loved the Gopro Session (which gopro discontinued years ago). Currently they have a Gopro11 mini - but with 130gr it's neither mini nor cheap. Super image quality - but overkill for your bando bash!DJI Action 2 is nice, affordable, durable, low weight but some disliked the low internal memory, short batterylife and overall handling. Also the light handling and stabilization is not perfect. Gyroflow still is not supported - and their rocksteady looks really good - but has some downsides on freestyle moves. Usually this phase don't last long, since I fall back to the convenience of copters :)Now with really good options (DJI video transmission, Crossfire controll link and INAV flight controller) this was my longest phase of mostly flying planes!I've learned a lot with the planes, feel really confident with INAV now. Autolaunch installed on all of the planes - super helpfull!Stability (control surface action against gusts?) could be better - I guess I need to tune the PIDs there better.But ACRO mode is so nice! FPV exploration: Finding the perfect dive spot RCSchim 2022-10-29 | This was an Epic FPV journey! On that day I drove to a quite remote spot to fly my MARS there (see the last short) and also do some freestyle rips of near cliffs. On the way home I passed this nice location again and while driving I already charged one pack for my Chimera7 (which always has to come with me to FPV spots!). Thumb (~30ms off)- Thumb(normal) is 230-260ms off and no matter the settings it always looks like it's NOT stabilized- Caddx Peanut (InstaGo2) is a charm to stabilize, more wideangle and it's 9-11ms off - looks very steady and smooth. While the low weight is a selling point (especially for the use on ultralight whoops) there's a general problem with lightweight cams: less (own) mass means the cam can be moved / affected easier by vibrations! (fly near ppl without risk)Negative: taking off from gras after crash..., louder, less efficientProps? GemFan D63! (1.5mm hole)BF4.3 was already installed on the FC! PIDs from their CLI file feel ok!had to change motor direction (this is now possible directly in BF config? - nice!)Not sure about their PIDs tho. I think they want to much and this burns the motors? But even with tamed down PIDs and more filtering, my left front motor gets too hot to touch after 3mins!---------------------------------ISSUES while building / testing:soldering on the plug-sockets for the motor wire connectors - couldnt do it - too small, instead I used the slightly larger direct pads and soldered the motor wires on directly (plug&play would have been so nice!)After 2 short flights (normal cruising, nothing hard, no crashes), one motor started to stutter. Thought that's airmode on the ground and kept trying, fried an Mosfet on one ESC. Used the same 4 motors (but one of them had burnt out) - the dead motor also killed my 2nd FC :(Had to use 3 FC AIO boards...3rd FC AIO (this time GepRCF411 I had in a salvage quad): used a new motor and checked the others (for coocked windings)flew fine for 2mins, than again motor failer - again a cooked winding.FC still fine. Motor Quality?For the last attempt I installed 4 Emax motors (1404/3850kv) - they still get hot.PIDS: Dterm too high? P1= 0.7 D GainFILTER: Gyro to 0.8, DTerm to 0.85 (more filtering)---------------------------------CRSF RX (could be plugged into the FC!) - telemetry worked, but NO MOVEMENT in RECEIVER Tab!?!?!?Took me a while to figure this one out! Thought the CRSF Nano is DOA, NappyFPV pointed me to the SBUS solder jumper on the AIO board. !!!(if you DONT use SBUS, you have to "switch" this to DSM) RTFM!---------------------------------YAW Washout: yaw spin after dive (when you hit throttle)- change your flying style to avoid those conditions (throttle earlier)- props in/out can help on some whoops- raise digital idle (will make the whoop floaty, but not stall. Why put a peanut on a flying wing? RCSchim 2022-07-06 | I wanted to fly some more fixed-wing again and installed an "Vista POD" on my old Techone FPV900. Works pretty well (except initially my DJI antenna was in the wrong polarity, wrongly labelled as "L"HCP where it was a RHCP again). Since I kinda liked the idea of a super stable, ultra light, good enough quality HD cam - I mounted the Caddx Peanut on the wing - hence the title ;) In anticipation of massive jello I mounted the Cam on the flight pack (to reduce vibrations) - but later it turned out that even hard-mounted on the middle section I get no jello visible. Stabilization: I prefer the Gyroflow approach - since I get more possibilities (move up/down, see more of the plane) over the insta360 Studio. Gyroflow has gotten way easier and also more powerful! 30 sec into the flight something awesome happend! RCSchim 2022-06-22 | This is a recent flight (unusual for me to edit my footage so "fresh"). Wanted to test the Caddx Peanut more. Before these flights I had more jello, tried to make a video to show the influence of props - but it was inconsistent. Generally I use 5" copters with new props and ND16 filter on the caddx all the time - that gives the best results. FPV flying adventure at the MASSIVE Maltatal Kölnbrein dam RCSchim 2022-06-09 | That was a rare chance to fly at such an awesome spot in good conditions. The day before we also tried but had high winds and rain (but a good burger with a view). This day we drove up there (with our rent Model X) - and the ride up was already very nice (curvy mountain road with like 15 really good waterfall FPV Spots alone the way!).The one regret I have now: I should have also used my freestyle 5" copter to properly dive the massive wall of the dam. Good reason to go back there some day! (but will security there kick me out?)"Maltatal Kölnbrein Talsperre"The Dam was finished 1977, 2mio m³ concrete vs 200mio m³ of water! Main reason: store water for hydro power plant. If you need energy, open the gates and run the turbine. If you have too much energy (solar, low demand) - you PUMP water back up there. The process is around 80% efficient - so you can STORE electric energy up there. Pretty sick imho!I also learned that during summer (more rain, snow melting) the water level is rising, this huge storage is filled up, while in winter the hydro power plant would only be able to run at 9% because no much (liquid) water available. With the stored water in the basin you can increase this to 78%!Facts: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maltakraftwerke full water basin = 588,3 GWh of electric power available!Wall: 2mio m³ concrete vs 200mio m³ of water! Diving the majestic Fallbach waterfall in Austria RCSchim 2022-06-05 | For the 2nd spot on our vacation FPV road-trip this waterfall was a really easy "target". Directly accessible from a main road and large parking lot - it lay there on our route to the amazing spot which will be the next and final episode of this mini series.This here is the "Fallbach" in the Malta Valley (Malta in Austria, Carinthia - not the island). It's said to be 220m and thus the highest fall in carinthia. Didn't feel like 220m for me - but that's what you can read up...Image quality: this were actiually 2 sessions. First day - rainy. 2nd day - nice but I forgot the ND filter and fixed the shutter - massive overexposing... So the Aciton2 could look way better than this!
